Simply not good enough

There was something different about his niece—he could see that in her face. She had left behind the hubris that her father had instilled in her. It was potential he saw in her; the same potential that had moved her to the trio of guards that carried Inferni’s defense on their backs. Even though Halo was very young, he had felt it necessary to give her a duty beyond simply training. Her brothers had abandoned the clan, leaving her alone to bear the burden of her heritage.
Like her more wolfish brother, Halo was interested in the other half of her family. Gabriel’s face darkened, like a cloud passing over the sun. “Most of them live in Dahlia de Mai. You have a half brother named Haku who is a co-leader there. Don’t approach him—that man’s a monster. He’d rip you apart the minute he sees that emblem on your chest.” There was a dire certainty in his tone. No part of him doubted this. Haku would chew her up and scatter her remains on the Inferni borders. Oh certainly, he would. With or without thought of the consequences he would bring down on his pack.
