black as holes within a memory

His feet moved slowly across the landscape, carrying a freshly scarred and body under a pelt that had finally lost the taint of poisoned blood. He no longer smelled like smoke. Of course, Gabriel did not believe that the scent of smoke would truly every leave him. It was engrained into his very pelt, turning what had been a golden bronze like his father’s into a sable coat that only held traces of his parents in it. He very much resembled relatives he never had and never would meet, for they were either long dead or living in places of the world that the coy-wolf would not venture.

The fact he had waited to come felt right. He had not been in a right state of mind for days, and he had known that he could not go empty handed. Gabriel, after all, still wore the sign of his father. He believed that for as similar as he was to Haku, he would share some of these traits with his son. Of course, Gabriel also believed that the shadow of taint would be a very real thing within the Soul children. Haku’s spawn would always be viewed warily, especially those old enough to remember him.

He carried the thing in a pouch he had taken from the mansion. Gabriel would not wear it. Four-legged as he was, the bag was carried in his mouth. It tasted of old leather and rubbed uncomfortably against his tongue, but he would not touch the thing more then he needed too. It had taken him half a day to reach the borders of the pack he would likely always consider his enemy, and there he cast the pouch to the ground sourly. Taking a breath, the Aquila lifted his muzzle and called for Conor.

The call was definitely unexpected and set the male into motion at once. Their roles had not really changed, and the Dahlian felt himself worry about the fact that the Aquila was waiting by his doorsteps. The autumn male shifted into his smaller quadruped for the improved speed, though he did in fact think about taking the secui form for this occasion, but while his trust in Inferni was something fragile, he did in fact hold a certain amount of trust in its leader. Gabriel was never someone he would be able to get along with in a way that could matter though, for the conflicts between Inferni and Dahlia de Mai ran too deep. Conor did not wish to believe so, but he had not been there from the start like the Inferni Veteran.

When he finally reached the scene, he settled on a respectable distance, eyeing the doggish hybrid with orbs that revealed nothing but their unique colour. There was a slight dip of his muzzle, but he would allow Gabriel to bring forth the matter. White tipped tail moved to curl around his frame as he sat down. A moment later the lavender was occupied by the pouch on the floor, but he quickly redirected his focus and turned back to the male.

For whatever else he was, Gabriel knew better than to wage war alone. He would never have attacked Conor at his doorstep. He might have, if the need called for it, slaughter him in unclaimed lands. Politics were as much a part of his heritage as the madness. His malice for the boy’s father would not cause him to bring violence down on the young leader. He would never trust him. He would never be able to forget the terrible things Haku had done, and he would hold this above his children’s heads for as long as he lived.

Conor settled across from him. He was still very young, Gabriel reflected. Younger then he had been when Inferni had been turned over to him. Whether or not that inexperience would burden the boy was yet to be seen. Gabriel believed it would. He knew the weight. What would he do now, with the knowledge he was about to gain? This was a test. Gabriel would make certain it was. “Your father is dead,” he said.

There were already the early signs of general exhaustion in the young male’s features. The weight would continue to push him down until he could no longer deal with things the way he currently did. Perhaps he remained an idealist. There was no perfect way to happiness and he could not do a flawless job here. There had been little left of the wolf pack when Conor had taken the leading role, and while he had found it hard to deal with then, the pack’s continuous growth would prove to give birth to more responsibility. He probably believed that he could please everyone if he only worked hard enough, but this was a lesson he would learn during these coming months. Conor Soul could be considered mature for his young age, but that was not always enough.

Gabriel de le Poer said that Haku Soul was dead. The dark flame within the boy was lit that moment. There was a pressure building from the depths of his chest. The Dahlian’s lilac eyes readjusted to focus in on the hard amber gaze of the long-time clan leader. He believed that these were raw fact laid out before him. The young face became a mask, for it remained unmoving as everything inside pulsed and changed. These, were amazing news. He sought for sadness within the bouquet of emotions within and was happy to realize that there was none. There was no need guessing how Gabriel knew and how it had happened. ”Thank you,” was what he responded with.

Gabriel had rid the lands of a monster, and the young wolf would be able to rest easy now knowing that the devil dressed in a wolf’s hide was no longer stalking in the shadows. Conor suspected this was not the only reason why Gabriel was here. ”What is that?” he inquired, pushing the mad relief aside for now as long as he was in the presence of the veteran. Muzzle pointed to the pouch on the ground between them. Peace offerings were not necessary at this point, and he doubted Gabriel was that kind of creature.

Something flickered in the boy’s eyes and made a quiet voice whisper to the Aquila. He took notice of it. He had trusted his intuition and it had never lied to him before. It was not an obvious change, but something that reminded him of his fallen brothers. Conor’s eyes reminded him of Andre’s, of Samael’s—and he did not trust that look. Perhaps he was right in believing that Conor was still his father’s son. Time would tell.

“Proof,” he said flatly. Though he did not need it, Gabriel intended to ensure that the world knew of the fall of the beast. The second reason—the same reason that he wore his father’s necklace—was unspoken. Like it or not, Haku was the boy’s father. He would never get to bury him, but the cursed thing could usurp the need for blood and bone.

Ears turned back towards his cinnamon skull as he was granted an answer. Conor would never have asked for any sort of proof. While the two males were as different as their blood and coloration, he knew that he could trust Gabriel in this matter. Despite their lack of love for each other, they had shared this common goal. Conor’s need for revenge had not been burning brightly as Gabriel’s, but he too had wished for Haku Soul’s death. Tomorrow it would feel like a new era rising with the first rays of a blushing sun and Haku Soul would not be there to see it. It was fortunate for Conor that he misinterpreted his emotions as joy and burning relief. Gabriel had seen the rise and fall of demons and madmen alike, but the young wolf was unable to recognize such traits.

The young alpha nodded at the Aquila's words, then rose and moved to retrieve the item. The thing inside was hard and round against his jaws, and for now the young male would remain oblivious of its identity. Conor had never seen the blue stone necklace that his father had worn the day that his own dagger had pierced through his heart. Conor did not know how everything had begun. He would have been reluctant to accept this piece of proof had he known, but ignorance was bliss for now and when time was ripe he would suffer for his lack of knowledge of his father’s demons. There was really no need for more words to be exchanged, and the alpha turned to exit the scene, allowing his form to remain relaxed with a lightly waving tail to further establish the scene as grateful from his side.

Though the black mask of a face Gabriel wore did not change, a part of him wished that Conor had opened the thing. Though it was apparent there was no love for Haku in the boy, he still shared that tainted blood. He still shared the darkness of his father, just as Gabriel did. If he had shown anything—any sort of compassion, any sort of regret or sorrow—then Gabriel might have spoken more to him. He might have tested the boy. He might have killed him. In his mind, Haku’s spawn was wicked and the evil needed to be cleansed from the land. If he had his way, all of the beasts children, righteous and unholy alike, would be erased from the earth.

He had done so before.

Yet the boy left him wondering, watching his retreating figure, and Gabriel felt his lips curl. Though he did not know it, he could sense something wicked around the boy, sense something wicked in the thing that he had just handed over. With a grunt, the coy-wolf rose to his feet and began moving north.
