Though Phoenix was normally a good-natured wolf, there was one wolf he actually did not like: deuce, the crazy female from Syemv. He didn’t trust her, since either she was insane or an incredible huge flake. Both times he’d run into her had felt like glimpses into a world of insanity. And the thought that she had actually had a child… it was scary. Phoenix expected the daughter to be just like her mother, and as she took him by surprise and knocked him over, calling him “daddy,” it looked like he was right. Yet, when she began to weep once learning that he was not indeed her father his heart ached for the unfortunate little girl. He could easy sympathize with such feelings. As she shed tears into his fur he attempted to comfort her, which only led to a stand-off between mother and daughter (with him in the middle) as Deirdre tried to go home with him. Finally Phoenix convinced her that would not be happening, and he told the little girl to reconcile with her mother. As soon as he was free to, Phoenix made a hasty escape and didn’t look back. Little did he know that he would soon come to think of that little girl as his daughter anyway, and she would the oldest of his large brood, both adopted and biological.

The massive young male couldn’t believe it. Ever since his psychic abilities emerged he’d lived in fear of being a freak with nobody to understand him. Yet, as he stood before a young coyote (of all creatures), he found he was not so alone as he thought. She could only feel emotions while he could fully read minds but it was still basically the same thing. They were both cursed with an extra sense that they did not want. Faolin provided him hope and relief, even though they still had no idea how or why they could do what they did. Suddenly Phoenix didn’t feel like such a freak. If there were others out there like them, perhaps there was yet a chance that he could understand and control his abilities. By the time they were done touching minds and comparing abilities the sun was beginning to set, and the coyote was reluctant to venture home in the dark. So the two freaks of nature spent that night together in the Haunted Forest, and in the morning vowed to help each other learn about their abilities.

The air was as thick as the earth they were moving. Whatever control Phoenix had managed to muster over himself was lost as soon as the last part of her body was hidden by the earth, and he broke down in sorrow once again. All the months he’d tried to be strong and act professionally in front of his pack mates were shot to hell, but he didn’t care. Gibraltar and Skoll, too, seemed absorbed in sadness, but he felt too fearful to approach them, nor did he really want to. Ember had been the closest thing he had to family, and now he had lost her too. If only he hadn’t taken her for granted, had been more affectionate towards her and gone to visit her more often. Now it was too late—he would never see her, hear her sweat voice or savor her scent ever again. She was gone. The world felt dark and empty, and he was alone in the world all over again.
