In the recent weeks, Salvia had begun to grow into her frame. She was not completely grown yet, as her ears and paws betrayed, but it was clear she had benefited from her father’s blood. A more savage truth was that she had profited from Wretch’s disappearance. Their parents had told the remaining pair what had happened several nights ago. Salvia had been upset, but she was a critical girl and quickly surmised the situation in its simplicity—either Wretch had left by choice or she was dead. Death was far more reasonable to her. It would be cruel to think her sister had left without a word.

Yet Salvia, despite her youth, had proven capable of cruelty. She had observed the way Itzcitla hunted and often accompanied him regardless of how the cat felt. Through this method she learned to hunt like a cat, albeit it unsuccessfully most of the time. Yet with small animals she did catch, mice and voles and rats, she did not simply kill them; she played.

It was mercifully warm today, which meant their odd house-slave was in a better mood than usual. Molcaxitl liked warm weather, as Salvia had learned from her broken conversations in Spanish. While her mother and the other Spanish speaking coyotes often thought ill of Molca, Salvia had begun using her to replace Wretch in many ways. Unlike Wretch, Molca was very pretty as well. El agua es probablemente frío, pero será bueno para ti, Salvia called over her shoulder, constantly aware of the older woman’s presence behind her. Usted está sucio. Trate de no hacerlo. Eres bonita, no se ven mal.” Wretch always looked dirty to Salvia. Even though she was fussy about her own coat, Sal had no fear of becoming dirty—only remaining in such a state for too long.
