His tongue lolled to one side as he sped in what was supposed to be a straight line. His over-sized paws thudded against the ground, ears flopping awkwardly in his face. The pup careened to the left, tripping over himself and sprawling unceremoniously on the ground. Almost as if expecting something, he hunkered closer to the earth, peering around himself with wary golden eyes. The path he came from seemed empty for the most part, save whatever foliage he left scattered in his wake.

Something had been chasing him. Something, something...where did it go? The pup lifted his head up slowly from the ground, sniffing at the air. He couldn't smell it, couldn't see it. Maybe it disappeared. Cautiously, he got to his feet, ambling on awkward puppy legs down the same path he had been attempting to run.

The air there smelled different, filled with salt from the coast that Kambujiya had never been close to. There was something else, but the pup was unfamiliar with the scent. It wasn't family, but it was similar. He had to pause, quirking his head to the side. Something familiar but not familiar, and nearby.

A yawn escaped the pup's muzzle, his eyes blinking rapidly as a sudden bout of sleep overtook him. Begrudgingly, he continued, tail limp and strides much slower.

Ruri and Heath's pups were growing, and though heh ad not gone again to visit them since their birth, the noble King had every intention of doing so soon. The reason he had not gone yet was to give them time to rear their puppies in the first few weeks of their life. As the puppies would only be ten or eleven days old by now, Vigilante did not think it was proper to go yet. He would wait until they were older to become more formally acquainted with the Infante and Infanta of the kingdom. They were the second litter of puppies to have been born into the pack, and that was a special thing. The pack had been home to many puppies, but most had come to them after their birth, and they took them in willingly.

The four-legged King was lost in thought as he strode around the borders of the pack, an incredibly rare thing for him. Vigilante very rarely allowed his thoughts to wander, and he was always aware of everything going on in the surrounding area. Because of this, it took him a moment to realize that there was a strange scent nearby, a canine that did not belong to the pack. This was not something entirely strange, so he set off in the direction of the smell at an easy lope, searching for the source of the foreign scent near the border of the Miracles pack.

Admittedly, he was surprised when he saw the puppy moving languidly, without the usual enthusiasm that most puppies seemed to have innately. The curly-tailed Malamute-German Shepherd mix studied the puppy, noting the torn ear and the tired demeanor. "Are you lost, little one?" he asked the puppy, his tone gentle. He was not a puppy of the pack—Arnette and Forte were the only ones and this puppy was at least a couple of months old—but perhaps he belonged to someone or somewhere close to Cour des Miracles.

His nose wiggled as he loped, once again tripping over the oversized paws and sprawling across the ground. A huff of frustration worked its way out of his muzzle, frustration that he was wandering, frustration that he was alone. He missed the den, but that other thing had taken it away from them.

The pup sniffed at the air again, smelling the salt from the coast. His mother had lived near, but it was an unfamiliar smell; it tickled the insides of his nostrils, a sensation he found wholly unpleasant. Ears flicking, he plopped down on his rump and let his tail swish absently on the ground. His mother needed to come home, he decided. Then they could have their den back.

The sound of an unfamiliar voice made Kambujiya scramble to his feet, tail tucking beneath his legs and ears pulling back, the show of fear made clownish by their large size. His golden eyes scanned the area in front of him, not thinking to look behind him, and he uttered a grunt of disapproval. The pup wheeled around after a long moment, and surprise caused him to lose balance as he finally took notice of the male before him.

The fear returned, accompanied by confusion as he tried to comprehend what he had been asked. "Lost?" His voice was soft, the word mixed with the clear signs of wonder as it was said. He stared at the male, sniffing the air between them and giving a wary glance before pulling himself up to his feet.

No table, short post, using my boyfriend's new pho?e.

Vigilante studied the puppy as his own presence was taken in by the young one. He supposed it was understandable that the puppy would be alarmed by him. The puppy was all alone, and the Miracles king was a very large dog. His question was unanswered and the puppy did not seem to understand. That was fine, though; he was young. Jade eyes lit up as the king forced a wide, warm smile. Inwardly, though, he was worried about the young one. He lowered himself so that he was closer to the puppy's level. "Where are your parents? My name is Vigilante, but you can call me Vigi if you want. What is your name?" He wanted to know very much whether or not the puppy had a family nearby, and if he did, why he was no longer with them.

He shook his head each time words came out of the older male, his ears flopping lazily against his face with each turn. His muzzled wrinkled, teeth shown briefly before the lip was set back down. This stranger didn't seem mean, not like the thing that had chased him out of the den that morning. He was smiling. Kambujiya quirked his head to the side at the gesture.

His name was Vigilante, but the pup was glad he had an alternative. Other questions filled the young one's ears, questions he wasn't sure how to answer. "Kam." His name came first as he scampered closer, trying to sniff Vigilante, ears falling back.

Where are your parents? It was a good question. He sat back, brows pulling down. "Dunno. Where your parens?" He looked behind the male curiously from his sitting position. Was it something common for others to have? He knew he and his siblings had mother, but he was unable to compare if everyone had parents who were supposed to be there. "Went 'way. Dunno."

As if the topic was forgotten, he jumped to his feet, almost falling over his paws as he tried to gain his balance. His eyes gained back their wary quality, though it quickly fled as he pounced Vigilante's front paw in an attempt to initiate a game.

Sorry for the wait, had a lot of homework. After your next post, I'll get you titled up and what not! 300+ words.

Vigilante held himself steady and still as he allowed the puppy to scamper closer to sniff him after giving his name. The caramel-colored King understood the young boy's apprehension; he was alone in a strange place and there was a large dog mutt in front of him, asking him questions. He had grown more accustomed to the way of puppies, as he'd had more experience with them now than he had upon first coming here, so he remained patient, even with Kam's response ot his question about the pup's parents. "I don't know where my parents are, either," he said with a similar shrug to the boy's. He assumed Lyra and Valter were still alive and well in Kaktowik, but he couldn't be certain. Vigilante wasn't sure it mattered very much to him if they were alive, either.

A laugh escaped his muzzle as Kam pounced on his paw. The puppy didn't seem to have anywhere to go, and Vigilante wasn't about to leave him out all alone. "Would you like to stay here, Kam, in this pack? You could come live with me, and we have two puppies, just a little oyunger than you. When they're older, you could play with them. Would you like that?" He hoped that the young boy would accept his offer, as he did not feel at all comfortable with the idea of letting him leave now. He was so young and had no idea about where his parents were; he didn't have a home to go to. Vigilante wanted to give him that home and to be able to keep the puppy safe. If his parents came looking for him at any point, then he would deal with that later. For now, all he saw was a young puppy with no parents and no home.

Kambujiya's ears perked to the sounds around them, tail beating against the ground at the familiarity. Vigi satisfied his question about parents, not knowing where his own were and giving the pup a sense of kinship for a brief moment, before the pup decided to make a game of their wait. He pounced the older canine's paw, causing him the let out a laugh that quirked Kambujiya's head to the side.

Would the pup like to stay there? There were other puppies, he said, that Kambujiya could play with. The boy sat and stared up at his new 'friend' almost pensively. Puppies? Like him? 'Dunno. Guess so,' he mused, looking to the side as something scampered past. In the back of his mind, he knew better than to wait for his mother at the den, where some other thing that moved in.

'Where here, Vigi?' He looked back to the face of the older male before casting a glance around. In truth, he didn't really care where he was. He had grown up nearby, and it was familiar enough. He simply wanted a reason to continue talking, a desire that died down as his muzzle opened in a wide yawn.

Lazily, he rolled onto his back, squirming in the earth beneath him to deal with an itch that had cropped up. His tongue lolled to the side, eyes swiveling around. Things looked different upside down, including the strange canine in front of him. Kam laughed and rolled back onto his stomach. 'Look funny.'

The dog mutt was not new to taking in lost puppies. Ever was now a year old, so she had been close to adulthood when he had "adopted" her, but he still cared for her now and he knew she still referred to him as her father. Vigilante would never have asked for that, though he did appreciate it. He knew he could take in Kam and care for him until the boy was older or until (if) his parents came looking for him. "This place is called Cour des Miracles, and I'm the King. I live in a place near the ocean, and you could, too. Have you ever seen the ocean?" he asked the young puppy with more than his normal bit of enthusiasm.

He chuckled at the sentiment. "I bet it does look funny, all upside down." He wagged his curly tail above his back. "What do you say we go home? I can show you everything there and get you settled, and if your parents come looking for you, at least you'll be safe here until then." He didn't think the prospects of the boy's parents coming to look for him were very high, but he was willing to entertain the idea. He did not wish any puppy to be orphaned, but he would do what he could for him.

True, he was unsure of what he had agreed to, but this male seemed nice to offer a place for Kam to stay and the pup wasn't going to turn down the offer while his mother was missing. He shook his head, ears flopping lazily against his head, while Vigilante spoke. Cour des Miracles was the name and, unfamiliar though it was, Kambujiya found it comforting; it was home for the meantime, afterall.

He didn't know what a King was. Vigilante said that he was King, but it held no real meaning to the young one. Instead of asking questions, he just assumed it meant that the mutt King might be special. He lived near the ocean, which sounded special to the pup's young ears, so he must be special.

"Ocean?" A pause filtered into his speech, eyes casting a wary gaze around him. "What's 'ocean'?" The anxiety faded with Vigilante's enthusiasm infecting the pup as he spoke. "I gedda see 'n ocean?" Excitement bounced off of each word.

The prospect of home calmed his joy and he looked around the area again before giving a nod and looking towards the land behind him. "Yeah. Home." Simple words, but an affirmative gesture. He would like to see King Vigi's home, the ocean especially. A nearby detour, where the possibility of his mother returning was lowered, but where he would spend his time comfortably.

How to explain the ocean? It was massive and astounding to him, having never seen it before coming to this area of the world. Such words were not much of an explanation, though, the dog mutt knew. To explain how all-encompassing it was would be impossible, especially when speaking to a young puppy. Vigilante smiled reassuringly at the puppy, who had seemed a bit confused about the ocean, and rightfully so. "Well, the ocean is a lot of water. It's all salty water, so you can't drink it, but it's nice to look at. It has waves, so the water moves a lot, but you can sometimes play in it, too, but only if it's warm enough and only close to the shore," he added as a warning. The ocean could easily pull a small puppy like Kam out to sea forever. If not forever, then it could still drag him out and he could get hurt badly. It was best to avoid it altogether.

Vigilante was glad that Kam seemed happy enough to accept his offer of giving him a home. Hopefully Ayita and the girls would not mind, though he found it unlikely that they would. Amaranth and Ever were both growing up and moving on with their lives, and Ayita had grown very distant in recent months. The responsibility of taking care of Kam would be mostly his, but he was fine with that. "We'll stop by to see the ocean on the way home, how does that sound?" They would not be able to play in the water, but they could touch their toes in, if Kam wanted. "Walk with me, and if you get tired, you can ride on my back," he added with a grin. Luperci rode horses all the time here, so he figured the puppy might get a kick out of riding on his back.

Forgot to add my OOC. We can do either. If you want, I'll start a new thread. ^.^ I know this is really just the joining one.

The pup was astounded as he hear of the ocean, described in simple terms as a lot of salty water that someone could swim in. Curiosity sprouted forward, ears perking and eyes looking past Vigilante in the hopes to see this giant entity. The warning of staying close to shore barely passed through Kam's mind, certainly not long enough to stick to anything; he would surely forget later on, but at the moment he wanted nothing else than to stick a paw in the salty water and see what it was like. All sorts of possibilities opened up in regards to the ocean.

His excitement still bubbling beneath his rusty brown pelt, he turned his eyes back towards the King as he promised they would see it on their way home, nodding emphatically when he was asked if it was okay. "Getta see it!" was his only response, his rump wiggling as his tail wagged from side to side joyfully. He was unable to stand still, running ahead and then turning back and returning to Vigilante while energy amassed in his mind.

Vigilante's words caused him to halt. Ride on his back? His head quirked to the side, ears flopping over; the thought was silly, he'd never heard of anyone riding on the back of another wolf or, in this case, dog hybrid. "Tha's silly, Vigi. Why someone ride on you?" His muzzle wrinkled, confusion remaining for a brief moment before the excitement returned and he sprinted ahead once again. "We see dat ocean, yeah!? Le's go!" He trotted in a circle, seeming to chase after his tail for a minute, before tottering on his feet and falling over with a soft thud. A shocked yelp emitted from him, followed by a fit of giggles as he wiggled around in the dirt.

Slight pp to get us to the beach, I hope that's okay! 300+ words.

The caramel-colored dog King was glad that he had been the one to come across the young puppy on the borders. Though he knew that no member of his pack would harm the young boy, it still reassured him to know that he would be able to care for the small rusty boy from now on, or at least until his parents came for him, if they ever did. Amaranth had not been living with them as of late, and Ever was growing quickly. Vigilante knew that they could put Kam on the second bed in the bedroom his adopted daughters had once shared and there would not be a problem. He would simply need to keep a very close eye on the boy to make sure he stayed safe. There were not many things he could do to get himself into trouble here, but it would still be best to keep a close eye on him.

Vigilante laughed heartily, a sound that seemed strange to his own ears, though it would sound normal to anyone that did not know his normal demeanor. The puppy was amusing, and the King knew that he would enjoy raising the boy. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” he said with a grin. “Riding on me would be silly! But you know what some wolves do? They ride on horses. Have you ever seen a horse? It looks like a deer, sort of, but bigger and not as scared. We have lots of horses here, too, so maybe you can see them after we see the ocean?” It might be too much for Kam to take in, but then, it also might be just what he needed.

He felt a surge of concern at the sharp yelp of the young puppy, but he stifled the worry quickly as Kam did not seem alarmed, instead filled with puppy energy. Vigilante watched him carefully as they walked, leading them in the direction of Lunenburg and the beach. Jade eyes studied the moving water as he lifted his nose, inhaling the scent of the salt deeply. They were not yet at Lunenburg, so the buildings were not yet visible, but he looked out at the ocean, stepping close to the area the tide was reaching. “That’s the ocean. What do you think, Kam?” Vigilante had been astounded by the sight the first time he had seen it.

Sorry that took so long. And that's fine. ^.^

He bounced along on his four paws with excitement that was unbridled. The idea that he would get to see something so big, and so strange to him, was simply exhilarating! Kam trotted forward, returning in a pattern of running out ahead and darting back to safe boundaries of Vigilante's steps, in an attempt to rid himself of the excess energy that built on this thrill. His mind was nowhere but the idea of that moment, not worried about what would happen to him as he moved into the area or went to live with Vigilante; he couldn't worry about who he would meet or how others would react to the idea of the new pup, he was only worried about his chance to see the ocean, as if his life depended on it.

The excess energy manifested in chasing his tail, the young pup tottering over with a shocked yelp as he landed on his rump. It didn't seem to faze him, and he was quickly on his feet again, bolting around in excitement. He couldn't wait to get to the ocean, to see the big salty water that Vigilante had explained to him.

The laugh that eminated from Vigilante made Kambujiya grin, a silly grin that seemed out of place amongst the serious facial expressions he usually wore. Why had he laughed? Well, it would be sillies to ride on 'im. He huffed at the silent musing, cocking his head to the side as the King spoke. The new information made his muddy eyes widen; they rode on horses?! What was a horse? He shook his head vehemently: "Whassa horst?" He wasn't sure what a deer was either, so it was difficult to compare, but he was told they could go see the many horses of the Cour des Miracles. The added promise of horses brought his excitement to a new crescendo.

He kept a steady pace as he followed the steps of Vigilante Haskel deeper into the territory of the Cour des Miracles. The sharp scent of salt and water, the cries of gulls above, brought Kambujiya's attention to the expanse of land ahead. He sniffed faintly, his head drawing back against his shoulders as his eyes caught the sight of the expansive water rolling against the shore. That was the ocean, Vigilante said. The ocean. The pup simply stared, eyes wide as he took in the sight of the water, the sea birds above it. It was shocking that it was so large!

"Is big!" The exclamation came out more as a squeak than a coherent sentence, but the words were there. He hid behind the rear legs of Viglante, peeking out uneasily.

No need to apologize! ^^ 500+ words.

Ever watchful, Vigilante kept an eye and an ear open at all times as they walked. The King did not think that the boy’s parents were anywhere close by, but if they were, he was listening for them. It seemed more than likely that Kam was lost or an orphan, and Vigilante had already stepped into the role of caregiver in the short time since finding the puppy on the borders. He saw it as his duty to keep the young pup safe and happy, and that was what he was going to do. It was as simple as that, and the caramel-colored King would not have thought to do anything else. He was sure that Kam’s mind was elsewhere, though, as such things were not of concern for a puppy. He was allowed to play and be excited without having to be worried about where he would end up. As far as Vigilante was concerned, that was his job, and it was Kam’s job to play and enjoy being young.

Jade eyes seemed to light up with a smile he normally did not wear, but it couldn’t be helped; Kam’s excitement was certainly rubbing off on him. “A horse is a big animal, even bigger than any wolf. They let you touch them and feed them and sometimes ride them, though I don’t. There’s a horse at my house, though, where you’ll live. You can meet him when we get there.” Vigilante was finding that it was difficult to explain things to a young puppy who had not already been exposed to everything, and while that was to be expected, it did surprise him somewhat. His experience with puppies was limited at best, especially those that were very young, but he would grow used to it. It was good timing, as well, considering the recent births of Arnette and Forte. Kam would be able to play with and grow with them when they were a bit older.

The dog mutt closed his eyes for a moment as he inhaled deeply, taking in the scent of the salt and water, listening to the gull overhead and the waves lapping on the white sands. He focused his attention on Kam again as the boy exclaimed his reaction, and the King lowered his head and turned to look at the puppy. “There is no need to be nervous. It won’t hurt you as long as you don’t go out too far. It is big. Do you want to get closer? I’ll go with you,” he added. Maybe Kam would not want to see it any more than he already had, but if he did, the King would certainly walk down to the edge with him, not only to ease Kam’s mind, but also to ease his own. He was not comfortable with the idea of him being too close to the water alone, as he was young and small. The ocean could easily sweep him away and the puppy would be helpless to it.

Sorry that took so long! <3 Ocean fun.

The explanation of the horses left him in awe, just as the ocean itself would. In the short time he had spent as a member of the Cour des Miracles, he had already been exposed to so much information, almost to the point his his brain bursting at the seams. He stared, listening to Vigilante as he spoke, taking in everything that he was able to. His mouth hung a bit, confused briefly until he was told that he could meet the horse at Vigilante's house. A smile broke over his face.

Until his eyes caught sight of the ocean. The smile faded, eyes going wide as he took in the expanse of water. So large, much bigger than even the King, who was the largest creature he'd ever met before. "Is big!" His exclamation was squeaky as he hid behind the rear legs of his new guardian, peering out at it uneasily. "There's no need to be nervous. It won't hurt you." He cast an unsure glance to Vigilante before stepping out from behind his legs. He leaned forward, sniffing at the ground as he made his way, cautiously, to the water's edge.

It was definitely salty, and the air was cool as the wind came off from the surface of the water, misting his fur with the salty oceanic brine that covered the beach around them. "Smells bad." His paws covered his nose, which rested against the ground.

We can wrap up whenever you'd like, sorry I keep taking ages to post. x.x; Life is faaaar too hectic lately...

The dog King stood quietly still as Kam explored the ocean, finally coming out from behind his large, muscular legs to step closer to the churning water. Thankfully, the waves were not bad today, and Vigilante was not terribly concerned about the small puppy being pulled out to sea. Even so, he was vigilant and watchful, and he was ready to step forward to scoop the boy up quickly if need be. There would be no possibility of Kam getting hurt or lost now that he had been taken in by the shepherd-malamute King.

It seemed that his internal worrying was not needed, as the boy did not venture into the water, and he complained about the smell. Vigilante chuckled softly, nodding his head. "It does," he agreed, "but you get used to it. When the weather is warm again, then I bet you'll even like coming to play on the beach." He hoped that would be the case, though he was not sure if he would. Amaranth had never seemed to want to go play on the beach, at least not with her mother or him, and Kable had left in the beginning of summer at the latest. His puppy experience in this part of the world was, admittedly, limited.
