A Whale of a Tale
#21
Aislinn stopped her splashing and gingerly sat down in the cool water, using the coming waves to refresh her now tired tail muscles. She sat carefully, for her back leg was still a little tender even though it had been weeks since she had hurt it. She closed her eyes for a second, taking in the coolness of the waves, before opening them quickly when Reverent replied to her. Aislinn heard the apparent sadness in the female's voice and watched her closely as she seemed her mind seemed to wander; it was as if she was remembering something bad in her past, a feeling Aislinn knew too well. Despite her curiosity, Aislinn decided not to dig any further. Instead, she laughed a little, "It must be so much easier to hunt, too!" She looked down, watching the water froth between her paws, "Why don't you rest for a bit? You're working very hard, but the others have gone for buckets."

He ish a dork.

He wanted to do whatever he could to help the whale, of course, but for now that meant keeping out of the way. Bris wouldn't have told him to get Nayru out of the way if it wasn't dangerous or if they would be of no use--he was still very young, and pretty small...he couldn't do much of anything. Giddy looked at the shell that she offered him and picked it up in his teeth. It was a keeper! He'd have to give it to Bris to take home.

Gideon stared at the wolves splashing the whale with water. That sure looked like fun...he looked back at Nayru, then to the whale again. If they couldn't help, maybe there was still something that they could do. Cheer!! He jumped up and down in the sand, spitting the shell out in front of him. "Go pack go! Go pack go!" He yelled.

James, your post made me lol XD

The pair found what they were looking for. Heavily armed with empty beholders, Conor and the powerplayed Bris returned to the beach and the group of Dahlia’s willing individuals. The young Alpha was not aware of how much time had passed, but there was still life in the whale and the adult members that had remained on the beach were effectively helping out where they could. Oh yes, Conor’s ears caught Gideon’s yelling with ease and it was all he could do not to explode with a hearty laughter. While the boy still feared him because of the intimidating leader title, the man genuinely liked the young boy. When he dared to be himself he was absolutely a charming individual. Nayru had also found a friend in the younger puppy, and it was wonderful to witness. The black and white girl had never seemed able to bond much with Mew’s litter, so it was good to see her smile and get along with the Stormbringer child.

”Here are buckets for those of you who can shift,” the golden hued male announced as he dropped the burden down into the soft sand. ”You’re doing great,” he commented as he picked up a bucket, looking to Aislinn and Reverent with a brilliant smile. He then moved over to the salty water and returned with the full bucket, splashing the cold liquid on the drier areas where the wolves’ soaked tails couldn’t reach.

Hey, sorry 'bout my rather long absence. I'm back now. Smile

Gazing silently at the dying whale with sad eyes, Glaiven noted the arrival of several newcomers, including a small black and white pup with glowing red eyes; a very young male with black fur who talked in the innocent voice of a toddler; a silver sheened female wolf colored somewhat like herself only with a slight tint of blue; and a dark coated female who for some reason seemed to carry a burden, not of the physical type but of the emotional one. She cocked an ear backwards to listen to the suggestions they threw out. All were very practical and helpful, but would they get the whale back into the sea in time? They would have to find out.

As the two pups went off to search for seashells, Glaiven heard the dark female introducing herself to the one called Aislinn as Reverent. Suddenly, she recognized how aloof and distant she was being, and said, "I'm sorry, I forgot to give you guys my name. I'm Glaiven. I just became a Dahlian recently," followed by a warm smile. She joined the other two females in their efforts to keep the whale wet.

ooc talk:James, I laughed so hard when I saw your post hehe & Glaiven's back! *gasp* :O Yayz Smile haha

Reverent had heard Aislinn offer that she should rest but she shook her head and decided that it was best to keep splashing the whale to distract herself and also to help the whale. As she had continued to cup her hands together to splash the whale with the salty water. When she had heard a small voice shouting. She turned her black head and ears twoard the voice and saw a little wolf shouting. She couldn't help but laugh to herself and sit down smiling.

A short while after she heard Conor walking back her sky blue eyes turned to where he had came, bareing buckets. He sat them down and told them what a great job they were doing as he smiled and grabbed a bucket to splash the whale on the head. Reverent stood up and grabbed a bucket as well following Conor splash the whale.

The wolf that she had seen earlier had produced a name, Glaiven. Glaiven had then came over and helped in keeping the whale wet. Reverent was proud in calling this pack her new family. Reverent turned to Glaiven and decided to talk to her "Hello Glaiven," she smiled at the golden amber eyed wolf, "My name's Reverent. I'm new to Dahlia de Mai too. It's nice to meet you." She loved meeting new wolves. She had met many new one's in Dahlia.

Nayru stood still as Gideon exploded into cheers, her eyes fastened upon the laboring animal. Although she did not feel like the were losing the beast, she found she didn’t have the will or want to join into Gideon’s burst of encouragement. Although she could and would make barks of exclamation that rose about a loud whisper, she never raised her voice to such pitches and it didn’t even seem a possibility now. Only when she saw Conor and Bris returning with the buckets did she stir to life again, catching Gideon’s eyes before she headed back towards the group, unwilling to stand apart from them too long. "C’mon Gideon, I want to help." Her soft voice floated back over her shoulder as she marched toward the whale.

They had been gone some time, but upon their arrival the dry spots of the whale’s thick skin were promptly wetted and Nayru could see that they hadn’t taken too long. To Nayru’s delight she could also see that the tide was turning and rising once again. The little girl knew that a high tide occurred twice daily and that whale had probably beached himself during the last one. By the time the tide was once again at it’s highest and ready from them to help push the whale back out to sea twelve hours or so would have passed, and Nayru wondered how the whale could stand it. Thankfully that time was more than half over, and by nightfall this would all be but a bad memory for the sea creature.

With the others hard at work Nayru took the opportunity to wade into the water, letting the lapping waves wash over her, soaking her body completely in the salty brine. Once drenched the water logged child came up to the side of the whale and rubbed her dripping body along its blubbery body. Looking over her work, Nayru was satisfied to see that this too was an effective way to wet the whale. Glancing hesitantly towards Bris and Conor to see if either of them had noticed her contribution and if they objected, she turned to the water for a second drenching. Perhaps Gideon was too short and small to be so close to the whale, but Nayru wasn’t. She just couldn’t stand by waiting while the others worked, and she didn’t intend to any longer.

I love this thread idea so much. XD

No words were exchanged between Bris and Conor as they made the trek to retrieve the buckets. The silence between them was calm and easy, and not at all awkward. The white woman shadowed the tawny alpha as they headed back to the scene, and her face lit up in a delighted grin as she heard Gideon's cheers echoing across the sand. An affectionate laugh escaped her lips as she brought the buckets over, her eyes sparkling merrily as she winked over at her nephew.

It warmed the woman's heart to see the Dahlian's trying so hard to help the whale. Each one was doing whatever they possibly could to help, and Bris made it a conscious point to remember each and every name she'd overheard today. Glaiven, Reverent, and Aislinn were all new faces to her, though she'd caught whiffs of their unique scents around the packlands over the past couple of weeks. As she tended to her bucket duty, ritually walking back and forth from the sea to the whale and pouring the soothing water over its skin, she exchanged grateful, encouraging glances with her fellow packmates.

At one point, she caught the form of Nayru out of the corner of her eye, and she paused a moment to take stock of what she was doing. It would seem the older of the two present Dahlian children couldn't force herself to stand idly by, and the corner of Bris' lip turned up in a knowing half-smile as she watched her. The woman caught the young girl's stealthy glance, and she took the time to nod at her and smile in approval. The girl had no doubt caught on to the fact that Bris had told Giddy to watch her only to keep him out of trouble, and that the truth of the situation was actually reversed. Nayru was a bit older than Gideon, and Bris trusted her to be less careless than the young boy. For now, the black pup was occupied with cheering the Dahlian rescue team on, and though the work was tiring, the smile never once left Bris' calm face as she contributed to the effort. If the group of wolves could just keep this up for a few more hours, the whale would have a decent fighting chance to return to the sea.

ooc talk:Sorry it's kinda short. :\

As Reverent had continued splashing the whale along with many other wolves from Dahlia a little pup drenched herself and was helping in soaking the animal too. Reverent smiled loving how she had made new friends in Dahlia. She felt the wind start to pick up more and she had noticed that the water had gotten a little higher than before. She stopped and looked out twoard the open water and saw storm clouds. That does not look well.. Reverent walked over to where she saw Conor. She looked back at the storm and then to Conor again and lowered her ears. "Um.. excuse me Conor. I think that the tide has risen some and that there's a terrible storm coming.." Reverent couldn't help but look at the clouds that edged closer and closer to the beach front that they were on. The black female's hands fell a little slack as she continued to watch the clouds that edged closer as she had stood near the Alpha male Conor.

Aislinn turned her head to face the young pup that was cheering the whale washers on and she giggled at his enthusiasm; enjoying the warm feeling that came from being part of such a wonderful pack. She stood once more and moved over to the whale as she begun to splash it once more. Halfway through splashing, she heard Reverent mention a storm. She looked up and the ominous clouds in the distance were plain to see and there was no doubt that the tide had risen considerably. Aislinn didn't let this stop her, however, and she continued drenching the whale with vigour. She took the time to have a little look at some of the other wolves that had gathered, some of them she recognised and some that she had never seen before.

He grew tired of cheering for the pack after a little while and continued his previous quest, seashell searching. Gideon had a rather impressive pile going by the time the clouds began to roll in over the horizon. He could see that the water was starting to come up around the whale, too--it seemed to come back to life little by little, flapping its water-wings (he saw it as a sort of a bird, but one who didn't float in the air, but in the water) and its tail a little bit. The wolves would have to be careful not to get hit by it! "Watch out for its wings!" He shouted over the sounds of the whale and splashing water.

He felt a drop of water hit his nose and looked up toward the heavens. Goodness! It was starting to rain! Lightning cracked across the sky and his eyes grew wide. Would they be safe out here on the beach? The rain would keep the whale wet, right? He ran around to the other side of the beast. "It's rainin' Aunt Bris!"

Powerplay to get an end to the thread before it got too outdated! Big Grin AWESOME posting, guys! Remember, if you're counting points for the Dahlia game, starting/participating in a pack thread gives a few extra points ;P

The salt water slowly, yet steadily climbed up around the great being. The young Alpha could feel the whale’s exhaustion wearing on, but there were such things as happy endings. This was a honorable move, and as lavender irises slowly flickered across the scene, he was pleased to see how new members mingled in with old, getting to know each other while trying to save the majestic mammal’s life. Reverent appeared by his side and his focus turned to her dark face as she spoke. His ears turned back toward his caramel coloured skull and his lilac gaze fled to look to the sky. It was true that a wind had started to pick up and the building army of dark clouds was heading their way.

Drops started to fall from the crowded sky soon after, and the male gave a court nod to Reverent before starting to move up to the whale’s front. Tide would not get higher than this. ”All right, let’s get our friend back into the water,” he announced, gathering the pack where he was positioned. The large creature seemed to understand what was about to happen, and wriggled tiredly as the Dahlians pushed. Slowly, very slowly, the large body was pushed deeper into water. When the storm fully reached the wolves, whipping the sea, the whale was no longer stranded and doomed to die from its own body weight slowly suffocating it.

A deep, vibrating sound seemed to erupt from the great being as it moved out deeper on its own; again a king of the seas. A final whip of its great tail and then it disappeared, diving into the salty sea and travelling away to wherever home was.
