When the words are touched with sorrow

Short posts okay?

Today was a good day, at least for the sick male. The weather was wonderful; sunny and warm, but not too hot. And he was lucid enough to appreciate it, when only made things better. Being sick was certainly not fun… in fact, it downright sucked. And to think this all could have been avoided if he hadn’t been so eager to be up and about again. He’d pushed himself too hard after recovering from his last bout of pneumonia, and ended up regressing. Some of it had been unavoidable, such as his fight with Glaesrim… and some of it hadn’t like his traipsing around the valley.

At least he knew that Storm was in good paws while he took a much-needed respite. His son-in-law Pilot, though inexperienced, had a good quality about him, and was a good second-in-command… so Phoenix was confident he’d make a good alpha for the time being. Storm needed a healthy leader who could remain conscious all seven days of the week, not a quivering mass of coughing and… other expulsions of fluid. He would reclaim his throne when he was ready… but until then, Phoenix would just have to lie here, soaking in the sun and recuperating. At least he had more time to spend with his children when he was awake.

Sunbathing brought fond memories of his mate. Iskata loved to curl up on a boulder and soak up the sun’s rays, though Phoenix himself was too dark-furred to enjoy it normally. He missed her so much… he had lost track of the months, but al least he had fond memories to tide him over until she returned to make new ones with him.

He had found her note five days ago. What could he do now? He was completely crushed. It wasn’t because of the fact that she had cheated on him. More, it was the fact that she felt that she needed to leave. Sure, Pilot would have to cope and get over the fact that Dierdre had sought love other places, but he still didn’t want her to leave entirely. He still loved her.

He had left the note in their den, a constant reminder that he would be spending his nights alone once again. He had crushed it in his paws, cried over it, and slept with it, all in attempts to somehow make sense of it. Still, he hadn’t, and now it remained idle and tattered in the one place that caused Pilot the most pain to go to.

Either way, Phoenix had trusted him to lead Storm while he recovered. He needed to grin a bare it when there were other responsibilities to tend to. If he could, he would leave and go search for her. But he was rooted in Storm for now. The pack needed him just as much as he needed his love.

Walking on two legs, Pilot looked to his hands as if the note still lingered there. Tears leaked from his eyes, but he remained silent. The sun was warm on his back, but somehow he felt so cold. He shivered a bit, before whipping away the moisture on his cheek.

How’s your computer coming?

Had Phoenix’s psychic abilities been precognitive rather than telepathic, he wouldn’t have placed this burden on Pilot right before the poor lad was about to lose his mate. But if not him, then who? Skoll probably wouldn’t have been interested, and considering his tenuous reputation, that would have been a mistake. Moon, his oldest son, was too young for a role of magnitude. Anderung was probably the only other one in the pack old enough, but she was far too timid and hadn’t been around long enough. A leader needed to be brave and inspire confidence, which was exactly why he couldn’t lead himself right now. Nobody could put their confidence in a sick wolf.

While Phoenix had grown into a sociable wolf in the recent years (he’d had to, in order to be a good leader) there were very few that he considered his close friends. Skoll and Pilot were definitely at the top of that list; he knew he could trust them with his life and vice versa. Opening his eyes, the temporarily-deposed alpha saw his successor wandering, seemingly aimlessly. Sensing something was amiss, Phoenix declared his presence atop the nearby boulder with a hoarse bark. “What’s wrong, son?” he asked, referring to their bond as in-laws only jokingly. Phoenix definitely didn’t look at Pilot as a subordinate child; if anything, he was like a brother. A little brother, but still a brother. “Have you been cryin’?”

Better. I got new parts in, but come to find out they're the wrong size. So now I have to wait to get a refund for those so that I can get the right size ones this time around! Haha.

Pilot, startled by the voice, looked up towards the familiar face in bewilderment. Before answering, he looked to his empty hands as if half expecting to see the note slipping from his grip. But no, he had left it behind. He really needed to get a firm stance on reality. At the moment, he was letting himself slip. "Oh, hey Phoenix. No, I was just walking…" Of course he knew that Phoenix was aware that he was lying. It wasn’t hard to tell that the once peppy wolf was now down in the slumps. And who could blame him? The note was a rather unexpected shock to the system.

"How’ve you been feeling?" He asked, clearly trying to coax the conversation in a different direction, primarily with its focus away from him and his soggy cheeks. "The coughing and such lifting at all?" He glanced up at the boulder, but for the most part he let his gaze rest just below where Phoenix was. He didn’t want to stare into his eyes in case he happened to notice that Pilot’s were still a bit wet. Sure, he trusted Phoenix and everything, but at the same time, he didn’t want his mate’s father to say things Pilot didn’t want to hear. Not that he would, but Pilot wasn’t really up for taking any chances.
