Light filtered softly into the windows of their room. The chill of the air was beginning to penetrate the house and the mates were snuggled close together in their bed. Haven was already awake, but he hadn't moved to get up and start his day yet. Idly his fingers tangled themselves in the curls of Princess' hair. Ever since the morning that Heath and Ruri's pups had been born, he hadn't been able to get the image of pups out of his head. They were the babes that belonged to his two good friends though, they were what he imagined his and Princess' children would look like.

When his mother had asked him those months ago about being a grandmother he had been embarrassed and felt he was far too young to be even thinking about having kids of his own. In such a short time, those thoughts had seemed to change. Maybe it was seeing those he was close to, and were much closer to his own age, start their families that made it feel more plausible. Whatever it was though, the Knight knew that that was what he wanted for him and Princess, he just didn't know if she wanted that too. They had never really talked about it and until now he hadn't known how to breach the topic. Now that their friend's pups were here though, and they had both witnessed it, he felt he had a good enough reason to open up the conversation.

Haven's arms carefully circled around his love's small waist and pulled her close, his nose burying itself in the tangle of her mane and breathing deep her scent. "Are you awake yet, love?" he asked as softly as his deep voice would allow. Part of him wanted to wake her up if she wasn't already, but he didn't want to be obnoxious about it. Even if he was incredibly anxious to talk to her about the possibility of them starting their own little family he was content to lay here and hold her. He doubted he would ever tire of that.

Brilliantly golden eyes fluttered open slowly at the sound of his voice, a contented sigh settling over her. Princess had been awake enough, curled into her mate's larger and warm body, but she had not roused herself enough to be considered fully awake until his voice reached her ears and he pulled her closer. His body was so comfortable, and she loved that he was still in bed beside her when she awoke; it was not often that this was the case. Princess stretched her arm over his chest, lifting her muzzle to gently lick his. "I am now, darling," she responded softly, her voice still holding the evidence of the sleep she had only just been drawn fully from. She'd had such sweet dreams, too, though they were not as nice as what she was able to wake up to.

"Did you sleep well?" she asked him, nuzzling her face into the crook of his shoulder and neck now. The young woman was so in love with the man she chose to spend the rest of her life with; Haven was everything that she could have hoped for and more. They were so perfect together, a picturesque couple living in a kingdom by the sea. Someday they would expand their family, she hoped, in the way that Ruri and Heath had just recently been able to experience the joy of. Princess was glad that she had been there to witness the birth of her friend's children, and she had to admit that Arnette and Forte were cute. She did not know if she would be brave enough to take on that responsibility now, though, given her upbringing and her lack of a good role model. Haven would be a wonderful father, when their time came, if he even wanted children fo their own. Really, it was terrible, but she did not know his thoughts on it. Princess really thought she should by now, though.

He could feel her stir as he pulled her closer to his larger form and his deep voice sounded in the quiet of their room. Bi-colored ears picked up the sigh that issued from her and it spoke of contentment. How had he ever been able to get a good night's sleep without her by his side? Maybe it had been easy when he hadn't known what he was missing, but he knew he could never be satisfied to be in a bed without her now. Her arm raising against his chest and her sweet kiss sent a small, delightful shiver down his spine. "Well then, good morning," he said still softly, returning the loving lick to her delicate muzzle. Even though he was usually an early riser, he loved the times that he stayed in bed longer to be with her. It was a special treat.

"Very well, yes. You, my love?" It was probably an unnecessary question from the sound of her voice, but it was nice to make sure nonetheless. A contented noise rumbled in the man's chest as she nuzzled against his neck. One hand moved up to gently stroke her hair and the back of her head, loving the feel of her tangled locks beneath his fingers. Haven let the blissful moment stretch on for a moment before carefully bringing up what he so desperately desired to talk about with her. "Princess, there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about," he prefaced. Taking a deep breath, he asked, "What do you think about...us starting a family?" Haven hoped that she wanted it as he did, but he couldn't be sure. How the couple had managed to avoid talking about it up until now was a mystery to him, but now he could barely think of anything else.

Nestled beside him in their bed, Princess could not imagine wanting to be anywhere else at that moment. Their relationship, though it began strangely, was something she loved and cherished. The Lady did not want anything else—only Haven and the life they were making. Despite their few rough patches, they were perfect for one another, in her eyes. "Good morning to you, as well," she murmured, nuzzling against him further. Every moment of the morning spent in bed would be relished for what it was, such a rare occasion that it was. Haven was always so busy with pack duties, though this was a source of pride for the young woman. Her mate was an important and valued member of their pack; he kept everyone safe from harm.

The smile that had been present since waking widened, softening her delicate face. "I always sleep well with you," she said softly. Princess loved falling asleep next to him, so warm and strong. She felt protected, even though she did not need the protection in their home. The orange knight was the best thing that had happened to the young Chance woman, and she wouldn't trade her life with him for anything. He made her feel loved and wanted, and those were things she craved. Princess loved the feeling of his arms around her at night; it was a perfect feeling. She couldn't imagine a bad night with him.

Golden eyes turned up to watch his face as he spoke, tentatively searching for words, it seemed. The way he said it caught her attention and she braced herself, unsure of what it might be. The subject came as a surprise, though it shouldn't have been entirely unexpected. Their friends had just become parents and they had both been there to witness the birth, and they had also been together for quite some time now. "I've thought about it... But the idea kind of scares me some," she admitted. Being a mother, when she herself did not know what actually made a good mother? It was terrifying.

The moments like these between them were so wonderful, so perfect. There were times that Haven worried that Princess felt a little neglected, with how busy he always was with hit duties to the pack. Being the Knight of the Court was a full time job, and one that could barely be neglected for a day. Although he didn't feel there was any imminent danger lurking outside of the pack's idyllic borders, one could never be too careful. Nothing had seemed amiss that day that Princess had been attacked until he had heard her calling for help. She was by far the most precious person to him in all the world, but it was his job to protect everyone else in their pack as well. Still, Princess didn't seem unhappy, and in these times all such worries were banished from his thoughts. They didn't need to spend every minute together to still love each other as much as they did.

Her words made his own smile broaden, and his tail thudded once against the mattress of their bed. "And I with you," he replied, his fingers tracing the line of her small shoulder. How he had been gifted with someone such as her after he had acted so unchivalrously with her their first night he didn't know, but he couldn't question the gift that he had been given. After his first romance had fallen apart so abruptly, Haven hadn't known if he would ever find another. Princess had proven that he was dead wrong in that assumption though, and when he had least expected it. The Chance fey might have started out as a rebound for him, but he would never let her go. He was her's, as she was his'.

Haven could feel his mate's golden eyes watch his face with uncertainty as he began to speak, which made his nerves about the subject flare up to an extent. The response he was met with wasn't as positive as he might have hoped, but it wasn't an outright refusal either. The Knight knew what his Lady feared, and he could understand those fears intimately. If possible, he hugged her even closer, hoping to reassure her. "You wouldn't be like her," he whispered to her. Princess would never do what her mother had done. Haven believed that with all his being.

His fingers trailing over her shoulders sent a tingle of pleasure down her spine, a small shudder following in the wake of his touch. He had never touched her in a way that didn’t bring a smile to her face, and she knew that it would always be that way. Haven was kind and gentle, and he loved her; he would never touch her roughly. She knew this to be absolutely true. Her pumpkin Knight would never set out to hurt her, and instead would protect and cherish her forever. That was just the way it was meant to be, a Knight protecting his Princess for all of their lives. It was just so perfect that she could hardly believe she had been so lucky.

Her answer was not the one he wanted, she knew, and it was not the one she had wanted to give. She wished she could tell him yes immediately and that they could build their family as soon as possible, as she knew that if she were to make a family, it would be with him and with no other. It was the fear of becoming like her mother that caused her to hesitate, that concern overwhelming her so much that she could not even feel half as certain as he sounded. Haven’s father had been a terrible example of parenthood, she knew, and from what little she knew of his birth mother, she had not been particularly wonderful at the job, either. However, Haven had always had Anu beside him, and Princess had been able to witness their bond firsthand. Her mate had always had a good example of parenthood in his adoptive mother. Princess, however, only felt she had the opposite.

“How can you be so sure?” she asked hesitantly. Haven seemed to know this for a fact, but the young woman was nowhere near as certain as he was. In fact, she was more than frightened of the idea. Perhaps being the way that Tokyo had been was bred into her and, even if she tried not to be, she ended up like her wretched example of a mother? Princess was afraid to subject any puppies to the childhood she’d had, even if it was accidentally done.

Despite being a Knight, and therefore by necessity a fighter, Haven was not a violent wolf. For him, violence was a last resort and he only relied on it in the direst of circumstances. In all other areas of his life, he was a kind and gentle creature. This was especially true of Princess. The Aatte didn't view her as weak or fragile at all (she couldn't be either of those things with all she had lived through) but he loved her and to him love could be conveyed in the slightest and softest of touches just as well as in the throes of passion. Even in their lovemaking he was careful not to be too forceful, never wanting to risk causing her an iota of pain. There was a significant size difference between them, and he was quite aware of his strength, and how to keep it in check.

Haven understood his mate's hesitance. When he and his sister had talked about puppies, he had expressed such concerns of his own to her. Mati had been quick to dismiss them though, saying that she knew that he would be an excellent father. Anu believed the same of him as well, and even if he still had his own reservations, he trusted their judgments more than his own. Fear could be a completely irrational thing and in this case he felt that his worries were unfounded. Even if he had never had a father it was something he could learn, right? If he could be a father without ever having one, Princess could be a good mother even if her own had been horrible. They could learn from the mistakes and cruelties of their sires and dams.

His love asked how he could be sure that she would not do those things. The ochre man pulled back a little, using a finger to bring her pretty golden eyes to meet his green gaze. "Because you aren't her Princess. I'm not my father, and you're not your mother." This was so important, and he hoped that she would believe the words he spoke. "You're a wonderful, kind, loving person Princess. I believe in you, and there is no one else in the whole world who I would want to be the mother of my children." The last thing he wanted was to push her into anything she wasn't ready for, but whether or not she decided she wanted a family right now, she needed to know that that was true.

With Haven, she had been given a life that she had never had. She had been stifled when she was young, doted on by the mother who so equally neglected her son. Princess had always lived her life for everyone else, but she had done something for herself alone in coming to live with Haven and becoming his mate. Some could argue that she had made the choice to move there for the pumpkin Knight, but this was untrue; while it was of course for him as well, she was the most important deciding factor in the move. He made her feel loved and free in ways she had never experienced in life, and she knew that she would continue to blossom in their life together. She loved him more than she had ever imagined herself loving a man.

The Lady Chance knew not if her meager family would have imagined her becoming a good mother, the young woman lacking the reassurances that Haven had. Her mother would only mock her and insult her, just as she had about Haven himself. Tokyo would draw out all those insecurities and feed off of them, drowning her daughter in taunting words. Princess felt a small frown cross her delicate features, only solidified by the idea that her brother would hardly be supportive, either. She doubted he would approve of her mateship, either, as he had disapproved of Haven from the very start, not giving him a fair chance to prove himself. But truthfully, Princess wondered, would their opinions actually matter? How could she possibly accept their opinions of her becoming a mother if she knew that they did not care about her? The young woman doubted she'd care.

Lifting her face when it was guided by her lover's tender fingers, Princess allowed the tendrils of a smile to reach her now, pushing away the worried frown. Haven sounded so certain of everything that he said that Princess could not help but begin to believe his words. "You could never be like your father, never. I'm just... Afraid to become like her," she admitted. She knew that she shared traits with her mother, and not considerably good ones. Princess was mildly vain and selfish and she liked to get her own way. As much as she was loathe to admit it, these were traits shared with the older Chance woman.

It was nearly impossible for Haven to make decisions, or to do things in his life without considering how it would affect the people that he loved. As a boy he had always wanted to make his mothers proud of him. He had wanted to be the strong and daring hero for his sisters. When he had come of age, and had become swallowed by the despair of his heritage, he had done it to hide the monster he thought he might become from his family. Haven never wanted to risk hurting them, and so he had crawled into a bottle in the city to avoid that possibility completely. The only choice he had ever made where he knew he would be hurting his loved ones was when he chose not to return to Crimson Dreams and to help found this pack. It had hurt Mati, and Anu, but he had needed to do it for him. If he had gone back, they would have only become his crutch, and he didn't want that for any of them. He had needed to learn to stand on his own.

Haven wondered what thoughts were swirling through her head as they discussed this. Clearly she was contemplating a lot on her mother and her own childhood, but he had a feeling that she was thinking of more than merely that. He was doing his best to help her, but he knew firsthand that it was a battle and a decision that she had to fight and come to on her own. This wasn't anything that anyone could do for her, not even her Knight. When she looked up to him though, the beginnings of a smile touched her face and he knew that he was reaching her. "I know," he said sympathetically. Haven understood that fear, but it was one they both needed to rise above so they could move forward in their lives. "You won't though. I know you wouldn't let that happen to yourself. I wouldn't let it happen to you either. I'm here to protect you from the monsters, both outside and inside your head." He gave her a quick, soft kiss.

"I don't want to push you into anything Princess. I know this is a big decision, and we both have our reasons to be nervous about it. Just promise me you'll think about it?" At this point, that was all he really wanted.

Princess was certain that he understood the worry she felt, but at the same time, there was more to it than that. Haven was brave and chivalrous, a true gentleman that would never hurt her. Princess knew that she was different. She was not as righteous as he, even if he saw her as beautiful and strong. Inside, she felt the opposite, still so uncertain about much in her life. The only thing she was not worried for was her love for Haven and his in return. There would never be a need to worry about that, for she knew that the love they shared was greater than anything else she had ever experienced. Despite all of her uncertainties, Lady Chance knew that Haven was always going to be there for her.

She trusted him with everything that she was, and she knew that his words were true. Haven would always be there to protect and love her, and she knew he would never allow her to slip into the role of her own mother, if it ever escaped her notice that it was happening. Haven would keep her anchored where she was meant to be, always. "I love you," she said softly, reaching up to kiss him in return after he spoke. "More than anything." Princess knew that she would think about becoming parents, and maybe soon. If there was anyone in the world she wanted to have children with, it was Haven and Haven alone. There could never be anyone else.
