YOU MIGHT NOT FEEL IT NOW

Her head felt heavy and weighed upon her neck, her shoulders tense, her feet blistered, her lower back sore. This had been one hell of a hangover and insomnia spell to conquer for several days now. Still, she couldn't find the means to sleep, wouldn't find the means to sleep until her head rested in a place that she could rest soundly. There was only one place to obtain such a thing, and even now, wasn't sure if this place would be open with welcomed paws and arms to accept her back. She knew that the reigns were slowly slipping from her grasp, slipping from her mentality and her sanity. This was a desperate measure of hers, a desperate action for a last resort. As much as she liked to run, there was no path out there that would bring her to where she wanted to be. Not even the path that was bringing her back to the place that was merely a shot of a true home seemed all that promising.

Yet, there was a glint of what looked like some flicker of distant hope in her crimson eyes. The scent of Gabriel's markings along the territory boundaries made her flesh crawl, every hair stand on end, and brought reminiscing memories of when she was young, innocent, untainted. Ah, those were the days, and she would give anything to have a taste of them again. Talitha felt enlivened to see Gabriel once again, but was also apprehensive of what he would say when his eyes would draw upon his daughter again in actuality before him. She abandoned him before, several times actually, and how much longer would he put up with her disappearing acts, if he was still willing to? Hell, Talitha didn't even want to think of Ezekiel's reaction to this all neither.

Like said before, this was all a movement of desperation for herself. Selfish? Absolutely. Life out in the open was too stressful, too vulnerable. The Lykoi was not a weak girl in survival by any means, but... tarnished so to speak, even exhausted from the mental torment she suffered in her solitude while gone. Lingering at the extremity of Inferni in the early hours of the morning (which bode even more fatigue for her to sleep), Talitha was in her Lupus form, her figure more than lax of itself. Everything about her seemed worn down, from her neck and shoulders to her limp tail, all except her ears which naturally stood tall and alert, but overall she seemed ragged. Not a good first impression in the least, but it wasn't like Talitha to put up a front with anything, either.

Sorry for the delay!
It had been nearly two weeks.
Gabriel no longer woke to night-terrors, and was healing slowly. His body ached still. Yet the monster had fallen, and with him an era. The Aquila was pleased that it was done. He was lucky. This place was lucky. His own mother had been wounded days before the beast had come to him, and Gabriel did not doubt that Haku sought to kill her to enrage him. Though he would never admit it, Gabriel understood Haku far too well.
They were, after all, the same.
Returning on a patrol (for Gabriel often patrolled at night, either alone or with Hybrid), the Aquila broke into a run. He had not been able to run far with his wounds, and found that this was again the case. After perhaps a quarter of a mile his body had refused to continue. Aching, furious, the coy-wolf’s face had twisted into a grimace and he had to take several long minutes to quiet the pain. By the time it had subsided the field was lightening..and with this light, he spotted a figure in the distance. It was small, but dark. Picking up his pace to a slow trot Gabriel neared the stranger, balking as the scent finally hit him. “Talitha?” He called out, drawing ever closer.

YOU MIGHT NOT FEEL IT NOW

There was an urge to collapse then and there, her exhausted paws sensing the borders and knowing this was the place she was destined to rest and rejuvenate herself. That wasn't an entire certainty yet, though. Gabriel had always been a doting father to her, no matter how many times she tended to screw things up and run off into oblivion without looking back or even giving any notion of goodbye or see you later. Gabriel deserved a goddamned medal for it, no less that he didn't deserve to put up with her untamed adolescent ways. Talitha screwed up once again, no surprise in that. If Gabriel decided not to accept her back into Inferni, Talitha didn't think it would be anything to weep over, because that was what she deserved in the first place. Stupid, stupid girl, putting the one individual that matters through hell worrying about you, and just think, Ezekiel is probably off worse than daddy dearest... her conscious would mutter, tsk-tsking her in the back of her mind.

From her tattered self seemed to breathe in sudden life once from the shadows and like a swift angel of death Gabriel de le Poer himself approached. Everything about her, from her narrow muzzle to her unusually large ears, perked up. Seemingly her crimson eyes glazed over her father's scarred visage, and couldn't help but swell with guilt and emotion. Hearing her name muttered, one ear flicked, and her legs trembled. "Dad," Her voice was a murmur, but affection was evident. "It's really me. I've came back to you... again." The last part sounded pathetic, but was genuinely said enough. Seeking out the familiar scars and the handsome structure of Gabriel, there was something about him that didn't seem right. Maybe it was the connection that she held with her father that was strong even after all this time, or maybe whatever was wrong, it was just very apparent on his face. "Dad, are... are you alright?" Talitha said, searching his eyes, his face, everything about him. Something felt a little off center to her, but didn't know exactly what was wrong.

Sorry for the delay!
As he neared, things became apparently. She was thin. Her body looked ragged, as if it had been worn down by her travels. The girl was not the same daughter he remembered. Yet her voice was as he recalled it and his face broke into a broad smile that turned him years younger. Without hesitation he moved forward and embraced her in an awkward doggish hug, rubbing his face against her as it to try and prove to himself she was real. After all the family he had lost, he needed to be reassured.

The scent of her was distinct because his own scent was in it. She was his daughter and always would be. “Shhh,” he said quietly, his normally gruff voice softening (as it only did for her). “I’m fine, Tal, I’m fine. Got a few more scars, but I’m fine.” The bare places on his face still ached, but it was a small price to pay for what could have been. Gabriel was certain Haku would have killed him (or that he almost had), but he did not need to share such details with his daughter just yet. “You’re always going to be welcome here, don’t forget that.”

Then he drew back, tail wagging behind him. “You look tired. How about you spend the night with me? I’ll try and round up some food for you too.” He was speaking quickly, doing his best to dissuade her from questioning anything else. She did not need to return to the horrors Inferni had seen since her departure. Not after everything she had been through.

Gabriel had aged, as everyone was destined to grow older. Seemed like everyone and everything materialistic eventually shifted and changed, but one thing that did not change was her father's warmhearted, affectionate smile. Gods, what she would do in order to see that smile and feel Gabriel's warm embrace upon her again, no matter how tattered he was. Everything about him, from the way that he walked, spoke, smelled, was true home. It was easy for Talitha to fall right into that graceless sort of half hug, have nuzzle canines did. Awkward or not, it did the trick for her to make her feel, for once, that everything was going to be alright in the world. It stirred about such inner emotions of fondness and tenderness the hybrid forgot she even had; they were all suppressed beneath her greater, darker emotions that was kept at bay by her inner critic. This isn't going to last long, it would speak from the darkest confines of her mind, Eventually you'll do something in order to test his disappointment with you. Shaking her head in order to push that pesky voice away from her train of thought, Gabriel assured her that he was fine. There was a small smile that crept on her muzzle. "Yeah, you're always fine. What was I thinking? You're still the leader of Inferni and all, of course you'll be fine." Talitha gave a playful roll of her eyes. How silly she was.

Her crimson eyes glossed over then with Gabriel's next words, holding back the urge to shed tears. With her father's soothing words that were no match for a mother's own reassuring ones, Gabriel encouraged that this would always be Talitha's place, no matter what happened. As much as she knew Gabriel would always welcome her into his heart and home, it was her inner critic that said otherwise. For all the things that happened before, Talitha didn't feel like those words held true to herself. She didn't feel that, no matter how much Gabriel felt like true home, that Inferni itself was rightfully a true home. Home is something you earn or have kept, neither of which you've done, her darker conscious would whisper, What makes them think you wouldn't betray them once again? You've done it countless times before, might as well have them make a special rank for runaways. She didn't feel like she held capability in order to rise through the ranks like she used to, but then again, maybe it was because now she was tattered, exhausted, and most vulnerable to her darker musings. That voice got annoying, but it couldn't go away, no matter how hard she tried to ignore it.

As soon as Gabriel mentioned food, her stomach jumped at the opportunity to make itself vocal and lightly rumble. Food did sound very good, maybe even a little bit more than finding a place to rest. Her energy was sapped and spent, and judging by the way Gabriel was moving things along, there was no room for her to question anything else, despite how Talitha was very interested in everything that happened with Gabriel while she was gone. "That sounds amazing right now, dad. I'd love to." Talitha replied, and stepped back some in order to have him lead the way to their destination for food and rest.

There was no denying that age was encroaching on Gabriel. He was now five years old, having outlived both his father and grandfather. It was lucky, perhaps, he was half Lykoi. Without his mother’s stubborn survivalist blood in him he would have perhaps fallen as the other heads of the de le Poer house had. Granted, of course, Gabriel did not lead this house—that right belonged to a woman he had never met, and to a side of the family he would never know.
Despite the age that threatened to creep in (he had not yet begun to gray) the warrior felt young again with his daughter at his side. He laughed aloud as her stomach answered for her, a deep thing that turned his body alive again. Picking up a quick trot, he began to lead her back to the second place she had ever called home (the first having long since been destroyed by his own hand). “Well I’ll see what I can find. How about you head up to the cave and get comfortable. With any luck you won’t run into your grandma,” he added, snickering. “She’d probably baby you to death if she got a hold of you.” At a place where the worn dirt trail forked, Gabriel nodded her onward and upward, and turned himself east. The aches and pains of battle were forgotten as he bounded off into the tall grass, intent on finding a decent meal.

Talitha assumed that behind Gabriel's warm smile, she could only imagine the silent thoughts that weren't spoken in regard to herself. While Talitha was her own worst critic, what came in a very close second was Gabriel's opinion of her. This is most likely all an act, just to butter you up for what's to come later. You'll see, honey, which is what her negative conscious would say. It carried a just as dark appearance as her molester did, and if Talitha closed her eyes hard enough, she could almost picture that conscious in her mind as a shadow with dull, gleaming golden eyes. It gave her instant chills, made her guard hairs stand on end, and it made her want to run to the nearest stream to try and wash her fur right off from feeling soiled and dirty (no less a shot or two also seemed to be quite fitting, too).

It wouldn't be proper to instantly break out her flask and take a shaky, eager swig of it in front of Gabriel (for she looked like a mess as it was and didn't want her father to probe into what was going on), so attempting to shake off her esteem killing thoughts, Talitha flashed a smile of gratitude as Gabriel gestured up to the cave where he was staying, and also dashed off in search for food. Talitha would of course follow him for a short while before taking the short cut that bee lined up to the cave, but before she was to disappear entirely and finally catch up with rest, Talitha still reserved strength for her grandmother? "My grandmother?" Talitha questioned aloud, turning her head to the side in confusion. "Which grandmother is it, and from what side?" Family always interested her. There were so many relations to be found in Inferni and throughout the continent itself that she was bound to run into a cousin here and there soon. It had also been too long since she was really in the presence of any true blood bound family as well, anyway.

Though his daughter’s voice called after him on the wind, but the Aquila had a task at hand. Every ache in his body magnified tenfold as he left her side. The bad shoulder, the left one, nearly gave out once he had passed beyond her field of vision. Haku had nearly destroyed him. More had aided him in the years before: a black wolf with dark eyes, a golden wolf larger than life, and all those who had come before, during, and after them. Those two were given the most credit. The first had cut his face open, and the second had nearly wretched his arm from its socket. Yet even around his daughter (no, especially around his daughter) Gabriel could not show his pain or his weakness. It was a ruthless, wolf-like need that demanded such a thing.
Gabriel did not need to go far to find food. Inferni’s vast plains were close enough to the caves to serve as suitable hunting ground. Though he had come to prefer the northern forest, there was no time. Instead he chased after large, fat hares, though only two were caught. This number was far from what he had once been capable of. Still, they would do well enough. Carrying the beasts back in his mouth he made his way up to the slope of his den, a simple thing made out of earth that had likely formed out of the elements and been aided along the way.
There were only a few simple spaces within, a main hallway that led to a large family den, a smaller offshoot for supplies, and a third “guest” area that had served several functions in its time. It was the central area he came to, where a small hearth had been made out of stones. It was close enough to suck the smoke out of the entrance, but just deep enough in to warm the space in the winter. “Sorry about that wait,” he apologized, dropping the hares to the ground.
“If you don’t mind waiting longer I can try and cook them.”
Unlike his father, Gabriel was hardly a master chef—cooking for him entailed essentially charring everything and leaving the insides raw.

With her question going unanswered as Gabriel dashed off to retrieve a meal, the hybrid was left wondering about the grandmother her father spoke of, and any other traces of relatives, cousins, maybe even some siblings she wasn't aware of that lingered in Inferni's borders. Memories from her early childhood brought the bittersweet reveries of fleeting moments spent with her mother, brother, grandparents, and other individuals that helped her along the way after her incident with her uncle occurred. There were fragments from her past that she missed, especially the ones concentrated around her more innocent, carefree self, everything before the traumatic experience occurred. He ruined every single element of her, and there hadn't been a way to get over the vicious cycle of attempting to forgive and forget. How the hell would anyone want to forgive that bastard for what was done? Talithat had a long, long way to go before her life would ever be considered returning back to normal, if it ever would.

Her travel worn paws were against her moving in a loping stride yet again toward the direction of Gabriel's den, but Talitha promised her mind and spirit that it was only a couple yards to go before her paws and her body could finally claim rest and sleep a long, dreamless slumber. The exhaustion was burning in her muscles, attempting to make them as heavy as weights and attempting to slow her down in a halt, but Talitha pressed onward as fast as she could go before the relief of her father's den was in sight. Even though it was nothing that looked fancy and a place that was fit for a true Aquila like her father, it was homely, cozy, secluded. Talitha wasted no time shuffling herself in the den, making a couple circles over a chosen spot of rest before finally easing down upon her stomach, dropping her head to cradle in her forepaws. Ah, rest. It was heaven sent in this moment.

Whether it would take Gabriel an entire span of the day to retrieve prey, Talitha wouldn't mind for the wait in the least. When Gabriel returned with two lush hares, the hybrid's crimson eyes were already fluttering heavily asleep. Her unusually large ears perked up, and instantly her saliva glands began watering at the sight and scent of the hares. Talitha shook her head from side to side at his apology, brushing it off. "I would wait forever and a day, dad. I was trying to get some shut eye anyway, and the trip up here took longer on my weary paws then I thought. I'm thankful for whatever you bring back, at whatever pace." Talitha reassured Gabriel that there wasn't too much time spent in waiting, and that sensing her father already had a lot on his mind as it is as the Aquila, that it was sweet of her daddy to take the time out of his busy schedule to retrieve and make her something to eat. At Gabriel suggesting to cook the hares, her tongue flicked out to skim across her jaws. "If you'd like. I'm starving as it is, raw sounds absolutely amazing right now, though." It was her inner instinct that craved to sink her teeth into a supple hair, raw or not.

He was pleased to see she did not require the thing singed. Many canines in the area had become so humanized they forgot the pleasure of eating a meal while it was still warm from life. As soon as she had spoken he gave her the two hares, objecting as she lifted her eyes to argue that he should have one. It was apparent she was starving. Gabriel did not know where she had come from, and he did not believe that now was the time to ask. Both of his children were somewhat secretive, and he respected this. He respected all of Inferni’s right to privacy unless he saw it as a threat to his clan. Above all else, Gabriel was loyal to Inferni. This was why he had almost died for it.
Gabriel left her to eat in peace, taking a moment to go outside and scan the area. At his home, which was one of the higher points of the Waste, he was able to see a great deal of the territory. Despite this, he was not surprised that he did not see anyone. Inferni’s land was much larger than it had been, and most of the newer coyotes lived within the mansion. This worried Gabriel only slightly, for he recalled the damage done in the fire and dreaded what might happen if it be brought to the wooden building. “The borders have changed since you were here last,” he called back, rising to his feet. “We lost a lot of territory to a fire, but we now have a large area of the forest to the north. It’s nice up there, we don’t see wolves hardly at all. I’ll take you around…” His voice trailed off as he returned to the space. Two carcasses waited for him, and he was not surprised to see that Talitha had made her way into the large family room she had slept in as a child.
Smiling warmly, the Aquila lay next to her frail body, ignoring the doubt and the worry about her condition—even now, she was breathing quickly, as if she might lose the chance to. He slowed his own breaths and after several long minutes, her pace matched his own. Once he was certain she was in a deep sleep he left, carrying the carcasses out for the ravens. One of these, in particular, seemed thrilled to know that the girl had returned. The two beasts talked for a short time before Gabriel returned to his patrol, his step now a light, happy one. His daughter was home.
