Stalking Prey

OOC

It had been three weeks since she'd seen Frodo. Heading out to where they'd held their last lesson, Terra stood on a small hill looking over the meadow. There was the rabbit warren she'd hunted at, now covered in snow. The rabbits hadn't grown any less in number, though their white coat made it more difficult to pick them out. She'd killed prey for the first time by actual design instead of a happy accident there. Granted, Terra hadn't improved much since. She could take down rabbits with obvious defects without much difficulty, but they were hard to find, and the cleverer ones still evaded her grasp. Today that would be fixed hopefully.

Lifting her head Terra howled, a mournful pitch that danced and weaved like a coyote's, though longer and more silken than it would be if she was full blooded. Her ears pricked forward, waiting for the possible reply. Would Frodo have remembered? Even if he had, would he have come out? The snow was much deeper, forcing Terra into her secui form to battle through the depths. In lupine her movement was much slower, catching in the deeper drifts. She was learning some tricks for picking out shallower places and the like, but as this was the first winter she could properly recall her knowledge of it was rather small, so secui form served her best.

Big Grin

He hadn't really had much to do lately. Just lounging around in his pack, hunting occasionally, Frodo had become somewhat lazy. And then he remembered Terra.

Having it been three weeks since they'd last met, he had hurridly packed up courage for the meeting and then had scurried away. He was a bit late when he arrived on the edge of the reserve, cautious and sniffing everything in site, looking for any scent of Terra. It was still early in the day, but he couldn't help but wonder about the younger female, and wonder if she was alright, had been eating well, and would have remembered like he had. Sure enough, soon came her wolfish, but more coyote-like howl. He smiled at the call of the hybrid and tilted back his head, emitting a low, mournful song that matched hers in the way it summoned for the hunt but there was a hint of sadness in it. He wasn't nesscaracily despressed at the moment, but every since a couple of months in solitude and longing, he had been broken, and since tragic events had passed, his howls were usually full of built up emotion.

He was in his secui form already for the moment. Frodo had fattened up among his days in the pack and was no longer gaunt and restless. He was still skinny, but now a healthy skinny, with muscle and an altogether lean, athletic structure. The whip bruises on his back from where he had been beaten were all but faded away, and his eyes were brighter and greener than ever. He sniffed out Terra and soon there she was, quite near where they had their first hunting lesson. He noted she was in secui too, and was glad of it as well. His pack-brother Light had showed him many a trick in secui. Terra, my friend! he exclaimed, bounding over to her with nuzzles and play-bites, as only a wolf could greet a friend. He valued their friendship, and was content with the way they went about things. Anxious for their next lesson, he first noted she seemed more well fed than last time, and attempted to make a summary of her skill before they moved on for the lesson. Doin' alright? Practicin' good, skipper?

OOC

It wasn't long before another call answered her own. Tail wagging Terra listened to the deep mournful howl, so different from the light dancing call of coyotes. Excited she sat up, watching for him on the horizon. Soon enough Frodo came barreling over the snow, his secui form plowing through everything. In lupine and optime form Terra had been smaller than him, and had thought that maybe in secui she might have stood a chance. That was dashed though as she was absolutely dwarfed by his thick padded fur and muscles. She looked even smaller than normal next to him.

His exuberant greeting was met with licks and nips of her own, Terra growling playfully as she tugged on his ear. It was so good to see him again. He had been eating well, and the scent of his pack hung heavy. In fact, it almost smelled like he'd been eating nothing but fat deer for the past while! Tail wagging so hard it appeared about to fall off Terra answered. I'm doing well! I've caught more rabbits, though it's mostly because they're too slow. Winter's been kind this year. There had been an abundance of dead frozen animals for Terra to scavenge when her hunting skills fell short of the mark, giving plenty for her to bring back to her pack as well. At least when she could, not being particularly strong. What about you? Scarfing down deer? She teased lightly, rubbing against him.

word count- 406

Frodo was very happy at the fact he was bigger than Terra. Possibly because of her coyote blood, his form seemed much bigger than hers when in reality they were about the same height. Frodo was very small for a wolf, and most others towered over him - especially the males - so he was glad that for a change he was big! Though he didn't tower over her in height, the mere fact he was male meant he had a great deal of muscle...his form was lean though, and not bulky. More a sprinter-athlete kinda guy more than a uber-strong wrestler.

He met her with a soft grunt, and her greeting made him feel happy. Frodo grinned from ear to ear, giving her a final nuzzle before parting away. Oh, how glad he was to know about her well being! He felt proud of her, that she'd managed to go from absolutely no training heard of to someone who hunted rabbits successfully. The fact that she got them when they were slow made no difference, and it was of no matter. That was what her and his kind were for- to eliminate the weak so that the strong could live on. It would be chaotic without the luperci and other major predators that lurked around today. That's great, that is! Practice makes perfect, I've always said! winter had indeed been kind. The snow around was no longer fresh but abundant to say the least, and it would be a while before it shifted. Frodo could only hope that winter would be as cruel as it had been so far - to the prey, at least.

I've been dandy. he continued, wagging his tail briefly. Frodo had always found it easy to hunt and generally look after himself, and the past couple of weeks had been no different. Winter was like a vacation of sorts, for the young lad. But come, you. 'Cuz I smell reindeer, and I tells you what, they're not gonna be stayin' in one place fer long. with that, he leant into her for a second before bounding off suddenly, on strong, albeit half-hearted paws. Recently, his hunting methods had become almost cocky, for now it came down to it, he caught almost everything he wanted to catch. But he deemed himself responsible for Terra in his teachings, and today, that would be different. He had his head in the game.

OOC sorry. forgot to track and forgot about it

A lot of Frodo's funny way of speaking was gone, making it plenty easier for Terra to understand what he was saying, not just following the gist of it. Her tail wagged lightly as he complimented her on her practice. It wasn't really practice for Terra, who only hunted when she got hungry, but she had passed up some fairly fresh corpses to chase rabbits she wasn't too sure she'd catch. Terra had stayed clear of the hogs though. Last time had been more than enough to show her that she wasn't ready to take it on. Maybe after she designed a trick for defeating it Terra would go again, but for now she was taking her pork already dead.

The friendly wolf rubbed into her shoulder, and Terra happily followed him. Ahead were large deer like creatures, their antlers enormous. Terra had lived in an area where they didn't pass through, so this was her first time seeing the great beasts. Her paws beat against the ground, giving her a fair advantage. She wouldn't be slow moving because of her size today. She felt powerful, and more than happy to hunt alongside her friend. Studying the herd Terra veered towards one that had gotten near the edge, snapping playfully. As it scuttled back to the rest of the group Terra came back round to Frodo, ears up and tail wagging.
