nothing heard, nothing said, can’t even speak about it; on my life, on my head, don’t wanna think about it

Having regained his strength from his journey, Alduin promptly decided that he would celebrate by going for a run. He was quickly discovering that ‘Souls was beautiful and it deserved his undivided attention while he could stand to give it. The tundra beast sprinted through the Phosphagos Foothills unshifted, enjoying the feel of the cool morning breeze flowing across his face and the sensation of how his muscles rippled beneath the thickness of his fur. His jaws opened to the north as he loosed a joyous howl at the rising sun. It was good to be back. Though, for a moment, he couldn’t help but wonder if the poor ground beneath his feet felt the same.

It wasn’t long before Alduin decided shift so he could enjoy the scenery better. So he took a moment to come to a stop at the base of Pictou Falls, calmed his heart, and meditated. Slowly, his body changed. His limbs grew longer and more human-like, and his body lengthened until he found he could stand on two legs. His weight shifted more to his hind legs to allow for better balance as the changes continued, painless and smooth as always. The fur on his body remained somewhat thick, but it was most evident near his head. His hair was long, falling down in mid-back length locks that faded from dark gray to white. As his shift continued, the strap of leather around his neck tightened to fit around his thick neck almost perfectly. He gripped the velvet pouch that was attached to it lovingly and sighed as his transformation became complete.

His eyes opened slowly. He felt the sting of the tears lining his eyelids, and quickly scooped water into his hands to splash his face with. He shook the remaining droplets away and sat at the edge of the pool, dangling his feet under the waterfall to wash away the dirt that had accumulated. The day may have been beautiful, but even the sounds of the rushing waterfall couldn’t satisfy the need for conversation. Goodness knows he needed a good distraction right now..

(Ishhh fine.)
Her figure was like wine as it moved—smooth, rich, and deep with color and taste—elegantly catching the luminescence of the rising sun At the break in the thicket, where the river ran broad with its gossamer waters, she stood, her figure a warm burnished shadow. She paused at the streams edge, curiously analyzing the stroking light glisten on the pooling ripples of its surface, the wind of oncoming day blissfully hugging her curves. Her tresses sashayed sweetly, her face adorned with russet curls and copper fibers, and as she peered into the liquid mirror, her chest heaved with an ache. And as she exhaled, her breath stuttered and she fell short of life, her heart quivering wildly with anxiety and blood. It devoured her, her flesh teeming with a suckling pain, her muscles trembling with sorrow and doubt. But it should not be revealed. It should not be discovered. No man, no woman should see something so pitiful, so writhing in anguish and grief. I should not leave myself so open to ridicule, so fresh to monsters' hunger. And so I readily begin to cover the rueful shakes, and once more I drag myself into an afflicted indifference. Her foot draws foreword, suspended above the washing place, and on her leg the waves cast a moving tattoo of water, tempting her with its cerulean art. And then she sunk to bathe, her body delving into the tranquil youth of the brook, dowsed in a satisfying cool. Her back sloped below the surface, her neck reclining gently in the air as she was lulled by the purifying cleanse, flushed hair wavering through the wetness. Breathes tracing the face of the drifting current, her slender face passed into the depths. All was quite in the waters of silence. The sounds were muted and low, hearing only the soft murmuring hum of the earth and the lathering expiration that passed through her cold lips. Her mane wavered about her head; there was nothing to see but shadows there, in the beneath. Everything was dark with mystery, enigmatic and strange. Nothing defined and all evanescent. All struck fear in her lonely heart. Her head arose from under, lashing into the chilling air, adorned with a flowing crown of crystalline beads, her hair circling in a whisper. As her skull emerged, her atoms shook with a startling paranoia, turning about in her bath to observe the quieted trees, the creeping darkness leaving her vexed with the unknown. But still she showered, her body soaking in the lingering tides. Her body swept of dust, she now only called to sweep her heart. "H-hello?"

Hm?” Alduin mumbled as he moved his head to see beyond the waterfall. His eyes flickered about the length of the pool until they came to rest upon a small, shadowy figure. He squinted, for the cliff above was casting a darkness over the part of the pool he was surveying. He huffed in defeat and rubbed his eyes. Perhaps he needed to see a healer for his vision? Whatever the case, the Alaskan wolf pushed his body away from the edge and out of the cool waters, hoping that if he walked to where he’d heard the voice he would find what called to him. After all, a story might lay in wait for him, and there was no way he was passing that up.

He gave his optime body a good shake, ridding his fur of almost every droplet that clung to it, and then started on his way around the edge of the pool to find what was on the other side. Eventually, he spotted the broken voice’s owner. It seemed it was another wolf, neck deep in the water. A grin found its way onto his lips. Here was his entertainment for the morning. As he made his way closer to the female, he remembered that he didn’t wear clothes like he’d seen other wolves around this land do. Although he was raised to think being without clothing was entirely normal and the preferred way to run around, he began to wonder if it offended some in ‘Souls.

Salutations, madam,” he greeted with a wave and wag of his tail. “I can only assume it was you that summoned me?

Truthfully, he was a wreck on the inside. Meeting someone new always frightened him. He never knew what they wanted, or what they were capable of, and that made him naturally wary of everyone he encountered. He never showed it, however. That would be a terrible mistake.

Insomnia was far too oblivious to the world around her. So it was a great surprise to her when a brujo was suddenly beside her. Bright yellow orbs swivelled from the heavens to his face, taking in his darker hues. Within the first few minutes of being within his presence -- and knowing it -- she could tell mostly what he was about. He was strong, confident. The way he held himself, the height of his chin, the stiffness of his tail. She could also tell that he was all wolf; unlike herself. Like this brute, she had a tell-tale sign: her ears. They were that of her coyote cousins. She shook her head to herself and sighed. And then he spoke, an accent accompanying his low words- well a accent different than what she was used to hearing anyway. She smiled and dipped her head at the male. "Mmmmm. Maybe I did, maybe I didn't" , she teased. She slowly got out of the water- only with the feathers in her hair and scars covering her legs and chest. She looked him up and down and than smiled again. "I'm Insomnia."

He looked around for a moment in an attempt to find anyone else that might be in the surrounding area. When he saw none, Alduin’s head tilted to the side in confusion. He wasn’t sure what she was talking about. Either he was the one she was calling to, or he wasn’t. After all, it didn’t seem like anyone else was around. After a moment of staring at her and trying to figure out what she might have meant, he shook his head briefly and lowered his body in a bow.

It is lovely to make your acquaintance, Miz Insomnia,” he said, smile still playing kindly on his lips. “I am Alduin.

He lifted his body upright again, but his eyes never left the feathers and scars that adorned her body. The water that drenched her made the marks upon her more obvious, and Alduin cringed visibly. Instinctively, he reached out to her as if she were about to fall over from the pain. He stopped, however, when he realized the physical pain had long since passed. Still, his hands remained at the ready if she needed assistance. Who knows? Perhaps a sudden twinge of hurt would afflict her.

Are you quite all right, miss?” he asked, concern spreading across his face. “I hate to sound like I’m prying, but please tell me those are not from too recent of an incident?

He felt dizzy at the thought—dizzy with anger, that is. No one deserved something so foul as bodily harm. Emotional scarring wasn’t acceptable either, but he only had the power to see with his eyes, not his mind. Something stirred deep within him, but he made sure to keep its chains secured tightly. No need for violence—yet.

"A lovely name." She answered with hushed tone. Alduin. Bold and beautiful. A powerful name for a strong minded wolf. It would be interesting to see what sort of adult he would become. Ears flicked atop her head as she heard a question asked. Her stare went out and stared at the lake. So vast and blue, for a moment she could not believe she had swam that far. But adrenaline could make a creature do amazing things and the fear or what may have happened if she did not make the journey was worse than drowning. Her ears than went flat against her head and she lowered her head. "I'll be fine. And yes they are recent.. I had to fight to save my own butt." Than she did something out of her heart and stepped closer to him and nuzzled him to show that he didn't need to worry much.

He wasn’t sure how to react when Insomnia made physical contact with him. He thought at first she was falling and accidentally brushed against him, and on instinct he placed firm hands on her shoulders and held her steady. He was concerned for her, but he felt better upon realizing she had done this of her own accord. He would not turn away the affections of another, however. She meant well, and it was appreciated. So, smiling, Alduin gave her a gentle pat on the arm, and then put his hands back at his side.

I am pleased to hear that you are all right,” he said sweetly, “but I am saddened that this is recent. Would you mind telling me what happened? Please do not feel pressured to do so. I can respect your privacy.

He smiled, for he could no nothing else. He fought back the urge to demand who had done this to her. Not because it was her in particular, but because she was a living creature. Nothing that lived and breathed deserved that sort of terror in their lives. He trembled on the inside, the demons eager to burst from his mind and into his heart so that they might wreak havoc upon Insomnia’s pursuer.

He calmed himself eventually, and placed his hands behind his back, feet spread shoulder-length apart to steady his stance. All the while, his eyes never left the feathers adorning her hair.

She nodded as he patted her arm and backed up a foot or two. She sat and looked at him. "It was a attack by 3 wolves- I do not know who they were or why they did what the did... The scared me up and left me there to rot away. I-I just....I didn't know what to do. I just laid there, waiting for someone to come along who was nice enough to take me back home." She looked down, tears slowly rolling down her face, and she tried to hide them. She looked at him as he looked at her feathers and she smiled just a little. "Would you like to have one?"

Unwarranted attacks like that made Alduin’s skin crawl and his fur stand on end. His eyes narrowed as thoughts clouded his mind, and he made it a point to flatten his ears against his head out of disapproval. Senseless violence was an act of stupidity in his eyes, especially so when the victim was as young as Insomnia.

I am sorry that such a thing happened to you, miss. If you need anything, all you have to do is ask,” he said, meaning most of it.

He felt somewhat embarrassed that he’d been caught staring at her feathers. Truthfully, it wasn’t the feathers themselves that kept the tundra wolf interested; it was the fact that they represented something he craved, something he thought he so desperately needed: a little companion. He couldn’t very well expect a wolf like him to wander around and follow him everywhere just to entertain him with conversation. So he came to the conclusion that he would need a creature to keep around to talk to, even if it wouldn’t talk back.

Ah, no, thank you, ma’am. I do, however, find myself more inclined to ask where you got those from?” he asked, wondering if it was somewhere nearby.

Perhaps a bird was nice? Perhaps not, though. He would be much too envious of its ability to fly. A creature that walked as he did would be best, maybe. He would search. He would search, and find something to keep at his side. And maybe even this she-wolf would assist him in doing just that.

She couldn't help it, her head bowed and her eyes befell her paws as she whimpered, the sting of acknowledging what she wanted hitting home. She knew she looked pathetic, but couldn't do much about it. She was being heartbreakingly honest with this brujo that she had just met. "Thank you..I'll remember that." She nodded and grinned a bit. He asked where she had gotten her feathers and she chuckled a bit. "The gray one and black one a bird gave me when I gave her food on my travels, the red one - I traded." She started to toy with her feathers now nervously. She didn't know why all of a sudden she was so shy but she was. She sighed and looked up at the sky.

Her behavior was something that Alduin found strange. Having little to no experience with females near his age, he could only assuming she was frightened of him. After all, why else would she act the way she did? So in an attempt to lighten the mood and show he meant no harm, the tundra wolf knelt down to the girl, smiled as brightly as he could, and moved to wipe a tear from her face.

Come now, Miz Insomnia. Now is not the time for tears and memories that ought not to be remembered,” he urged gently. “I am seeking the acquisition of a tiny companion for my travels. As you can see, I have had no luck so far. Would you be so kind as to allow me to enlist your aid?

He stood, and as he looked down on her, he extended his hand to help her up. It was then that he decided that this lady probably needed a companion, too, and he would stay for as long as he needed to help her get one. She didn’t look the type that needed an escort or company twenty-four-seven, but at the very least, it would make Alduin feel better once they parted ways.

She nodded and her tears slowly stopped flowing down her face. “I am seeking the acquisition of a tiny companion for my travels. As you can see, I have had no luck so far. Would you be so kind as to allow me to enlist your aid? She grinned a bit. He wanted a creature, she was amazing with animals so this would be no problem for her to find one for him. She took his offering hand and slowly got to her feet, using her free hand to wipe away the grass and such from her fur. "What did you have in mind? A small creature such a hawk or bird or.... something a bit more fluffy and furry.?" She smiled and imagined him with a small fluffy bunny and started giggling. She than remember she was holding his hand and let go of it quickly. "U-umm..Sor-Sorry." She looked away nervously and put her hands behind her.

He pondered her question for a moment, but shaking his head as she suggested a bird of some sort. No, he still believed he would hate it for its ability to fly, so a bird was out of the question. He had passed many smaller creatures on his run here, but he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted (or what those critters were, for that matter).

Preferably, something without wings,” he said. “I would envy the creature if it could fly, and I could not. Unless, of course, that creature happens to be a fruit bat. I’d love to see one of those!” He chuckled at the thought. Truly, though, he wanted to see a fruit bat. He’d heard of them in tales from animals that passed by his home in Alaska, and the strange beasts had piqued his interest.

I have no idea what I want other than that, to be honest. Perhaps looking around would do me some good,” he said as he shrugged. “But we must find you something as well, Miz Insomnia. I can’t have you wandering about by yourself once I take my leave. It wouldn't be right.

His mind was far too busy with the prospect of finding a critter for both himself and the young lady before him that he hardly took notice of her stammering and nervousness. He mumbled a quick, “Hm?” before shrugging it off and focusing his eyes elsewhere. He decided then that women were strange creatures.

So, madam, where do you think these critters in question might be hiding?

(Oh god I didn't see this until now!)

She nodded. No birds. No flying creatures- except a fruit bat. She had seen them once before when she was a small pup. They flew above her head into the dark trees and didn't come back out. She looked up again and than back at him. "Well, Lets go look shall we?" She smiled and walked ahead of him, whistling a bit to herself. He wanted to find something for her to. That was a shock to her. No one had ever wanted to do that before. She would finally have something to take care of and not be lonely. She glanced back at him and walked forward more.

Alduin nodded and walked somewhat behind and to the side of Insomnia, making sure he had a good view of the area that surrounded her. It wasn’t his responsibility to care for others outside his pack, but he would make exceptions. After all, a life is a life, and he couldn’t live with himself if she was hurt on his watch. So as they walked, the tundra wolf kept his ears pricked forward and his eyes shifting fluidly across the lands; ever vigilant, and prepared for the worst. He placed a smile on his lips to keep the mood light, however. He didn’t want her to revisit those memories.

So madam,” he began softly so as not to startle her, “what type of creature did you have in mind for yourself?

He looked about the area, finding only the common squirrel and fluttering dragonfly within sight. They weren’t what he wanted, and he was certain Insomnia had better ideas for her own companion as well. He pictured her with something adorable, but vicious. It needed to fit her personality, but be able to help protect her if the time came. Perhaps, he thought, one of the martens? They’re cute enough fellows and they seem to be rather abundant. He pondered the worthiness of the creature, but he would wait until he’d heard what the lady had in mind before he spoke his piece.

For now, he continued to walk by her and kept a wary eye out for any dangers that might befall the pair. Highly unlikely, but his actions were fueled by a lifetime of chivalry and respect. After all, what sort of man would he be if allowed another to fall victim to anything while he was present? He sniffed the air frequently, being careful to disguise his inquiries as normal behavior so he wouldn’t alarm the young woman he traveled with as he did his best to discreetly shift her movements toward the trees. Surely there would be something for them to find in there.

"I really don't know. Maybe you can pick something for me and I'll ind something for you." She looked down and sighed. She had no idea what she wanted. She just wanted something, someone to be there for her. That's what she would pray for each night. She turned and saw a rabbit bounding away into a few shrubs, squirrels in trees. None of these seemed right though. She looked back at Alduin and grinned. "What do you think than?"

nothing heard, nothing said, can’t even speak about it; on my life, on my head, don’t wanna think about it

Sounds like a plan to me, madam,” he said with a grin. “For now, I think it’s best that we part ways and search for something for each other. We can reconvene at the falls.

He made a bow to the dark wolf and walked toward a small patch of trees and shrubs. He didn’t worry too much about Insomnia, though, seeing as how the terrain was rather flat and lacking in any sort of foliage. It was just enough to house a few small animals, and Alduin was thankful for it. Without an abundance of trees to block his view, he could easily manage looking out for both Insomnia and her future companion.

So it was with a sharp eye and determined mind that he set to work, keeping his footsteps light and his movements slow. He decided a marten would be perfect for her, but he would have to find the right one. His head turned from side to side as he searched, but he found only rabbits and various flying bugs again. Occasionally, he lifted his nose to the wind to check for intruders and focused his eyes on wherever Insomnia had wandered off to.

An hour passed, and Alduin had been fortunate enough to come across something climbing into a tree. Quickly, he turned to where it was and fell to one knee. His eyes made sure to stay focused on the creature as it scurried about in the branches. It looked upon Alduin with curiosity, though it was too afraid to come down from the safety of its perch. It seemed like it wished to communicate, but it only spoke in low speech. Alduin could not understand, but perhaps as it spent time with Insomnia, it would come to learn enough to speak with her a bit. So he offered his hand in peace to the marten as he attempted to coax it out of the tree.

Come, my good sir,” he urged quietly. “A friend of mine desires your company. See her over there?

Alduin pointed in the direction of Insomnia and the marten turned his attention to her. The creature saw a frail looking beast in the distance, and for some reason it made him sad. As he smelled the air to perhaps catch a whiff of her, he made a face of disgust. There was something on her that stunk like violence, but he could tell it wasn’t any act of her own. The marten stared long at the female before he nodded once and bolted out of the tree. He passed Alduin like lightning and sped toward where Insomnia was. He wanted to see her up close.

Miz Insomnia!” Alduin called out as he tried to stifle a laugh while running toward her. “Beware the fluff ball!

Alduin made his way to where the black wolf was, not too concerned about her safety as it seemed the little fellow was more curious than anything. Cute little devil, he thought as he raced back to his new acquaintance.

There was a rush that she felt against her skin, a tingle that cascaded through her nerves and made her prickle with excitement. But she was so skinny, perhaps too skinny, to feel too much ease around him, and her stomach ached with a restlessness that could only be satiated without feeling helpless. It didn't affect her mannerisms around him, but it was there, lingering in the pit of her chest. She was a prisoner in his gaze, and that only made her more flattered. She gave him a sensual smile, filled with a promise that they would both enjoy. She lightened her smiled and saw the small creature bounding towards her. She looked down and got on her knees. As the creature bounded into her she laughed and picked him up. "Well hi there cutie." She scratched the top of his head and looked up at Alduin. "Thank you.. so much. You are amazing you know."

Alduin smiled proudly, happy that he could bring a bit of happiness to the girl. He hated seeing anyone sad, and she was no exception. Truly, he hoped that the marten would keep that smile on her lips so long as she kept him. The fellow seemed like the proper match. It was fluffy and mild mannered, and seemed to get along with the girl.

You’re welcome, Miz Insomnia,” he said with a bow of his head. “I would not dare to say that I’m amazing, though. I am simply me.

He wrinkled his nose at the thought. No, he certainly wasn’t amazing. There was nothing about him that stood out, so he wasn’t entirely sure why the creature before him thought otherwise. In his own opinion, he was nothing short of completely average. But, she was entitled to her own opinion, so he would leave it at that.

Nonetheless, I appreciate your thoughts,” he said as he remained standing, hands folded behind his back.

He watched the marten carefully as it played with Insomnia, enjoying the scratches he was received. It was still a wild animal, but he hoped it would eventually learn to follow her and be her guardian. The girl seemed so fragile that it almost pained him to know that he would eventually have to return to Anathema, but he felt better knowing she would have her newfound companion. He gave the area around them a once over before he returned his eyes back to the playful pair before him.

Were you, by chance, successful on your own venture, madam?” he inquired.

At this point, he wasn’t entirely set on getting his own critter. He was fine with having found one for Insomnia, but if she had found something for him, he would not object to taking it into his care.

"Well, I think you are. You found this little one for me." She smiled and picked up the marten and giggled. "I think... your name should be Austin." She looked to Alduin and walked to him. "We gotta get you one now." She walked and looked up in the trees and on the ground. What could fit his personality. She saw it. A Least Weasel. She called it over to her and looked at it. "Alduin come here!!"
