Fall Away

The cold was creeping into her tiny body quickly, invading and forcing the warmth out. It had started in her toes, which had long since gone completely numb, tingling at first and then burning, then finally nothing. The tingling feeling was creeping up her legs now, despite how much she kicked and thrashed them. The girl did her best to try and pull herself out, grabbing and grabbing, throwing her weight forward, only to slide away and plunge back into the water. The only hold on the ice that she had was the broken edge, which her fingers were having trouble keeping hold of. The tingle had entered her fingers, a very vague burning sensation taking them over. She was going to die here.

A voice came then, from just beyond the edge of the springs. Nox couldn't make out his words, they were muffled by the pounding of her heart in her ears and the panicked breaths that she continued to suck in. Gold-green eyes swept across the ice, finally finding the wolf that spoke. Her gaze was glued on to him, she didn't know who he was, and when he spoke again his words snapped her out of her trance. Could she get out? No. No, she couldn't. Did she want to tell him so, this complete stranger? She was caught in a struggle, both physically and mentally.

"Pl-ple-please!" It came suddenly in the form of a frightened cry, a cry for help. Her will to live had proven stronger than her fear of others, the shyness that she often felt around strangers, her embarrassment over how different she seemed to be from everyone else. Her hands slipped then, pulling away from the ice with no warning, and the inky colored girl plunged back into the water. Limbs thrashed like mad, trying to force herself back to the surface. Her chest hurt though, it felt tight, and her arms and legs were growing tired. She didn't know if she could make it back to the top.
