The little things in life

For Skye. Backdated to June 29th. This should be a pretty quick thread ;o

The coywolf's shack was a mess, moreso than usual. The past few days he had allowed his rambunctious children to run around the house which stored all of his things.. which turned out to be a horrible idea. The young ones were just like their father, in that way, wanting to touch everything and break several others in the process. Things lay scattered across the floor, the rickety tables, even strung along the staircase. The moment the coywolf entered the scene that morning, when Skye decided to take the kids out of his hands for the day, the scene before him made him glad they were gone.

Bangle never wanted to admit that he wasn't all that ready for children, but his mate seemed to be. Still, with Shawchert gone she felt a tremendous weight of responsibility on her shoulders, which left him with the burden of looking after the kids for most of the time. Today they'd be leaving the safety of the pack for the first time, and though the man worried some he also encouraged the red headed woman to take them. It gave him peace of mind, if only temporarily, that he could finally be on his own once again.

Still, it wasn't all that bad. Deep down, some unknown fatherly instinct made him love his children, and their mother even more. He spent less and less time in his shack, but never let go of the eerie little place. The craftsman had even thought about getting around to the tree house he intended to build for himself - only now it would be for his family to enjoy. Bangle clicked his tongue once, hands on his hips as he peered into the darkness and inspected the place. The 'f' word was still strange on his tongue, but he did not dismiss it either.

Seeing a part of the destruction left behind by the youngsters suddenly caused something to stir within his belly. It moved up to his throat and suddenly erupted into full blown laughter. His muzzle split wide and his tongue rolled out as he ushered out a long, drawn out guffaw. It was in part to release the stress that had been building within him, but also in the realization of the triplets' natural instincts. It took a few minutes for him to quiet down, though he was certain his laughter hadn't caused too much of a stir in Thornbury - the pack would be used to hearing it by now. Bending down, he spent no time in looking over the entirety of the mess the three minions made. He couldn't help but grin as he picked things up - they were just like him.

The female had woken up in a panic - two of her pups had been snuggled close to her side, but one of them - the most adventurous one, the one that was most like her mate - had wandered off somewhere, nowhere to be seen. Panicked and desperate, she had grabbed her two pups and raced to where she followed the little one's scent;; she lost it soon, however, and it mingled with the scent of a man. There was no fear-scent of her pup, nor was there blood or anything else menacing, but the fact remained - Nathaniel was gone.

She had spent almost an hour calling out his name and trying to track down his scent to no avail. Finally, in tears, she had took her pups back to Cercatori d'Arte - she had to tell Bangle. They had to look for her pup.

She burst through the coywolf's door without another notice or a knock or a hello - her face streaming with tears and her eyes wide in desperation, she set down her pups gently on the floor - just Erzulie and Robert, who were looking around in bewiderment. "Where Nat?" Erzulie asked softly, which sent Skye into another fit of crying before she calmed down enough to look at Bangle.

"Took pups - Ethereal Eclipse - f-fell asleep," she managed before she began to sob again; this was all her fault! She sniffed and tried again. "Nathaniel... left... his scent disappeared after it mingled with the scent of another man! I can't f-f-find him!"

He had only just begun to clean when he heard rushing footsteps. Bangle turned from his position in the living room to see Skye at the doorway, looking distraught even from a distance. "Skye, what's th'-" The male stopped mid sentence when he saw only two pups that she put down, and looked around for Nathaniel. That minion was just like him in every way, and had thought that maybe he trailed behind his mother a bit.

But a sickening feeling in his stomach arose when 'Zulie spoke up curiously, which caused Skye to break down and cry. Bright orange-yellow eyes dulled, and widened in the craftsman's face. "Where's.." But the female's cries were loud, and Bangle crossed the room in a few swift steps to get to her, the pups now at his feet. Placing his hands on her shaking shoulders, Bangle looked into her face as she choked out an explanation. As she mentioned her falling asleep, he took on a look of sympathy for her, he knew how hard she was working, and knew she couldn't help but be exhausted when she was finally able to relax.

But she wasn't finished, and her last words were hard for her to choke out. His expression hardened, and the coywolf's worst fears had come true. Everything seemed to freeze around him, and he hardly noticed the desperate whining of his other two children, huddled close to their mother's feet.

Gone. 'Thaniel, the troublemaker most like him, was gone. Someone had taken him.

"No.." The male uttered, shock evident in his once jovial voice. He attempted to express himself in words, but they didn't come out. A cold fear ran up his spine, attempting to take in the news. When it finally sunk in, Bangle reacted the only way he could. "No.. no, no, NO!!" With each word repeated his voice ascended, until it finally erupted into an angry tone that even scared the other two minions. Their bodies shrunk behind their mother.

Bangle backed away from what remained of his family and angrily swung his arm at objects he just picked up. They littered the floor and broke into several bits. He began to breath hard, and braced himself on the table, possibly to keep him from falling to the ground. Shutting his eyes tightly, he knew he had to control himself, though inwardly he felt himself shaking. The coywolf male knew he couldn't blame his mate, he knew how much wanderlust 'Thaniel had in him. When Bangle was younger, he did the very same, but at such a young age a pup had no real concept of danger. Not when it was enticing.

After a few moments of silence, the male still remained bracing himself against the wooden table, head still bent and refusing to look at the other three. "What happened, Skye?" He knew he had to get as much information as possible, though he wasn't sure how much of it he would grasp right now. The craftsman's mind was reeling, and he felt sick; but once thing was certain - Bangle needed to find their son.

Skye's ears flattened against her head as her mate began to yell out 'no' - her pups scampered behind her, afraid of the coywolf's loud outbursts. The woman had stopped crying long enough for her to calm herself - sobbing and crying wouldn't help anyone find Nathaniel. She watched as Bangle backed away from her, and she was afraid that he was angry at her - not that she wouldn't deserve it, after losing Nathaniel so carelessly like that. She turned around and looked at her pups on the ground, kneeling down to them, caressing them and telling them comforting words until they stopped shaking at the loud noises their father made and began to calm down.

That ended, however, as a loud shattering crash behind her made them begin to cry all over again. Harried, the mother picked up her children and whispered to them, turning around and seeing the broken glass all over the floor. She had picked them up so that they wouldn't wander into it and hurt themselves or something equally horrible - she murmured to them until they calmed down again, and she stared at Bangle; she hadn't seen him lose his temper quite like this in a long time, although she could tell now that he was simply angry in general and wasn't taking out his anger on his family.

She watched as the coywolf braced himself against the table, shaking, but attempting to keep himself under control. She didn't try and intervene, and the pups clutched against her, looking at their father with a mixture of curiousity and startled wonder; she murmured to them again, getting them to revert to their normally calm selves; Erzulie looked up at Skye and back to Bangle while Robert began to fall asleep, seemingly tired from all the yelling and searching and crying.

Bangle didn't turn around, but he did ask Skye a question, which she answered the best she could.

"I had taken the pups out to Ethereal Eclipse so they could see more of the forest," she began, remarkably calm. "We played for a while, and then I fell asleep with my pups in my arms - all of them. I thought that they were asleep too." She paused, then continued the story.

"When I awoke, Nathaniel was gone. I followed his scent as far as I could, which was pretty far - perhaps half a mile. It mingled with the scent of a man - all I could get from the scent was that he was a man. I couldn't get his pack or species. The scents mingled for a while, then disappeared soon after... Nathaniel's scent didn't seem scared, and there wasn't any blood or sign of a struggle... maybe the man thought Nathaniel was lost and brought him to his home or something... I tried calling out for him for the longest time, I looked everywhere; but there was no sign of our son," she said miserably.

That was the good part - the part that gave her hope. There was no blood and no sign of a struggle. That means the man didn't harm her baby.. at least, not yet. The thought pricked at her mind and made her shiver in horror - no, she wouldn't think of that possibility.

Bat-like ears swiveled on top of his head as he heard his mate speak, though for all his efforts to try and listen to her, Bangle could mostly hear his rapid heartbeat. The male swallowed hard with each passing minute, only imagining what could be happening to their son by this.. 'man'. He kept his odd position against the small table, breathing hard through his nostrils now. Even if Nathaniel wasn't hurt now, whomever took him had no intention of bringing him back.

Finally, the coywolf straightened up and looked directly at Skye. He didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise about someone taking their son. 'Thaniel wasn't some kind of dog with a collar, which humans used to own in their households, and if one was lost the collar would show where they lived. The male with the decorated dreadlocks looked at Skye first, then to both of his children in turn. One had fallen asleep, while Erzulie stared directly back at him. Something about her eyes held him there for a moment, but slowly Bangle's breathing slowed.

"I've got t' go find 'im." His voice was laced with seriousness, as he moved about his messy shack to gather up his traveling things. Trips away from home were not new to the male, only this time it wasn't for trade, crafting, or for pleasure. In quick movements with his hands he grabbed armfuls of things in his shack, but most other things were back at Skye's household. Striding back towards the entrance, next to Skye, he stopped and glanced down at her once more. Her eyes were filled with concern, as his were, and shifting his arms he freed a hand, to cup under her chin. "It'll be alrigh'," he said, as reassuring as he possibly could be. Bangle wasn't sure if he believed his own words.

Stepping out of his shack, he made a beeline for Skye's house for the remainder of his things. Without looking back, he called back out to the red headed female. "I'm takin' Jack wit' me." Traveling on the horse would make things faster, and the creature would be able to cover more ground and carry more things. The coywolf was unsure how long he'd be gone, and as he leaped up on the porch and made his way through the rooms of Skye's house, the coywolf was determined to return with the boy. No matter where he had to search, he'd go through every inch of the land - both familiar and unfamiliar - to bring back the missing link.

She watched as her mate's ears swiveled around to listen to her, and he stayed in the hunched position for a long time. Robert was still asleep, but Erzulie was looking curiously at her father, and Skye waited, worried. She was worried to death about her son - she didn't know how she could have just fallen asleep and let him wander off like that. She felt like a horrible mother, but she couldn't afford to feel sorry for herself now - all she could do now was try and take care of her children the best that she could and watch over her pack.

Suddenly, her mate straightened from his position and looked her in the eye - he looked at her for a long time, and she looked at him. His eyes then wandered to Robert, and then Erzulie - they looked at each other for a while before he looked at Skye again, stating that he had to go find Nathaniel. He grabbed handfuls of things and bustled around, taking the things he thought would need - he then pushed past Skye towards the entrance of the doorway and looked at her, taking her chin and telling her that it'll be alright.

"I hope so," she whispered - it was all she could say.

She stepped out of his house with her children to look as Bangle walked over to her house, no doubt to get more things that he would need. He shouted that he would have to take Jack, and that was fine - Jack was strong and young, perfect for this sort of thing. If she needed a horse, they had acquired a great number in the time that they had an influx of members. She padded over to him, who was now in her house, and looked at him with concern.

"Be careful," she said. "I love you. Come back soon.." With our son, she finished silently in her head.

The multicolored male heard her as she walked through the entrance of her house, but he scrambled to take what necessities he could and didn't bother to look up. Everything from food to blankets, to tools and furs, and even little crafts made should he need to bribe information out of wolves; it was all packed in baskets or bags. Only when Bangle deemed himself finished did he inspect everything, and finally catch the red-headed female's words.

Orange eyes looked towards her, near the entrance, embracing her children as if she were afraid they'd leave her too. She was concerned - and she blamed herself, he knew she did. Her voice was heavy with sadness, and he even hinted doubt in her final words, but Bangle was not entirely new to the lands.

Hitching his bag over his shoulder, his arm draped around a pack basket, he made his way towards the entrance, to Skye. He briefly touched noses with her, and though he too was concerned about their son, like always he tried to make the best out of the situation by grinning his way through it. "Never yeh worry," The coywolf said, offering her a childish grin. "'Thaniel's young, but he's boisterous, jus' like 'is father." He winked, trying to sound reassuring in a comical way, as he brushed past the three and around the house.

Jack lifted his head, and tossed it in greeting. He was slightly put off by the sudden weight on his back as Bangle hoisted the pack basket over his rump, and began to tie it down. Bangle stroked the stallion's side, knowing they'd be getting to know one another a lot better on this trip, and the coywolf only hoped the horse didn't get injured in any way. Bangle was no medic, and though he had remedies of mysterious qualities which he talked others into taking, he wasn't sure if they'd be good enough for a horse. Skye would never forgive him, either, if he returned without Nathaniel and and injured horse too.

When everything was in place, including the creature's halter and saddle, Bangle inspected the creature for any wounds or faults. His hand roved over the beast's strong legs, around the side and along his back to the withers. Jack snorted, but gave no signs as to an injury of any kind, and the craftsman grinned. "Ready t' ride, Jacky?" He said towards the horse, though the coywolf hadn't spent much time with the horse to really communicate with it. A nicker from the creature was all he needed, as Bangle hoisted himself up on the creature and positioned himself properly.

Bangle led the horse back towards the front of the house, and looked at Skye. "I'll be back soon as'I can." His eyes roamed from her towards the children in her arms, and his ears flew backwards for a moment. "Stay 'ere case 'e comes back." It was all he could say, even though Skye could go nowhere else when she had to keep charge of the pack. Then, using the horse's lead ropes, Bangle steered the creature towards the forest in the south, and applied the right amount of pressure to get the horse to gallop. "Hee-yah!" The coywolf said into the air, and soon the two were out of sight.
