And so they met

Alonso watched the Arctic Wolf carefully as he spoke. She seemed to be listening to what he was saying, yet the slight glazed look in her eyes as she stared at him betrayed the fact that her thoughts were elsewhere. He continued to patiently nuzzle her as waited for her response to his question. ‘Feels good’ she said suddenly, startling Alonso who had begun to nod off as he waited for an answer. She then appeared to freak out over this simple statement and continued to stammer her apologies for something that Alonso was still not aware off. She looked to be in such frenzy that Alonso couldn’t help but smile. Her cluelessness was entirely endearing.

He continued grinning as he stared at her wide, innocent eyes, her playful smile, her nose scrunching up as it did when she got worried… It was only when he began to pay attention to what she was saying that he froze. “A new pack?” The idea had never occurred to him. He had been happy to discover a new area with wolves that he could forge new friendships with. But he had never considered joining a pack to do so. As a loner he was fully capable of meeting countless new wolves and exploring new areas yet he was never tied to anything - like he could leave if he ever wanted.

The thought surprised him. Did he want to leave? ‘No, not really’ was his answer, for he had grown extremely found of the place and its people. Yet the idea of a new pack scared him. He had lost his entire family in a single event and now he balked from the idea of forming new relationships. It wasn’t just that he felt it would be a disservice to his old family, He was now also aware of the brittle nature of a life and wasn’t sure he was ready to form new relationships only to have them severed by death’s sharp knife. In short, the idea of joining a new pack terrified him.

Kiara stood next to him, her big sapphire eyes staring trustingly into his. How could he tell her that he wasn’t ready for this? That the one thing she asked him to do, he never could? “That’s never going to happen!” he spat out in sudden defiance. “Never bring up the subject again” he said as he turned away and ran. Strange how his life always had such an outrageous amount of running involved. Perhaps that’s all he was good for really.
