The Difference Between Right and Wrong
#1
Tharin had made his way across the territory, deep in thought. He was troubled, uncertain of what he was doing, and trying to think about how he could possibly explain any of it. There wasn't anything to guide him, to tell him what to do in this situation. Tharin had never been confronted by such a dilemma before, and needed help to figure out what he was to do. He was loyal to his pack, there was no question about that. His need to protect and care for someone who wasn't pack though, it was rather confusing. He could try and explain his attachment, the reasoning behind it, but he didn't really understand it himself.

He wandered until he came across a beautiful, almost ethereal place. A small lake was down there, mist rising off it. It was a perfect little haven, a deep valley wrapping around it, the occasional rocky section breaking it up, yet making the picture more complete. Tharin sat down, the peace of the place flooding through him. He still didn't have any answers, but it was at least a little closer than what it had been before, even if it was only in his own mind, the noise that rattled through it silenced by the still sight of the water.

It was the first time the Alpha had visited Avalon since the snow had melted, and once arrived he was greeted by the scents and smells of his pack-mates; it seemed they had discovered this ethereal haven as well.

Today Zalen occupied the smallest of his three forms, for four paws were more sure-footed on the hike to this mountain jewel then were two. He made his way over to the falls, where he had first met Titania, and took a long drink of the cool water. It was not long before his ebony coat shown with diamond droplets, and it made sure to shake them free before walking away from the water. It was then that he caught sight of Tharin in the distance, and let out a bark of greeting before bounding over to the male.

He came upon him quickly, tail wagging and head held high, and greeted the newest member of the pack with a nudge of his black nose, Tharin, good day! He said happily. He had not gotten the chance to be with this new male alone, and was eager to develop a relationship with the youth.

A bark brought Tharin out of his thoughts. Lifting his head he sniffed the air. It was the black alpha. He'd met him before, seeing the luperci stretched out on the ground. Tharin was a little uncertain of what to make of his leader. He had been on two legs, yet had been moving on four. Tharin didn't know whether it was easier to accept Zalen acting like that or not. He was adjusting to the idea of two leggers, if slower than another might have. His tail wagged softly, low to the ground with his ears respectfully back. Tharin crouched down a little, doing his best to be respectful to his alpha.

Zalen's nose pressed into him, greeted by a soft whine. Tharin licking at the alpha's chin happily. He was glad that Zalen was on four legs, letting him know what to do instead of standing there puzzled, wondering how to interact with the wolf who was on two legs. It was a lot harder figuring out what to do then. Hello alpha. It's a beautiful place here. His voice was warm, looking over the view. He was lucky to be in such a fantastic pack, one that ran the way he was used to, if still different in style. That was only to be expected though. After all, the leaders weren't the same, and they had two leggers here as well. It couldn't be the same.

Zalen nodded at Tharin’s statement, Yes, it was here that I met Titania and we decided to call it home. He smiled, remembering that wonderful day and how Titania eventually had asked him that they claim it as their own, as they looked up into the starry night sky. It had been winter then, the snow had been deep and Avalon had looked like an angel rapped in sparkling ivory cloth. Now though, it looked so much different; warm, green, and new.

Turning back to Tharin, Zalen went and lied down in the soft grass, I am so glad it’s spring. What would make it even better is if there were pups in New Dawn… He could not hide the slight sadness in his voice as he said it. Titania was not yet ready to bear pups, and the other females had not become pregnant from their heat cycles. With the newly mated couples, Zalen had hoped that, even though it was somewhat disrespectful to have pups before the alphas, that they would produce litters. It had not happened though. Zalen let out a small sigh.

Turning back to Tharin then, I hope the behavior of Noah the other day did not discourage you. I honestly do not know what to do with him anymore. He is weak minded, he could not handle the punishment he received for his transgressions several moons ago. Zalen had not even bothered to discipline Noah in any fashion for his behavior, because the Alpha did not believe it would do any good.

His tail swished listening to Zalen's words. That must have been nice, meeting his mate in such a beautiful place. He imagined it, covered in snow, glistening around them. Of course, most things that he pictured had snow, coming from where it existed almost year round. He glanced over to his leader, glad that his alpha was so relaxed. The pack must be doing extremely well for the alpha to be so content. Tharin's eyes widened at the mention of pups, thoughts rapidly turning to Kiara.

He shook his head, smiling softly. It's not your fault the wolf is weak. He does not seem to be able to live with others. Tharin shut his mouth with an audible click, realizing that it almost sounded like he was questioning his alpha's decisions. He quickly rolled over, submissively apologizing for his words. Slowly he turned back over, looking over Zalen, hoping he'd been forgiven. About pups...I know a wolf that has some. She's young, doesn't have a mate. She belongs to another pack, but I'm worried about her. I don't think they can protect her. He glanced over, hoping for some kind of guidance, even if it was as simple as telling him that it wasn't his problem.

Zalen’s ears perked and he looked as his subordinate as he spoke, but Tharin was quick to pick up on his subtle words and rolled over in front of Zalen in apology. Zalen relaxed again and bent down to mouth softly on Tharin’s scruff for a moment in reassurance. Tharin was quick to turn right side up again then and Zalen thumped his tail against the ground.

Though what came next the dark male had not expected; a wolfess with pups and no mate? What had happened to the father, had he been killed? What pack was Tharin speaking about. Zalen’s mind was a cacophony of questions but he quieted his mind, Who is she and to what pack does she belong? He asked softly. The fact that Tharin was so concerned about a female that was not part of New Dawn spoke wonders to his character and Zalen made note of it.

His apology was accepted, Zalen's mouth closing around his scruff briefly before letting go. Tharin would follow his alpha. He wouldn't question him. As much as Tharin's spirit fought for dominance, he knew that he wasn't a leader. He was too rash in his actions, as he'd just proved. Settling down again Tharin made sure to hold himself low. What followed surprised Tharin. He knew that caring for someone in another pack might bring about a clash of loyalties if the other pack did anything to his, but Zalen didn't seem worried about that. So maybe it wasn't as wrong as he'd thought. Maybe his alpha could fix the troublesome worry that Tharin had plaguing him, unable to shake free.

It looked like Zalen was just as confused at the lack of a mate. Tharin didn't know what had happened, his instincts overriding that question with the simple need to make sure that the pups remained alive and healthy. After all, without pups the pack would be doomed. Not his pack, a small voice in his mind insisted on saying. Yet he still felt the need to care for them as if they were pack. Her name's Kiara. She's a normal wolf like me. I think the pack's called Ichika. He looked over, waiting for his alpha to tell him what to do.

Zalen placed a tender paw over the back of his subordinate almost subconsciously as the male spoke, but the name he preached was one that Zalen had not been expecting. Kiara? The new mother from Ichika no Ho-en? How odd… it was true Zalen had not heard much from X’yrin lately, though the last time they had spoken was a couple moon’s turns ago, and she had been distraught over the sudden weight of leadership put onto her shoulders. After that, everything had been rumors; he had even heard that the pack was no more. But that could not be the truth, for Tharin’s words confirmed that Ichika still lived.

But Tharin’s worries were justified; Ichika was not as it once was; Zalen did not know how many wolves resided there now, but it was fewer than New Dawn, that was for sure. And a mother with new born pup’s would be vulnerable, and that even more-so without a mate. I see… Zalen said, I know of Kiara, her litter is not even a moon old. What is it you want to do for her? He asked, now with genuine concern. Zalen was sure X’yrin and Saluce would do everything in their power to protect such a precious commodity as a mother and pups, but perhaps there was something they could do to support her as well, and the well-being of Ichika.

saluce is gone now Sad

A paw was placed over his back, Tharin glancing over to Zalen. Why had he done that? It wasn't an action of dominance, even though it felt like it could become one, Zalen moving to stand over him and press him down. It wasn't anything that he recognized, managing to make the wolf feel uneasy, wondering what he was supposed to do, what Zalen was trying to tell him. Tharin shook that off, thinking about Kiara and the problem again.

His ears perked, tail wagging a little at Zalen's words. He knew Kiara? That was good. That meant that Zalen could help, maybe do something for her. The worry in Zalen's voice pushed the rest of the wolf's worries away. His alpha could take care of this now. He would worry, and plan about what to do. Asked what he wanted to do Tharin looked down, confused again. I want to protect her. I want to make sure that she has the food that she needs, even without a mate. I want her in a strong pack. Some of it was wrong to want, but he had been asked what he wanted, and that was what it was.

Zalen doesn’t know that Sad

Zalen noticed that Tharin perked immediately when he said he knew Kiara; the male was very worried about her, it was clear. In fact, Zalen suddenly wondered why he was so worried about her; was he hoping to take her as a mate? That made things much more complicated, for Zalen did not want to swoop down to Ichika and steal a member. But Kiara had a choice of her own, perhaps if Tharin went to her and offered her protection and food as he said he wanted to, she would make the decision to come to New Dawn all her own.

Zalen stood then and shook out his midnight fur, nose twitching as he scanned the meadow before them. All was peaceful, in the distance, a fox and her kits headed towards the stream that ran through the middle of Avalon. Zalen let out a nearly inaudible sigh, Ichika is not but an hours jaunt away, if you would like I will accompany you there and we may speak to Kiara. I’m sure she knows you well enough to recognize your call?

will start the thread tomorrow if you like

The alpha rose, Tharin remaining low to the ground, ears respectfully folded back. His eyes followed him, wondering if the alpha had other more pressing duties to attend to than soothing Tharin's foolish worries. After all, Kiara wasn't pack, and had done well caring for the pups on her own. There was no need for Tharin to stick his nose in. If Zalen wasn't worried, there was no need for him to be either. He would just make sure that his attention was focused more on New Dawn.

His true feelings were immediately revealed at the alpha's words, tail wagging wildly behind him. Go see Kiara? Speak with her? And his alpha would be there, helping him. Tharin wasn't sure what he would say when there, other than introducing them to each other. Well, Zalen knew of Kiara, so maybe Tharin would just mention his worries. Or should he? It was rather confusing. Yes, yes she does. Tharin rose to stand with Zalen, eyes bright with hope.
