around me as i swam, the drifters who'd gone under

Frustration and hope made strange bedfellows, but as Geneva continued to work against time she felt she had utterly lost, she could begin to feel the first glimmers of hope. Every day, as if sleep walking, she would traverse through the destruction of her home, lime green eyes taking note of each ruin that reached up from the ground half-covered in snow, the skeletons of structures that had once stood proud as part of Phoenix Valley. It was hard not to be overwhelmed and devastated all at once, so she tried to take this experience a day at a time, a task at a time, and sometimes a minute at a time, if that was what it took to get through to the next moment.

She found herself at Mirror Lakes Villa that day, a small town that had suffered relatively little damage. There was some structural damage, but it seemed as though the Villa had escaped the storm relatively unscathed. She pushed open one of the simple wooden doors of the rather rustic church, lime green eyes adjusting to the dim view inside. The beautiful stained glass windows cast muted light all around, reflecting the grayness of the outside light.

She had pushed many of the pews against the walls to create a greater amount of space. Now she looked at the floor plan, wondering if she could somehow find some castoff furniture to make the modestly sized, yet drafty church more homey. It was a poor substitute for Three Moons Ranch, but it would have to do. She wanted to focus on the herds next, and find them safe lodging, but her first priority was setting up a base of operations for their pack. For as active as Jefferson was, he needed a safe place to rest at the end of the day. And even if she couldn't exactly strap him down and make him rest, she could at least provide him a safe place for their pack mates to seek him out, so she could try to keep him out of any further danger. Lime green eyes turned to the ceiling of the peaked roof, as if looking for answers in the rafters, or for assistance from beyond.
