A Tangled Web We Weave

The dark-pelted luperci woman strolled through the forest, her feet crunching softly through the snow. Her once-short hair now touched her shoulders in a hiccup of loose curls, the lightness of it slowly fading and growing out to give way to her auburn tangles once more. A short huff of breath displaced the reddened bangs that hung over her bi-colored eyes, and she hugged herself in order to keep warm. She could very well be huddled up inside the manor back in Crimson Dreams territory right now, but a handful of choices - whether ill- or well-placed she had not yet decided - had landed her in the wilderness without a home once more, and she was yet again faced with the challenge that all wanderers knew too well. Food...that was the first thing, however, that was on her checklist of things to find. A home could wait.

Blind often found herself redirecting her thoughts, as they seemed to like to dwell on her spunky hybrid whom she had not seen in far too long. She hoped her well, of course, for the alternative was far too painful to think on for even a second. She ran her slender fingers through her mess of hair and sighed, wondering if she'd ever run into the dear girl again; their departure was far too abrupt the last time they met. Her nose tilted upward, as if hoping to catch her scent on the wind or even hear it whisper of the hybrid's whereabouts. But no such luck...she was left to wander another day in question.

The trees seemed to huddle together and then depart again in a breath of open space as the she-wolf trekked further and further. How long she had been wandering this day, she knew not. But her sore feet could tell her that it had been long enough. Taking a seat on a toppled tree trunk, she pushed around the snow below her toes and allowed her tired body to rest. She looked around, enjoying the general splendor of the forest, until her thoughts were disrupted by a smell carried on a breeze...Vesper? No, it was nothing more than a rabbit frittering about through the sparkling mounds of snow. She watched it carefully; the fluffy thing seemed to almost disappear among the whiteness, its own pelt nearly identical in color. Her tail flicked anxiously as she tried to keep from drooling; perhaps she was hungry after all. Nudging away from her perch, she concentrated on shortening her figure until she stood on all fours in lupus form, and then lowered to the ground to stalk the unsuspecting creature.

OOC here.

Terra had been tracking this rabbit for quite some time. It had a slight limp in it's left leg, making it slow enough that she was fairly confident of having a chance to take it down. She made sure to stay downwind of the rabbit, it's scent flowing to her rather than the other way around. Her paws fidgeted as she watched, eager to take it down. She would have to soon. Terra didn't have much patience, and while she had eaten recently, it had all been burned off with her games, leaving her starving again.

About to take a pounce Terra's concentration was cut by that of a nearby wolf. Her lips drew back in a silent snarl before her attention shifted back to the rabbit. She'd need to move even faster now, before the rabbit realized the danger it was in. Putting on a burst of speed Terra rushed out. Squealing the rabbit twisted, trying to escape. Just like she'd hoped though, the bad leg slowed it down. Teeth snapped at the neck, and Terra secured her prize. Viciously she shook her head until the neck snapped. Her kill claimed Terra let out a short yip of triumph before burrowing into it. One ear trained on the wolf, hoping it wasn't expecting a share of the kill.

Welcome!

Blind's tail twitched anxiously as she crept up on the little creature, her mouth beginning to water as she watched it bounce about. She could see the tiny muscles moving beneath its fur as they worked together to permit the rabbit mobility, and her thoughts began to wander toward the possibility of those muscles disintegrating between her teeth and then sliding down her throat. Her tail wagged, if only for a moment, as she continued to creep forward, her bi-colored eyes locked on her prey.

Just as she was about to pounce, a tawny-pelted creature burst forth from the underbrush and snatched the rabbit right out from under Blind's nose. She froze, watching in horror as the canine began to devour what should have been HER meal. She straightened up to her full height, a snarl rippling through her body as the canine's eyes met hers...and then she stopped. This canine clearly had coyote in her, just like Vesper. She wondered for a moment if maybe...just maybe they knew each other. But this coyote didn't smell like her dear hybrid friend. Her snarl returned almost immediately, as if she were now offended that she had NOT turned out to be her friend in addition to her stealing her lunch. What do you think you're doing?! she barked. That's mine!

OOC Thanks!

A snarl came her way from the wolf, met by Terra's own teeth bared at her. The wolf looked ragged, worn from living life in the wilderness. Poor creature probably didn't have a pack. That was a shame. Terra still wasn't giving up her food though. The snarl stopped, and Terra believing their business finished took another bite. This was really good rabbit. Terra was glad she'd caught it, especially since she hadn't smelled any corpses in the area.

The snarl returned full blown though, this time accompanied by words. Terra straightened up, looked in the naive wolf's eyes, and laughed. Yours? What hole have you been living under? This is neutral land, girl. No laws here. Go back to your family. You're obviously too weak to survive out here. Hers. What a laugh. Terra had been stalking that rabbit before this wolf did, and had done the kill. It was Terra's by every right except one, and that was that she wasn't necessarily the strongest.

The words of the female cut through to the she-wolf's heart like a knife, and she had an awful time convincing herself that this was not her dear friend suddenly turned on her. She shook her head, her thoughts no longer allowed to distract her, and then she straightened up to her full height. It was not an act of dominance, but simply a feign of indifference until finally she sat down in the snow and watched the hybrid finish her meal. Her tail tucked around her legs - if she had been in her optime form it would have been her hands clasped in her lap instead, anything to portray patience. And she did wait, until the carcass was licked clean and the girl's attention could be directed elsewhere.

She could have fought the canine for the kill, but Blind had never been much of a fighter. Even in play she always succumbed to the will of the other, and the lessons the scarred female had taught her so long ago had been lost to time. She could have retorted with words too, attempting to humble the girl with the simple fact that she had lost all of her blood family to insanity and death. But she knew better than to play the 'pity-me' card when face to face with a stranger as feisty as this one. So instead she remained calm, watching the girl almost with interest as she finished off her meal. Finally she spoke again, these words more gentle than the last and carrying the air of playfulness: You don't mess around when it comes to food, do you? She chuckled then, her mis-matched eyes reflecting the sparkle of the snow.

OOC here.

The wolf turned to act indifferent now, before sitting down and watching her eat. It took a bit of work for Terra to convince herself that the wolf wasn't waiting for a chance to steal her meal, and that it was perfectly fine to keep eating. Returning to the rabbit Terra gulped down large pieces of it, chewing on a few choice bones before backing away. A bit of meat still clung to it, but that was for foxes and the like. It wouldn't be enough for a wolf, even if one was hungry. Terra turned her head and watched the wolf as she spoke again. Briefly Terra nodded her head.

I've been close to starving one too many times. Looks like you're getting to know the feeling yourself. I'm sure if we look around we could find something though. Her mood settled by her full stomach Terra was a lot more welcoming now, ready to play and relax. Her stomach was no longer growling at her, and she was no longer facing a threat, both which went a long ways with the feral creature. Her tail wagged softly, ears held alert. She easily slid into a position of dominance facing the wolf, accepting the wolf's lower position.

Blind shrugged at the girl's suggestion, dismissing the notion. Her pride had been hurt enough that even starvation couldn't persuade her to hunt in front of this canine. Besides, she was no longer in the mood to hunt, even if the girl offered to help. Her tail flicked flippantly behind her as she watched the creature's position change, and she suppressed a chuckle at her new display of dominance. As much as she tried, she couldn't stay mad at the girl.

Don't worry yourself over me, darlin', she said, her eyes soft and inviting now. My hunger has seemed to suppress itself for now anyway. Rising to her feet, she gave her fur a quick shake before glancing about the forest. It was beautiful the way Mother Nature seemed to splash the foliage around them with snow, and she couldn't help but let her gaze linger. Finally, her bi-colored eyes turned back on the coywolf, and she gave her another good once-over before saying, You seem like a spry young girl. Care for a race?

Blind's tail began to swish excitedly as she straigthened up, not as a display of dominance but simply as an invitation to play. She sensed the carefree nature of this being to be strong, and she could do with a good romp through the woods to take her mind off things. Grinning widely, she tilted her head as if to say 'Eh?', and then chuckled softly.

OOC

The young wolf dismissed the offer of a shared hunt, foolish in Terra's opinion. Her excuse was that her hunger was suppressed for now, but that was just a sign of how far she was gone. The hunger was suppressed to allow one to concentrate on what needed to be done better, not a sign that one wasn't as hungry as they thought. Well, it wasn't Terra's business. She'd let the female do as she wished. Terra would just enjoy herself like she usually did.

The stranger's words sent Terra's tail twitching with pleasure. A race would be fun. Terra wasn't above playing dirty either, finding that it made it more fun when the two were working on outsmarting each other. Terra surveyed the best path for a race before deciding on one that danced over rocks, across a frozen river, and stopped at a small grouping of trees. Race to the big tree in the middle of that group. Go! Not waiting for the wolf Terra sprung forward, bounding across the ground. Her tail wagged happily in the air, enjoying the rush as she waited for the other to catch up.

Blind made like she was going to run after the she-yote, but instead remained in her spot, watching the funny girl tear off toward the tree - boy, would she be surprised when she looked back and saw Blind just sitting there. She felt foolish for acting in such a way, but at the same time it brought her great amusement...and she hoped it would the coywolf too.

Her tail swayed curiously as she watched the tawny-pelted girl disappear through the trees, chuckling softly at how eager she seemed to be to play. This was good, and Blind would definitely use it to her advantage; there wasn't anything she loved more than wrestling and a bit of flirting here and there. Lowering to the ground, the dark she-wolf curled her tail around her paws, admiring the forest once again as silence replaced the canine's chatter and scurrying. Licking her lips, she looked over the carcass of the rabbit that she had so recently lost to this girl, and for a moment she contemplated running away. However, her desperate desire for a friend forced her to stay put, and eventually her bi-colored eyes turned in the direction the hybrid ran only moments ago. After deeming enough time had passed, a smirk crossed her dark lips and she began to count down softly: Five...four...three...two...

OOC here.

Terra didn't for a minute believe that she was good enough to win the race without a fight. Darting over the rocks Terra glanced back, seeing the wolf unmoving. So it had been a trick. Lightly Terra growled before allowing herself to disappear amongst the rocks. She'd chosen this path for a reason, full of twists and the like that Terra could easily hide within. Under cover Terra continued moving, though this time back towards where the young wolf sat. Careful not to reveal her position Terra moved downwind until she arrived behind her.

Walking forward Terra was almost completely silent until she reached behind the wolf. Nice trick. Levelly she gazed at the wolf, meeting the mismatched eyes. Her persona was fairly calm, though Terra was a little irritated that she'd been taken in by something so simple. She should have known better than that, being a trickster herself. She hadn't expected such trickery from someone so gentle though, leading her to underestimate the female. That was a mistake that wouldn't be repeated. Terra smiled lightly at the wolf, tail wagging slightly.

…One. Blind turned around just as the hybrid returned and nearly sarcastically complimented her trick. The dark she-wolf chuckled and rose to her feet again, smiling coyly at the girl. Perhaps, but I was rather surprised – however pleasantly – that you fell for such a frail ruse, she said. Although, this does confirm my suspicion that you’ll be tremendously entertaining company…in the best way, of course. Blind noted with a happy nod that the coywolf’s tail was wagging, and she playfully nudged against her shoulder with her own as she slipped past her.

All in good fun darling, of course, Blind then added, peering over her shoulder at the girl. The dark she-wolf was in abnormally high spirits today, and she couldn’t help but fish for a little fun. She was glad, too, that the coywolf was so willing to play, for this would allow her to continue her games without the creature becoming upset at her. It was true that Blind never poked fun to be cruel, for she didn’t have a cruel bone in her body. But she knew that any normal canine could easily become annoyed with TOO MUCH fun, so the wolfess always kept her games to a tolerable level. Tell me kiddo, she finally said, how do you feel about sparring? That same mischievous glint shone in her bi-colored eyes, and she allowed her tail to lift high enough to sway like a flag raised above her back.

Having the fact that Terra had fallen for something so simple pointed out didn't please the trickster. She prided herself on being fairly apt at spotting tricks. True, she was still young and nowhere near the level of mastery those older than her held. Terra was much more proficient at tricks than the average canine though. Only those who played tricks themselves matched her. To have dropped her guard over something so ridiculous was extremely humiliating for her. Her ears dropped slightly as she tried to pretend it hadn't happened. She still had such a long ways to go.

The wolf rubbed against her playfully before backing away a short distance. Terra followed her, watching as she dipped into a bow. Any other time Terra would have argued that she wasn't a kid, but with the sting of humiliation still fresh Terra didn't think she had the right to protest. Not until she proved herself in this one's eyes at least. Her head cocked slightly, considering. What kind of sparring? Terra didn't know how to fight, but when it came to wrestling Terra did know some dirty tricks.

The coywolf seemed hesitant now, and Blind couldn’t blame her, due to the fact that she had teased her quite a bit. In an attempt at reassuring the young lass, she stuck her nose forward and flicked it against the coywolf’s throat, her tail ever-swinging above her back. At the question of what kind of sparring they’d be doing, Blind tilted her head in confusion. What kind? she repeated, genuinely questioning. What other kind is there other than…sparring? She chuckled then, her tail swaying rapidly as she leapt forward and aimed to tackle the girl.

In a split second, memories of her tumble in the forest with her other hybrid friend pummeled the thick space between Blind’s ears in a flush of nostalgia. She could see it clearly in her mind’s eye: the fighting lessons, the run-in with the bear, the moment of surprise that met Blind when she woke to find her friend whimpering above her. Her body nearly froze, her mind suddenly tricking her into thinking this was indeed her hybrid friend, and her tongue went into frenzy, stretching out to lick the coywolf before her in every place she could reach. It was clear that this hybrid wasn’t her friend…at least to anyone whose mind hadn’t been sickened by months of mental and emotional turmoil. But Blind couldn’t see that, and so she continued to desperately shower the hybrid with affection as if she were her dear Vessie.

OOC here.

The wolf's nose flicked against her neck, bringing a playful growl from Terra's throat. She did know that there was more than one kind of sparring at least. There was playing, where both just batted and tackled each other, and playing dirty, where even the environment was used against the opponent, and trained forms of sparring used to teach the other how to fight. Terra wasn't involved in any of these except for the one involving tricks, used to test herself and improve. In an instant the wolf bowed down, leaping forward with a tackle.

Playfully Terra mimicked the bow, dodging slightly before showers of licks began to cover her. A yelp of surprise escaped her as she was subjected to what felt like a bath, her face, paws, neck, and even her stomach licked. Twisting Terra ended up on her back, looking up in surprise at the wolf's frenzied attack. Seeing no harm Terra reached up hesitantly, licking her back. The bath continued, and Terra turned it into a game. Growling playfully she slipped out from beneath her playmate, twisting around and darting a tongue across the other's face, moving to cover the other in licks.

Blind paused for a moment as she began to question what she was doing, her sanity slowly trickling back once again. But this girl didn’t react how she’d thought she would. A tiny tongue found its way over to Blind’s dark pelt and she froze, her ears pricking forward with intrigue. Bi-colored eyes flickered over to the hybrid as a coy grin spread across her face, and she realized that this girl was actually quite adorable. Everything was a game to her, and therefor there was no risk of getting hurt lurking behind every action. With a playful growl, Blind nudged her maw forward and nipped at the girl’s ears, her own pink tongue dancing out to catch the girl’s cheek. Her tail continued to sway happily, and her dark body nuzzled up against the hybrid’s in a mischievous manner as she chuckled and pawed at her tawny shoulder.

As much as her subconscious tried to take her back to the thought that this was her scarred friend, the she-wolf was enjoying herself too much to let it. The prospect of meeting someone new excited her too much, and her body showed it as she bounced around the girl like a wriggling puppy. A tiny yip escaped her jaws then, and she lowered her head to tuck beneath her paws as she stretched forward and looked up at the girl with bashful eyes. Forget the race, forget the sparring, forget the tricks. She was going to have fun for the first time in a long time, and she wasn’t going to let anyone tell her otherwise. That is, unless this girl protested her goofily affectionate actions or grew tired of them. With a rise of her head, she let out a nearly inaudible whimper before lunging forward again and attacking the girl’s face with licks, hoping rather un-secretly that this new playmate wouldn’t leave her.

The wolf growled playfully, nipping at her ears. Terra tried to flatten them, but still got one grabbed, not quite quick enough on the uptake. A lick ran across her cheek, with Terra responding by nipping the female on the chin. Being pushed wasn't much fun, but Terra quickly shoved back, game to show that she could play just as rough as the larger female. She might be smaller, but Terra had more experience when it came to surviving the rough environment they tumbled through. Happily Terra yapped, bouncing around with excitement.

Her new friend bowed down, and Terra took the opportunity to rush in, only to get caught in another shower of licks. She did her best to protest it, she really did, but it was hard to do so when laughing and batting playfully back at the other. She dived low, pushing underneath the other with the hopes of tipping the wolf over. She was still being licked, with Terra now licking around the wolf's legs, fighting as hard as she could to not just roll over and submit from the laughter that streamed from her.

Blind was impressed at the way this hybrid seemed to hold up under her barrage of playful attacks. She imagined that, if she had been in optime form, her licks would be replaced by tickles, and she’d been known to force a few playmates into giggling submission with her tricky fingers. Perhaps she was at a disadvantage only having her tongue to fight with; she wouldn’t use her teeth on the girl. Either way, the hybrid seemed to be enjoying herself, and at this point, that’s all that mattered to the chocolate-pelted female.

Suddenly, the hybrid was between Blind’s limbs, and her head followed the canine only momentarily before toppling over onto her back. Her dark belly exposed, Blind flailed in an attempt to shield herself from the constant attack of licks, her body twisting and wriggling as her own laughter escaped her dark maw to match the handful of giggles trickling from the girl’s. Stretching her neck forward, the wolfess attempted to snatch the hybrid’s arm and tug her forward into an awkward canine hug, her tail wagging all the while. You funny little thing! she chirped, offering another lick to the girl’s ears, you just don’t give up! And of course, Blind didn’t mind this. The last thing she wanted right now was for this to just be another twisted dream she’d soon wake up from, only to find herself just as alone as when she’d trekked her.

Her attack was successful! The wolf rolled over, leaving the stomach exposed to Terra's barrage of licks. She was winning the battle, if one could call it that. Her tail wagged furiously behind her as she danced around her fallen foe, licking her all the while. That didn't last long though as Terra's leg was grabbed, pulling the coyote down into a heap atop the wolf. She squirmed around restlessly, collapsed on top. A whine of happiness slipped out only to be met by a slight growl as her ears became washed out.

Cocking her head at the odd words the wolf spoke Terra tried to figure out why she would be considered funny. Nothing occurred to her, though she'd have to concede the small part. Terra just wasn't a very large creature. She grabbed one of the wolf's own ears and gently tugged on it. Give up? I don't know the meaning of the word! She nuzzled her head before twisting around to lie down next to her playmate, looking at the world laid before them. Terra sighed in contentment, though her muscles were still taut and ready to send her flying in case of another lick attack.

Blind chuckled as she looked over at her playmate, and then nuzzled up against the coywolf before returning the nip to her ear. She was happy to just be able to lie beside someone who didn’t seem to care, someone who didn’t have a pack to run away to or duties to carry out. And even if the tawny girl did have a pack that she’d eventually have to return to, Blind didn’t feel like she was inconveniencing her with her time. That was something she had always disliked about her birth mother: no matter what was going on, it seemed like time was too precious to Rhia to waste it with play or chit-chat, or anything really. Re-focusing her attention on the girl, a playful noise gurgled in the dark wolf’s throat and she wagged her tail happily. Then, as if she were the same size as this little coywolf, Blind tucked her nose beneath the hybrid’s creamy chin and closed her eyes, allowing the sounds and smells to wash over her.

Being entirely content, Blind nearly dozed off beside the girl, eventually stirring with a quick jerk and then a contended coo as she licked the girl’s neck. She then realized that she had never learned her playmate’s name, and this caused the dark she-wolf great concern. Rolling over to hover above the coywolf, she looked at her with an almost worried gaze and said, I don’t believe you’ve told me your name yet little one. The worry faded then, making way for a look of pure happiness as her tail continued to wag and she offered another nuzzle to the hybrid’s shoulder.

OOC

This wolf was a strange one. She happily nuzzled into Terra before grabbing her ear, tugging on it. Terra's muscles had tightened at the movement, quickly relaxing as the feeling of the day soaked in. It wasn't one to be spent running about madly, but to relax and just do whatever they wanted. Terra already did whatever she wanted, but relaxing was a lot harder for the coyote. She was always on the move, chasing down whatever idea or trouble she came across. Terra startled slightly as the wolf's head wedged under hers as if they were pack. Terra twisted her head to the side, glancing down, before deciding that it was alright. There wasn't any harm. Not like they'd meet again.

Terra kept a sharp watch on the area around them, making sure that there weren't any cats or bears in the area that would love to make quick work of a pair of sleeping canines. Her tail thumped the ground softly, enjoying the closeness, only to jerk her head up as she was almost clipped by her new friend jerking awake. Again a soft puzzlement ran through Terra as her neck was licked. It was almost like Terra was watching a pup. The age difference wasn't that big. Terra wasn't even sure which of them was younger. The wolf scrambled out from beneath her, breathlessly asking for her name. Coyly she smiled, letting the wolf nudge her shoulder. Fleta. And you?
