Better than revenge

Because it was dark, he didn't see that the woman had a knife in her hand. If he had, he wouldn't have been stupid enough to just stand there. But he didn't see, and was thrown completely off guard when she started growling at him. Vikas jumped back instantly at the sound, his ears flattening. Even her warning growls didn't tell him what he really needed to know. He just thought she was embarrassed at being caught on the ground, or perhaps she just didn't want some stranger walking into her camp. Those were both reasonable responses, in his mind. The girl was up in a flash, towering over him with a tall, almost skeletal form. The dog snarled at him, her white teeth glowing in the night.

Finally, Vikas responded semi-appropriately. He tensed, his own fur bristling visibly, and hunched down a bit into a better pose to defend himself. His fists were tightened, ready to swing at anything that got too close. His yellow eyes were narrowed and focused on her body, trying to anticipate her attack. It was rare that anyone actually attacked, even with verbal warnings, but one could never be too sure. In fact, this woman was indeed the sort that would fight with little provocation. Her loud howl irritated him and caused his own lips to peel back into a snarl. Vikas let out a bark as she pounced, jumping back another foot or two to try and avoid her. He didn't see the rock flying through the air, so the saluki's sudden collapse alarmed and confused him. He looked down, unconvinced that she was no longer a threat.

Vikas only pulled his gaze away from her when a second figure tromped up the mountainside. He gave a deep, guttural growl at the sight of him. He had no way of knowing just yet whether he was a friend or foe. The man was huge. Fighting him would be like David fighting Goliath, only Goliath was the one with the slingshot. Vikas wasn't looking forward to dying that day, so he stopped short of doing anything more disrespectful than his initial growl. His eyes flashed down to the woman again, her glare telling him that he was just barely in safety. Whatever truce they had, Vikas got the feeling it would end abruptly if he made a wrong move.

The short male stood upright, relaxing his hands out of fists. He was still on edge, as could be seen from his body posture, but he didn't want to start a fight. It killed him that he couldn't just fight. He wanted to, the adrenaline was coursing through his veins and driving him insane. But he had no choice but to submit. Vikas looked to the male, some sort of mutt by the looks of it. He couldn't quite figure out what he had stumbled into. He had determined by now that the guy must have hit her with something to make her fall. But he also obviously knew her. So what was their relationship? Was he on Vikas' side?

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause any trouble," he said quickly. He was furious that he had to apologize, but it was better than getting his face mashed in. From the angry look he gave the female, it was obvious his apology was not all that sincere. "I don't know what you mean by 'my kind', but I really wasn't looking to bother anyone." And that was true. He had only wanted to go back to his little lean-to and go to bed.
