Ding dong ditch.

We talked about doing this a little while ago, but I didn't have the chance to start until now. I'm hoping it's ok to say this takes place shortly after the end of the festival because I don't think Orin could have kept her secret from the pack for very long (nor would I want her to).

Orin had a secret.

A secret that she couldn’t keep for much longer, nor did she want to. When she first returned from the festival grounds after the merchants dispersed she was able to cover up her real bounty thanks to the piglet and other treasures she brought home. But the real fortune that she had brought home had been too frail and delicate to reveal right away. Orin had been at odds with herself from the start; she couldn’t trust anyone else with the gem she had found, but she wasn’t entirely secure with bringing it back to Cercatori d’Arte, either, in light of the pack’s current “plight.” But this was it, there was no more hiding what she had found in the wilderness that day. Too much time would pass. For now she could explain herself, but if she waited much longer this could be seen as an act of disloyalty… keeping this kind of secret from her pack.

Moving through the barn, her footfalls were nearly silent beneath the sounds of the various animals. D’Arte’s stock had grown abundant, including many sheep, chickens, Soraya the Cow, and the as yet unnamed piglet Orin had brought home. Yet for once, this morning, it wasn’t to the animals that she moved. Now she walked to the open area, a place in which just a little while ago she had changed out soiled straw for a fresh bed of hay, and looked down at the bright gray face that smiled up at her.

“Are you ready, pigeon?” She asked the pup, whose body was half masked in the straw. She had taken to burrowing in the hay as some sort of game. A sharp bark and then her toes were being nipped at was all the response she needed.

When she found the puppy she had been on the brink of death. Now, in just a few days’ time, she was vibrant and strong again, although still a little thin; Soraya’s milk had helped a lot, and the fact that the puppy was old enough for meat helped too.

“Come on,” she said and held her arms open. She didn’t have to do much but catch the flying puppy as Sarian leaped into her arms. Sometimes she was hard to keep hold of, just like now, as she wriggled in her grasp as Orin headed out of the barn and down the Thornbury row.

It wasn’t long before she was at that all too familiar doorstep; Skye’s house. She loved her Capitana but today her heart beat in her chest as if trying to burst out. She couldn’t knock while holding the child, so she set Sarian down and rapped on the door.

“Skye? Are you home? I’ve got something to tell you…” she spoke softly through the door, not wanting to alert anyone who might be in the area as to her antics. Yet just after the last knock sounded Sarian bolted, taking off after god knows what down the row.

“Sarian! No! Wait! Come back here, right now!” And Orin ran after her, consequently doorbell ditching her own alpha.
