ooc: xeris is in lupus/4-legged form.

In the quiet of the woods, a lone doe was grazing on what little dried foliage was left. She stood elegantly against the mostly frozen backdrop, and then suddenly snapped to attention, ears perking up, as she heard a sound in the distance. The deer took off running just as Xeris leaped at her, and the white wolfess found herself landing nose down in the snow. She gave a small growl, frustrated that her prey had escaped. Perhaps she'd try somewhere else. Standing back up, Xeris shook the snow from her fur and turned to head in the direction she had seen the doe run, following its hoofprints in the snow and its scent.

After a while, though, it became apparent that the scarred female had been outsmarted. The doe had seemingly disappeared, probably by going through a stream or something. Xeris sighed, defeated, and turned back to head out of the woods. This area of the woods was dangerous territory; it bordered on the unclaimed woods which were the only thing that stood between Phoenix Valley and Inferni. There was no way Xeris would continue heading north. Thus, she quietly moved through the snow-covered forest, her white coat mostly blending in with the ground.

Several days had passed already since Kami's meeting with Jefferson, Noah, and Ookami. Despite his acceptance into the pack little had changed with his lifestyle. The golden eyed wolf strode confidently along the packs borders, his black fur contrasting against the snow covered landscape. He had been spending his days roaming the territories, trying to get a clear understanding of just how much area this pack claimed. Of course he knew it would be easier if he had asked Noah or Ookami to guide him, but he wanted the time to think. It was this thinking that had him distracted as he leaped over fallen trees and pushed his way through the thick brush of the forest he had been walking in. He moved gracefully and with purpose, but it was clear he was not focusing on the world around him.

The quiet forest quickly became filled with the sound of breaking branches and crunching snow as something large was forcing its way through. Instantly Kami became alert once again, his right ear turning in the direction of the sound as his heart beat began to quicken. The deer broke through the brush only a few yards in front of him and never slowed down. Its powerful hooves carried it into and out of Kamis sight before he even had a chance to react. The flashing white of its raised tail vanished into the woods as it fled from some unseen predator. Choatic sounds of the running doe began to slowly fade away until once again the forest fell silent and only the sound of Kamis beating heart filled his ears. It took him a moment to recover, and only another moment to curse at himself. He had been careless and stupid to let his guard down so low, but he would have to beat himself up later With his senses now completely tuned to his surroundings a faint scent crept into his nose. The scent of what Kami could only assume was the frightened deers assailant, a wolf.

Without another thought he headed in the direction of this stranger. Moving now through the trees as if he were part of the forest itself. As he had told Jefferson only days before, this is what he was best at. Months of hunting in unfriendly territory had made Kami very good at tracking and stalking prey. The scent was leading Kami back into pack territory, so he couldn't help but think that they were most likely friendly. Though he was pretty confident that this area was on the outer borders and assuming anything about this wolf would be foolish. With all this in mind, he ran. The scent growing stronger with each step until finally he had found them. Kami's eyes narrowed as he squinted to try and better his vision. The yellow eyes had never been all that great at seeing long distances, and it didn't help that this wolf was white furred. Without hesitation Kami lifted his head to the sky and gave out a low, short howl. The sound only carried itself far enough to get their attention, he wasn't wanting to call the rest of the pack if he could help it. His head lowered as the howl died off, his gaze fixed on the stranger as he awaited their reaction. . .

The snow crunched beneath Xeris' paws as she walked, and for a while that was the only sound she could hear. Quite suddenly, however, a howl pierced the air, and it sounded as if it was from close by. Very close by. She was a little unsure why someone would howl like that to get attention, but nonetheless she turned around and attempted to scope out the source of the vocalization. It took her a moment, but she was finally able to make out a form amidst the snow-covered trees. He had the scent of the Valley on him, but it was very faint; he must have just recently arrived but he had definitely been here for a while.

Cautiously, Xeris approached the unfamiliar wolf, her golden eyes meeting with his for a moment as if asking if he was trying to get her attention. "Hello there," she said softly. She was on edge a little, knowing that they were so close to the northern border, but she figured that if the stranger hadn't attacked already then he wasn't going to. Or at least, she certainly hoped so. There were enough scars on the white wolfess' body already.

OOC: Sorry for slow reply, work week starting up again x.x

He was confident now that his prey was not an intruder into pack lands, but a member of the Valley themselves. Despite this realization he couldn't help but be surprised at the calm reaction to his sudden announcement. Since his acceptance into the pack he had no contact with any of its members. Though Kami was not a very social being, he did know the importance of first impressions and the impact it could have in the long term. So with a heavy sigh he took off in a light run towards her. His eyes never leaving the white wolf as he closed the narrow distance between them.

The closer he got the more he could see that this wolf had not gone through life unscathed. His eyes lingering on the several scars that marred the small females body before returning to meet her inquisitive eyes.. Her voice had been soft and sweet, but there was a slight edge in her tone. " Hello. . ." he said hastily as he took a seat in front of her. The cool winter air burning his lungs as he panted lightly trying to catch the breath he had lost while on the hunt. He could sense that she was a bit uneasy and he certainly couldn't blame her. If anything Kami was impressed once again by the bravery of this packs members.

Kami lowered his head slightly in an effort to calm her nerves as he spoke " I caught your scent while I was patrolling the Valleys borders." the voice came out blunt and no nonsense as if he were reporting the information instead of having a casual conversation. " I thought you might be an intruder, so I stalked you here." a very awkward and unnatural laugh came at the end of this statement. He thought the idea of stalking a fellow pack mate was fairly amusing, but relaying that idea was difficult. Perhaps he was just trying to hard, forcing things was obviously not working out the way he had hoped. The look in his eyes softening slightly as his right ear lowered only a fraction of an inch. This was frustrating for him, but he knew it was the only way to get any sort of improvement " My name is Kami by the way. .. " he said once again looking into the piercing gaze of the white wolfess.

ooc: not a problem, I've got classes and such so I know how you feel x_x

Xeris studied the dark-furred wolf before her as he came closer, listening as he explained that he had mistaken her for an intruder. Her face hardened for a brief moment as she recalled what had happened when she accidentally trespassed on another's lands and was thought to be there with ill intent. She shook the thoughts from her mind, though, and offered her packmate a small smile. "Well, it's good that you're out and about, watching out for us and all. Although we haven't had much trouble around here lately." Or at least as far as she knew. Nobody had said anything to her about any recent issues with the other packs; the only one she could even think that they might run into trouble with again was Inferni, and she hadn't heard much about them lately.

The unfamiliar wolf introduced himself as Kami, and Xeris gave him a respectful nod. "It's nice to meet you, Kami. I'm Xeris." She paused for a moment, continuing to look over him, noticing a couple of scars here and there like the ones she herself bore on her body. "You must have come to the Valley only recently. How are you liking it so far?"

OOC: Well when the weekend rolls around again I'll be alot more active lol Just two more days! whoooo

His ear perked up to its fullest height upon hearing his companion introduce herself. The name " Xeris" seemed to remind him of something, but nothing he could put his finger on at this moment. Regardless he had a feeling that he wouldn't be forgetting the name anytime soon. Having finally caught his breath Kami felt comfortable enough to sit down in front of her. Listening to the question as his black tail curled around his side as if it were seeking warmth from the snow it had just been plunged into. "Valley only recently?" he repeated the words in his mind as if he was unsure of what she ment.A bit surprised that the short time he had spent in the territory was enough for her to be able to tell him apart from any random stranger. Not that he was complaining.

" Well, yes. I've been wandering the territory for a few days now." his voice trailing off a bit as the words seemed to be coming more naturally to him. His eyes glancing away for the first time, diverting away from Xeris's gaze. Closing his left eye slightly as he looked in the direction that Xeris had been heading before he had stopped her. What he could only assume was closer to the heart of the packs territory, an area he had not even attempted to travel. " I. . ." he paused for a moment to think " Like it, or at least what I've seen from the borders. I haven't seen anything else" In fact he was only really traveling what he thought were the borders. Kami was a proud wolf, but he knew that he could not patrol the outlying reaches of the packs territory forever.

Finally he turned back to face Xeris. His eyes lingering on the scars marring each side of her muzzle and couldn't help but wonder the story behind them. Perhaps in time he would hear it, but perhaps not. He felt comfortable with this wolfess, she seemed sincere. Which once again the hope he had felt when meeting Noah, Ookami, and even Jefferson. This feeling seemed to warm him a bit amid this frozen forest. Kami couldn't help but smile inwardly while thinking about his meeting with the alpha. He thought they had both tested each other that night and Kami could not have hoped for a better outcome." I'd like to come with you." he spoke to Xeris bluntly, but quickly caught himself " If you wouldn't mind?" he asked, his tone more friendly as if he was asking a favor.

ooc: sorry for the ginormous wait. had a difficult week.

Xeris listened politely to her new packmate's words. It seemed that he hadn't been around long enough for the territory to make a huge impression on him, which was understandable. Xeris recalled when she first arrived in the Valley; she too had spent quite a while wandering about and exploring her new home. But after a while, she had realized that it was a very nice place and she did indeed call it home now. She gave Kami a small smile. "I'm sure you'll soon find that it is a great place to call home. And that's what it is...home." She stopped there, before she got too abstract and dreamy about the packlands as she had a tendency to do.

And then Kami asked to go with her. Xeris considered this for a moment as she wasn't really going anywhere in particular. But she had shown Tala around the territory before, so she figured that it would be okay if she showed Kami around too. Nodding, she replied, "Sure. I wasn't heading in any particular direction...is there any place you'd like to go? I know my way around fairly well."

Kami looked upon Xeris with tired eyes as he listened to how fondly she spoke of the pack lands. He felt pretty certain that she had a particular love for the pack, but as of right now he could not share such a emotional tie. Feeling nearly as much an outsider as he did the night he came to the borders. " Home?" He spoke the word almost fondly, as if the word had cut through his emotional guard and hit something deep within him. Perhaps it was the way she said it, or the memories that the word brought to the forefront of his mind. " Be realistic. . ." he thought to himself as he once again stood up. Shaking his body to remove any snow from his coat as yellow eyes narrowed onto Xeris, listening to her question.

He had no idea what could lie within these packlands, so giving her a specific answer to what he would like to see would be almost impossible. " How about somewhere a bit warmer and then we can go from there?" a slight shiver rolling across his body as the words escaped him. Kami had become used to traveling through the frost covered forests and soft snow, but that didn't mean he had to like it. A reprieve from the frozen ground would definitely be welcome. " So which way would that be?" he asked bluntly as he took a few steps in the direction that Xeris had been heading before he had stopped her. Kami was anxious to get back on the move, Sitting still had always seemed to make the cold sink into his fur so much faster. Regardless of the cold he couldn't help but be curious about the white wolfess. Maybe he could show her what she loved about this place so much.

ooc: gonna go ahead and assume that they walked a ways.

Somewhere warmer? Xeris thought for a moment about where in the territory they could go to find a more comfortable temperature. Keeping the layout of the packlands in mind, she turned to the southeast, in the direction of one of her favorite places in Phoenix Valley, the Quartz Shoreline. The sand usually intensified the sun's heat, and even in the cold of winter it could sometimes be a little bit warmer on the beach. "This way."

The crisp ocean breeze greeted Xeris' nose with a scent of salt and the sound of the rolling waves began to reach her ears as the two approached the shoreline. She looked out over the water for a moment, scanning the horizon with golden eyes, before she turned to Kami once more. "They call this the Quartz Shoreline. In the summer it's always nice to spend time here." Off in the distance, the Trinity Islands were visible along the horizon, but they were too far away to spot the mansion on Sanctuary Island. Xeris would see what Kami wanted to do next before deciding where else they should go.

Kami could smell the sea long before he could see the coastline. The familiar scent of salt and sand filling his sensea as he followed the white wolfess. His dark paw sinking slightly into the sun warmed pebbles as they left the forest behind them. Stepping out onto the beach Kami couldn't help but feel a bit at peace as if the wind had been sent by the sea to just wipe his worries away. He had always felt the most comfortable when walking the shores of his old pack, playing and laughing with his family as pup. The memories were something he would often go back to when he was traveling alone. One of the memories that made him hopeful that maybe one day he could enjoy life as much as he did back then.

Silently he had come to take a seat next to Xeris, his gaze focused on the horizon. Rotating only his right ear in her direction as she spoke of this places name, doing his best to commit it to memory. His tail curling up around his side as it often did when he was around other wolves, the marking on his tail only barely visible as his eyes darted towards the silent female. It seemed pretty obvious to him that she enjoyed this particular place. " I had my doubts, but it feels good being a part of something again." he spoke out loud, as much to himself as to Xeris. He was in no hurry to leave this beach, enjoying the feeling of the surf spraying against his dark fur. " Your scars. . ." his head moving just slightly so that he could get a better look at the wolfess. " You don't seem the type to deserve wounds like those." the words rolled off his tongue with a friendly tone as his eyes narrowed slightly, looking upon what he could only think of as bite marks on each side of her snowy white muzzle. Kami knew that he would have all the time he needed to explore the packlands and that they would remain unchanging. Here, on this beach seemed as good a spot as any to get to learn more about the pack itself. Or at least one of its members. . .
