In Character

The idea of fighting like a coyote was something that Gabriel had learned in his youth. Both his mother and the Scintilla had shown him how combat worked—and fighting wolves had been one of the major displays of how the cousin species fought differently. Even the hybrids who were part dog fought differently, something that had not been overlooked by Gabriel. He had learned from them, and learned from every person he had ever fought, ever trained with. Each scar was a lesson, and each lesson had been taught in order for him to survive. Had he needed to walk away broken and bloody from fights because in order to learn, he had to suffer.

It was this simple truth that had been carried with him for years, long before a wolf had nearly taken his eyes out and left that scar across his muzzle. It crinkled slightly, finding his memory fall short for a moment. How many wars had there been? More then there should have been, that was for sure. “Three,” he said, trying to remember clearly. “Dahlia de Mai, here. One with Aremys. One with Clouded Tears. I don’t know if there were more before then, but those were the ones I was here for.” Though Aremys had been less of a war and more of a singular brutal attack, something that had culminated with his mother retaking the beach to the north, driving the wolves back to his father’s forest.
