It was different now. He tried explaining this over and over in his head, as if a little metronome ticked it's chimes to the current era. He was eleven months now, the dull sheen in his jet black coat stretched over a larger, mature body than the previous one that marked this area. Khaden's mind proved to be sharper, keen to analysis, despite the way he clung desperately to his old introverted puppy self. However, in different lands, in different places, he still seemed to revert to his old habits, his old thinking, the old ways of before he left.

He strained to focus on the task on hand, Dhalia and her motives were fresh, and he knew immediately what he had to do. Regret was a painful thing to live by, and Khaden seemed to suppress it daily. The sun continuously peaked through the harsh grey clouds, blinding the terrain and forcing the ebony male to slow, keep his head tucked under it's merciless stare as he reaped the ground and it's nearby foliage for some clues to where he might even remotely be looking for. He could smell it, taste it, it was tangible in the air, and the boy furrowed his brow softly, quietly picking through the crime scene. He knew what he was after, but the first step seemed to be so evasive.

He stood, tail limp against his hindquarters and ears flattened back in the finely printed "guest" posture, surveying what he pinpointed as the location of his desires - however, his desires seemed to be absent. "Conri, my brother, where are you?"

"Conri, my brother, where are you?" The voice echoed inside the head of the slumbering male, but the voice did not hold true. It was a whisper laced with venom, words from the lips of the brother that had taken him hostage and taken his arm. In his dreams Stygian was a monster, humongous and salivating venom. The sight of the villain stirred the young Leader quickly from his sleep, forcing him to roll and stand simply to get the image out of his head. He most often had to force himself up, away from the place where dreams lurked, for fear of falling back in to them once more.

He'd been resting beneath the shelter of a tree's shadow, keeping cool on such a hot day, but now that he had awoken he forced himself out across the lands. His movements were slow, almost groggy, and he took his time moving through the array of trees and grasses that lined his lands. It wasn't the call that had made him aware to the fact that someone was there. Had it not been for the faint breeze that brought the faint scent to him, Conri may have never known. It took a matter of minutes for him to reach the stranger, or who he thought was a stranger. The sight of the other male left him stunned, mouth agape and staring.

"Khaden?" He looked so much like their mother that it was almost frightening. It was obvious that he had fully taken after Soran, the size of a wolf, while Conri was coyote-like than anything. He wasn't sure whether to faint or rejoice.

Bleh, sorry for the wait for this. x_X'

Patience was truly a virtue, either given through hereditary or developed through time-staking nurture. For the ebony male, it was definitely a combination of both. As he stood underneath the blinding summer heat, tail tucked neatly against his hindquarters, ears flatten, his head lowered to the ground once again. He watched the soft, lilting breeze take the words that erupted straight from him dance across the terrain as he shifted limbs and head, casting a slightly worried jade eye over his shoulder. He didn't quite know if Conri would be here soon or later, but nonetheless, as long as his older brother was alive and well, he knew he had the time to bid.

It was the feeling though, that first claimed his attention. His back stiffened as his hackles unconsciously raised, some called it that sixth sense, ESP, or whatever paranormal experiences that would shadow over the real realm, yet within a matter of seconds Khaden could feel his body tense. His head shifted again, following with delicate features the direction of the very tangible sense, wet nose put into performance - but the boy didn't need it for long.

It was never hard to distinguish his brother, those same jade eyes seemed to echo across the family line, dull fire crept through his magnificent coat, and that same look, and that same voice - the voice he had memorized as a puppy. Khaden's name was clear, keen, but at the same time muddled, riddled with the anxiety and disbelieve that this scene was unfolding right before him, and it wasn't long at all until the slippery downhill slope of control was out of the boy's grasp. "Conri. Conri, I'm... I'm back." And in an instant, he was truly back again, he was back again, and he could do naught but sit hard on the ground, his tail in a ready thump thump, as a slow, but anxious smile spread against his thick black muzzle.

Sorry it took this long to get back to this. D: I was swarmed with ModBox Reports this morning on Wajas. T-T

Conri and Naniko both had spent ages wondering what had happened to the pups, whether they had run off to go and find Soran or if they had simply gotten lost somewhere and..didn't make it. Of course, the two of them had also spent ages looking for them and, being so little at the time that they disappeared, Conri didn't think it likely that they could have simply gotten lost. He would have found them. "I didn't think I'd ever see you again.." His voice was low and quiet, though there was a faintly rising excitement that swirled within it. He just had to give it a moment. Take some time to let it all sink in. First his mother had returned and now, suddenly, he was staring down his long lost brother.

Before Conri even notice, he was walking, clearing the space that separated them in very few strides. His first instinct was to nuzzle his brother, to shower him in affection, all the while looking him over to make sure that he was okay. The older male stopped himself short of that though, only to come to stand in front of Khaden. He was almost grown now, no longer the pup that he and Naniko chased around what seemed like so long ago. The little boy that he and Naniko had worried about for so long, only coming to realize that he simply didn't have much to say when he was younger.

Tossing it all aside, the thought that his brother, very much not a pup anymore, would be offended by his affectionate actions, Conri stepped forward again. In an easy movement he pressed his muzzle against the side of Khaden's, bumping it gently. "Mom came back also.." He revealed quietly, certain that they hadn't been traveling together, because she would have told Conri so. "She's in the lands here, now. She'll be thrilled to see you.." He was testing the waters, so to speak. Khaden and Dhalia hadn't ever really known their mother well, she hadn't been around so much. Would her brother be angry with her for disappearing? Conri knew all of the reasons that she had gone but, as far as he was aware, Khaden did not.

Khaden is a really interesting character. I'm really trying to sort of get a feel for him.
IN CHARACTER

in character

Affection was such a tricky and delicate topic, and Khaden was hesitant to pursue it. It had been such a long time, memories that swirled intricately against his head seemed to swarm to him in hoards. It only took one sole bump against the side of his angular muzzle that keyed the boy into pushing back, his tail wagging in that slight impish way as he gave a slight bark of excitement. It seemed surreal, but altogether a good feeling.

The next that happened was unexpected at best. Khaden had never truly experienced parents, his own had been the experiences with his brother and sister-in-law, precious Naniko. With Soran in and out of his life, it was hard to attach feelings to the situation. He knew of Dhalia, her curiousity that eventually led to her infatuation with darker habits, which ultimately led him to his decision. However, when it came down to him, he didn't know how to take the role of Soran. He had gone through the phase of anger, remorse, teenage angst that riddled him through that loner wolf period of his life, but today seemed so... distant - as if he just as much forgot that he had a mother.

He knew immediately that Conri was testing the waters, it was hard not to with Khaden's history and he averted his eyes toward his brother and shrugged it away. "I'm so excited to see you Conri, I have so much to learn, so much to tell. How is Naniko? Where is the rest of the pack?" He left it in the air to be interpreted. Khaden wasn't stupid, he knew he had to face it sooner or later - he just picked later than sooner.

I'm glad he's keeping you interested. ;D You play him so well. X3

Conri wouldn't blame them for any ill feelings toward their mother, whether or not he shared those feelings. All that Dhalia and Khaden had known, at least in his head, was abandonment. First their mother left them, Miss Phasma had passed them on shortly after that, and then Conri and Naniko had been their sole providers. Their mother had returned though, only to leave once more. He knew the hurt all to well, Soran had left him on more than one occasion, but he could never find it in himself to be angry at her. He understood, in some odd way, why she had up and disappeared, even if he didn't really understand.

"Naniko is..is doing well.." He hesitated only a moment amidst his words, contemplating whether or not he should go in to everything in that moment. So much had happened, so much bad had happened, but he didn't want to ruin the mood. Khaden would have been an Uncle. Would have been, but Conri wasn't sure if he needed to know that right then. All that really mattered at that moment, he decided, was that Khaden had returned and seemed to be doing well.

"You seem to have done fine for yourself also..." He commented then, noting the fact that his brother didn't seem injured or malnourished, which he was thankful for. He and Soran had returned, all of which seemed like miracles, and it only left one question to be answered. One person unaccounted for. "What about Dhalia?" His voice was hesitant once more, afraid to hear the answer. Maybe she was lost or something worse had happened. Maybe she wasn't far behind, intending to return home also.

Aw, thanks! Big Grin *yawn* I stayed up too late last night.

in character

It was interesting, how words could imply so many different meanings. How they could be used and manipulated into several different interpretations and slips. With one accent here on one word, it could mean something entirely different than if it was a simple lilt on another. To say nothing at all, was to give an immense statement as Khaden had practiced, but to say everything at once was to truly say nothing. It was intricately tied with body language, as if it could speak words itself as well. A soft hesitation could speak volumes, as Conri's did. The simple halter, shudder of his body, Khaden knew that there was something wrong with the equation that he was so familiar with as a puppy. However, he graced the same privileges Conri gave him with the previous dance of words. A delicate frown graced Khaden's features as he let it slide, dipping his head to the side as he gave a soft signal that he wouldn't pressure - but he wanted to know.

Time would always tell, and Khaden knew this very well. Time told Khaden that, despite the difficulties of living alone for so long, his social skills were still close to impeccable... at least with Conri. Time told that Khaden had to fulfill his mission with his sister. Time would most likely tell about Conri's mishaps with Naniko, and time again would tell of Khaden's struggles with his sister that led him to run away from her, break those hard ground loyalties. Time, although had put a soft band-aide over the betrayal he felt because of that incident, because of Dhalia's incessant need for something that was morally wrong. And sometime soon, Conri would know of this - but now was not the time. He lowered his head, the slight shift of his figure giving Conri everything he needed to know at the moment as far as Dhalia's situation. "Dhalia and I split on the road."

He shrugged it off immediately, and gave Conri a cheeky smile. "Tell me though, Conri, how has life been here? It feels as if it's been ages..."

Conri knew that the time would come for him to tell his brother of everything that had happened, he didn't mind it either, though he did feel as if the bad things needed to be saved for another time. If the young Leader could have it his way, his brother wouldn't have to face anything bad at all, be within his own life or hearing about the lives of others, but Conri knew that simply wasn't possible. Just like with their mother, he felt the need to protect and shield his brother from anything and everything possible.

Khaden's words about his sister her Conri in such an odd fashion that it caused him to freeze, brows raised and quite obviously confused. As he recalled, Dhalia had meant the world to Khaden and it was quite odd to not see the two together, even for a short span of time. "I hope she's okay..." It was all he could manage, jade eyes searching his brother's face for some kind of hint to a more clear answer. Something had caused one of them to leave the other and he couldn't be sure which it was. Their sister had always been outspoken and, from what he could recall from her younger days, the 'leader' of the two. Perhaps she had sent Khaden away?

Pulling away from the subject, at least for the time, Conri settled his rear to the ground and began to speak once more. "Since the other lands burned, we've barely been here for three months and a War has already started. A pack called Dahlia de Mai is now going at it with Inferni.." And so had his own pack, almost. "Naniko was able to agree to a truce with the coyotes though, so we are not involved. Still..if you see any of them, be careful." First and foremost was the safety of his family, no matter if they had a truce with the coyotes or not. "Naniko, she'll be happy to see you. If you planned to stay, anyways.." Was he just passing through?

Family affairs were always joyous, but every single one seemed to hitch a snag. For Conri, it was his pack's neutrality
and Naniko's affairs with it. For Khaden, it was a multitude of thoughts that raped and pillaged his mind every night. He didn't quite know how to break it to his brother that the little sister Conri and Naniko hand raised turned out to bite back at the hand that originally fed her. He forced himself to disregard the looks that his brother gave him - raised brows, searching glances and Khaden ignored them all in stride. One day, one day soon perhaps, his true parent would know of Dhalia's true intent. But, thinking about it softly, Khaden was surprised that he had come so early. True, he had made a beeline back to old packlands as soon as he had made his decision, however Khaden was sure that Dhalia would have been in the lands by this time. The fact that Conri was asking the whereabouts of his sadistic sister he had to take as a good sign.

Talk of war shocked Khaden. Perhaps he was sheltered, considering he was definitely sheltered away from Soran, and when time came, sheltered away from Phasma, but in no way could he have predicted that not within three months and conflict had already risen. He knew of the vicious reputation Inferni had, especially as it merely relocated from the old lands of Bleeding Souls, but were tensions so high these days? He shifted his weight from one foot to the next, a habit developed over the road, as if he was weighing the words that Conri was telling him. He looked up, jade green eyes matching an identical pair as he smiled. "Of course I am staying." Khaden replied easily, his tail picking up it's gentle wag. "This is home." True, there were different directives of staying, but he said each word with ringing truth. He never truly wanted to leave, and now that he was back he knew that it was for him to stay.
