Though it had been a victory worth rolling around joyously for, Ciel's discovery of a whole field of luscious, sweet berries (untouched, as the wolves had no interest in them, and their prey had been too fearful to dare a taste) was now simply a fond memory, as the field was now all but bare, and his poor stomach grumbled complaints at his attempt to ration what was left while he searched for more food. While the wolves were more active at night, he found that wandering around in the oppressive heat was more taxing on his energy than it was to attempt a night time search, and so he'd enjoyed a nice nap in his cave before bounding off into the night to find a new source of food. He stopped in his tracks curiously when he caught the scent of human. It was very faded by years of absence, but his various encounters with human buildings as a cub made it impossible to mistake.

Temporarily distracted by the oddity of such a scent in a place like this, far from his birthplace, he followed after it with his nose to the ground, ignoring the intimidating scents of various wolves which would have usually caused him to turn tail and attempt another area not so heavily scented. As he continued, the scent became slightly stronger until a dark silhouette of a wooden structure could be seen standing alone just up ahead. Reminded of the joyful days of his childhood, he was spurred into an eager sprint across the field of flowers, romping like a cub in spring, his mouth opening slowly in excitement. Some of the best foods he'd ever tasted had been foraged from abandoned human dwellings. If he could find the little hard, cold rocks that the humans hid away, he could smash them open and lick himself a good meal, especially if it had beans and meat inside.

He slowed his romp as he approached the front of the dwelling, pausing to scent the air. The smell of the wolves were no stronger here than anywhere else, they had likely found the place, but had only browsed it lightly, unaware of the treasure inside of the cold rocks like he was. Raising a paw, he placed it against the plank of wood that was cut away from the others, and pushed on it, though it did not budge. With a grunt, he pushed harder, and it made a cracking sound, but stayed still. With a sigh, he moved around the house slowly until he found what he was looking for: The clear, cold stone that was see-through and easily breakable. Rising up on his hind legs, he broke through the stone with both paws, then pulled his large bulk through the opening carefully, though not without much difficulty, as he was very large, and he doubted that whatever purpose the placing of the stone in the wall was, that it was not meant to serve as an entrance to a bear.

The dwelling was much smaller than most, and he found that he filled up a good portion of it simply by entering. Not one to be discouraged so easily, he began nosing around the place and pawing at things that might seek to cover what he was looking for. He found nothing, though, and squeezed himself into another section of the place, this one lined with miniature wooden dwellings, not designed to live, but to hold things. At seeing this, he was excited, as he remembered a time he found a few full of the little cold rocks, and he, his brother, and his mother had enough food for 3 days! It was an easy thing to push the little wooden covers open, but not an easy thing to experience disappointment at their emptiness. It would seem that wherever the humans escaped to, they took their little rocks with them.

He halfheartedly opened the last one, and was met with a little angry creature, which held no scent other than humans and the same scent as the cold rocks that usually held food. It stiffly moved towards him (or was it simply just moving forwards out of the wooden container?), and all confusion on whether it was friend or foe was cleared as it lifted its clicky tail and barked up at him tinily, sounding all the world like wolf. Instinctively, he backed away into the part of the building that he'd initially entered, and the creature began shining lights at him from its face and followed stiffly. He continued backing up until he bumped into something hard and cold, and suddenly there was a deafening cacophony of noise behind him. He quickly whirled to face this new foe, and rose up on his hind legs, but when this did nothing to quiet the assailant, he swiped a deadly paw, which sent the thing hurtling until it hit the wooden wall and lay dead.

His first foe was still advancing, however, and still barking. Turning to face it, he took in a breath, and roared in response to its challenge, informing it of how foolish it was for challenging him. He regretted this almost immediately, however, as he caught the sound of many padded feet heading in his direction. The wolves had already attempted to rid themselves of him before, unkind to another predator in their territory, and now they were through warning him to leave. Quickly, he squeezed through the hole he'd made, and spotted 9 lithe forms racing in his direction. With a distressed cry, he turned away from the forms and made his way to the trees, barreling towards them as fast as he could. He gave a yelp of pain as teeth sunk into his leg in an attempt to slow him, but he continued, even as he felt the rest close in on him.

At last, he hit the treeline, and with the ease of 2 years of climbing his taught him, made his way up the first tree he spotted with a thick enough trunk to support his weight. The wolves jumped up after him, snarling dangerously, and he gave them a forlorn plea for mercy in the form of a moan that they chose to ignore, seeming to think that one warning was enough to permit them to carry out his death. He continued to climb up until he reached a thick branch, and allowed some of his weight to rest on it, while he leaned the rest on the trunk. Eventually, the wolves would get tired or bored, and then, he would find a new place to live.
