Beautiful Body
#1
Dalgina stood before a pool of water, staring at her reflection. It wasn't much, plain dark brown eyes peeking out from beyond a curtain of long straight black hair. The rest of her body was dark as well, a soft glowing ebony. There was no color on her body anywhere. The only place where there was any color at all was on her neck where she wore the now collared stone and wood necklace from Aylu and the snowflake pendant she'd carved, one for each sibling so they'd always be close. The snowflake was rather dull and simple as well, nothing more than a rough outline of what she knew snow to look like, coming out from one of her first attempts at carving.

She looked down at her dark form. It allowed her to move around without being noticed, which was certainly a good thing. Dalgina didn't want too much attention. She looked like Papa too, a thought that made her tail wag. She still felt that she needed something more though. Something to reflect what she saw in the world. Something pretty. Glancing down Dalgina smiled as a small purple flower registered with her. Gently she picked it, sticking it in her hair. There! She leaned over, looking in the water again to see her reflection. The flower tumbled down, floating in the water. That wasn't what she wanted! Huffing a little Dalgina bent down to pick it up and try again.

For once, Temo had decided to leave his shop and get some fresh air. He had been so engrossed with his work for the past few weeks that he had almost forgotten what it was like to walk through the trees, listening to the forest noises, sniffing at the smells that floated by on the breeze, and just having a look around.

The loam that coated the forest floor was soft and easy on his feet unlike the hard surface that he had been standing on in his shop for days on end. He let the smells of the forest fill his nose and the forest sounds fill his ears as he walked along and for the moment, forgot about his shop and the work within.

It was not long before the sounds of a bubbling stream filtered into his ears and he decided he could use a drink of fresh, cool water. Temo changed his course and followed his hears to the inviting water. It was not long before his feet had brought him close to the water when he heard someone at the creek huff at something. Temo recognized who was at the creek ahead of him and that something was troubling her, Hi Dalgina, what is wrong?

Dalgina fidgeted with the flower in her hand, trying to twist it so that it would stick in her hair properly. No matter how she tried though, it didn't last, always tumbling back out. Dalgina was near tears with frustration when a voice called behind her. Turning around Dalgina blinked her eyes. The comforting form of her papa stood there, concern etched on his face. Embarrassed to be caught doing something so silly Dalgina let the flower fall to the ground. It was ridiculous, getting all worked up over a flower. If she was more mature, it wouldn't have happened.

Dalgina stood there trembling for a moment before running over to Papa. Throwing her arms around him she cried a little, body shaking. Dalgina didn't stand out like her other siblings did. She didn't have the pretty coat patterns, or the bright look that they held. She didn't hold their confidence, easily backing down from things out of nervousness. On top of it, the stupid flower was refusing to behave. She was having a miserable time.

With ears that drooped and tail that also drooped as Temo felt the sadness flow through him when his daughter's distress hit him. It bothered him when any of his children were unhappy and he strove to try and bring a smile back to their muzzles. Sometimes he was not successful, but that did not stop him from trying again when the time arose.

This was one of those times that one of his children needed comforting and help. As always when this happens, Temo wondered if he would be able to help and he hoped that he would be successful. It was always a worry for him if he was doing right or making things worse when it came to his pups and raising them.

When the crying child ran to him and put her arms around him, his arms curled around her shoulders and held her close against him in, what he hoped was a comforting hug. Now, now, tell daddy what has you so troubled and in tears. he said, his voice quiet so as not to cause more stress to the child in his arms. He saw the flower floating away in the water and could guess at the issue, but he wanted Dalgina to voice what was bothering her.

Papa's arms wrapped around her body as Dalgina cried. It didn't seem like it would stop. It was a silly thing to cry over, despite how frustrated she felt. Head hidden in her fur she let the worries leave her. It was alright. She was safe with Papa. No matter how poorly she felt, she knew he would make everything better. As long as he was there her world would be alright. Dalgina knew that there were frightening things out in the world, but as far as she knew her parents could take care of it all. Closing her eyes she just let the warmth flood through her, idly noting their matching fur.

Asked what was wrong Dalgina blushed. It wasn't something she really wanted to talk about. Shaking her head she held onto him tighter. Thinking about it just made her feel terrible. The flower had refused to stay, and the plain colors...But telling that to Papa seemed wrong. He had black fur like her after all. Saying that she didn't like it would almost be mean. Besides, it wasn't really the black fur that was the problem. It was that she didn't look pretty. I'm...not pretty. Did she say that out loud? It was embarrassing, but the truth.

It was almost quiet except for the forest sounds and the muffled sniffles of his sad and crying daughter. The sunlight flickered around them as a breeze gently meandered by fluttering the tree leaves that was over them. It felt like the forest around them figured that with dad there to help the child, that everything would be ok, as if dad can fix anything.

Other than his query, Temo stayed quiet and let Dalgina answer in her own time. He was in no hurry and it would do her good to cry until she got it all out of her system instead of bottling it up inside. He decided that this was one of those times that just being there was more important than getting her to talk about something that she was balking at telling.

He had seen her fussing with something while looking into the water and wondered if that might have been part of the problem. Then it was out, in a sob broken voice, Dalgina had answered his question. As thoughts milled around his head as he pondered what to say, Temo's eyes followed the flower as it slowly drifted down the stream lazily spinning in the current. You are pretty, he said, hoping this would be the right thing to say, That flower also knew you are pretty, even prettier than it. That is why it would not stay in your hair, it did not want to be out shown.

Papa stayed quiet for a while after she spoke. He must have agreed with her words. Probably trying to think how to say that he hadn't wanted to tell her that she wasn't pretty, that everyone in the family knew it. She felt so horrible. Her tail tucked between her legs, the tears continuing to stream against the black fur. It was just so painful, thinking about it. Perhaps appearance didn't matter that much. It was everything to Dalgina though. She just absorbed the pictures. Images of what she saw filled her dreams. She worked to capture the colors in her mind. It reflected in how she saw herself, devoid of what she chased after.

The sobs stilled as his voice came through, deep and calm. It was relaxing, assuring her that everything was alright. Looking up Dalgina smiled a little through the tears. Really? A flower jealous of her. It was silly. A tiny laugh escaped, looking back to watch the flower drifting away. It would be gone soon. She glanced down at her small dark form. The fur was glossy, absorbing the light as it struck her. A void that took all the color in. I don't feel pretty.

This was a difficult subject for him to talk about. He really had no experience discussing and trying to get someone to change their view about themselves. Early in his life, even Temo thought himself as ugly and not appealing to anyone, especially the fairer sex. The rejection that he felt in his younger days was the main reason that he decided to leave his birth pack and head off alone into the woods and world beyond the mountains.

Temo was quiet for a bit, probably too quiet for too long as his thoughts searched for the right words. He was not sure of what to say, even though he had the same feelings as she did when he was her age, no one ever dispelled them. It was Jace, his beautiful Jace, that had slowly turned his own thoughts around to the better.

His thoughts slowly coalesced into words that he desperately hoped would be the right words. He did not want to make things worse, only better. Everyone is beautiful and special in their own way. And when someone tells you different, it means that they are not looking hard enough, even when it is one's own thoughts. There was doubt in his thoughts that his fatherly advice was sufficient.

Papa was silent again. The tears were drying slowly. It took time for them to fade away completely. A wet patch marked where the tears had run through her fur, looking rather silly. She wasn't exactly at her best, hair disheveled and form shaking slightly. Crying always left her feeling exhausted afterwards. Dalgina looked up, hoping that he had something to say. That he would go ahead and make everything better like he was supposed to.

It was a long time before he finally spoke. Everyone was beautiful? Dalgina looked down, considering. It was true, she was drawn to beauty in all forms. A couple times she'd been shot down for what she had decided was pretty, including a weed that someone else had pulled up and killed. Nodding her head she looked up, a bright smile on her face. Thanks Papa. She hadn't been sure, but now she was. It was okay.

His face brightened up as he saw that Dalgina's tears had dried up. The forest around them seemed to get happier too, as if they were, in some way, connected to the feelings of father and daughter. Even the creek seemed to bubble with renewed happiness. A smile spread on Temo's muzzle to follow her smile. This was one of those happy moments that a father hopes these situations turns into. A happy moment for both father and child. It warmed his heart to the core that even with his inexperience, he was still able to bring a smile to her face.

His arms pulled the daughter that looked like a clone of himself into a tight, fatherly hug for a few moments and then he relaxed his arms loosening the grip but not letting her go. One of his hands ruffled the fur on the top of her head with gentle, fatherly love. Now, that is the happy girl I love to see, he said at the same time as he ruffled the fur on her head, in a quiet, gentle and in the fatherly "I love you" way that fathers use with their children during moments like this.

A smile echoed her own, brightening Dalgina up. Her tail lifted from the curled position it had taken against her legs, daring to move slightly. She still wasn't perfectly happy, but she definitely felt more cheerful than before. The moodiness had come in on a wave, one that she didn't perfectly understand. Her appearance did worry her, but not to the point of tears. Not like this. She felt rather disastrous for putting on such a large scene over it.

A quiet chuckle escaped from Dalgina as he ruffled her silken fur. Ducking her head down a little she looked up, smiling at him. I love you Papa. She always would. He always knew the right thing to say to make everything better. Wrapping her arms tight around him Dalgina leaned into the hug again, tail wagging behind her.

A flock of crows flew over head in a cacophony of caws as the birds called to each other. The cloud black birds moved off and landed in a tree, their calls still audible in the distance. A few other birds went about their business around them as others sang their songs while hiding in the trees and bushes. A breeze drifted around them and tickled their fur before drifting off to play with some leaves.

I love you, too he gave his love to his daughter. Then he fell quiet because he did not want the moment to end. This was one of those moments that makes fatherhood all the better and temo felt proud that he had managed it. A moment that will be kept in his heart and remembered forever.

The flower now gone downstream and out of site and Dalgina feeling much better, Temo considered the plans he had for the day. His thoughts then threw them out the proverbial window in favor of more important things in life, mainly family stuff. His head bent down so his eyes could look at his daughter, Did you have any plans today? he queried her wondering if she would want to go do something with her father.

Lifting her head Dalgina watched the flock of black birds lift off noisily, scattering from the area. The rest of the world moved on as her tears dried, oblivious to the sorrow that had resided there just moments before. Neither of them spoke. comfortable to just stand there and absorb in what was around them. The noisy activity of the other critters wrapped around them like a thick blanket, assuring them that everything was just fine.

Asked if there were any plans for the day Dalgina shook her head. Most days she just spent drawing and painting, but she didn't feel much like doing that today. Her moods affected her art greatly. Even with being calmed down now, she didn't find herself drawn to doing anything, just wanting to relax and be herself. There was no particular need to get it done. Her art wasn't incredible after all. Just something she enjoyed.

With the distress of his daughter and bringing her tears to a halt and a smile to her muzzle, Temo had forgotten the reason that he had gone to the stream. He no longer needed a drink of the cool water that was flowing near by them. His thirst was forgotten and he was not bothered by that fact. The time he was spending away from his shop and the town was doing him some good and he did not want to return at that moment. It was nice being out and breathing in the fresh air instead of the dry, dust laden air that was in his shop.

Now that Dalgina was all smiles and happy again, he could continue on the walk that he was originally on when he found her in need of fatherly advice and help. As with Dalgina feeling better now, Temo was also feeling better that he was able to help. With the sadness behind them, he thought about continuing with his walk through the trees. I was on a walk for some fresh air and to get away from the shop for a while when I found you, would you like to join me?

She was content to stay where she was, simply nestled into Papa's body. It was safe there, secure from the rest of the world. Dalgina might be getting older, but part of her still believed that her parents could take away all the pain that was there and make it better. Her tail beat gently as he held her close, the rest of the world continuing on it's way. The quiet gurgle of the stream filled the background, oblivious of the pain it had granted her when she'd gazed upon her reflection.

Dalgina pulled herself up, looking at Papa. His brown eyes were so soft, assuring her that everything was okay as his gentle voice filled the air. Okay. A walk would be nice. She pulled herself away, keeping her grip on Papa's hand. Her eyes swallowed in the green land around them as they began to walk, birds chirping and flitting through the air above. They always seemed to be so busy, off doing something. What were they up to all the time?

Temo was overjoyed to find out that Dalgina would go on the walk with him. It seemed that Dalgina and her siblings were growing up fast and soon would be off on adventures or raising families of their own with no more time to spend with their father. That brought a wave of sadness to flow through him, but it did not last long because he could not loose the happiness that he had gained this day.

It was with a happy heart and much joy in his being that Temo grasped Dalgina's hand in his and matched his stride to her stride so as not to make her have to walk fast or run to keep up. He was silent for a while enjoying the moment as they walked and the birds skittered around them keeping what they thought would be a safe distance from the two.

After they walked together in silence watching the birds and the occasional rabbit that they came up on. The occasional breeze drifting by to ruffle their fur and the leaves on the near by bushes felt good as it took away some of the heat. It was with a quiet voice so as not to disturb the forest around them or the moment, So, what have you been up to lately? he asked his daughter while they walked.

Dalgina watched everything around them, her heart settled once more. She didn't see the future, or dwell on the past. The dark female just dreamed of life as it was, or perhaps how it was in her dreams. The light filtered through the trees in streams, flickering over the forest floor. It was a beautiful sight, at times the light overwhelming the shadows and creating luminous patches to walk through. Humming happily she swung their hands a little, looking around.

Turning her head she smiled brightly up at Papa. I've been drawing. Mahn put some of my drawings up in the house. There's a lot of different things to draw. There's a whole flower field here! It still awed the wintery child how much life was around them. She'd been born when everything was resting. To see the world bursting with color was incredible. Keldava shifted, so we're going out for a hike.

At Dalgina's mention of her drawing and that some were hanging up in the house, memories sprang up in Temo's mind. Memories of the times that they spent drawing together. When she was still a pup and trying to draw with her paws. He felt she was a budding artist then when her drawings made with her paws were better than his made with his hands. It was joy that he felt inside knowing that his prodigy seemed to have found her calling at an early age. It was a long time before he had found something that he was decent at and enjoyed doing.

He returned his memories to Dalgina's drawings that his lovely mate, Jace, had hung up throughout the house. The drawings that would put a smile in his heart as he looked at them whenever he went in and about the house. They always made him feel better even if he was not in a good mood. Your drawings are beautiful and you are getting real good at it.

He chuckled a little at her excitement over the field of flowers. He had seen it in passing from time to time, Yes, i saw thee flowers, they are pretty and colorful. he nodded his head a bit in agreement of her excitement. After spending most of his time contained in the town where they lived and he worked, he had not gotten out much, There are places to go hiking? he asked curiously as there was once upon a time in ages past where he had gone hiking from time to time.

A broad smile spread across the black wolf's face at Papa's compliment. Dalgina spent a lot of time drawing, wishing to capture what she saw around her. She could spend hours at a time fiddling around and drawing, working to make something perfect. His words told her that maybe, just maybe, she was capturing a small fraction of that spirit. It was good to know that her wish was being accomplished in just one small part.

She looked up at Papa, wondering why he found her excitement over the flowers amusing. Was it silly to be so excited by it? Dalgina had just found it so incredibly wondrous that such variety existed in color. She could reach out and cradle each one, enjoying the scents and feel of the petals. Those weren't always the same either. Still, Dalgina noted his laughter and decided that she wouldn't tell any of her friends about the fascination the flower field held for her. Yes. There's some fields.

The world moved on around the two luperci as father and daughter walked together winding their way through the trees. None of the wildlife seemed to not give them a glance or even knew they were there unless the wolves got too close causing the critters to scamper away to a safe distance. His head slowly nodded some as he thought about the flower fields, hiking and also if some time in the future if Jace might want to check out the hiking possibilities there. Or at least visit the fields with him to have a look at the flowers.

Except for the forest noises around them, it remained quiet as Temo was at a loss for anything to say. Having spent most of his childhood and young adulthood keeping company only with books instead of others in his birth pack, he was not a very good conversationalist. As his thoughts returned to the here and now, he wondered if she had any questions or something she might want to talk about. He decided to remain quiet for the time being and just enjoy the walk with his daughter as she was growing up fast and too soon be leaving home as an adult.
