The Patter of Little Paws
#1
Things were getting steadily better for the golden Epsilon. She and Augustus had spoken of their issues and were working on them, relieving the young wolf of the pressures and cloud of uncertainty which had been smothering her since the start of their mateship. She knew that Augustus did care for her, enough to forgive her for the indiscretion with Zalen. Her belly was full, her figure filling out again to the healthy shape she'd had before the incident, and her coat had retained its golden shine. The dreaded heat scent had left her completely weeks before, and she could relax around her mate.

The girl was missing her pack. During her heat Augustus had kept them in a different den and she hadn't ventured out much to meet anyone besides Tharin. She had kept to that den, and then either in the communal den or the outskirts of the territory afterward. She felt like a Pariah, not an Epsilon, but it was entirely her fault. She'd been too afraid to approach Zalen or Titania since that tense day, scared that they would still be angry at her or bitter. While she could tell that the Alphess was in heat and was happy for her, that didn't necessarily mean that all was well between the two females. She missed Soran and Shandom as well, and her adopted sister, Insomnia.

She knew that she had to focus on happier things, and mend the distance between herself and her packmates instead of whining about it. Since the arrival of the she-wolf Kiara, there had been the smell of puppies in New Dawn's territory, and Ciara had yet to meet them. A maternal and loving wolf deep-down, she wanted to get to know the pup and offer to babysit should Kiara ever need it. Other than just loving pups in general and not being blessed with the opportunity to be near them often in her life, the golden yearling wanted practice for the day she birthed a litter for Augustus.

Pulling herself from her spot in the den, Ciara shook out and then preened her fur, wanting to look her best and not quite so disheveled. She then trotted out of the den and to the nearby stream, wetting her muzzle and drinking her fill. She was a little hungry, but too anxious and hopeful to meet the mother and her pup. So she walked up to the crest near the communal den and sat back on her haunches. Tipping her nose to the sky, the golden girl released a song for Kiara and her pup, but welcoming other members of the pack as well. She just wanted to be surrounded by family.

sorry for the wait

Sapphire eyes watched as Lucia chewed ferociously on her rag doll. Kiara was worried about how the sudden change in lifestyle would affect the young puppy psychologically. Although New Dawn was a "feral" pack and lived like how Kiara's birth pack did, they weren't Lucia's birth pack. The parklands were foreign to the puppy and she her brother had disappeared. The young mother couldn't help but wonder how Lucia felt about that. Did the puppy blame Kiara, did she hate her mother for moving without Kohaku? What did Lucia think about the luperci? Did she wish to become one or even realize that she wasn't one? Would Kiara's own daughter hate her when she realized the truth? All of these questions plagued the white female as she watched her daughter play innocently.

A howl broke through the arctic female's train of thought and white ears lifted hight to listen. The caller was just outside of the communal den and specifically asked for Kiara and Lucia. Curious, Kiara stood and strolled outside. Lucia, who had grabbed her doll by one of its limbs, followed her in her mother's wake with a huge grin and curious eyes. Lucia, although shy at first, seemed to have gotten used to pack life and had opened herself up to the other wolves.

Sanding before the den was a golden wolf, black fur coloring the female's back and outlining her figure. Surprisingly, the female smelled less of the pack than Kiara would have expected. Even so, she had to be a wolf of New Dawn. To Kiara's knowledge, outsiders were not allowed on the pack lands. Lucia, who didn't recognize the female, ducked between her mother's legs but didn't hide completely. The young mother, unsure of how to treat the stranger kept her posture relaxed. She would have been more submissive if Lucia wasn't beneath her. "Hello, I don't believe we have met. I'm Kiara and this is Lucia. You called for us?"

Ciara had paced nervously while she waited to see if Kiara would come out with her pup or not. She sat back on her haunches and stared intently at the mouth of the den, her tawny ears flicking with concern. The Epsilon knew it was silly but she couldn’t help but worry that Titania and Zalen told the rest of the pack what happened between them. Maybe the others considered she and Augustus rebellious and insubordinate. Maybe they thought Caira an almost-homewrecker. The mature wolf Ciara was growing into knew that it was all silly, but the insecure little girl inside of her couldn’t help it.

Needless to say she was very relieved when Kiara came out of the den. Her tail immediately began to thump against the ground and her ears perked forward. She smiled at the woman’s question and focused on the little pup cowering behind its mother. Neither of them was showing Ciara the respect an Epsilon necessarily deserved, but Ciara was not as strict as her mate. She would allow a slip in protocol from others here and there, especially when the wolves in question didn’t know her. Besides, the pup that was before her was adorable enough to quell any offense the Epsilon might take.

"I am Ciara, mate of Augustus and Epsilon of New Dawn," she said in a soft, but very clear voice. She stood and moved closer to the two, dipping her head down in greeting to the two wolves before her. She glanced to Kiara and offered her a polite smile before peering around the mother to see the pup. "That means I protect us from bad things, and help find food for us," she told the tiny pup in hopes of comforting her and making her more likely to take to Ciara. The golden girl wanted to be near the pup so badly, any pups, and even in her youth ached for her own.

"I was hoping you ladies would spend the afternoon with me? I’d very much like to get to know you both."

Bad post, sorry

Kiara and Lucia were greeted with a bright smile and a wagging tail as they emerged from the den. The unfamiliar female seemed almost relieved, her gentle features softening and her manners polite. It wasn't until the female spoke that Kiara realized her error. Kiara's overall posture showed no hint of dominance and could be considered submissive, on the other hand she wasn't submitting fully. Ciara was an epsilon, far above her in rank and deserved more than the arctic female was putting forward. The young mother was worried about being chastised, but she couldn't show proper submission with a puppy beneath her. Even if they were pack, Ciara was still a stranger. Two instincts fought as Kiara bowed her head and dropped her gaze. "Nice to meet you."

Ciara came closer and the white female gave a smile before glancing down at her daughter. The other explained to the puppy what being an epsilon meant, something Kiara was grateful for. Slowly, the little puppy emerged from beneath her mother and stared up at the colorful adult. Lucia looked back at her mother, seeking strength and approval. "Go on Lucia, say hello." Glancing back, the tiny female mumbled a hello before ducking behind her mother again. The white mother chuckled; a warm smile crossed her face. Lucia wasn't used to strangers yet and Kiara hoped that her shyness would just be a phase that the puppy would grow out of.

"We would love to spend the afternoon with you" Kiara liked the idea of spending time with Ciara, especially because the female had forgiven Kiara's rude behavior. On top of that, getting to know her fellow pack mates would be good for Lucia.

Ciara relaxed a little when Kiara lowered her head. She wasn’t as strict as her mate was when it came to showing the proper subordination, but still expected to be shown a different sort of respect that a subordinate got. Her tail began to wag steadily when the puppy, Lucia, mumbled a hello to her. Just having the puppy’s attention had her own hormones soaring and she released a happy whimper at the acknowledgement. Her tail wagged even more, and she had to keep licking her lips to ward off the instinctive response of saliva in her mouth. She didn’t want to appear like some drooling beast to the kind little thing after all.

When Kiara consented to spend the afternoon with her, Ciara dropped herself down in the grass and perked her ears towards Lucia. The Epsilon wanted to be a puppy-sitter, and a mother someday, so she didn’t want to intimidate the little girl with her size. Now that she was on eye-level with the pup, she decided to learn a little about both of the females. ”Where do you two come from?” she asked pleasantly, ears ever pushed forward. As she waited for a reply she couldn’t help but imagine having her own pups someday – but she and Augustus would have to reach a lot of crucial points in their new relationship before that could happen.

”I come from across the water.”

The young mother noticed how the epsilon looked at Lucia with a hungry eye. It was the look of a female who desired a litter of her own. When the puppies were younger, Kiara had scorned such looks. In fact, Kiara had been so protective of her puppies that she had prevented all but other puppies from entering her den. Strangers or friends, it had made no difference to the new mother. She had greedily kept her puppies to herself; and perhaps if she had done differently, Kohaku would have been safe in New Dawn as well.

Rather than scorn Ciara's desires or fight them, Kiara simply ignored the look. It was one she had once held and Lucia was old enough to interact freely with the older wolves. Ciara, if anything, would be extremely cautious around Lucia if she was anything like the arctic female. True as any wolf, the epsilon laid down on the grass and relaxed and watched the puppy with a kind intensity. Kiara moved to the side, completely revealing the tiny female who looked about in confusion. Kiara took Ciara's lead and settled into the grass herself. Lucia quickly followed her mother's example, but stuck close to the white wolf's side. "I originally came from the arctic, but I had joined Ichika no Ho-en at the beginning of the last fall." Kiara turned her sapphire eyes to her daughter and asked gently, "Where was Ichika?" Lucia tipped her head to the side as she tried to remember the words. At last they came to her and she piped, "Forest!" Kiara nodded approvingly and Lucia's tiny tail began to wag excitedly.

Ciara's mention of the water was a little confusing, even for the arctic wolf. She had heard several canines mention that they came from across the ocean, but Kiara had no idea where they would have originated or how they came to Nova Scotia. Kiara had never seen a boat before and knew almost nothing of europe. She had heard that the places across the ocean were supposedly more "civilized," but what that meant was lost of the uninfected female. Lucia, who was feeling a little braver asked, "How you do that?"

Ciara was doing her best not to stare at the puppy like a creeper. She couldn’t help that her mottled eyes were drawn to the tiny wisp of a girl. Her white coat made Ciara wonder if that’s what her pups with Augustus would look like, so brilliant and dazzling in the lazy light of the afternoon sun. She smiled when the girl was asked the question about Ichika, and chuckled at her reply. She briefly wondered what the other wolves in the pack had done after it’d been disbanded – not that she knew any of them closely, but she had seen a few here and there.

Her eyes lit up when Lucia spoke to her, and her tail gave a few automatic swishes across the grass. ”Well, it wasn’t very far from here. When I was little, my mother and I hopped across big chunks of ice with some caribou and made it to this side,” she explained, wondering if the little girl would understand. She did her best not to let her eyes cloud up, for after the day spent hopping across the ice Ciara’s mother had taken an injury, and had died shortly thereafter. From that point on at the age of a mere six months, the Epsilon had been left on her own and had traveled for another six, painful months before finding the borders of New Dawn.

For a few moments she waited to see if Lucia had any replies to her little tale. Then she rested her head on her paws and smiled to both mother and daughter. ”How are you liking it here in New Dawn so far?” she asked the two of them. She hoped they liked it here and intended to stay, for she wanted the chance to spend time with them both.

Lucia and Kohaku had been infants when Ichika disbanded and had never really met any of its former members. They only knew of Ichika from the stories Kiara had told them before bed time. Even so, Kiara was certain that the puppies hadn't really understood what they were told. It pained the young mother's heart to know that her puppies would never know their birth pack and all memory of their youngest days would soon be gone if it wasn't already.

Kiara smiled a little as Ciara chuckled at Lucia's response. Because she was a puppy, she had a simplistic view on the world. The female's smile grew as her daughter became interested in the higher ranking wolf. She began to question Ciara who seemed only too delighted to answer. Even Kiara became interested as the other described her travels. The arctic female had lived almost her entire life in the tundra, but had never been close enough to the sea. She didn't know one could cross such a vast expanse of water by hoping across the ice. Although, it did kind of make sense. As any puppy, Lucia was quick to question her word and she showered Ciara with questions. Lucia asked what caribou were, what ice was, and what was on the other side of the water.

"Caribou are very big prey. Like the deer mommy brings to you, only much bigger. Ice is cold water that is hard like the ground. You will get to see it when you get older." Lucia's large puppy eyes became saucers as she listened to the fascinating details about her world. Kiara left the last question for Ciara to answer, seeing as even she didn't know about the lands past the ocean.

Once Lucia's curiosity was satisfied, the focus of the conversation turned back to Kiara and New Dawn. "It's a lovely place and we have adjusted quite well. A pack like this...it's been a long time since I was in this type of pack. However, I like it. The atmosphere reminds me of my birth pack. It's very comfertable."

OOC here!

While Kiara wondered and pined for the birth pack of her pups Ciara was quite content never to revisit her own. While she never had a pack, she and her mother had stayed in one area for the first six months of her life, happy except for the occasional visits from her evil, abusive father. He had tried to kill Ciara more than once, and mercilessly beat her mother. It was because of him that she’d never go across the water again, unless perhaps her mate went with her. Her eyes grew a little dark as she thought of him, and she gave a little shake of her head to push him out of her mind again.

During Lucia’s questioning, Ciara studied the mother between answers and realized that she had the same colouring as Augustus. Were they from the same cruel land? Her mate had only just recently told her of the harshness of life there, how he had suffered and thought nothing of it because all others suffered there. He was hard and cold, but she knew there was warmth there and he was beginning to open up to her. She blushed as she thought of their night on the beach, and realized it was a completely inappropriate thought to have in the presence of the mother and child.

“It’s a lot like here,” she said to Lucia, her voice soft with memory. “The water is all around, but the land has many trees, just like here. There are lots of moose there, and not nearly as many signs of humans unless you go to the island where the city is.” She hoped that her words were easy enough to understand for the puppy, but she was explaining for Kiara’s benefit too. Even though her birth place, Newfoundland, held many bad memories for her…she couldn’t deny that the place was a part of her.
