Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

Slowly, but surely, the damp puppy managed to calm down. It seemed as if Hotaru's efforts had not gone in vain and the child began to move around in the older wolf's arms. Hotaru wondered what was going through the puppy's mind and why she had even gotten into the circumstances that she was found in. What reason did the puppy have to go into the lake? Why was she wandering around in a strange land without her parents? Somewhere from deep inside her mind, where the feral instincts of her subconscious resided, anger rose up and threatened to consume her. How could a mother leave her pup unattended? Hotaru had to fight back to urge to nuzzle the puppy and take it home. Her maternal desires flooded her mind with only logic and reason acting as a barrier to her actions. She was not the child's mother, it was not her place to raise it.

It didn't take long for Fawkes to join the females, and his question made Hotaru want to smack him. How could he ask something so insensitive to a scared, half drowned, puppy? However, the young canine's remark made Hotaru pause. The water broke? What did that mean? The grey wolf thought hard about the puppy and its remarks. She was young, so winter's child. There was some ice on the water, but the ice was thin and easily breakable. Perhaps this was the young female's first encounter with thawed water. "What you are thinking of is ice, and the ice is melting, my dear. You can not walk on water." Fawkes took the time to put in his own remark in low speech, something along the lines of spring and melting snow. As he spoke Hotaru continued to work on keeping the puppy calm with her gentle strokes. "Young one, what is your name?"
