Feedback on future character
#1
Firstly yes I am aware that I'm currently about 4 weeks and 25 posts away from actually applying for a second character, just wanting to get some feedback on this ahead of time.

Anyway here we go.

The thing with me is that when I make characters for stuff, I tend to go a wee bit overboard and end up with lots of ideas which I have to choose one of to develop. Since Souls lets you have multiple characters I've been fiddling about with this character in my mind for a little while, and I'm posting it here to get some feedback. Think of this as a first draft of the character.

Anyways, I was thinking like George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men (which is a book that I loved) with this, Large and Stupid coupled with Small and Smart.

For those who don’t know what a Caucasian Shepherd is, they are a VERY large breed of dog.

Sizing may be a bit out, the idea of this was to go for gentle giant, and as you can see from that picture Caucasians are very big, but I was guessing a bit putting that into Optime.

Name: Leo Hawshawk
Gender: Male
Age: 5
Luperci: Yes
Species: 50% German Shepherd(Canis lupus familiaris), 25% Caucasian Ovcharka (Canis lupus familiaris), 25% Coyote (Canis latrans)

Personality: Leo has one defining characteristic, this characteristic is obvious over all others and is a very noticeable part of his personality.

He is monumentally stupid.

Kind-natured, naïve, gentle and thick as a brick Leo is the kind of dog that is easy to take advantage of. He has a simplistic childlike mindset and is desperate for approval; he will do pretty much anything for a smile and a few kind words.

Leo is not an aggressive dog by nature He adores children and enjoys looking after less intelligent animals, such as cattle.

Despite his general lack of intelligence Leo is surprisingly self aware; he is aware of his stupidity and how it impacts his choices in life, which is why he has chosen the profession of a travelling warrior despite his kind nature. He doesn't enjoy fighting but it is something that he is good at and the best way for him to make a living.

Fighting is one thing that Leo understands very well. Over the time he has spent as a mercenary Leo has learned several fighting styles in his Optime form that take advantage of his large size and is an effective combatant, able to overpower most opponents he comes across. He dislikes using his weapons and if possible will attempt to end a fight before it begins, using his fearsome performance and a healthy dose of false aggression to scare an opponent down.

Getting much of his personality from his Ovcharka heritage, Leo is a fearless dog and shows immense loyalty to those who earn it, in this case his travelling partner Fenswick. However he lacks the ovcharka's typical aggression and mistrust of strangers, making him somewhat atypical.. His years of imprisonment have left him with a dislike of whips and chains, though he will react with aggression and not fear to these. He also abhors any violence towards children of any kind.

Appearance: Leo is an immensely large dog. With two large dog breeds mixing in his blood and an unusually large size for even his family, Leo has an impressive size and bulk to him.

In his Lupus form Leo stands about 3 foot tall and just over 5 foot long not including his tail. Weighing in at 170lb he has a bulky, muscle filled build. Leo's appearance is a mix of his various heritages. From his German Shepherd heritage he has inherited their skull structure and characteristic ears, his coyote blood has given him larger than average feet and a long bushy tail and finally his Caucasian Ovcharka blood provides his size, muscular build and thick, powerful muzzle.

Leo's coloration is mainly tan, with black fur around his ears, tail, upper back and stomach.

Leo's Secui form is similarly proportioned to his Lupus form but has a lot more muscle mass, weighing in at 230lb. When in his Secui form the fur around his upper torso and head becomes much thicker, forming a mane of sorts. In addition to this his muzzle becomes elongated and his legs nearly double in width to accommodate the extra muscle. His black fur is more prevalent in this form and most of the newly formed mane is black with dashes of tan. This is the form that he will use if he needs to fight in a four-legged state, though he prefers his Optime form for that.

And finally is the form that Leo spends most of his time in, the Optime form. Standing at 8 foot tall and weighing 330lb Leo's Optime form is impressive. When in Optime Leo's colouring reverts back to mainly tan and his generally thick fur thins out into a sleeker appearance. Leo's muzzle in Optime form is long and sports a fearsome set of teeth.

Leo has a fair amount of scarring on his body, with many nicks and scratches along his arms and chest and one scar across his right eye. Usually these cannot be seen well due to the thick fur of his Lupus and Secui forms. The exception to this is his back. His years of imprisonment have left his back a mess of whip scars which leaves the fur there very patchy, those they are not immediately noticeable in Lupus and Secui form. When in Optime his scars are very noticeable as there is practically no fur on his back left from the scars.

Leo does not often wear clothing. The only noticeable pieces of clothing he wears are a pair of lain metal bracelets and a belt which carries his mace. The mace is a weapon that he obtained from a travelling weaponsmith in return for acting as an escort.

History:

Leo was born into slavery, the child of two slaves in a violent pack made up primarily of Coyote. While his parents had been crippled to make them manageable the coyote took advantage of Leo's young age and stupidity, managing to convince the young dog that the metal bracelets they put on him somehow prevented him from disobeying them or running away, it never occurred to Leo to test these boundaries and his parents never figured out how the coyote kept Leo under control so this state of affairs continued until Leo's third year of life, when his parents died from malnutrition.

Shortly after the death of his parents Leo met a cat called Fenswick, who was brought into the pack with alongside a mortally wounded wolf. The small cat was unusual in that it was able to communicate in High Speech and it convinced Leo to hide it from the Coyote.

The two quickly become friends and the cat, a quick thinking and intelligent animal, figured out how the Coyote were keeping Leo controlled. By continually and gently goading Leo into accidentally disobeying orders Fenswick managed to convince Leo that the Coyote were lying about the bracelets, and the two fled the pack one night.

For the next two years the pair existed in an odd partnership. Working as a mercenary allowed Leo to keep himself well fed despite his lack of skill at hunting and Fernswicks wits prevented anybody taking advantage of Leo. The two continued in this manner, but over time Leo began to become depressed; his breed was not meant to be alone but was meant to have a pack to support and live with.

With this in mind the two started to head north, seeking out the less heavily populated areas in an attempt to find a pack where Leo could be happy, it was this search that led them to souls.

NPC: Fenswick
Age: 6
Species: Wildcat

Appearance: Small and thin build, silvery grey fur.

Fenswick is a cat originally from the Yorkshire county in England. He has spent most of his life in captivity, originally being the pet of an adventurous wolf that travelled the world until his death at the hands of Leo's original pack. This has led to Fenswick learning the canine High Speech, in addition to gaining a healthy amount of world experience.

Fanswick has a sharp mind and is able to quickly process events. This makes him a valuable partner when travelling, especially for someone as dim as Leo.

Fenswick has a sharp tongue by nature, and the sense of security offered by having the unwavering loyalty of a dog like Leo has reinforced this over the two years they have been together, with Fenswick unashamedly hiding behind Leo when he feels threatened. He has a sarcastic and often inappropriate sense of humour and can be quite cruel on occasion. Despite this he generally cares for Leo and looks out for the dogs best interests.

Fenswick and Leo have an odd relationship and despite the differences between the two they rely heavily on each other to survive. Leo provides Fenswick with protection and food, while Fenswick provides Leo with an educated outlook on events and a way of keeping track of things. While Leo listens heavily to Fenswick's advice Fenswick will generally cave to Leo's decisions.

I really like the inspiration for this! I loved Of Mice and Men myself, and the combination of two characters can really be interesting. ^^

Leo, I think, is a bit too big and powerful - I know that he is supposed to be, but there is a large influx of extremely large characters - maybe cut him down to 8 feet to be more realistic (for his Optime form), and instead of killing with his bare hands easily, he could be quite strong and yet not that strong? Just some suggestions for realism - I adore his personality and idea! I also like the idea of Fenwick (since he's a wildcat, his using High Speech is fine) and their history is pretty neat.

One question - would Leo be the character and Fenwick the NPC? If so, then they can join a pack - however, if Fenwick were the character and Leo the NPC, it'd be difficult finding Fenwick a place in a pack. ^^ Just my two cents; nice job with the characters, they're very intersting! Big Grin

I would suggest looking over our dog guide, as the breed you are intending to use is likely extinct.

Maybe, however, he has the genetic lineage of the shepherd, but mixed with something else--a smaller dog that would be hardier, like a spitx breed. Malamutes, for example, can be very large. I'm going to echo the idea of making him not so big, especially because larger animals don't live as long, especially dogs.

Interesting concept, however! Very curious to see it played out.

Thanks for the comments, tweaked his appearance a bit and messed with his heritage =3

@Sunny - Edited some things based on your recommendations, Leo would be the Character and Fenswick the NPC, since like you said getting a cat accepted into a pack would be difficult, and i'm wanting to have this character join a pack.

@Mel Actually I think there's a fair chance that the Ovcharka are still around, they were originally a wild dog breed and they tick quite a few of the boxes for havign survived (Military Dogs, Strong pack Instincts, Intelligent). However you're right in saying that he would probably be a mix; any Purebred Ovcharka's are going to most likely be around Europe/Asia where the breed originated, so I've made him a hybrid.
