ooc: the mountains

The silvery fellow had been crossing the mountains forever. He had been so relieved when the downward slope began about his paws that he almost let out a howl out of pure joy. Generally he was of a quiet and brooding type but since he had left his pack to find new grounds and a home all his own it seemed a weight had been lifted off his shoulders for the time being. One he knew sooner or later that he would have to return to, but this time it would be a pack of his choosing, if they would have him, and one where every other face was not one related to him in some way. That would be a treat indeed.

The older male stood on the slight outcrop overlooking these new lands and wondered just what was out there. The scent of packs, of canines and other such creatures reached his nose, but for the moment he was not interested in investigating the claimed lands. For now he just wanted to be free and live a little, learn a little and figure out for himself where he belonged. Chained down at the moment was not where he belonged, that was one thing he did know.

Sorry it took a while to respond. I've been sick.

Chasing prey was a difficult task when one was on their own and so tired. Kiara had been living with Shiloh and Sarain for a few days now, but taking care of a puppy was very stressful. The she-wolf had just been promoted in rank and already she was fulfilling her duties as the puppy's caretaker. To help feed the young pup, Kiara had begun to lactate instead of her surrogate mother who was unable to. The weight of milk and exhaustion slowed her down as she attempted to catch the elusive hare before her.

Pushing her muscles to their limit, the arctic wolf's paws slapped the ground creating a flurry of dust in her wake. Kiara panted as she made a lunge for the rabbit, only to grab the air where it once was. Twisting her body she followed the rabbit up the mountain side and out of the Ichika territory. Still, she ran through the mountains trying to catch the food she desperately needed. But alas, the rabbit's hide grew even more distant until it simply disappeared into the brush. Using her sensitive nose, Kiara tracked the rabbit even farther through the forest. Without slowing down, Kiara traced the scent until she reached an outcropping that overlooked Ichika no Ho-en.

To Kiara's surprise there was an unknown male that was staring down at the expanse of land before him. Kiara stopped in her tracks and looked at the strange male in confusion. He did not smell of the pack and was certainly not someone she had seen around. Kiara raised her tail a little, but made no move to be aggressive. Instead, she addressed the stranger calmly using the packs traditional greeting. "Namaste. Um, it certainly is beautiful. That's...I a, apologize if I have disturbed you." She gave the older male a slight smile, but, oh how tired she was.

He knew he was not tresspassing but at the sight of the woman who arrived and her slight dominate approach he knew lands were probably nearby. He nodded slightly to the beast and yet didn't budge from his placement. They were on equal ground and he didn't plan on giving in or giving up space when it was not hers to take. When the greeting came he smiled slightly and agreed. "Yes, the view is quite lovely...and no apology needed from a sight like you..." He knew he was being horrible, flirting and teasing as he did but what was the point of being wild and free if he couldn't enjoy it while it lasted.

His deep blue eyes with their flecks and rings of gold watched the woman with slight humor in them. The scent of a pack clung to her but he didn't know just how far she had come to stand so near, yet so far away. He raised a brow and took a step towards her as he asked. "Would you mind walking with a new stranger to these lands and share what you know with an ignorant beast?" he gave his biggest saddest puppy eyes as he teased the woman so horribly.

Dominance towards strangers was not a practice Kiara often followed, and even in this case she only showed slight dominance because of their proximity to the pack lands. Her intention was not to drive the stranger away, especially because he was not trespassing. The rush of adrenaline was still pumping through her veins and the strangers presence had caught her by surprise. Her stance was not aggressive, merely curious and questioning. Kiara was not aware that loners often traveled through these lands because she was still very new to them herself.

Kiara was drawn to his eyes. The flecks and rings that resided within their blue expanse enthralled the young wolf's mind. Their beauty rivaled, if not exceeded, her own brilliant sapphire eyes. Looking at this male was like looking at a work of art. As the older male spoke of the view below, Kiara couldn't help but smile. She turned her head and admired the view before them. However, the serenity of the moment quickly abated as the males second comment arose.

The arctic wolf was young and inexperience when it came to men and flirting. As the flirtatious words flowed from the older males tongue, Kiara froze. Her tail dropped immediately and her ear's flicked back. A sight like her? How was she supposed to respond to such a straightforward and open comment? Kiara turned one nervous eye towards the male before she was forced to look away out of sheer embarrassment. If Kiara were human, she would be blushing from head to toe. "Um... thank you." The snow wolf's voice was small and shy. She kept glancing at the male, unsure of what to do or how to respond.

As the loner approached Kiara she began to shift around nervously. C'mon girl. Get a grip. The arctic wolf silently chided herself. Her father's voice floated in her head. Wolves were supposed to be proud and calm. Such nervous behavior was unbecoming of a wolf. With a deep breath the snow wolf turned to face the loner head on. She would not back down from such a challenge; no matter how much she wanted to crawl under a rock. "I would be more than happy to walk with you stranger. My name is Kiara. What's yours?"

The older male loved when he had the women twitterpatted. He smiled as he watched her reaction, the whole demenor of the woman changed and it amused him so. His tail wagged slightly as his eyes sparkled. He gave her a wink and a smile as he teased. "No my lady, thank you.." he said, as he came to a pause before her. He waited a moment for the woman to decide if she would take his offer and it didn't take her long to ultimately decide, for which he was glad.

The loner didn't want to explore alone when there was such fine company to be had. A smile broke over his maw once more when she accepted the offer and stood before him. His eyes brighten as he chuckled. "The name is Thoirni... and where shall we go this fine day my lady" he asked as he took a step forward eagerly.

He's making fun of me! Kiara felt her pride as it deflated like a popped ballon. Every word Thoirní said threw Kiara for a loop and his every action made her heat beat faster. The arctic wolf felt as if she had been running for a very long time and was approaching her limit. It took a conscious effort to prevent herself from squirming. Every inch of Kiara's skin prickled and crawled, yet the sensation was not totally unpleasant. Thoirní's attention was unexpected, but not entirely unwelcome. After all, Kiara was young.

Thoirní's smile thrilled her, and should could not help but smile back. When the Thoirní drew even closer to Kiara she couldn't help but take a few skittish steps back. The nervous movement almost caused Kiara to fall right off the overhang. The arctic wolf yelped in surprise as her back paw hit nothing but air and scrambled back up to solid ground. In her attempts to reach safety Kiara nearly nocked into the silver male and landed only a few inches away. Her sapphire eyes met Thoirní's sparkling gaze and she simply said the first thing that came to mind. "How's the beach sound?"

Kiara mentally cursed herself even as she said those words. The snow wolf's last trip to the beach was not the most pleasant of experiences, making the ocean her least favorite form of water. Growing up next to a large river had given Kiara a unique love for water. But nearly drowning in a rip tide had given her an equally unique distaste for the ocean. Still, the open beach would be better than these confining forests. Kiara wanted to distance herself a little from the Thoirní. His presence undermined her thinking and caused her head to spin.

Every action called for a reaction and every one she graced him with was more amusing than the last. He couldn't help but raise both brows high as she yelped and nearly landed in his lap when he had moved closer to her. This dance of the flesh, teasing and taunting, discovering once self in their own skin was a challenge he loved. Long ago he had grown confident in his abilities ahd now instead of squirming and stumbling along he marched to the beat of his own drum and in time had the ladies dancing as well. It was an art, a fine art and he loved every graceful stroke.

There was a hint of a smile once more when the fine lady suggested they seek out the ocean view. He smiled sweetly and bowed, "After you, my lovely morning glory..." he said. Accepting the new change in scenery and knowing that he could continue to play the poor girl like a fiddle til her strings were wound so tight she couldn't see straight or even take a step without tripping over her own paws, though he didn't think it would take much at all at this rate.

Kiara's poor heart was fluttering like the wings of a hummingbird. What could the innocent girl do, she was at a lost for words and actions. Kiara did the only thing she dared to, started off in the direction of the ocean. The pair was about an hours walk to the beach and all the while Kiara was sure to be on edge. Thoirní had the she-wolf dancing perfectly to his tune and Kiara knew it. The arctic wolf was never the most dominant of characters, but she hated the idea of being dragged along by her ears.

Kiara walked cautiously, as if the ground beneath her paws was a pit of snakes ready to strike at any moment. Several times she attempted to say something before stopping short. Nothing the alabaster woman said seemed to make sense. Mostly she commented on the weather or on a plant they passed by. Her head was jumbled and confused. After about 20 minutes Kiara decided she had, had enough of this jittery behavior. All the girl needed to do was threat this male as she would any other stranger. A small smile broke across Kiara's lips as the idea quickly enveloped her mind.

She turned to the male with a glint mischief in her sapphire eyes. Her brilliant eyes challenging Thoirní, daring him, and even making fun of him. It was time the male ran at her pace. Without another word, Kiara flattened her ears and took off through the forest. Her white form streaked through the trees and down the mountain. Her paws seemed to float on air, barely touching the ground as she flew. Every fiber, every muscle in her body stretched and condensed in the fluid movement of running. The white wolf's goal was the sea, and she would not stop until she had raced Thoirní all the way to its sandy beaches. Kiara let out a happy bark as the wind flew past her face.

Thoirni lavished in the fact that he had her wrapped around one little toe. His eyes shimmered and danced as he strolled along beside her, catching every little moment she turned to him to try and offer a word of conversation, and granting her that sly little smile every time she baulked and turned her gaze away. His devilish grin was followed by a chuckle as he let his paws dance along to his own little tune, prancing along the way. He almost didn't catch the small smile that broke across the lips of the fair woman, but at the last second he turned to give her another dashing smile..and in that instant the shy woman took off at a ground eating pace, leaving him in the dust for a moment before he laughed outright and followed suit.

His sun shot orbs met her sapphire eyes that were just as lovely as he stretched his long limbs to pace along beside her. His tongue lulled out of his maw happily as she breezed past him and down the path along the way to the sea. He let his guard down and his form spread out to it's full extent as he let out a musical howl of pure joy. He enjoyed the view from behind the woman and yet the beast in him wanted to race as well. He bared his fangs slightly and accepted the challenge as he sprang after her.

His oversized paws thundered on the ground as they raced through the woods and down trails that were hap-hazardous. Their speeds were reckless as he slowly drew up upon the beauty before him. He granted her a bark of warning as he drew alongside her shoulder. The grounds underpaw shifted to a sandier variety as the salt rich air greeted them. He drew even eye to eye with the woman before he nudged into her slightly, his eyes dancing. Slowly he let his pace dwindle as he let the woman outpace him again. He would let her win, but he'd enjoy the view the whole time...

She did it. Now, things were moving at her pace. No longer would she dance to Thoirní's tune. This entire encounter had caused her to be unusually jittery and shy. But the bone chilling wind that flew past her face as she raced down the mountain towards the ocean had a sobering effect. Although her thick winter fur protected the arctic wolf from most of the cold, she could still feel it a little bit against her cheeks where her fur was thinnest. Still, Kiara focused on one thing, running. Every paw was placed with purpose, and her muscles tensed and relaxed at command.

It wan't long before the silver male's footsteps could be heard be behind Kiara's own fleeting paws. The thrill of racing filled Kiara, a feeling that seemed to be mutual. Kiara couldn't help but echo Thoirní's musical howl with her own voice as the pair tore down the mountain. For most of the way, the snow wolf seemed to have the upper hand, with Thoirní just at her tail. Once, Thoirní had bumped into her a little, making Kiara all the more determined to best him. His eye's shimmered a little, but the fire in Kiara's sapphire orbs would not be extinguished by such simple means. The alabaster woman was not about to let this showy male beat her in a running competition.

Soon, the line of tree's broke and gave way to the sandy beaches and still Kiara ran. She ran all the way to the waves, stopping only when her paws were wet. The young wolf couldn't help but recall her incident on the peninsula, the memory making her hesitate. Kiara loved water, but she did not love the ocean. The waves licked at her paws, inviting her in. Kiara's large head swiveled to look at Thoirní who had also breached the tree line. Her tail remained in the air, but was no longer wagging. The alabaster wolf looked back out one last time before turning her back to the sea. She trotted over to Thoirní, her tongue hanging loose and her breathing hard. "I won that round." She said triumphantly before flopping down onto the sand to pant. Kiara refused to look at the sea again. It was both tempting and frightening.

Thoirni smiled as he caught up to the woman, his breathing was rapid and his heart beat quickly within his chest as he shook his whole body, letting his wind rippled fur fall back into place as the woman spoke. A soft chuckle fell from his lips as he admitted. "Aye, Lady. You won that round, that's true.. but don't expect me to be such a gentleman next time.." his eyes sparkled as he flopped down beside her, giving him the time to catch his breath as he watched the woman for a moment, his eyes soon following hers to the sea as he watched it quietly.

The soft roll of the ocean and the panting of the two creatures was the only sound for a long while until the grey silver male contemplated the wash of the salty water and the creature beside him. He wasn't use to the wolves of other packs being so inviting. Even when he had met others in strange unclaimed territories they had always played some game of aggression and dominance. Though the games grew old at least he had understood them, this new welcoming of strangers from strange packs was something he could not comprehend.

He finally turned back towards the woman and asked. "Will your pack miss you if you are gone too long?" He didn't know how her pack worked, but he knew if he was gone too long and too often from his old pack they often would come down hard upon the male. He smiled at the memory from the past, knowing that he had been let off easier than some of the other pack members still, being the son of the leaders.

Together they sat, a pair of wolves enjoying the beach and the wonderful weather. The sound of waves was calming and the salty smell of the ocean filled her nostrils. Thoirní's defeat put Kiara in a good mood, and her wagging tail showed it. A small spray of sand was thrown into the air with each beat of her tail. The last time Kiara was at the beach she spent the following days washing sand out of her coat. The small grains stuck to everything, but they felt wonderful against her fur as she lay with Thoirní. It was still worth the trouble.

They pair sat in silence for a long time, both of them content and panting. Their race had taken a lot of energy out of them, and the rest was nice. Thoirní was the first to speak. His question was unfortunately correct. Kiara would be missed if she stayed to long. After all there was a young puppy waiting for her back home and would most likely be hungry and eager to play. Kiara gave a sigh, but was incredibly reluctant to move. "Unfortunately, your right. Although I would love to just lay here for the next few hours, I have a puppy to attend to."

Rather than standing, Kiara simply rolled over and allowed her paws to dangle in the air. She didn't want to go after she finally managed to relax around the silver male. The snow wolf had not spent a lot of time around such males, and she wanted to learn more about him. Kiara was in the mood to play, but her sense of responsibility was nagging at her. The two conflicting emotions struggled for control, and all the while Kiara sat and stared up at the clouds. Eventually responsibility won and Kiara was forced to stand and shake the sand off. "Well, time to go I guess. It was nice meeting you, and I hope to see you again." Kiara turned to Thoirní and after a small bow she turned to leave.
