The sun was setting. The puppy's deep blue eyes were transfixed by the swirling color to the West, where the sun sat low against the horizon. He cocked his head to one side as he watched, wondering where the bright yellow orb went when it was not lighting the sky above his world. He lay among a small clump of bushes nestled deep within the apple orchard, one of his favorite places. In the sun's waning orange light, the leaves were bright green and yellowing at the edges, the apples like red lights hanging merrily from their branches.

He was pushing the envelope, staying out so close to sundown. But he was unafraid, unthinking of the dangers that he'd been warned of. Whining softly, Oak rose to his oversize paws, racing with soft thuds of the grass to an oddly-shaped tree. The branches twisted from low on the trunk, just begging him to climb them. With a mischievous smile, the red-furred boy scratched at the lowest branch, getting a feel for the hard wood. Next he hefted both front limbs over the branch and attempted to haul himself upon it.

At first he succeeded only in hanging like a rag over the treelimb, its hard line squashing his rolly-polly belly. Ouf! he groaned when swinging his hind legs only pushed him over the edge, landing him on his back. But he was not one to give up easily. He got right up again and inspected another low hanging branch. It was wider and flatter than the skinny snake of his previous attempt. This time, Oak used all the power in his small body to heave first his front paws, then one of his hinds, over the side of the branch. He carefully folded one paw over the other lay in a sphinx like position, one hind leg on either side. A gleeful smile brightened his features.

He had forgotten about the sun and instead thought of his brothers, wanting them there to see his accomplishment (even though he hadn't exactly climbed the tree).

The little boy yawned. It was an open mouthed wide jaws straining yawn that spoke of the late hour. He had stayed close to mother all day long, just as he saw fit. Together they had walked through the small valley, looked at flowers and she talked about how they were planted and how the Sun told them it was okay to grow tall and green. He was like their mother, giving what they needed and showing them how to behave. All their faces pointed towards him, just as Alder watched mother so vigilantly.

But there was always a point where she would need to leave him. She told him to go play, to find his brothers and venture out into the grounds of the pack lands and frolic, which with her explanation meant having fun. But the masked boy had fun with her, to which she told him that he could have fun with them as well.

So the tawny black accented boy started out with his bum seated on the porch, right where he always took his seat, and looked out into the diminishing day. The room was void of tree-pups, for he had already searched it for them, and so they were out there somewhere. Black nose scented the air, his brothers a well practiced memory in his small puppy vault of a mind.

Taking the steps very carefully the large pup let his nose tell him where they had gone off to. He hesitated when entering the orchard, looking back at the Manor and wondering if it was safe to be so far away. He took a step, and then retreated. Another step, and then another. But the little wolf turned his tail and scampered back to the edge. Nothing had happened, so what was he so afraid of? Alder walked quietly and with his head low and nose to the ground through the grasses and under the limbs of the fruit trees.

The scent of Oak was everywhere, thick in the air just like it was when he was sitting right next to him. But, blue eyes scanning over the dropped apples and through the dandelions. But where was he?

;-; please dont hate me for being so slow getting to this <3

There was so much to explore beyond the confines of the manor and each day was anew adventure. Though Cypress's wanderings and explorations hadn't yet taken him far from the large house he called home. Today he had wanted to see what was on the other side of the orchard. He had only gone as far as the outer edge. . The dropping sun had gone unnoticed until the sky began to dim. The scents, sounds and sights of a world unexplored had distracted the growing mind. Only with the fading of daylight did the brown and black mottled pup realize that he was late getting back home to the safety of the manor. He knew momma might worry if he was stayed out any longer. He didn't wanna worry momma nor getting in trouble. Perhaps it was the scolding he feared more than the worry it might cause but either way he hurried quickly through the orchard.

It was impossible for Cypress to resist the urge to sniff at an odd fallen apple that had caught is attention or snapping at some bug that buzzed by. Then something larger caught his eye, it was Alder! Cypress sat down on his rump, watching his brother from a distance. Was he looking for something? It did look like he was looking for something. Though just as his larger sibling his was blind to Oak's presence in the tree. Cypress however could not pass up the opportunity to attempt to sneak up on his brother. Slinking from tree trunk to tree trunk, he crept closer and closer. His tail a constant fan behind him all the while. So focused on his masked brother Cypress had still not noticed Oak or even the scent of the presence. He close now. Almost close enough to pounce on the unsuspecting Alder, just a little further...

Oak was growing uncomfortable, his position slung over the tree causing him to shift his weight almost constantly. Much longer and he would have to abandon his plan to impress Alder and Cypress. Hopefully, he wouldn't have too; he'd become very excited about it, and it would hurt to have to cancel. As a last resort, the boy was about to yelp for them when the sound of small footsteps perked his ears atop his wine stained skull. The child caught his tongue and lowered his muzzle to the branch for secrecy, blue eyes scanning towards the Manor. There, approaching in his uncertain way, was his masked brother. Oak remained quiet and still, a task that was difficult for him but quite worth the effort. This was going to be fun.

He hung onto the hope that Cypress would appear as well, though he feared in a small way that this was unlikely. But today was a lucky day. From another direction came the scent of the smallest brother. Though completely thrilled, Oak did not move more than a few inches, and only to crane his neck to get a clue on Cypress' position. Both of his siblings were drawing near to his perch. An idea suddenly came to mind, better than the one before, and he smiled in smug excitement, hunkering low to he branch once again. He patiently waited to execute his plan, until both Alder and Cypress were deemed close enough. Only then did he suddenly drop down from his hiding place, landing between the others and screaming in his most frightening voice, BOO!, a grin blooming across his features. He landed on his side, rather than his feet, but he was unharmed. His eyes were wide and bright, awaiting his brothers' reactions.

yayyyy BROTHERS!

Alder snuffled along the ground, turning in a circle in the spot where he thought his brother had been. It was like he had disappeared, the trail ending there and seemingly not continuing everywhere. It was confusing and yet he still did not have enough sense to look up, even though the scent was so obviously above him. He gave a whine, sitting and looking at the spot in confusion. Had something taken Oak? Plucked him up in the middle of the orchard. Of course he didn’t notice his smaller dark brother coming up behind him, nor did he notice that the one he looked for was creeping from above.

Then, something moved behind him. The fur along his neck rose suddenly. Everything in his body made him jump up in fright, the voice scary and deep and something from bad bad dream. He couldn’t help but call out, a shriek that was as high pitched as his puppy voice could make. Alder scampered a few steps, his rump low on the ground and his tail between his legs. Blue eyes looked back, sensing the need to see if what ever it was chasing him.

It was not a monster that looked back at him but his two brothers. Alder stopped, sitting with his ears and head low. Embarrassment flooded his face and his cheeks grew warm. He didn’t know why others wanted to be scary or act that way. There was nothing fun about getting scared or having others think you were scary.

Whatever it was that Alder was looking for, it had kept him distracted enough from noticing the approach of his mottled brother as he crept up as a silently as a rolly pully pup with over sized paws could manage. At last! He was close enough that he felt he could reach his brother with just one might bound. Already low to ground, he tucked his haunches under himself, ready to propel his self forward and into the unsuspecting, but much larger pup. Rump wiggling as he awaited the perfect moment!

Just as Cypress was about to make his move to land a perfect pounce on his largest sibling something feel from the sky, landing between them with a frightful yell. In an attempt to jump back, Cypress found his front feet working far faster than his rear, which were tucked tightly under him. So, instead he went tumbling backwards, somersaulting in the truck of a tree. A sharp yelp, from the pure surprise of it all.

He had been a bit startled, but began to giggle as soon as he saw it was none other than "Oak!" On his feet in a flash, it was but a couple playful, bouncy bounds before he landed on top of his reddish brother. "Where you come from?" His brother had played a good trick indeed! Cypress looked up, trying to find where his brother had appeared from, all the while laying atop his sibling. "Up dar? How you get dar?" His tail drumming away behind him.

Oak lifted himself to his feet, tail thrumming ridiculously fast behind him, causing his entire body to tremble. He gazed after Alder, who seemed to be in the process of fleeing. His frightful cry started Oak's heart thumping against his thick chest. His masked brother had such displeasure written in his features that Oak felt deep guilt for his actions. He had not meant to scare Alder so much, only to play a silly game. The game was not worth upsetting him.

Meanwhile, Cypress had been disturbed from his own plot. Oak had witnessed him stalking up on Alder from the tree. As he lay there in the grass, panting happily, he spied Cypress bouncing towards them from the base of a tree a further distance away. The playful bounds spoke of mischief, fair warning to the reddish sapling that an attack was coming. Wide-eyed, he tried to pull some crazy moves by rolling swiftly away, but he was too slow. He felt the weight of his agouti brother upon him and grunted. As soon as Cypress lifted his wondering eyes to Oak's tree, the rusty furred boy saw his chance and batted a large paw at his brother's muzzle. I climbed up dere. Wanna see how? Oak wondered, leaning back to gaze at Alder from upside-down. Wanna try, Alder? I'll help you guys, he promised, his tail thumping against the grassy earth. He lifted his head again and unwound his paws from the tangle of his and Cypress's bodies, pushing them up against his captor's furry chest in an attempt to make him budge off.

Alder was certainly too easily frightened. His shriek came from his throat before he could manage to stop it, and he was humiliated because he had cried in fear like that. His blue eyes looked down at the ground, unable to yet venture up and see the faces of his brothers. There was no real laughter that he felt was directed towards him, but the masked pup would rather just look to the ground then see the smiling faces. Of course he would have been the apology in Oak’s eyes, but the boy did not blame his reddish brother more so then himself for being timid.

It wasn’t until the question came attached to his name that Alder looked up and saw that the two pups were one big lump of young wolf. He had the same blue eyes that looked back at him, and they now wandered upwards to the tree limb that hung off the trunk. No way, his little mind spoke with a instant reaction. No way. The pup wasn’t stuck in place, and stood to get a better look at the task that Oak had completed. He looked to Cypress, who had been asked the same thing. Joo wanna go first Cyp? He asked politely, he didn’t want to decline completely and so even more fear in front of the two.

His rust colored brother made a valiant attempt to escape his pounce, but Cypress still managed to land on top of his mark. Tail thumping away the whole time. His hurry to get back to manor was long forgotten by now. Oak's feat of dropping from the sky taking hold of the young boy's attention. With his nose tilted upwards as he tried to see the perch his brother had come from."HEY!"He had never saw the big paw striking towards his snout, a playful growl rumbling from his throat as he snapped after it in an irritated fashion with jaws full of sharp puppy teeth. Missing by inches, he acted annoyed with his brother but the grin on his face belied it all.

Cypress was impressed with Oaks little stunt and couldn't wait to try it for himself. It had been startling when he had suddenly appeared, spooking both Alder and Cypress in the process. Even if Cypress hadn't screeched like his more timid brother, he had still run away. He pouted a bit as Oak offered to help Alder up into the branch but brightened back up as soon as Alder offered for him to go first. "Yea, I wanna twy!" Finally getting up and off of Oak as he shoved into his chest. Though after a moment he felt a little guilty about taking Alder's turn."You sure you don't wanna go fiwst?" The mottled pup really wanted to give it a try though.

He was relinquished and rolled to stand on all fours, his tail continuing to wag merrily. Alder still seemed hesitant about climbing the tree, offering the first go to Cypress. Oak's eyes shifted from one brother to the other, patiently waiting for them to decide who should attempt tree-climbing first. He didn't mind waiting, as long as they both truly wished to climb the tree. It wasn't his desire to manhandle his siblings into doing something that they didn't like, especially not Alder. Spiders were Oak's biggest fear — they had such hideous faces, with their multitude of eyes and freakish fangs; he couldn't imagine being pressured to step into a swarm of them. Alder might feel this way about leaving the ground for the tree's branches, but Oak was having trouble gauging his masked brother's hesitance.

Shaking off the dirt that his coat had accumulated while he was on his back in the earth, he smiled, happy to wait until a decision was reached.

Alder was happy to shake his head. Watching the two pups rough house was enough to show him that their play was a bit too hands on for him. He was one that would rather just play pretend then pounce and chase and tackle. Ohh nu go aheads. he said to the smallest blue eyed by out of the trio. Alder even backed up a few paces so that Cypress could have all the room he needed in order to hop on up on the branch. The masked boy didn’t want anything to do with the tree, he realized the more that he thought and looked at the branch. It was too high for his big round body to hop up on anyways, and he was more of a four paws planted on the ground wolf anways.

Alder made it apparently clear that he wouldn't mind at all if Cypress went first. Making the mottled pup wonder if he was going to give it a try at all as he backed away. Cypress looked from his other brother to the branch and back, waiting for him to tell him how it got up there. His tail, as always, in constant motion. It seemed so much higher now that he was actually going to attempt to climb up on it and he couldn't help but feel slightly intimidated about what he was about to attempt. Hoping that he would it find that it was just beyond his reach.

Alder confirmed his acceptance of Cypress climbing first. He was looking up at the branches, studying them, but Oak remained unable to tell what he was thinking just from his expression. It was as if the dark band around his eyes was masked more than his face. The red-furred pup merely smiled and faced Cypress instead. His voice was gentle and patient as he went through his method of tower-scaling. Okays, just stand here... he began, moving to stand right at the base of the tower trunk. ...An jump real high. Get the branch wiff your claws! Oak demonstrated accordingly, this time mastering the task with his steady jump and sharp delving claws. He grinned down at his brothers, knowing that his explanation would serve both in case Alder decided he wanted to try too. With a thump, Oak was out of the tower and back on the earth, his white-tipped tail wagging as he stood by, prepared to give more pointers as needed.

The blue-eyed pups were all so different. Alder could not see if clearly but the way they were all built and their shades were something that could hardly be seen from their mother’s shining form. None of them were her light color, for Oak’s burnt red color was unknown to them all and the white the littered both Cypress as well as Alder was not to be found in the pelt of their dame. But they were her’s the blue eyes that each of them owned would never turn to a brown or green, not even the gold that the male that had sired them held. They were Anu completely, and though her son’s would carry the color of their father, Alder would someday understand how important their irises were and how rare it was for them to have.

He looked on, nervous as could be to watch his smallest brother try to climb the tower. Oak encouraged while he held the warnings that he wanted to shout.

Cypress watched closely as Oak show him how he had gotten into his perch above the ground. The rust pup made it look easy. Cypress stepped up to the very spot he had watched his brother make the jump from. Crouching down, haunches wiggling as he got ready for what he hoped was going to be his very best jump. Shuffling paws to make sure that they were planted just so. With a might oomph, He jumped, claws seeking to sink themselves in the tough, woody bark of the tower. He stretched and claws managed to just scrap the bark, leaving the pup to land with a soft thud as he returned to the earth.

Without missing a beat he climbed back up to his feet with a shake of his head. "Hawder dan it wooks," he said as he made his way back to the launch pad, this time stepping just a little closer to the branch. He followed the same steps as before, crouching down and taking aim. This time he was able to get a good hold on the log. However instead of climb on up he hung there. Grunting and squirming he tried to hoist his pudgy form on top of the limb. His best efforts getting only his head up and over while his back legs kicked looking for anything to grab hold of. Once he was satisfied that his grunting and groaning wasnt going to get him any further did ask for help. Ugh, Help! Maybe they could give him a push.

Oak found easy comfort in his family. Whatever happened, he always had his mother and brothers, interconnected in love. They were what made him the happiest. Spending the afternoon playing with Cypress and Alder was all he ever wanted to do. There was always much fun to be had, and rarely any worry to seep into their romps together. He spent his moments alone just longing for more playtime with his sapling siblings, feeling down and disappointed whenever he didn't get enough of it.

Alder was watching, his thoughts his own as the other two went about climbing the tree. When Cypress's first attempt was fruitless, landing him on the earth again, Oak smiled encouragingly and wagged his tail. It is hawd, he agreed, remembering his own moments of struggle. He was happy to see that his agouti brother wished to give t.ree-climbing another attempt. He was deeply amused solely by the grunts and groans Cypress admitted, but, not wanting to be mean, he kept his laughter at bay. Finally, the pup climbing the t.ree asked for help. Oak immediately came to Cypress's aid. He got right under his brother's hind paws, letting them rest on his burly shoulders, and shoved with all his might. He even pressed his front paws into the trunk for added force. You up dere?

tattle-tail!!!!

Oh no, he repeated in his head again and again. THis was far from fun for the rolly polly puppy and he knew that something needed to be done to stop this madness. His ears were plastered onto his head, his til tucked close to his rump as he sat on it and tried not to quake. Both of his brothers were being quite reckless in his eyes, and as the blue orbs blink and a heavy lump in his throat was swallowed Alder had decided what he needed to do. It would take bravery, defiance against the two other boys he called brothers and it would need speed.

His face turned, eyes looking back at the Manor, and the big pup spoke a few last words before getting to his paws. I'm gunna tell momma. She would know what to do. He fumbled to to his paws and got them to begin the long run back to the house.

Cypress could feel his sharp puppy nails sinking into the bark of the limb, but he just could not get his chest up and over it. The feeling of fur on his pawpads threatened to tickle the boy, but he knew that it was the help he needed. Hind feet finding purchase on the the shoulders of his rusted brother. With Oak helping to push him up the smaller boy finally made it up into the hold of the tree. "I made it! Danks Oak!" In the process he heard those words that he most feared from Alder. Blue eyes following the shrinking form of the fleeing Alder a moment before turning down to look Oak. "Do you dink momma will be mad?" His brow scrunched in worry. Not that any boys had seen anything akin to true anger from their tawny mother. For Cypress all it really took was a disappointed look from the woman to shatter his little world and send his ears falling back and tail tucking tight between his legs.

So worried about the fact that Alder was running off to fetch their mother, Cypress had hardly looked around. It wasn't till he had looked down at Oak that he had realized just how far off the ground he had managed to get. And while it was not really all that far, it was still intimidating to the young boy. He was quick to sink down to his belly and lay on the limb rather than trying to stand upon it. He wondered just how he was suppose to get down now. Momentarily forgetting he could simply jump back down to earth.

We close this now? Smile

Oak stood as still as he could for his brother, though after a moment his hind legs began to tremble under the other pup's weight. As soon as he felt the hind feet on his shoulders lift off, Oak crumbled to the frosty grass, falling upon his back. From there he gazed up at the branch, smiling when he saw that Cypress had made it. You're welcome! he returned happily. Just then, Alder's displeased voice came from behind, and Oak turned his head to look at him. His smile faded. They were having fun; why did Alder want to end it? His brow furrowed, ears falling. He didn't understand!

Awder, why...? but he was too late, Alder had turned and scrambled towards the Manor. Oak sighed and rolled over, getting to his feet. He was about to follow his masked brother when he remembered that Cypress was still in the tree. Oak looked up again, jerking his head after Alder. Yous jump down? We should go see what Awder says to Mama. I dink we will be in trouble, he spoke lowly, crestfallen. He already anticipated his mother's disapproving gaze, knowing that it would hurt his heart and fill him with shame. There was no avoiding it now, for Alder had disappeared into the distance.
