In Character

Gabriel saw, and recognized, the youthful arrogance in her eyes. She didn’t want to be babied, and she didn’t want to start playing with toys. Neither had he. Vienna’s silly speech about using sticks and finding the energy in them had been a bunch of crock…at least until she had thrown him on his ass. Twice. They had been close in size then, even though she had been thinner, but once she had that weapon in her hands it was like playing with fire. Vienna was a dangerous beast, and did not belong on these shores. Had he known she had wound up on a pirate ship, spending half her time between the ocean and the wilds of that foreign country she had so often spoken of, he would have been happy for her. Even though she was no longer a part of his world, and even though they had been nothing more then friends, a great deal of fond memories and love was held for the dreadlock wearing, ice-eyed mouthy half breed that hadn’t been afraid of anything.

He saw a part of her in his niece, in the way her eyes turned that gem-hard ruby, in how she carried herself and how she practiced without need for companionship. Now, though, they needed her to gain the trust of her fellow clan-mates and understand how Inferni worked as a team. It was a peculiar team, with different languages in different times, and from one face to another, but they understood each other still. Halo was still a child—she was still learning what she needed in order to flourish here. “You should be able to close your hand around it,” he answered, unwilling to give her anything scientific. Anselm might have, with all of his jargon and measurements and books, but Gabriel subscribed to a much simpler view. “Find that and we’ll work from there. And don’t worry,” he added, letting the cold demeanor shift to a small smile. “I lost mine in the fire over the mountain, so I’ve gotta find one too.”
