Larkspur did not know she was not in fact born into the magic she understood, and that her blood was equally as tainted as those within his own family. Naniko could have been educated once, but her mother ruined her.

The large wolf settled on the floor of their cave, pawing at a bone left over from the carcasses he had allowed the children to eat. He began to gnaw on a leg bone as the woman spoke, lifting his head only when she asked about children. His orange eyes brightened at the prospect. “If you want,” he finally said, holding the bone down with one paw. It had turned white as he aged, though there were certainly other signs along his salt-and-pepper face. “These ones ain’t been much trouble,” the scarred man added.
