Song birds called out as a rooster in the distance cried to the morning sun. Hotaru slowly opened her eyes and took in the darkness of her world. Cool air spilled through her open bedroom window as a slight breeze rustled her fur. The grey wolf sat up in her bed and gave a hearty yawn as her arms flew up to stretch out her tired body. Slowly she climbed out of bed and shook her body to removed sleeps last grips from her mind. Small cheeps sounded as Dalgina's chick called out to the grey wolf. Hotaru moved easily through the familiar room towards the far wall where her staff rested. Her dexterous paws reached out and wrapped around the wooden handle. Floor boards creaked as she moved down the hallway and into the front room.

Before exiting the house, Hotaru grabbed her shoulder bag that was filled with her carving supplies. She could feel how worn it was. The bag had been by her side through the past year, and it was starting to show its age. The blind wolf was glad that she had received a new leather satchel from Ithiel, but she was still attached to her old one. With quick fluid motions, the grey female was out the front door and stationed herself on the large boulder that rested on her front yard. Beside the boulder sat the wooden bench that Hotaru had made a few months back, although she had personally never used it.

Hotaru settled down into her usual carving position and took out a failed puzzle sphere. She didn't have anything special in mind, just some practice. With patient hands, the woodcarver ran her knife over the wood and the smell of ash filled the air. Hotaru filled her lungs with the scent and smiled.

Even with the night's sleep she still felt tired and grumpy as Temo rustled her awake. She tried to ignore his movements, getting ready for his day's work but it was nigh on impossible no matter how quiet he was trying to be her hearing still picked up on it. Resigned to the start of a bad mood the woman hauled herself up out of their makeshift bed. Temo left just as she did and Jace silently cursed to whichever gods were listening was listening. Thankfully all of her children had already departed the house or they would have discovered her wrath and soon fled her presence. Maybe Temo had warned them.

A small breakfast was had which was odd considering the distance she had traveled in a relatively short time. She should have been starving but the notion of food made her feel slightly ill, so she ate only a meager amount. Her stomach protested and rumbled despite her nausea which didn't add to the mood and headache slowly brewing at the front of her skull. The door was slammed shut behind her and she set her direction towards the borders, pace quick, muttering angrily underneath her breath. She didn't even notice the blind carver sat in the morning sunshine.

Carving was one of the things Hotaru enjoyed doing the most and it had a calming effect on her. She had been a genius before her injury and the fact that she could still carve even afterwords was a miracle. Hotaru didn't know what she would have done if she had to stop carving. Woodcarving was her life. The scent of freshly cut wood, the feel of a knife running through the bark, the feeling of the soft heartwood beneath her paws; It was all fantastic and the sensations had only increased with the loss of her vision.

The sound of quick footsteps and angry muttering broke through Hotaru's concentration. Her bowed head lifted as she listened closely to the approaching stranger. Hotaru didn't recognize the voice, but the female smelled of d'Arte, Dalgina, and something else. Hotaru couldn't place the lingering scent but she didn't particularly care. Her pack mate was in distress over something and as a high-ranking member it was her duty to see to the happiness of those around her.

The blind female stood while she put her instruments aside. Her dexterous fingers grasped the handle of her wooden staff and she moved quickly in pursuit of the other. "Pardon the intrusion," Hotaru called out. "Are you all right?" The grey female's voice was riddled with concern as she moved. Although the blind female had originally been distant from her pack, she was working hard to become a more integrated member and be a role model for all of d'Arte's new members.

Where did this anger come from that gripped her so fervently. Was it the rebound from seeing her former home now a desolate wasteland in terms of love or old friends. Or maybe her failure to convince Kiara to come with her to safety. She was worried, she fretted constantly about her friend with Kiara being a non luperci and unable to take other forms to protect herself and even more so now she had children, it was a constant source of stress.

She whipped around suddenly as a voice came from behind her. It was polite, inquiring and at any other time Jace would have been strangely touched at this strangers concern and care. But at this moment with the rest mist of rage descended over her eyes the interruption was unwanted and despised, her fur prickled and bristled and her voice was a low growl,

"Nothing! Leave me alone!" Even as she spoke the spiteful words, somewhere inside Jace protesting was the polite and motherly woman that had been raised out on the Arctic snow.

To be a part of the pack, especially as a high ranking member, it meant really being active around the other canines. Hotaru wasn't the best with social situations, a lot of subtle conversational clues were lost on her. Half of all conversations were through body language, something Hotaru could show but not receive. It made interacting with other's awkward and strange, almost unpleasant at times. Hotaru's near self exile in her first few months had been a combination of the awkward feelings, deep trust issues, and grief. Now with two of the three factors diminished, if not gone entirely, it was time for her to get over the last hurdle.

Quick steps, almost stampeding through the village, suddenly danced in one place and a low growl pierced the air. Hotaru halted, her own heckles raised and her tail shot into the air. Immediate dislike for the new female implanted itself into the grey wolf and she made no moves to hide or quell her anger. Hotaru was the higher ranking wolf and she would get the respect she deserved. "Who do you think you are, newcomer, to treat a Tessitore di Sogno that way?" Anger rippled through Hotaru's voice and her lips pulled back into a low growl of her own. The blind female's ears strained forward and her whole body commanded respect from the other.

Despite Hotaru's ferocity and anger, this was not how she wanted to greet the new members of d'Arte. Hotaru wanted to become their role model, someone they could look to for help. Yet that thought was drowned by her overcompensating need to be respected despite her disability.

The other woman moved to mirror her aggressive stance and Jace's eyes blazed. The fur along her spine stiffened and bristled and her hands swung perilously close to the sheaths containing her knives. It wouldn't take much to push her over the edge and provoke her to attack this woman who she had never even met before. Her black lips curled back to reveal sharp teeth. Unknown to Jace, who hadn't yet realised, all this posturing and posing was wasted on a blind woman who could no more see her threatening than she could see the sun that was beginning to peek above the trees.

But then maybe there was some semblance of control still left within her and she managed to turn her body away from this confrontation which had escalated extremely quickly. The arctic woman swallowed back her pride and instinctive want to challenge any who threatened her, she had no doubt within herself that she could beat this woman into the ground and leave her gasping but that was not the point, it wouldn't prove anything and would probably get them exiled from Cercatori, so instead she simply said,

"My name is Jace Wolfe." Without waiting for the other's response she took off into the forest, her feet pounding against the floor with all the strength and speed she could muster from her exhausted body. It was better this way, she could live to fight another day at least, in a metaphorical sense.

Hotaru was proud and her pride was getting the best of her. It was clear that the other wolf was in distress about something. She smelled strange and her words were terse. Hotaru didn't need eyes to know that the other probably had an angry figure and showed no respect. It was a situation that called for the blind female's ususal tacts and grace. But anger won out and Hotaru's temper sky rocketed. The master ranked wolf assumed a dominant posture and anger rippled off her body. Amber eyes seethed with rage and showed no sign of their ailment. Ever fiber of Hotaru's being demanded to be submitted too.

Footsteps alerted Hotaru to the change in the newcomer's position, but they did not retreat. Instead, she introduced herself with as much fire as Hotaru felt and stalked off before the blind female could do anything to stop her. Hotaru growled and snorted before she turned back to her house. Whatever was with that female, Hotaru no longer cared. She would remember the disrepect that the other had showed.
