A Stroll with a Stranger

The day was nice to say the least. Jaden plodded along, relaxed and angry with himself. Again he was putting off his purpose for being in this territory. The entire reason he had traveled this far from Alaska. The man he was to kill lived for at least one more day in the safety of his pack. The Optime kept asking himself why he was procrastinating the assassination. The sooner he finished his business, the sooner he could figure out what the hell else he had to do with his life. The thought of settling here kept crossing his mind, maybe finding a pack to join; creating a new life free from unnecessary bloodshed and pain. The wolves around these parts seemed nice enough and there were no tensions or wars littering the land that he could see. The prey seemed plentiful and the climate reminded him of the home he could never return to. This place was nearly perfect in his dark blue eyes. That was the only reason he kept putting off his job. As soon as he killed the ALPHA of Cour des Miracles, he would be forced to vacate this land or face a blood thirsty pack.

With a sigh, the male turned his thoughts to this day. Wandering in the shadows of the ‘Dampwoods’ was tuning out to be very enjoyable. The thick foliage gave off a comforting smell that helped to cleanse away every annoying thought threatening Jaden’s mood. Each step felt nice. Places and days like this made nature seem so much more homely then it did normally.

A pleasant feeling caused Jaden to stop his slow stroll. A small break in the tree line allowed a sweet stream of warm sunlight to cascade into the shadows and fall across his lower back nicely. Turning to let the warmth find his red dyed chest and belly, Jaden stretched a little. He did not stay long in the light though. Despite the cool temperature of the air, it would not take long for the thick furred Tundra wolf to overheat. His thick, black mane atoned to that by holding the sun’s heat long after he had turned his back away from it. The dark red spots on his shoulders and hips absorbed heat just as well as the rest of his black fur did, so it was only a few minutes before he moved away from the break in shade, content and overly warm. His winter undercoat still rested in place almost maliciously in these warm spring days. It had begun to shed, but not quickly enough, and Jaden found himself cursing his thick fur for the millionth time in his life as he shook away some of the heat.

A soft scent broke the Alaskan away from his content daze in mid step. A female’s distinct smell held in the semi-still air. Her smell was definite, but unfamiliar. He had never encountered anything similar before. Yet another species of canine Jaden did not know of. It seemed there where many oddities around here that did not have habitat in Alaska. The man didn’t bother drawing his dagger from the place it held on his leather shoulder strap or the bow from its quiver. Today was simply too nice to interrupt with violence. Hell, Jaden thought to himself, I might even deal with a coyote nicely today. Whether this was true or not was unimportant. She didn’t hold the stink of a coyote and that made her just fine to interact with.

Pushing though some of the smaller shrubbery toward the origin of the scent revealed that she was much closer than he’d thought. Only going a little ways before coming upon a rather interestingly colored dark wolf, or at least that is what she appeared to be to him, was a little displacing. “Oh, hello stranger,” Jaden said, a little surprised and frozen in place. She was close enough that she might have possibly heard or even seen him before now, though he had not heard her. His nose twitched with a little more self-scolding. One of these days a violent or dodgy character would just walk upon him and stomp right on his tail before he even noticed the person’s presence.
