Tears fell from Selene's eyes, and Hadley set into a panic. He'd done something wrong, he knew it. Otherwise there was no way she would be crying so hard. Whining he lowered her head, gently licking away her tears as fast as he could. What was wrong? Her words took him back completely. Not good enough for him? Hadley was the one always running to catch up, afraid of not being able to protect her, that she would strike him like Amy and return to the rich life she left behind.
Selene pulled completely away, leaving a baffled Hadley to stare at her. What should he do? Gently he reached out a hand, pulling back before he touched her. She'd pulled away from him. Selene wouldn't want him butting back in, touching her when it was clearly unwanted. Hadley adjusted the fur blankets around. He slipped out of the bed onto the ground to let Selene have the space she suddenly seemed to crave. Looking out of the cave he watched the sky, stars glittering so brightly. Even if he couldn't touch her, at least Hadley could stay and watch over her.
