Dalgina was off in the new pack, deep within the territory. She had found herself a place few came to, a place where she could be by herself and just think. It felt better that way, safe without others around to scare her. There was a giant frozen pool of water nearby, perfect for playing on. Unaware of the fact that ice just like snow would melt, Dalgina set off onto it, deciding to cool off on the ice and let her worries go away as she slid around, carefree.

Unfortunately, that wasn't what happened. Instead the new place proved itself every bit as scary as Dalgina felt it was, cracking underneath her. The ice fell away, leaving her to fall. Screaming Dalgina hit the cold water. Her mind blanked out, panicking as she thrashed around. She wasn't too deep, but the bottom of the pond was just out of reach, her paws dipping down and striking it, only to find herself submerged and pushing herself a short hop back up for a breath of air.

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

OOC: Assuming Forest Oasis. Small PP, hope its okay

The cold weather had returned, almost as if winter refused to release the world from its grasp. Just as the crisp winter air seemed to suck the life out of spring, it almost destroyed Hotaru's desire to do anything. She simply sat in her house and toyed with her favorite carving knife. It was a beautiful knife that sported mahogany handle. Inlaid into the wood was a golden design that had faded with time and overuse. Hotaru had received it from her uncle, where he had gotten it was a mystery to her. Absentmindedly she fiddled with the razor sharp edge of the blade, a dangerous toy that made Fawkes shift nervously back and fourth.

Eventually, the red-tailed hawk had, had enough. Fawkes screamed at Hotaru in his avian low speech. His anger flared as he demanded she do something. He was tired of watching her fidget and he was bored sitting inside the house all day. Just to make his point stick, he flapped his great wings to take off into the air and landed on her head. She growled and tried to push him off as he pecked painfully at her head. "Ow, Get off you oversized rooster." For several minutes they fought, each one screaming profanities and trying to push the other. By the end of it, Hotaru had several painful welts on the top of her head and Fawkes was missing a few non-essential feathers. For several moments, the pair sat and nursed their wounds. Neither spoke, but they both came to the same conclusion, it was time to get out of the house.

Wolf and hawk moved as one: Fawkes flying out the open window and Hotaru departing through the door. The blind female had her walking staff with her, but she barely used it. She had been living in Cercatori for at least six months, the paths were familiar to her. For once, it was Fawkes who led the way. He chose to travel towards the Forest Oasis, it's beauty and the waking trees enthralled the hawk who still retained his vision. Hotaru found the place boring, but she decided not to argue. She had pulled out his precious feathers and felt like she owed him at least that much.

An earth shattering scream broke the crisp air and made Hotaru's blood freeze. Fawkes's wingbeats faded as he surged forward, his cries sounding to lead his blind companion through the forest. After the female regained her senses, she too surged forward on two legs. Someone was in trouble. Blood pounded through her ears as the sounds of splashing grew louder and louder. Soon, her paws touched the water and her staff was forgotten on the banks of the lake. Fawkes cried out as he circled the drowning puppy. Hotaru splashed blindly into the shallow water as she searched for the puppy, her outstretched arms trying to grab onto the struggling canine. The ice cracked easily beneath her weight and did little to impair her progress.

Searching fingers hit wet fur and Hotaru immediately grabbed onto the child. Using her dexterous forearms and hands, she hoisted the tiny female out of the water and carried her to dry land. Hotaru sat down at the base of a nearby tree and she gently held the young canine. Her arms circled around the puppy, but were loose enough for her to escape if she wanted too. Fawkes had landed in the tree above them and stared down at the two wolves, his large eyes filled with curiosity.

Everything was wet, the world didn't look so friendly, and Dalgina was wishing she'd never left the house that morning. Whether or not it wasn't ingali was beside the point, as anything was better than this fruitless struggling, buoying up just long enough to grab a breath before she sank down again. The cry of a bird reached her, and Dalgina cried out. Grynn! It had to be her. Neela was close, and she'd save Dalgina, and take her back to Ichika where she could be with Kiara and her new puppy friends.

The grip that rushed her was stumbling, working on getting a grasp. It was rough like the sailor, but the confused strokes made her wonder if it really was her friend. She was lifted into the air, and the pup gasped, finally able to force air through her lungs. She felt heavy, damp fur clinging to her. Lowered down Dalgina nuzzled into the warmth that wrapped around her, shivering slightly. S-scared. That was scary! What was wrong with the water?

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

For wolves, being cold was an unpleasant and extremely rare event. The grey female sported a thick coat that contained two layers of fur. The first layer kept her warm, the second kept her dry. However, with her lower half submerged in icy water, being cold was unavoidable. The frozen lake bit at her legs and crept into her skin, making concentrating extremely difficult. If it weren't for the puppies cries and Fawkes's direction, she would have never been able to locate the drowning canine. As Hotaru hauled the young creature out of the water she couldn't help but wonder who it was that she had cried out for. The word had sounded like a name. Perhaps her mother?

Dripping wet and shaking like a leaf, the two sat at the banks of the lake and slowly dried their coats in the sun. The black puppy, a unfamiliar face to Hotaru, nuzzled deep into her dry chest as she searched for warmth. Her small voice came out as a stuttered whisper and revealed just how terrified she really was. Gently, Hotaru stroked her hand from the child's head to it's back, offering her comfort and peace. "Shh, it's alright. Your safe now, don't worry little one."

Fawkes stared at the couple from his perch in the tree above them. His head cocked to the side as he observed the strange, little female. It's coat was all black and it had bright amber eyes. It was only a little thing and probably couldn't even shift. Fawkes decided that it was time to get a better look and with a few half-halfhearted flaps of his great wings, he flew out of the tree and glided down to get a better look. Hotaru's ears swiveled as she noted his landing but said nothing as he trudged right up to the black female. "Pup no swim?"

The hand stroked across the panicked pup, the dampness slowly drying off, though not nearly fast enough. For the first time since she'd been sick Dalgina felt cold, not warm enough to feel good. She did her best to push into the warmth, wanting it to be better. The voice was from a stranger, and Dalgina's eyes opened. She looked up, realizing that it was a stranger. This wasn't Neela, she couldn't go back to Ichika. She was still in this pack, only the gentle comfort of someone she didn't know between her and tears.

A bird appeared, and for a moment Dalgina imagined that it was Grynn. It revealed itself to be something different though, slowly hopping towards her. Dalgina had always liked birds, but this wasn't her friend. This was sad. The bird spoke, and the voice was male. Dalgina stared blankly. Swim? The water broke. The water wasn't supposed to behave like that. It was supposed to be still and clear, something to run across and slide and have fun.

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

Slowly, but surely, the damp puppy managed to calm down. It seemed as if Hotaru's efforts had not gone in vain and the child began to move around in the older wolf's arms. Hotaru wondered what was going through the puppy's mind and why she had even gotten into the circumstances that she was found in. What reason did the puppy have to go into the lake? Why was she wandering around in a strange land without her parents? Somewhere from deep inside her mind, where the feral instincts of her subconscious resided, anger rose up and threatened to consume her. How could a mother leave her pup unattended? Hotaru had to fight back to urge to nuzzle the puppy and take it home. Her maternal desires flooded her mind with only logic and reason acting as a barrier to her actions. She was not the child's mother, it was not her place to raise it.

It didn't take long for Fawkes to join the females, and his question made Hotaru want to smack him. How could he ask something so insensitive to a scared, half drowned, puppy? However, the young canine's remark made Hotaru pause. The water broke? What did that mean? The grey wolf thought hard about the puppy and its remarks. She was young, so winter's child. There was some ice on the water, but the ice was thin and easily breakable. Perhaps this was the young female's first encounter with thawed water. "What you are thinking of is ice, and the ice is melting, my dear. You can not walk on water." Fawkes took the time to put in his own remark in low speech, something along the lines of spring and melting snow. As he spoke Hotaru continued to work on keeping the puppy calm with her gentle strokes. "Young one, what is your name?"

Her words brought a pause from the wolf, the soft strokes halting. Dalgina pushed on the hand, still wanting to be petted even if she didn't know who this was, just that it made her feel safe. She wished Kiara was there. The petting resumed after a moment, just a brief pause before words came. Told that it was actually ice, and that the ice was melting was a surprise. The fact that water wasn't something to walk on was even more so. Dalgina had drunk water from small streams and splashed in them, but the water had always been easy to move through, only deep enough to lap at her paws when it wasn't frozen solid.

The bird spoke up, though Dalgina didn't have a clue what he had said, producing a small giggle from the black female. She was still cold, but at least it was better than before. Dalgina. Dalgina Wolfe-Denahlii. She held her head high, proud of her talnala name. The pup quickly ducked down again, burrowing back into the assuring warmth that came from what she now saw as her new friend. What's your name? Dalgina looked at the bird as she spoke before turning and glancing up at the gentle wolf holding her.

Hotaru continued to hold Dalgina and comfort her. She introduced herself and her rank. She explained that she was a wood carver and Fawkes told Dalgina his name.

The cradling arms held her more tightly, warmth pressed into the pup's shivering sides. The dampness was slowly drying off, leaving Dalgina feeling a lot better than she had when choking water down. She twisted around, looking up at the female, her tail thumping softly. Dalgina was getting fairly big, and wouldn't fit very comfortably in someone's lap for much longer, not curled up like she was. The comfort was something to be taken and enjoyed for as long as possible. Not that Dalgina knew any of this, just that she loved the attention from being so close to another.

Hotaru Tessitore di Signo. That was even longer than her name! Dalgina mouthed the words to herself quietly, making sure to remember them so she could tell everyone about how amazing Taru was, rushing into the water and grasping her from it. She stepped up, pushing her paws at Taru's chest, licking at her muzzle. Aylu carves too! He gave me this necklace, see? She twisted her head, showing off the rickety necklace of stones and wood that was netted together. She was very proud of this small piece of jewelry. She turned and looked as the bird spoke. Fawkes. Taru, where did you get a bird? Neela had one too. Do I get a friend bird?

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

As the minutes passed, Dalgina was slowly warming up. She began to twist in Hotaru's arms, but she made no motion to leave the older wolf's embrace. The puppy, although small compared to Hotaru, was still very large. She just barely fit on Hotaru's damp lap, and the child was heavy. A wet tail thumped against the grey female's legs, but she didn't mind it. Dalgina was happy, and it was due to Hotaru's efforts, a truth that warmed the older wolf's heart. The blind female really did have a soft spot for puppies.

Hotaru had renounced her last name more than a year ago. The memories attached to the simple word were too painful to bear, and in her typical fashion, she ran away from the cruelties of her world. Even so, she had not denied her passion for carving. That passion had not gone unnoticed by Dalgina and the puppy barked her carefree words. The blind female frowned as Dalgina asked her to see her necklace. "I am sorry Dalgina, but my eyes don't work. Unfortunately, I am blind. I am afraid that cannot see your necklace." The grey wolf tried to smile, but a shadow remained on her face.

Dalgina's attention was taken by Fawkes who had happily chirped his name. Taru? Confusion swarmed the older female's brain as she recognized the nickname, although no one had ever called her that. Hotaru was about to put an end to such a childish nickname, but decided against it. Why spoil a puppies fun? "I have had Fawkes since he was a chick. He was a present, but he has become my best friend. If you want, we can go to Halifax to see if a trader is willing to give us a chick. We could leave in a few days. Would you like that?"

Dalgina blinked in surprise. It seemed Taru wasn't happy to see the necklace that she liked so much. Dalgina didn't know why. It was a good necklace, very pretty. Told that her eyes didn't work, and Taru couldn't see Dalgina's necklace, the pup's eyes opened wide. Oh. That was sad. That meant Taru couldn't see all the pretty things out there, the things that Dalgina loved so much. She couldn't share it. Her tail stilled, head lowered with sorrow. Poor Taru. Dalgina didn't know how to fix eyes, didn't know how to make it better.

The sorrow quickly faded as the conversation turned back to the pretty hawk sitting by them. Her eyes took in the bright red and glossy brown, admiring the beauty. A present? Maybe Dalgina would get a bird present too! Told that they could go soon, that Taru was willing to take her to get a bird of her own, Dalgina's tail went wild, waving crazily. Yes! My own bird! What should I name her? Or will it be a male like Fawkes? She looked up, eager to hear about her winged friend, even though she didn't have him yet.

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

For some reason, those around Hotaru often felt awkward and treated her strangely; especially after they found out she was blind. Her disability seemed to inspire pity and sadness in others; even young Dalgina was no exception. Her simple exclamation betrayed the younger females sadness and surprise. Hotaru had unfortunately gotten used to such reactions. Even so, the small voice struck a chord deep inside the blind wolf's mind. How was she supposed to take pride in herself and believe in herself when everyone else around her looked at her with pity?

For the sake of her company, Hotaru decided to simply grin and bear it. The motion came easily to the grey wolf; her well polished mask hid her true feelings. Thankfully, Dalgina didn't dwell on Hotaru's disability and soon the tense atmosphere lightened as the subject of birds was broached. Fawkes clicked his tongue, it was clear he disliked the idea of a new bird. The red-tailed hawk enjoyed being the center of attention and could easily become jealous. Hotaru knew that if she ever picked up another bird he would be furious. However, another bird might help alleviate some of his responsibilities and allow Fawkes some time to relax and enjoy himself. As they were now, Fawkes had little time to just be a bird.

Unlike Fawkes, Dalgina was ecstatic about the opportunity to have a bird of her own. She bombarded the older wolf with questions and statements at lighting speed. Hotaru giggled slightly as she patted Dalgina on the back. The older wolf remembered fondly her first introduction to Fawkes. He had been a small chick, barely a day old. At that time, Fawkes had been the dependent one, which made their current situation almost ironic. "The gender of the bird will be your choice as will its name. Think carefully over the next few days as to what your friends name shall be. Now, lets get you back home, shall we?"

Fawkes clicked, appearing very unhappy. Dalgina stretched forward, gently nosing him. It's okay, you're still pretty. She liked his feathers, very bright. Dalgina was jealous of that. She wanted to be pretty too. Dalgina also wanted to fly, something that didn't fit with who she was. Dalgina could dream about it all she wished, but she would never soar through the sky. She would choose? Dalgina thought about it carefully. I want one like Fawkes! She liked him already, even if he was still new to her.

Told she'd be taken home, Dalgina perked up brightly. Home? She really wanted to go home! Could Taru really take her there? Her tail wagged excitedly, jumping off her lap. Spinning around the black pup bowed down, tail wagging crazily. We can really go? Dalgina's previous fears were forgotten, her coat only slightly damp now. When she got back home she would have to tell Kiara about everything that had happened. She was sure Kiara would like her bird too.

Hotaru
Sometimes the light that guides us along our paths, is not something that we can see, but something deep inside of us.

Like many birds, Fawkes loved attention and practically demanded it from those he knew. When Hotaru wasn't too busy, he would always consume her love and affection. He would ask to be petted and groomed for hours, to be showed with compliments and gifts. Those moments were the best in his life, although compliments from strangers were always welcome. Dalgina's simple praise made the red-tailed hawk puff up with pride, and he cocked his head upwards in what he believed to be a regal pose. The black puppies insistence on having a companion like himself only made Fawkes feel even better.

As Dalgina showered Fawkes with praise and affection, Hotaru could practically picture Fawkes's reaction. He was predictable in that sense. Even so, the older wolf wasn't going to spoil his fun and she simply nodded at the younger wolf's statements. When Hotaru mentioned home the puppy became surprisingly excited. A warm smile spread across her light jaw as Dalgina jumped off of her lap. Hotaru stood with fluid movements, her staff quickly snatched up before she became completely vertical. The cold air snapped at her damp legs, forcing the timber wolf to shake herself a little. Having a wet puppy on her lap did not speed up her own drying process.

"Of course we can go home young one. Lets see....your family lives in Thornberry, correct?"

Dalgina giggled as Fawkes puffed up, feathers made even larger than they actually were. He was an impressive bird, so strong and powerful. Dalgina was definitely in awe over him, even if his preening was funny to see. Hotaru stood up beside her, Dalgina shaking herself out as Taru did. She was more dry, doing it more out of reflex than any true need. She danced around her friend, the limits that being blind might do out of her mind. Taru was going to take her home! Dalgina's tail sped up even faster.

It stopped dead still when Thornberry was mentioned. That wasn't home. Maybe she had heard wrong. Dalgina looked up at Taru, hoping that her friend would laugh, tell her that they would go to Ichika. The words didn't come, and it came crashing into her. Dalgina wouldn't be going home. She was here in this new pack to stay. Her tail sagged down as she nodded her head, tears choked back. Yes. That was where the family lived. It was time to return there. Even if she didn't wish it, she would have to. This was where she lived now.
