A Whale of a Tale

A whale, mammal of the sea. Well, it was indeed a strange creature that swam in the ocean but had ended up stranded on this beach. Nayru stared up at it, moving about it’s body and thinking over Conor’s words. Lumber to push it out? With just the four of them and Nayru too young to shift she wasn’t sure how they could accomplish that. She did not say so, for voicing uncertainties and negative ideas would damper their optimism and hope. Instead she turned as Gideon appeared, favoring him with a smile and wag of the tail as she hadn’t any of the adults and then turning back to the whale as he kept close to Bris. "You‘ll be okay, don‘t worry." Nayru whispered to the words to the whale, knowing that creatures other than canines did not understand her but feeling that perhaps the animals might take comfort in them all the same.

Others arrived, both female strangers that she did not know. That made three of them and Nayru peered up at them without words, even as one of them offered a name. Reverent. Instead she inhaled the salty smell of the sea and turned dark red eyes out to the water that stretch too far to see any land. Again she directed her words to no one in particular, her whispery voice almost swallowed by the sounds of the whale’s breath and the nature roll of the waves. "If we could keep it alive until the tide came back in it wouldn‘t be too hard at all, not with all of us." Nayru knew very little about the whale and she would admit as much, but water she understood. She knew the tide would come back up, eventually, and she also knew that heavy objects, such as whales, were lighter in the salty water. When the water rose if they could just get the whale started… eventually it would thrash and thump and help it’s self out to sea.
