Walking through the Dampwoods was like taunting the beast within. As she stalked further north, her footsteps became louder. Every strike of her padded paw against the increasingly rocky ground reminded her how close she was to Inferni and reminded her of her incessant obsession. She wanted to find Hybrid Holocaust again for a number of things. She wanted to hurt him and she wanted to learn from him. She wanted to see who he was and why the way he was. She hated him but there was so much about him that completely fascinated her. It was a morbid curiosity and it was a moribund wish of hers to learn more.

As she trekked north, the soft, pine needle-ladden forest floor fell away, giving way to rolling hills and more sparsely-vegetated regions. She could see over the hills to the parts to which Inferni laid claim. From her slightly elevated position, she could even hear the waves crashing against the sand to the far west, beyond Inferni’s borders. She smiled. She liked how no land creature could claim the water as their own. Humans had tried and failed and she suspected canines would never try. They might float boats upon the water’s surface, but it was not the same.

She tried to ignore her desire to venture into Inferni and instead continued north. She still looked out over the charred remains of the forest below and the beaches in the distance, but perhaps if she could remain this close to the territory and not venture forth, then perhaps she will have conquered that strange unnameable desire that lived within her.
If she could just prove to herself that she was more than this strange fascination, then perhaps she could finally say there was nothing wrong with her.

But that would be a lie. Even as she stopped again to stare down at Inferni’s territories, she couldn’t help but wonder why she felt more of a kinship to Inferni than she did to Salsola or she had to Anathema. She would never survive this.

She sighed as she rested a hand on a tree and then leaned her arm and followed this with her entire body so she was practically clutching the tree. What was wrong with her?
