He had been sitting on the porch for a small bit of time. Having freed himself from the confines of the Manor Alder was now completely overwhelmed. The world looked much smaller when he was beside his mother, or entangled in her legs or even just with his brothers. Now, alone, it was huge. The same font yard sat in front of the porch, a place he had played so many times before and yet… it seemed like an ocean of green ready to swallow him up if he happened to step onto it. The forest beyond was dark in the early morning light, and he was very unsure if he would ever leave the porch. Maybe when he was bigger, stronger and could defend himself from the monsters that lurked in the shade of the large trees. He had been told to not be afraid, been told that it was safe within the boundaries of their pack, but he was still unsure where those were. With an uneasy look on his masked face the tree-named male sat with his eyes on the outside.

It was early, and the birds chirped at him. They had been his original quarry, and now that he had made it out the big door (for that was quite the accomplishment) Alder could see their small bodies zip and zoom beyond his nose. They perched in trees, sitting so gracefully on even the thinnest of branches and then sprang from it with almost impossible agility. They drew a smile out of him, the sparrows and finches mingling and tweeting away as if Alder would understand. He didn’t, grumbling a puppy noise at them in the hopes that they would turn to speaking the language he was used to. But they didn’t hear him. They kept swirling through the air, flying from one tree to a red dotted bush and then back to another tree. He growled again, trying so hard to be brave, but it came as a deep whine instead.

A bark, forgetting that there might be someone around to hear and thus scold him, brought Alder to his large dark paws and he stepped down the few steps that it took to get to the soft ground. Carefully he made his way, then looked up to see if they had heard him yet.
