Simply not good enough

The girl had decided to spend the few last hours of the day outside the mansion so that she could take advantage of the last light from the sun before it tumbled over the horizon and introduced the remaining world to the night. She drew one of her twin swords and gazed adoringly at the glistering blade. The girl had been quite surprised when she had pulled them from their sheaths and found them completely free of rust. A rare find indeed, but they had been stored way, away from wind and rain and safely secure in sheaths that had been personally made for each weapon. She found that very odd. The young hybrid was used to cheaper mass production findings and did not fully realize the possible value for the latest twin treasures she had found. She wanted immediately to run to Halifax and try to find a book that could enlighten her about the art of polishing, but Halifax was a sort of frightening place as of lately. Memories lingered with sharp fangs and claws. The girl shuddered uncomfortably in her seat on the porch, afraid to go back to that violent scene.

The girl rose and walked down on the grass holding the sword steadily in one hand and moved it fluently through the air. How she fucking wished for someone that knew this art already. She always felt somewhat stupid when she tried to train her skills with swords. She actually had found one single book on the subject, but one single book could not help her much in the long run. Well, if nothing else then her arms, shoulders and back got some extra strength as she had started to practise every day unless it was raining heavily outside. The sword had been heavy at first, but she was starting to forget that nowadays. That was a great sign that her muscles were being worked and slowly grew stronger and more flexible. Both her hands connected at the shaft now and she let the sword rise up slightly above her head before she swiftly sliced vertically through the air, struggling to keep the whole motion fluid. Still she seemed to lean too much forwards when she cut through the air with it, and quite often she had to take a forced step forward or visibly battle to regain balance.

It was nearing twilight, and the sky was just turning a blazing orange and smoke-gray. This was Gabriel’s favorite time of day, that hazy sort of period where the magic of night was just creeping in. He travelled, as he nearly always did, four-legged and at a comfortable trot. Though certainly he was no stranger to his Optime form, the need for it was overshadowed. With four legs he covered more ground with less effort, and the Waste’s girth was large.
As he followed well-worn paths, cut over the year and a half of constant use, the doggish hybrid came closer to the Mansion. It was not very far from their borders, and even though he still felt the pang of loss for his daughter, there was still a need to check up on the building. Gabriel was only slightly surprised to see his niece out in the open air, a sword drawn. Though he did not slow his approach, he made a point to near the girl. “Practice?” he asked, having seen his son do similar things with other weapons.

Halo was quite amazed when she managed not to jump when her uncle’s voice sounded in the cooling air. Her grip was firm on the weapon and she was far from graceful- in other words he would probably never know how much he startled her. Her focus had been correct, but an oversized ear flickered in disappointment for being caught off-guard so easily. She had wondered why she had been put into the top warrior rank so soon, but had realized that despite not being deserving of it quite yet it had given her a proper motivation to learn the art. She, and probably Gabriel too, had started to understand that this was perhaps the ideal path for her. The young hybrid girl adored the thought of being someone. That was why she was here after all; to find her place, a home where a feeling of belonging was included. She turned to face him fully and gave him a sweet smile.

”I’m hoping to find a sparring partner in the future, I wish Ezekiel was here still,” the girl replied as she slowly lowered the beautiful sword. A comrade to practice with would be much more helpful than free flow. ”I find this weapon quite beautiful,” Halo added as an audible afterthought while twisting the blade slowly with adoration present in her gaze. A needle was forced into her heart and wanted to infest her with sadness and hurt, and she stiffened a little before she relaxed again, regaining that important self control and clung to it desperately. ”How are you?” He was her uncle and it was only appropriate to be polite when there was still too much tension to go completely casual. He was the Aquila and a Lykoi and she deeply respected him.

Ezekiel and Halo had both been moved up quickly; both for different reasons. Gabriel trusted his son utterly, and having seen his work with Cwmfen paying off, knew it was the right decision. Halo, no doubt, could have spent another six months training. What she had proven to him, though, was the ambition. She had killed without a moment’s hesitation. He believed she would follow orders, if only to impress her older relatives (specifically, his mother). The crimson mark on her breast told him that all too clearly.
“I’m fine,” he responded almost automatically. There was no emotional response to the mention of his son. Gabriel too, wished Ezekiel was still present, but could do nothing about this. “Ask Anselm, he might know some more about swords. I don’t use them, so I can’t really teach you anything about that.” Pulling his legs up under him, he sank to a seated position. “As far as sparring, Anselm and I make a point to practice daily. If you’d like to join us I’m sure he’d have no objection.”

Despite the girl’s own belief she did not merely do this for her family. Inferni had a firmer grip on her than she realized. Kaena was closer to her than any other being ever had been in the past, but Gabriel de le Poer held a great amount of respect as well along with the rest of Inferni. She could easily live for the clan’s name alone, but thankfully she had found more within these lands than she had ever hoped for. It was not too long ago that another uncle had opened her eyes. There was more ambition within the young female now. She had seen cruelty and she had seen kindness. She had come here with arrogance and ignorance in her heart. She did no longer wish for the same things and her perspective had changed, though perhaps not for the better.

The girl was vaguely surprised when the Aquila revealed that Anselm possibly knew more about swords. This Anselm person seemed to sit with quite a lot of useful information of every kind. Definitely a valuable member to Inferni. She hoped she would be able to get over her strange shyness and break through in order to help her own abilities by consulting Gabriel’s friend. She was delighted when the daily sparring practise was mentioned. Her uncle could easily have decided not to mention it and she would never have known. She liked the idea. She needed all the training she could get, of all kinds. Practising alone like this was not useless, but it was much slower. The girl smiled at her father’s brother, nodding.

”That’s sounds great. I need all the help I can get.” Not because she was poor at what she did, but because she needed to temporarily mute the bellowing, mental pain in her body. Physical exhaustion was preferable. For a moment the young girl stayed silent, but there was more she wanted to say now when she had the Aquila alone for once. She had not discussed this topic with anyone. Not because she intended it to be a secret, but because it never really fit to toss it in. Gabriel already knew who she was and who had given her life. ”There are wolves from the Soul family here in these lands, isn’t that right?” Now, Halo did not know how common her mother’s name was, but Jael had once briefly mentioned meeting a Soul family member and she had heard that surname mentioned by other canines occasionally.

There was something different about his niece—he could see that in her face. She had left behind the hubris that her father had instilled in her. It was potential he saw in her; the same potential that had moved her to the trio of guards that carried Inferni’s defense on their backs. Even though Halo was very young, he had felt it necessary to give her a duty beyond simply training. Her brothers had abandoned the clan, leaving her alone to bear the burden of her heritage.
Like her more wolfish brother, Halo was interested in the other half of her family. Gabriel’s face darkened, like a cloud passing over the sun. “Most of them live in Dahlia de Mai. You have a half brother named Haku who is a co-leader there. Don’t approach him—that man’s a monster. He’d rip you apart the minute he sees that emblem on your chest.” There was a dire certainty in his tone. No part of him doubted this. Haku would chew her up and scatter her remains on the Inferni borders. Oh certainly, he would. With or without thought of the consequences he would bring down on his pack.

Jael had held conflict in his heart. Enigma and Halo had greedily consumed their father’s words without a second thought. Jael had not. Perhaps that was his siblings’ fault. Their father had taught them that wolves simply did not deserve to live – or something along those lines. Halo’s memory storage was slowly filling up with dim images and doubtful memories of her past. The fiery eyed brother of hers had taken their mother’s look and his siblings, especially Enigma, had always been after him for that. Perhaps their reluctance to let him fit in had caused the white sibling to believe in alternative ways of life. Halo had hungrily swallowed her father’s words, and despite knowing well by now that Vitium was traitor and liar, she could still feel dark clouded rage fill her veins. There were few she would discuss her lupine heritage with. Samael – more than anyone had reminded her of how precious the Lykoi blood was and how disgustingly filthy wolves were.

The darkness gathering in the Aquila’s face wanted to unsettle her, but her smooth face did not falter. She wanted to draw in some of that anger he possessed – wanted to feed of it and get a taste of his hate. While she was aware of the presence of some Soul family, she had not expected to find such a close family member. An aunt perhaps (she knew not that there was one in Aniwaya) and perhaps a few cousins, but not half siblings. Her half sibling’s name was not completely alien to her. His surname had not been know until now, but she had heard the name Haku once or twice. So he was the co-leader of Dahlia. Her own lack of knowledge surprised her, and she made a mental note to care a damn about the world outside of Inferni as well. The word monster both intrigued and horrified her. She already knew a monster, but most of the time he would be on Inferni’s side.

Although she knew Gabriel’s words were serious she could not help but to let a small, content smile slip onto her lips. Haku would see her as Inferni and not as kin. Every proof of belonging to Inferni and two families of Lykoi and de le Poer caused her joy. ”That’s interesting,” the girl started off, imagining bullets diving into her newly discovered half brother – which looked strangely similar to her ivory mother in her mind. ”Maybe someone should rip him apart..” the girl mumbled thoughtfully, wondering if Inferni would ever go as far as to go to war with a wolf pack. It had happened in the past – why not now?

He watched her curiously, amber eyes turning raptor-like as they focused. When had she grown up? Though there had always been a shadow around his brother’s children, he had never truly considered them anything more then children. His decision to make her a Hydra had been out of the severe and unwavering loyalty she held to Inferni, and more importantly, to him. Never once had she questioned or turned away from his orders. She was the balance to his dragon—Hybrid obeyed no word outside of Gabriel’s own, and this was because they understood each other. Outside of words they had used violence, as the coyote’s body showed.
It was Gabriel’s wolfish blood that allowed this. He obeyed the instincts of the predator, of the alpha-male, with the same understanding of God’s Will. Neither could be questioned. They were inane, necessary parts of himself. Without them, he would never have survived. So too was the cruelty; it bled into his eyes and turned them terrible. “He’s a demon,” the Aquila explained, his dark muzzle twisting just slightly. “I intend to rip him from this earth.” There was no threat, only a promise. Gabriel believed that Haku was his greatest enemy, and sought to destroy him.
    Certainly, someone had to.

Whereas this half-brother certainly made the young female curious, the blood that bound them together was judged invalid and was discarded. Halo was good at pushing people and objects away. Half her family had already been rejected by her heart – most likely never again to be let in. Although she had never been particularly close to any of her siblings, it had been a massive blow to her shrunken heart when they had turned their backs at Inferni. It had happened so fast, and so she could not accept any kind of excuse because there was no validity that could be attached to their reasoning. They had not even given their rightful home a decent chance before they suddenly weren’t there anymore. No tears were shed for her disappeared family, for Halo had replaced love with rage. It felt better.

Perhaps it was inappropriate, but Halo had to allow a dark smile to touch her delicate lips. She liked what she saw in the Aquila. Some meant that Inferni had grown weaker in many ways, but there was strength in Gabriel that could charge through fire and water. She liked what he said and gave a court nod. Although the girl did not hunger for battle and death as much as she once had, she could still taste a hint of adrenaline whenever she thought of Inferni lashing out at the wolfen sinners. She wanted the rest of the world to know of the clan’s greatness. Haku already deserved several death sentences if the episode with the coyote mother and her child was true. She wanted to ask why they couldn’t just go and push the wolf pack down to its knees at once, but it was not her business.

She was a mere soldier and not ready for a larger battle than a sparring. While her swords were sharp and her bullets were deadly, she would need more skill with the sword. Bullets were not all that easy to stumble across in this world, and so Halo was quite protective of her ammo. Although she made a point to clean her firearms twice every week, she had not actually used them since she had arrived here. She was certain she would when the time was right. With some remaining unease caused by the Aquila’s presence, the girl remained silent, obedient rubies watching her leader with a peculiar fondness. He was not an uncle she could come to with a torn in her paw, but he had given her what she had desired. A home, a family and a purpose.

It became commonplace, in the face of terrible evils, to let go of the terror and pain and replace it with fury. Gabriel himself did so—no longer did he wake in the nights, screaming, petrified by the bloody visions. Baneesh was long dead and slowly fading from his conscious; this did not mean, of course, he did not remember. Some nights, when he was left alone with his thoughts, the memory would come back. A ghost of some sort, perhaps, reminding him exactly why he had chosen to stand by Inferni and not his father’s blood.
The distance in his eyes faded, focusing again on the girl. She wasn’t much younger then his children. Still, though, he could not shake that darkness from her figure. It clung to her fur like dew, a subtle and soft aura that reminded him of his daughter after the war, his son after he had regained consciousness and the wounds on his face healed. Something traumatic and horrible had come to her. It was as obvious to him as the mark on her chest, which carried a power as well as a curse.
“I can’t help you much with the swords,” he admitted, having limited experience with them. “But if you’d like to practice I know a little about using a spear. It might give you an idea of what to expect from armed combat.”

Perhaps the initial intention lurking behind her sudden interest in obtaining warrior skills was to be able to seek revenge. Although Halo was temporarily broken she still carried a well bottled up rage because of what had happened. She was a vengeful and aggressive creature by nature. Surely she would not settle without moving against her malevolent uncle. Perhaps she would have held a different shape if she had not been so severely poisoned by her father, but the assumed madness of the Lykoi, and perhaps also partly de le Poer was apparent in her. She was still just a sprout yet to fold out its petals. Ears listened closely as the Aquila spoke again. To wield a spear was something that had never interested her even after she had started to dig into the world of warriors. Perhaps it would be more correct to say that she had not thought of it. There were numerous weapons to choose from. To gain knowledge of the spear as well – even the mere basics, would most likely add her some favours in the future. ”Yes, it sounds like a very good idea,” the girl answered truthfully. A moment of silence was allowed before her voice rose once more. ”Do you believe my co-Hydra could teach me anything valuable?” She had expected some sort of comradeship bloom between herself and Hybrid, but it seemed clear to her that he held no interest whatsoever to interact with her.

Vienna had taught Gabriel how to carry and wield a spear, but he had been clumsy and lacked the skill she carried. Even though her blood had been mixed, the lithe and long-legged coyote blood had granted her with a feral, cat-like grace. She had never lost to him, even when he used his greater weight against her. Everything she had taught him he intended to show his niece, given that she too was much smaller then many wolves in the area. Even though he despised her father, he did not want the girl to come to any harm—something that would have crushed him, had he known she all ready had.
“Hybrid?” Gabriel echoed, lifting both ears to form a mock-crown atop his head. “He knows how to fight like a coyote,” the Aquila explained, smiling strangely. “He fights hard and he fights to kill. He’s been here for years, and been in every war that Inferni has seen. If you can convince him to spar with you, you’ll learn.” Everything else aside, Hybrid had experience, and had not let his size cripple him. That was the greatest strength that she could learn from her co-Hydra, wickedness aside.

For a moment the young woman debated whether or not to feel insulted when her Aquila said that her co-Hydra fought like a coyote. Her mind wanted to add double meaning to the words he chose to speak – that she could not fight like the canines on the side she had chosen to represent. An ear swivelled sideways as she quietly banished the sour attempt to spread seeds of doubt into her own mind. If there was something Halo had severe difficulties with, it was trust. Until now she had been unable to find creatures with authority that did not sow lies into her young veins. Gabriel was her leader and she wanted to trust his words and know that they were true. There were no hints of her mixed blood in his words. He did not hate her for who had given her life. Perhaps he had known reluctance in her early stages of membership, but she had and would still do everything in her power to ensure him that she was his Hydra. He had made her heart swell with pride when he had granted her the title of Hydra. She was damn proud to be a part of his plan, even if this included Samael Lykoi.

The rest of Gabriel words tempted the young hybrid. She had disliked her co-warrior for some time now – he had seemed arrogant and reluctant to dignify her any attention whenever she had seen him about. She did not like his ways, as if he was better than her. Perhaps he was, but he did not have to parade about like he did. Despite her harsh thoughts she would not attempt to track Hybrid Holocaust down and try to convince the older male to give her feral combat lessons. The girl wanted to learn and master everything that could be taught about fighting, and it was just a small bonus if she was required to grow a bit more of her spine to deal with the other Hydra in the clan. She was still learning how to turn obstacles into opportunities. She liked the sound of Hybrid’s broad experience from other battles. ”How many wars has there been, Gabriel?” the girl could hear herself ask. Kaena had spoken of Inferni’s history in brief words, but if there were more details to be found then Halo wanted to hear.

The idea of fighting like a coyote was something that Gabriel had learned in his youth. Both his mother and the Scintilla had shown him how combat worked—and fighting wolves had been one of the major displays of how the cousin species fought differently. Even the hybrids who were part dog fought differently, something that had not been overlooked by Gabriel. He had learned from them, and learned from every person he had ever fought, ever trained with. Each scar was a lesson, and each lesson had been taught in order for him to survive. Had he needed to walk away broken and bloody from fights because in order to learn, he had to suffer.

It was this simple truth that had been carried with him for years, long before a wolf had nearly taken his eyes out and left that scar across his muzzle. It crinkled slightly, finding his memory fall short for a moment. How many wars had there been? More then there should have been, that was for sure. “Three,” he said, trying to remember clearly. “Dahlia de Mai, here. One with Aremys. One with Clouded Tears. I don’t know if there were more before then, but those were the ones I was here for.” Though Aremys had been less of a war and more of a singular brutal attack, something that had culminated with his mother retaking the beach to the north, driving the wolves back to his father’s forest.

Distance filled up her brilliantly red orbs as she imagined those three major conflicts Gabriel spoke of. Inferni seemed fond of war – or perhaps it was the opposite. War found the coyote clan. The reason for this was obvious, for it seemed wolves and coyotes were unable to live in the same lands without creating conflicts. Halo had chosen her Lykoi surname with pride the day she decided that she belonged with her coyote family. Without her bastard of a father’s influence she would have wandered through life as an always misunderstood hybrid trying to live the wolfen life. Thankfully Vitium had proven not to be completely useless and enlightened her some. Lies or not, they had set her out on her path towards Inferni. Unfortunately her siblings had failed completing their quest, but Halo was still standing and intended to walk in Kaena Lykoi’s foot prints until she had grown enough to get her own shoes and make history in Gabriel’s Inferni. There was so much she wanted – most of her thoughts and desires had not changed. Only small alternations had been made as her fairytale world had been punctured.

She nodded and snapped out of her dreamy gaze – again focusing on her uncle. ”I’d like to accept your offer to learn how to use a spear in fight. Is an actual spear required for the first session?” She knew little of how strict her Aquila was in teaching sessions and if he required a proper weapon first day then she would dart to Halifax and search until she found the actual item or something that resembled it as closely as possible. Halifax was a goldmine, but it could not always provide the treasure seeker with the right kind of glitter. She should take time to gather several other weapons as well if she came across them. Perhaps she could find something of use in the same store where she had found her beautiful swords. A shiver went through her at the thought of having to visit the scene where Samael had ruined her for life. The pavement would probably still have remaining stains of all that blood. Perhaps an empty, picked out skull would grin at her. The thought was horrifying, but that store was a good place to start looking for weapons of other kinds.

She was ready to dedicate herself ultimately to this world. He knew that from the star emblazoned on her chest, and the way she had struck down that wolf without second thought. Halo Lykoi would be a warrior—she had not spent enough time in training, but the time for these things was past. Even Hybrid trained, in his own way, just as Gabriel and Anselm practiced through routines they both knew by heart now. To kill was to take a great step forward, and he intended to see that her kill was honored. She would need to rise to an even greater challenge soon, and use the rage that he knew existed in her body. It was a power, but one that required a great skill in order to be great.

“No,” he answered quickly, suddenly refocused on the task at hand. “I wouldn’t start you off with a real weapon for a long time,” he continued, knowing that even with her practice with the swords, the dangers of using something real were much greater. “In order to use a spear, the spear needs to find you.” At least, Vienna had told him that. “You’ll need a branch that’s probably about your height, and straight. Get one of those, bring it back, and remove all the bark from it. Once you have that, we can start your lessons.”

She felt almost cheated when the man said that no, she would not be starting off with a real weapon until time had passed .This was how it should be though. Halo had started immediately with a dangerously sharp sword, not a stick as she should have. She was fresh and she had started by her own without knowledge. Her consistent training was starting to give results in both handling the weight of the blade and ability to steer it. The way Gabriel chose to go about the spear caused refreshed interest to flush through her despite the obvious disappointment that she could not start off with the actual weapon. She understood and would obey though. She liked the thought of being chosen, though to be honest she found the fact that the spear would have to find her. On the other hand, perhaps it was not. It was immature of her to underestimate her Aquila’s words. She had come to understand that the worst he spoke held meaning, for there were not a whole lot of them. He went straight to the point and refrained from adding unnecessary speech.

Ruby eyes glittered as she nodded and smiled widely at the uncle that seemed not so bad after all. ”How dense should it be?” not too thick and not too thin, obviously. She knew nothing of this type of weapon and it would not come triumphant for her first lesson with a stick that would not do. Despite her weary muscles she could feel energy seep right back into her body again. Whatever helped to cause her body to scream louder than her upset inner voice was god sent and would help the girl to become worthy of her warrior rank in the future. At the moment she did not feel worthy of it, though she did not doubt her Aquila’s judgment either.

Gabriel saw, and recognized, the youthful arrogance in her eyes. She didn’t want to be babied, and she didn’t want to start playing with toys. Neither had he. Vienna’s silly speech about using sticks and finding the energy in them had been a bunch of crock…at least until she had thrown him on his ass. Twice. They had been close in size then, even though she had been thinner, but once she had that weapon in her hands it was like playing with fire. Vienna was a dangerous beast, and did not belong on these shores. Had he known she had wound up on a pirate ship, spending half her time between the ocean and the wilds of that foreign country she had so often spoken of, he would have been happy for her. Even though she was no longer a part of his world, and even though they had been nothing more then friends, a great deal of fond memories and love was held for the dreadlock wearing, ice-eyed mouthy half breed that hadn’t been afraid of anything.

He saw a part of her in his niece, in the way her eyes turned that gem-hard ruby, in how she carried herself and how she practiced without need for companionship. Now, though, they needed her to gain the trust of her fellow clan-mates and understand how Inferni worked as a team. It was a peculiar team, with different languages in different times, and from one face to another, but they understood each other still. Halo was still a child—she was still learning what she needed in order to flourish here. “You should be able to close your hand around it,” he answered, unwilling to give her anything scientific. Anselm might have, with all of his jargon and measurements and books, but Gabriel subscribed to a much simpler view. “Find that and we’ll work from there. And don’t worry,” he added, letting the cold demeanor shift to a small smile. “I lost mine in the fire over the mountain, so I’ve gotta find one too.”

Halo had gotten the taste for solitude when she had first come here and her brothers had left her behind. She had found the mansion abandoned and lived there with her rodents as her only companions. Luckily Kaena Lykoi had wandered into her path and allowed Halo to step into her warm embrace as kin and fellow clan member. She had always found comfort in the older woman, though for a long time it had been the only other member that she had interacted with regularly. Of course it was impossible to avoid every other clan member in the long run – this was not what she had done either – but she had failed to get well along with most of her fellow coyotes after her siblings had left her side. Then a family member had betrayed her trust and done this horrible thing to her and the girl worked very hard not to become completely antisocial and retreat back to her room never to come out into daylight again. Somehow she had found this way of coping and it was working. Her mind almost seemed to find peace at times and best of all: all the time she was slowly working her skills so that she would one day be able to retaliate for what the former loner and now clan member had done to her. Unacceptable. Ruby eyes did not reveal the hurt that deserved to see the light of day. She sought to push her full attention over to Gabriel and his doggish form, for it would be no good for thoughts to linger with memories that inflicted pain.

His answer was simple yet very helpful. The young woman gave him a nod and a sigh, though it was one of relief and not weariness. From the moment she had found Inferni’s borders and met with Gabriel de le Poer for the first time, she had wanted to prove her worth. She had been a child of mixed spirits and both her parents had been unworthy of Inferni membership. He had given her a chance and she had wished for him to see her for who she was for so long now. She felt honoured for being offered lessons in spears and his interest in her dedication. Her black and copper tail waves with genuine expression as the Aquila of Inferni even granted her a small smile. She was looking very much forward to this and ached for a stick this instance. She would run off to the woods south of the clan lands and find a suitable branch in the forest overtaken by arachnids. Halo was not too enthusiastic about the overpopulated spiders, but the weather was colder now and forced the eight legged creatures into hibernation or whatever they did to survive when winter kicked in. ”I will find one straight away,” the Lykoi announced with the brightest of smiles, suddenly eager to be dismissed so that she could run for the southern forest at once.

Gabriel had known only of Halo’s fascination with rats in passing, having not seen the intricacy of her set up or known much of her training. He was glad, though, that she had begun to work with her fellow clan members and really find a place in the clan. Had she not, as her brothers had made apparent, she would have been gone long ago. If he had known, though it was likely he never would, what had happened between his niece and Samael, he would have torn the man asunder. Halo had filled a void in his clan, and she was not only a coping tool for his mother, but for Gabriel as well. Even though he would not admit it, she reminded him of his own daughter, and this was a large part of why he was so eager to see her succeed.

Her expression told him now that she was no longer dreading the work ahead of them, but instead the need to find her purpose and make herself great. “Well, get to it. I’ll see you soon.” With a nod and a faint smile, his black-gold fur shifted with the turning breeze and his feet lifted his body. Without a further farewell, he began trotting back towards the borders, intending to resume his patrol (and perhaps, now that his niece was on board, head south and find himself a suitable weapon as well).
