The chorus of howls from the hunters sounded through the forest. Only Fawkes did not join in on the celebration. He never understood why wolves howled, but he enjoyed the large prey they were able to take down. Fawkes liked to believe that he was the only red-tailed hawk who had access to meat from moose or other large prey. As the two canines announced their triumph Fawkes glided down to the carcass and began tearing at hit with his beak and claws. While he ate he made sure to steer clear of the hungry canines and their sharp fangs.

When her elated cried died Hotaru turned to the feast before her. She licked her lips and dug in savagely. The huntress hadn't realized how hungry she was until the first bits of flesh were in her mouth. She tore at the meat and savored it's succulent taste. The taste was beyond compare and she enjoyed every mouthful. Before her accident and even an hour ago Hotaru didn't think it would be possible for her to take down something as large and powerful as a moose. But with Fawkes and Terra to help, she was able to do just that. When Terra came close Hotaru allowed the coywolf access to any meat that she wanted. Terra had taken the lead in their hunt, which made it her right to claim those sections. Still, Hotaru growled a little before she moved over. They were after all, the best bits of flesh.

It wasn't the first time Hotaru had tasted moose meat, but for some reason it seemed sweeter, more tender than before. Perhaps is was the sure joy of her success or the increased sense of taste after her accident. Either way, Hotaru had never tasted anything so wonderful. The grey wolf ate until she was full and her belly bulged. She moved back and found a nice place to rest at the base of a tree. Fawkes wasn't far behind and soon both bird and wolf were cleaning themselves. When her tongue bath was finished Hotaru said contently, "Terra, remind me to go hunting with you more often."
