Cerberus blinked in surprise at the words that trickled out of Insomnia’s mouth; he couldn’t tell if she had really meant to say that or was just thinking aloud. Either way, he stared at her with brows raised in question, his tail lying limp at his ankles as he did so. Was it really possible for her to have fallen in love with him so quickly? Or was it not love at all, but in fact lust or infatuation? This thought made Cerberus cock his head to one side. Then he sat down beside Insomnia, turning his gaze on the murky water yet again in order to collect his thoughts. Sure, he’d grown to like Ciara quickly many moons ago, but this desire rising inside Insomnia seemed to amount far quicker. Perhaps she really was terribly unhappy with Shadowfang? The suspicion made him feel terribly sorry for the poor girl.

Look, over there! he said, his tail wagging a little faster. Then he sprinted toward the boat, leaping through the tall grass like a rabbit on his way over to the dock that rested beside it.
