Was it too late for her to learn the letters? She looked at the book she had looked at hundreds of times before, and wondered if she could even learn the words. For years Anu had been content not know what the words said, she simply enjoyed the pictures of the blossoms and flowers. But now, she wondered if she could learn. When she had once thought that it was simply not her way, Anu was thinking that it could be. What happened in the AniWayan prison had changed her. It had given her the scar along her neck and had made her different inside. So why not change this as well?

The gentle wolfess did not want to remember what she had done in order to survive, she did not wish to think of the pain she had caused in revenge for her own suffering. But those memories came to her, and she sought a distraction. Candles made from the bee's hive in the orchard were precious items, and she burned their wick. The fire burned, giving off an orange glow, but the candles lit her task that sat on the worn blanket spread over her legs.

Fingers turned the page, but she closed her eyes before she look at the meaningless print. Anu shivered, her mind so weak that when it failed to protect her. She was lost to the memories.
