When the Stars Go Blue

OOC:

The burnt orange pup wandered around the village, her mind buzzing with curiosity. She had only been in the village for a few short weeks and had yet to truly explore as her great uncle had been keeping a very close eye on her since her arrival. Any adult would be able to see that the pup clearly had gone without food more than a young one should. Her legs were skinny and bony and she was fairly small for a pup of almost three months. But her blue-green eyes were bright, displaying her inner health as she slowly moved down the main street.

Jiya has slipped away from the hut that her uncle has been staying, desperate to be free of the elder’s watch. In her mind she was capable and did not require adult help, the naive overconfidence of a very young pup who was yet to know of the dangers that lurked within the world. However she was beginning to feel on edge, instincts kicking in as the sun began to set and she realized she was without family. Her mind told her that she had been bad and a small whimper dared to escape as she gulped, pushing the sound back down her throat. Ara’k? Being so young she was unable to pronounce her great uncle’s name. Her voice was soft and her words ended with a raise of pitch in her voice typical of her questioning nature.

Tiny paws moved faster as she began to trot down the street, stopping briefly around each building and hut to glimpse inside. Although her mind was young she still took a moment to question why there were no other puppies around. Did the spirits not love the other adults enough to bring them a little one? The question did not leave her as she continued her search. Ara’k? Her voice slightly louder now as the stars were beginning to appear and she was weary of the other adults.

You get not so cranky old fart!

Aranck was sure that people would say that he didn't care for his grandniece and didn't feed her. For most things he wouldn’t have cared what people said but if they said anything about that with Jiya and that he was neglecting her, then he would get very angry with them and might have to resort to violence, which he tended to dislike. It was hard feeding a pup that wasn't quite ready for completely solid food. But he still fed her as well as he could. But it was difficult since he hadn't really needed to do it ever before.

He was currently humming to himself while Jiya presumably played outside. He had been inclined to keep her close when she first came here but now he was allowing her some freedom so she wouldn’t have him over her shoulder, hovering over her. He could still hear her and was preparing some herbs for his hands. His ears flicked when he heard her voice and put down the herbs, heading as quickly to the door as possible. She called for him again but he was there already. "Are you OK, little one?" His voice was concerned as he crouched down to be closer to her level.

OOC:

She had never been one to believe herself in need of an adult. In her own mind she was perfectly capable of everything, far beyond her years and not a useless pup that spent their time playing with the others and asking stupid questions. No, her questions were always well thought out, planning and shining with intelligence of at least a year old wolf…or so she thought. But as of right now with fear clutching to her heart as she called as loud as her tiny voice would allow her, while keeping her pride in tact, she felt a certain helplessness. A helplessness that was certainly natural for one so little and inexperienced to feel but Jiya deemed it unnatural, a feeling for others.

Yet there was a sense of relief as she heard that old slow voice, it’s reassurance instantaneous. With his presence she felt a sense of calm return to her. Her fragile body turned to see his tawny figure crouched down low and her mixed eyes quickly hid her panic. With the grace of an inexperienced pup she attempted to pull herself together to save her reputation. She puffed out her chest, forced her ears forward and with a somewhat steady voice announced, I thought you were lost. Should would never admit that she had been lost or that she had been made so frightened by the thought of it as to call out. Instead of admitting her own fault she graciously put the blame on her Uncle. He wouldn’t call her out on it, she was just a pup after all. Morphing back into her shy nature she asked with a soft voice, Why are there no other pups around? The Great Tribe must have had other pups so why doesn’t this place?

He was rather worried about her slightly panicked look but she did try and save herself any embarrassment. Her reasoning that she thought he was lost would have made him laugh but he simply nodded at her solemnly. "I'll try not to get lost again, dear one." Oh how much he would laugh when she was in bed. But he knew better than to embarrass her further by laughing at her, no matter how amusing her worry was. Though, he figured that she wasn’t really worried about him being lost.

Her question about the lack of pups made him think. Were there any pups around? He wasn’t sure. Though she was correct about their being quite a few pups in the Great Tribe. "I don't why there aren't any pups around, Jiya. There may be some around. But AniWaya is rather small so there aren’t too many adults either. And there were a few pups back in the Great Tribe. But they are much larger than here." He stood up and grinned down at her. "Let's go back to our hut and we can talk some more where its comfortable." He really would like to sit down somewhere besides the ground.

OOC:

There was a sense of relief when her Uncle took the blame for being lost. She would have found her way home anyway so it really didn’t matter but her tiny pride was kept in tact. Osdv. Alenidohv ulenahidv uyoi She spoke in her soft voice, her mixed puppy eyes looking at the ground with a bit of guilt lingering. Maybe it wasn’t so good to accuse her Uncle of being the lost one? Nonetheless she allowed herself to forget what she had done and raise her eyes to Aranck.

He seemed to be deep in thought when the words finally came forth. Her face lit up with pride as he confirmed that there were pups in the Great Tribe. She was pleased that she knew that about the tribe. Of course they would have pups though, it was the Great Tribe after all and no tribe was that great unless they had pups for the future. Which is why she was becoming slightly critical about Aniwaya but at least they had her to make up for it. Gadono? She asked suddenly before switching back to English, Why is the tribe so small? It didn’t make sense to her. There must be many more wolves out there looking for such an honor as to join a tribe.

Following her Uncle back into the hut by his heels she wandered over the soft pelts she slept on and laid down, her thin face leaning against her paws. Ar’ak what do you do here? She asked suddenly, unsure of where the question had come from. All of a sudden she was just curious to know what her Uncle’s job in this tribe was. She was sure it was something super important, maybe he worked for the council women directly! Whatever it was Jiya would try her best to follow suit and be as great as her Uncle some day.

WC:000+ - OOC

Aranck just laughed at her words. "Indeed it is bad to get lost. Especially since I don't know my way around AniWaya as well as did the Great Tribe." He wondered if his niece had told her daughter much about the Great Tribe. He remembered Jiya's father and did really care for the man but supposed that it was a moot point now that he had to care for her. Though he did wonder what happened to the man and why he couldn’t care for his daughter. He wasn’t aware that her father had died protecting her mother so he couldn't help raise his daughter.

Her question about why the AniWayan tribe was so small was a bit harder to explain to a young pup. How could he explain that many wolves had left after a war started by the idiot Maska? He gave a sigh and considered how to answer his grandniece. "We are small so that we can learn more about each other. But hopefully soon we can grow." Maybe not the best answer but it would work for the time being. When she was older he could explain about the war and then she could understand why AniWaya was so small.

Her next question was much more pleasant to answer and much easy for him to do so. "Here, I am a teacher. I show wolves how to speak AniWaya and how to read and write. But in the Great Tribe I was a priest." He wondered if she knew what path she wanted to follow. "Jiya, do you know what path you wish to follow?" He looked at curious for her answer.
