Fall Away

Evening was coming fast, the sun making last of it's decent behind the horizon, and soon the lands would be blanketed in darkness. Nox had been farther into the forest, settling down for the night with her siblings, when something caught her eye. It looked, at least from what she could see, like a yellow-green glow, much like her own eyes. It caused her to jump to her feet, wide-eyed and searching. A firefly. It was the first thing that came to her mind, but she couldn't see it anymore. Nox loved fireflies and she'd yet to have gotten the chance to get to know the ones in this area. She crossed her arms suddenly, rubbing her hands through her fur, crouching down. She began off slowly then, quiet in the way that her tiny body moved, heading for the area that the light had come from.

The girl continued on for a while with no sign of her supposed firefly, frowning as she went along. Suddenly, as she took a step forward, she lost her footing and landed face first against the ground. The inky black girl wasn't still though, she was moving, sliding across the ice. Panicked, she attempted to scramble her way to her feet, but when she managed to put most of her weight down on one leg, a sickening crack broke the silence. In she went, feet first, plunging down into the cold water. Her body, though small and light, sunk fast but she was able to fight her way back to the surface. "Z..zz..a-adi?" She wailed, though her voice wouldn't carry far. She was shivering already, hands gripping with all that they could against the side of the ice, but she was already starting to slip.

indent He knew that he should be wandering back to Storm around this time, for he was still considered a youngster and he knew it would make his father feel reassured. His pneumonia had relapsed and so Pilot had been temporarily handed the leadership position of Storm. It didn’t seem much different, Icarus had discovered, but it did mean that his father once again was spending less time with his family. Really, though, he couldn’t help it. But Icarus couldn’t help but feel as if he was slipping away from his only parental figure. But then again, maybe that was just part of growing up.

indent He found himself becoming more and more comfortable in his optime form, wearing the snug jeans that he had discovered in the city. They were ripped in the knee and thigh, but it was the closest thing he could find that was near his size and still intact. He would probably grow out of them as he got older, considering they hugged his hips already, but he still cherished them at the moment. To him, it was the first indication that he was growing older.

indent He trailed along a stand of trees, knowing that the springs were not too far off. He wondered how much was still frozen, since spring would be coming any time now. He had the notion in his mind to investigate, until something more interesting perked his interest.

indent It was a call, a whine for something Icarus couldn’t quite make out. Either way, the voice sounded distressed, and so Icarus beginning jogging in the direction he assumed it came from. His discovered his intuition was right, when he quickly laid eyes on the wet and struggling form of Nox. "Heyy, are you okay?" He called, though he already knew the answer. He took a few steps on the ice, as thoughts of meeting Legacy rushed to him, before he hesitated and wondered… would the ice hold his weight? "Can you pull yourself out", he asked, trying to decide if he would need to risk the ice by getting closer to her.

The cold was creeping into her tiny body quickly, invading and forcing the warmth out. It had started in her toes, which had long since gone completely numb, tingling at first and then burning, then finally nothing. The tingling feeling was creeping up her legs now, despite how much she kicked and thrashed them. The girl did her best to try and pull herself out, grabbing and grabbing, throwing her weight forward, only to slide away and plunge back into the water. The only hold on the ice that she had was the broken edge, which her fingers were having trouble keeping hold of. The tingle had entered her fingers, a very vague burning sensation taking them over. She was going to die here.

A voice came then, from just beyond the edge of the springs. Nox couldn't make out his words, they were muffled by the pounding of her heart in her ears and the panicked breaths that she continued to suck in. Gold-green eyes swept across the ice, finally finding the wolf that spoke. Her gaze was glued on to him, she didn't know who he was, and when he spoke again his words snapped her out of her trance. Could she get out? No. No, she couldn't. Did she want to tell him so, this complete stranger? She was caught in a struggle, both physically and mentally.

"Pl-ple-please!" It came suddenly in the form of a frightened cry, a cry for help. Her will to live had proven stronger than her fear of others, the shyness that she often felt around strangers, her embarrassment over how different she seemed to be from everyone else. Her hands slipped then, pulling away from the ice with no warning, and the inky colored girl plunged back into the water. Limbs thrashed like mad, trying to force herself back to the surface. Her chest hurt though, it felt tight, and her arms and legs were growing tired. She didn't know if she could make it back to the top.
