In the winter the lone wolf withers

Small moisture beads at the end of the twitching, black nose glinted in the day's half light. The sky was plagued with heavy gray clouds that threatened something between rain and snow; probably another painful hail that sent the young pack scrambling for cover. Titania thought of it as the Loud Snow, or the Rock Snow, for she didn't know the difference between the ice that fell from the sky and the flaky, soft powder, save for the fact that one could sting if you were caught within its beating. In the end, they both left sparkling white on the ground, and melted in the warmth of the noonday sun – when the clouds didn't block it as today, anyway.

Despite the looming weather the Alphess heeded the twinge in her gut that told her it was snack time. It was not yet time for her pack to hunt for another deer but that did not mean she had to deny herself a little treat. The fact that she had never been successful catching prey on her own was completely beside the point. And no matter, it was the determined that learned and grew, and if the silvery girl had anything going for her, it was her determination.

Most of the small game was hard to find in the dead of winter, but still they were there if you knew where to look. In the few short months since she had left d'Arte Titania learned fast. Even if she was not a successful trapper, she could at least sniff out a treat a mile away. Now she paced through the woodsy snow, nose to the ground despite the frigid temperature, testing for creatures beneath the crust. Her ears were pert, cupped toward the snow. Somewhere beneath her paws burrowed some critter, now it was only a matter of gauging how far down the animal tunneled...

The winter was here and it was harder on some of the pack members that did not know of the small prizes that could be found when looking, granted sometimes you had to be heartless when it came time to find that meal and kill the young or old. However a meal in the winter was a meal in the winter. Mice, rats, rabbit, vole, and many more of the small rodents made a nice meal this time of year, after all what was the Omega expected to eat.

Noah knew that being the pack’s Omega meant that he was officially the last one to eat, even before the new members coming in. That meant if he was lucky he would have a bone or two to suck the marrow out of. He knew that he would slim down, however he knew it was not because of his put out with his mother, or of his setbacks, his heart and morals had landed him here. The male would let any one that needed to talk to do so, and he would do everything within his moral and physical power to make others around him happy and pleased. The male wanted to wear the title with honor however it just was not a rank that someone wanted to go around boasting about.

The tripod male moved though the lands, down a path of the pack lands. Seeing the she leader, he knew what she was doing, what everyone had on their mind. That was trying to find a bite or two to eat. Though, he did not want to come off as to prideful, or disrespectful of her rank with in these lands. So Noah did what he thought would be the best and maybe the safest route to take and that would be asking the young leader. ”Any luck Miss?” The silver male looked at her as he saw her two long ears pointed towards the ground, looking down as if she was waiting on one to them sleeping animals to jump out in front of her and beg for them to be eaten alive by her.

There was more to hunting then waiting, it was feeling the ground under the feet, feeling for any and all shifts in the ground, the slights of move could hint to the skill trapper of the food on the run. The half blind male trusted the ability to feel the shifts in the grounds and how the wrath felt under his feet more than any other thing that he could use to get a meal.

The male nuzzled her cheek greeting her as he looked down at her paws, he wanted to chuckle as how hopeless she looked, but the male just didn’t have the heart to do something that mean when she was trying she was trying really hard. ”W..w..w..willing to learn a f..f..f..few tricks from a g..g..g..gimp?” He was willing to teach if someone was willing to learn with an open mind, he would and could show her how to feel for the movements and then he could show her some more human like ways. Setting up traps, smoking prey out, oh the list could go on and on, he would start simple with her; he wasn’t sure what all she had been shown with in her short life thus far.

Her concentration broke as Noah approached, an ear bent towards him followed by the golden eyes as they turned upon his visage. She looked a little annoyed, being interrupted and all, but she didn't do anything past the small flash of irritation in her eyes. Even that look melted quickly as Noah nuzzled her and spoke a generous offer. She wanted to resent the wolf for knowing that, beyond having found the prey beneath the snow, she didn't know what to do, but it wouldn't have been fair. She knew that somehow she could dig down and get the animal, but she didn't know how to do it without the creatures hearing her paws scraping the snow and fleeing to safety long before she disrupted the hovel. After all, she was no arctic fox that knew how to just leap into a snowdrift to catch mice.

After a second's hesitation she gave Noah a small bump on the muzzle, returning his affection. Noah hadn't always been like this, crippled as he was, and had many seasons of experience on her. In fact, the loss of his arm and scarring of his body was only due to an act of heroism, not weakness, not some lost battle. She glanced back to the level snow and nodded.

“I supposed I could stand to learn some techniques, if you think you can teach me.” When she looked at him she glanced at his leg – or lack of – before meeting his gaze. Her eyes were soft, not worried about dominating him in this moment for the Omega knew his place. “I've never really been alone long enough to need to learn how to trap on my own.” She admitted, whilst excusing her ignorance at the same time.

“I know they're down there, you hear them?” The frustration was clear in her tone. She flattened herself on the snow, laying down so even her chin rested on the snow, and then impatiently began pawing at the spot that the muffled squeaks came from, yet still there was no burrow entrance to be seen. A moment after he pawing, the sounds stop. “They already know I'm here, I can't dig for them or they'll just borrow down farther.” She took her paw away, curling it beneath her chest and turning her gaze back to Noah.

When it came to surviving alone – a thing Titania knew she would never have to do, but should probably have a vague understanding of anyway – she was willing to use whatever form necessary. Survival was survival. If Noah could only show her his 'tricks' in Optime form, for that was the only body viable for the man (she assumed), then she would be willing to shift and learn what he had to teach.

So the issue was she wanted a meal and was not sure how to go about getting this meal out without making them dig deeper. The male had a few thoughts, his mind processed and thought of the best and more fail safe way to teach the young queen how to hunt for small ground animals. Noah did not want to teach her a trick that could fail and risk that being displayed as any better reason not to have the male around in the pack lands. The Omega Sawtooth wanted to prove to the land and her members that he belonged here just as much as every other member of this wonderful wolf pack.

The male was able to see a bit of that anger still hidden away in her soft and pure honey golden brown eyes. The male admitted to him-self that she had every right he came in the middle of a hunt, and had broken her mind set away from it. The male knew that she would be fine once the young little lady had something in her stomach. She would be in a better more and more thankful that the grey male was around her, and that he was able to teach her something, and wasn’t pressing her to smile or just relax and be thankful she has a wonderful pack and wonderful members and lastly to smile and be happy and joyful because she had the best thing in the world going for her. She had the love of another.

”Well we could s…s…smoke them out…no fire t..t..though. I have an i..i..i..idea though…” The male was going to scare them into either tunneling deeper or come running out of the hole that they had made into the soft earth ground. The male knew however the soft area of the ground only lasted a few inches, the male then was fully aware that they would come bolting out the tunnel that they made, running for dear life.

The game plan was that Noah would scare them out and Titania could make the kill, she would get the honor and glory to say that she made the kill and she would be able to get the taste of blood in her mouth. Noah would then be digging towards the den so that they try to escape without getting hurt. Then the young leader would be there with her deadly fangs waiting for her kill, the mission would be done and the mission would be a huge success for both the Omega of the pack and the Alpha female of the pack.

The male gave her a soft nudge as he walked three inches away from the hole that they had made. He looked at her and then pointed his nose to the ground, his request was as clear as he could make it without making the verbal request. Walking back over to the lady he lowered his voice to a hushed whisper. ”We need to s..s..stay quite. When t..t..they run out. Kill.” That was all, she had the far most important mission in this hunt.
The male walked away from the lady, waiting on her to take her point and give him the symbol that she was ready for him to start scaring them and digging like a mad psychotic blood hungry wolf. The male wanted everything to go off with a smooth hitch.

Eyes flashed back and forth between Noah and the snow, but she found it hard to keep focused on the male for long. When he said something about fire she laid her ears back, unsure of the idea. Fire held great power that could so easily be abused, and whilst it had several beneficial applications like warmth and light, harnessing it was still a human machination and she wasn’t sure she wanted to invite that kind of usage into her pack. That wouldn’t really feel like hunting, either, and she wasn’t so hungry that it justified resulting to dirty tactics to get to the food. There was a delicate balance that nature had painstakingly set, and New Dawn had a responsibility to protect that balance whenever practical. No, if these were lean times and the two were starving, ribs jutting through and fur dull, she would have jumped at the idea and asked Noah how to make fire, but now she shook her head slowly.

Luckily, Noah already banished the idea of using fire without her having to say anything else. She could see the change in his eyes as a plan sprouted within, and she cocked her head, wondering what he thought. He moved toward where the scratching had been heard and poked his nose towards the snow. Titania cringed, afraid for a moment that his hobbling might prove to be too noisy and frighten their prey farther into their warren, but it did not. He moved back over to her and spoke in a low voice.

“How are you going to do that?” she wondered, unsure about his plan. Could he dig fast enough? You know, seeing as he only had one forepaw to do it with? Then it occurred to her that it didn’t really matter, all he was supposed to do was be scary from behind and then chase the prey into her smiling jaws. She nodded and stood up, but crouched as she waited impatiently. Her head low, she kept her eyes trained on the snow. Noah took position, and she gave a single, firm nod to let him know that she was ready. Go for it. Time to catch some vermin.

Did it matter how the male was going to get them a meal as so long as he followed the rules of the lands, and use the primal means, what the wolves that walked on these lands before him. The male would do just that, after all he lived to make other around him happy and he knew that young queen would be happy the most with a full belly and not worrying about breaking her own rules. Then if that was case the male knew that there was one safe way about getting these small mouthful meals out of the hole that they were hidden away in.

Her words did not faze him, he knew what to do. The male was missing a limb, and missing the biggest part of sight in the milky blue eye, and the eye that was missing was like trying to hear under the water. It was possible, just ever so very hard at doing. He smiled at her as she parted his black leather like lips, allowing the flesh pink hued tongue to slip out of his mouth waiting on that one small movement of her pretty grey and white furry head.

The male stepped up seeing the nod from her head, the male gave a nod back as he yipped, barked and whined very loudly. Feeling the mice moving around he whined again as his flicking paw flicked forward, as the male threw his body up he flicked his paw back. Jumping back the male feel down to his knees as his maw pushed into the ground as he lunged forward nipping and yipping at the ground.

The male felt a tail in his mouth and whined pushing forward, the male nipped down hard upon the pink lightly fuzzed tail. The male snarled pulling back on the tail feeling the tug of the mouse, he let go.

Noah knew that the mouse felt like digging deeper was not the safe choice that he thought it was to begin with. The male then felt the moving more than three of them coming out from the ground, none was stupid enough to come rushing into the chomping jaws of the silver omega male.
Noah was doing his part he could only hope the young bright eyes she leader was able to get one for her-self. Though as selfish as it sounded he could hope that she would kill just a small extra one that why he could also enjoy the meal. However, as the rule of the Omega he would allow her to eat all that she wanted and then he would be allowed to eat. Marrow was the food of the Omega’s and they had better not question that either.

At her signal the Omega enacted his plan, first becoming suddenly and surprisingly noisy and then doing some move in which he leaped and then came down over the hovel, his weight seeming to smash the hidden network of tunnels and trapping the mice in only a few inches of the burrow. They couldn't flee down deeper into the tunnels, and there was little way they could dig with Noah blocking so much of their direct exit. There was only one way for the creatures to flee the danger; towards it.

At first Titania almost got so distracted watching Noah pull off his move that she forgot her part in this, but the moment the first rodent squeaked its surprise her eyes returned to where the warren had been. She saw something in Noah's teeth, he had already caught one. Wake up, Titania! She snapped out of her surprise and into action.

One mouse had already escaped right between her paws, but she didn't waste her time watching it go or lamenting the loss. Knowing it had skittered away under her only served to further her determination as she watched for the next gray-white creature. This time she swooped forward, dancing lightly on her paws as she dipped her head. Her teeth clacked as they snagged nothing but air, but a second chomp and she managed to catch the one. Her teeth crushed it and she wanted to swallow it then and there, but there was no time right now. She dropped the limp mouse onto the snow and lunged at another. This one, too, escaped her jaws at first but she kicked at the snow, upturning the mouse in a spray of powder and took advantage of her second chance, crunching that one and dropping it to the ground too.

By now any surviving members of the family had plenty of time to flee. There were two mice on the snow from her own jaws, and who knows if any from Noah. No... now three from her, as one more bustled out of the snow and towards her. She dropped it and then stared intently at the snow, her eyes darting every which way as she thought she heard more squeaking, more scuffling, but each time it was only an illusion. She waited several long moments, holding her breath so as not to obscure any sounds from a straggler, but alas the last had gone.

Deciding that they were done, she turned her eyes on Noah, her expression bright. “That worked out better than I thought it would,” she admitted, sort of praising him at the same time. “Did you get any?” She asked as she gathered up the three limp little snacks that she had caught, setting them in a tiny, bloody mouse pile.

WC:490+ - ---

He dove in again pulling out one of the mice, it was a small feast but the queen would have a full stomach tonight. She had no one but herself to be thankful for. All he did was drive them out towards the hungry lady. He did not see if she had gotten any, all that he was thinking on was what was going on under him, he would pull his head down long enough for a quick, and short breath of air and then would be right back at it. Attacking barking, snarling, and doing everything that was within the silver omega’s power to scare out the mice that where just inches away from his mouth.

Once the male was sure that all of the mice were out and gone from the hole the male pulled out the dead one that had had caught and brought it over to the lady of the fair coat, the silver male dropped his one kill into her pile as he sat down looking at her then lowering his head back down nudging the pile to in front of her cream colored paw, the male wanted her to fill her stomach. It was winter and it was cold. The pack needed its leader strong and warm. Beside maybe came spring or summer the pack would be lucky to be expecting its first litter of the lands. That was if everything played out as the male foreseen it in his mind.

The male smiled knowing that she was happy with what little that they had gotten; the silver monster wagged his tail as he again pushed the meal towards her teenaged paws. ”I might b..b..be half blind, and h..h..half deaf however I did g..g..get my father’s hunting skills.” He was more skilled when he was able to use human like tools, but the silver male understood the primal pack and knew of what he was getting him-self into when he joined the pack with in the first few day of the pack being official.

He gave a nod to her question; he was not pleased with the amount he had brought out. It was still something to show that he still had some bite left in him, but not enough to please his own personal want to prove that he was able to hunt and track like anyone else. He was a wolf still, somewhere deep inside of him, resting in his bones there was a wild wolf that was begging to come out, begging to show every one that he was still ever so much alive. ”Just the one….s..s…sorry.” He spoke softly and shamefully about the amount that he had caught. Next time….next time he would hunt he would make sure that there would be enough for the pack to enough….maybe next time he would go after a deer or two. That should make a nice dinner for the pack, and for her.

She watched the Omega take the single mouse and add it to the pile she had made, then nudge the lot towards her. For a brief moment watching his muzzle so close to the bounty almost made her want to snap at him, but she knew he was only trying to show her that it was all for her, and she held back the instinct. They did have more reasoning than the primal wolf, and could see through some behavior that their base animal would have misunderstood.

Dipping her nose she sniffed at the pile, and then pushed each little thing apart inspecting them separately, testing their sizes and their scents. A moment later she opened her jaws and gathered them up, pranced a few feet away, turned in a circle, and laid down on her belly, dropping the mice at her paws. There were only three there, she had left one for Noah to enjoy. The one that was left behind was one that she had caught with her own jaws, and in exchange it was Noah's contribution to the kill that she gobbled up first.

The first mouse was in her jaws and down her gullet in a matter of seconds. Finally able to slate the want that she had had throughout the entire ordeal, the thing went down almost as whole as it had been when it was killed. With two mice still at her paws, she looked at Noah.

“The pack needs good hunters,” it was some kind of praise, telling Noah that he was just as important to the pack as the rest despite the unique challenges he faced. “Don't be sorry. One is pretty good seeing as you were not the trapper.” She gave a wolfish smile, and then began chewing on another mouse, this time taking more time to nibble on the small carcass and savor it.

The silver male had not put thought into the actions of nudging the kill pile closer to the lady, he was trying to let the lady know it was all for her to eat. He knew his job was to allow everyone to eat and then if any of them felt lucky they would share it with him, again the word lucky came into play. Though it was a word he had to live by a lot he was not the lucky type. The male had not be lucky in a lot of areas in his life, though he could say that he had been lucky in the area of having lots of beings that he was able to care about and able to show that he loved them. That was one of the few areas in which the silver male was able to say that he was lucky. It was strange, in looks, charm, and wits he was most defiantly in the lacking.

When the lady had move towards the kill pile and started to sort through them, sniffing at them and pushing them around. The silver Sawtooth omega stepped back, he did not want to press his luck standing to close to the kill pile. He would rather like to keep his hide that was nicely placed upon his body. He waited for her to get done sorting them, and when she picked up her pile of kills and left him with the one that she had caught. The male was not too stupid he knew what that meant, she was thanking him for his add to the kill, the male did not waste any time, he walked over and gingerly took the mouse in his mouth and quickly brought it over to his own little area, he was foolish not to savor the mouse, but he was still nothing more than a wolf and a wolf did need to eat.

The male was skilled in other areas, it was sad that he had learned to need and use the help of others in order to get the kill, but he was still just as skilled as any of these other wolves. He had to be the one to train his cat to do what he needed, he was the one that had trained and saddle broke the mare that he was going to have to finds something to do with. He had done all of that work with the animal. Then for some foolish reason he had taken the fancy to live like the wolves of the past had. He was just a wolf and wanted to live like one, however he had never realized that with how deformed he was that he would have taken a fancy and a need to live like the human like wolves had.
”Aye.” Yes the pack needed its hunters, and he could have been one in another life, he could have been many of things in other life. However here he was, half blind and half deaf the silver male was not able to show or use all the skills that he had learned though the years. He would have children one day if the lord and lady would allow him, and he would teach them everything that he knew, he would also make sure that no one would harm a hair upon their head. He would teach his children to be respectful of all lives, and also teach them when it was okay to stand up and take charge. He would be a much better father then his own, and he would not allow his children mother to run off and do as she pleases. Living the life of a loner able to lay with whomever she wishes. After all it takes a mother and a father to make the child, so why not have a mother and a father raise the child. It didn’t matter if the mother and father where not a couple.

He gave a nod as he laid down, one was good but if he was fast enough he could have dove into the hole and able to pull them out and just snapped their necks and repeated it for a few time till he was sure that he had cleared the hole out to the best of his inherited skills. He felt the need to show everyone in the pack that he was far more they just an old poor cripple of the pack, he was loyal when it came to a pack so maybe that was why he had not been kicked out yet.

Her eyes turned to Noah as he picked up the reward she had left him and sidled over to his own space. She nibbled at the last mouse but her eyes were upturned to peer at the male as he wolfed down the mouse, and there was a tiny chuckle from the Alphess that probably only she could hear. He was a dedicated wolf, she knew that, and she could see in those eyes that there were hopes and dreams there just like anyone. In fact, maybe more than anyone, and she wondered if that determination alone gave Noah a little something extra special that another wolf – a whole wolf – might not have had.

She crunched down the last mouse and then padded over to him. Now that all scraps of food were gone there was no threat in being close to each other again, and she did so enjoy the Omega's company. There was something soothing about his presence.

Rounding his body, she came up to his side and laid down so her back and shoulder were pressed against his, and she set to work lapping at her paws and rubbing them on her muzzle, purifying her fur of the crimson bits that had gotten there during the hunt. “We would permit you to hunt in your Optime form, you know,” she said casually, knowing that he could probably be quite a help to the pack that way. “We have our ideals but we also know that there's no strength in denying the best use of our bodies, no matter what their shape.”

It was just a little tidbit of information given to the elder wolf by the child alphess. She knew he tried so hard to fit in and he kept away from a form that would make life more practical for him because it was the pack's beloved shape. They would still prefer he use his Lupus form otherwise, but at times if Noah could be of more use in his bipedal shape, no one would fault him for it.

The silver male felt the lady move to rub against her, he smiled looking up at her and when she laid down shoulder to shoulder, back to back he lifted his head sight up to look at her pretty young face as he let his tongue drop out. He was always happy to have someone to talk to, the life of a wolf at the bottom of the pack, and a wolf that had no mate. His mother was always around Soran, though he did not want to even see her face. He was done with her. How dare she compare him to Lucifer.
The silver male brought his head down laying it down upon the ground. He looked over to the lady cleaning her-self as she told him that for one thing he could go in his two legged shape…it was temping, really it was. However…would it be fair just for him to do that one thing…one single thing in his two legged shape. He offered her a soft lick upon her cheek.”Kind offer. T..thank you.” He dipped his maw looking back down to the ground thinking about it. ”Not fair though…I will l..l..learn.” he sighed thinking about it…really he would have to learn if he was ever to get off the lowest rank in the pack. ”Like Zalen s..said. I need to learn t..t.to be more w.wolf like.” The male knew that was the only way to make the black male happy with him, he seen how he looked at him, the look of pity. The look that told anyone that Noah was more of a burden upon the pack then he was a help.

He had plans…he knew what must be done, in order to prove that he could take any job and he could and would perform just as well as any other member of the pack. The silver male’s head shot up looking at her. ”W..would you permit me to h..hold a pack hunt n..next full moon?” The male would hunt along the pack brothers and sister, he would show just how much he could do, he was half blind and half deaf, but he knew this just might be the right steps to take to getting off the Omega rank. To prove that beyond his good heart that he was a strong and needed member of the pack.
