the road goes and i am finding home in it

Rays of decadent sunlight were spilling over the dry, wooden floorboards of the room. It flooded the walls covered in rustic blue paint that was peeling to reveal the yellowing drywall, stained with the test of time, and slowly creeping up the side of the small bed risen from the floor with small, furnished wooden legs. The wall was marked with gashes via the bed's decorative headboard; aside from the small dresser located in the far corner of the room, the window on the left wall, the bed against another wall and the door at the other corner, the room itself was pretty bare. Not that Odebeh minded.
Eyelids fluttered open as his mind hurtled into another conscious state, yesterday's events having worn him out too. He was glad to be able to sleep somewhere warm and comfortable; it had been raining a lot lately, and Odebeh was sure that he stayed outside any longer he would get sick. With a wide yawn, the small pup whined and gave his small body a shake, turning his head to greet the image of the white female sleeping beside him. Instantly a grin shot across his muzzle as he jumped to his paws, almost surprised at the springy feeling of his own weight being bounced back up at him from the mattress. Temporarily distracted by this, Odebeh bounced a couple of times, grin widening, until he had noticed her again.
"Nani! Nani wake up!" Odebeh yipped, tilting his head, his large ears forward and eager for the female's response. Flicking his tail, he took a step forward and nudged her side with his small nose, then stepped back again and resumed jumping on the bed, shouting to awaken the pregnant, white female. "Nani Nani Nani Nani Nani Nani! Wake up wake up! Look, I'm bouncing, Nani! Wake up!"

She was having the dream again, the one that had been plaguing her for the last couple of weeks. It was almost like his hands were on her again, striking against her fur; sometimes when she woke up she could still feel a light ache in her ribs. Pilot had done a very good job of stitching up her sides, but they had only just healed to the point where they didn't hurt when she layed on them. And she had no other option but to lay on her side. It was too uncomfortable to lay on her back or on her stomach.

But this time she was sure she'd felt something. Her eyes snapped open, fur standing on end as she cast her gaze around the immediate area, searching for the red male. There was something unfamiliar about the room she was in, and it took a moment for everything to come back to her. She wasn't downstairs, where she usually slept, and Conri wasn't there. He wasn't coming back. As she realized this her fur flattened. What was Odebeh chattering about? Bouncing? She'd never heard of such a thing, jumping on beds. She'd jumped off a couch once in Citta Umana, back in the old lands, and had almost rebroken her leg...but that was the closest.

"I'm awake, I'm awake..." She mumbled, stretching her legs out both in front of and behind her. His movements didn't jar the bed too much, as Naniko outweighed him by more than a few pounds, but they'd certainly woken her up. Last night he'd been tired, she supposed, and now he was a little more rested. More energetic. "Don't go too high or you'll fly off" She stated, beginning to rise. It wasn't very far to the floor, and she stepped down off of the cushy bed with no difficulty. "You hungry?" She was even a little bit hungry...she'd be able to show him where the food cache was, in the basement.

He continued to bounce up and down on the bed, watching the female beside him gradually awaken until she had finally answered him, stating that she was in fact awake. Extremely pleased by this, he wagged his small tail behind him, resuming to bounce until she had warned him not to get too high or he'd fall off. Suddenly fearful of this, the male whined and stopped bouncing (albeit the few remaining bounces he had left on the bed), watching the female's actions as she stepped down from the bed. Pressing his ears forward and liking this idea, the small pup followed suite, landing with a tiny thump beside her.
Odebeh looked up at her again - he had to, considering she was so much larger than he - and gave a small nod at her question. "Yes! I haven't eaten in a while." The pup grinned and shifted his paws beneath his body, looking from corner to corner around the room, then back to Naniko. He wondered where he would find food here, though. Mother had often provided him sustenance in her milk, or chewed food even; where would he find that here? He was extremely curious about this.

It had been a while since she had taken care of a pup as little as him, but she'd have her own soon enough...this would be good practice. Technically she could have nursed him, but he was getting a little big for that...and she wasn't sure how long her body would produce the milk if she started nursing a pup early. Was there a certain amount that ran out gradually? Or did her body make it? She wasn't sure. Deuce had been able to handle taking Apollo and Sirius when she had been nursing Taliesin and Noah, and this was only one pup.

But would that be weird, getting milk from a stranger? She wasn't sure. Maybe she would suggest the idea later if he didn't like the meat that they had here. Naniko couldn't hunt in her condition, so she relied fully upon the cache of cold meat in the cellar. "It's down a bunch of stairs. You got up them all right...but are you okay with going back down?" She asked, stopping at the top of the first staircase. If he could get down these stairs then the basement steps would be no problem.

the road goes and i am finding home in it

Even now, the small male could hear his stomach gurgling with hunger. The thought of it was simply decadent - he had to have something to eat. And if this female would offer him something that was stored away in this big den, this mansion as she called it, it was bound to be something exciting. The small male bounded up beside Naniko again as she stood at the base of the stairs, and he looked down at them, remembering the climb he had made to reach the top. It wasn't so much perilous as it had been tiring. He couldn't remember if he had even done it himself - it was possible that the female had carried him up, maybe he just grew tired from looking at all of the stairs. Or perhaps he actually did climb up all of them. He couldn't remember. Whatever it was, it had simply tuckered him out.
"These?" He asked, looking up at her. "This is no problem!" The small male hadn't seen worse - perhaps the steepest incline he had to scale, and deepest decline he had to climb from, would have been the den entrance that gently sloped upward. But then again, there were lots of rocks around the den, he could have climbed those a few times with his siblings. Yeah. Maybe. Dismissing those thoughts, the brown pup grinned widely at Naniko before looking back at the stairs. Tentatively he reached out, touched one, and clambered onto it. Satisfied with the result and the safety of it all, Odebeh continued this, picking up speed as he moved down the staircase.
Finally, once he reached the bottom (it took him a minute or so to actually get down all of them) he looked back up at Naniko. "Are you coming Nani?"

"Yes, I'm coming" It took her around the same amount of time to get down the stairs, her legs and back protesting with each step, but she managed to get all the way down to the bottom. She still wasn't used to this, things hurting like they did now. She had never gotten this far along in a pregnancy. It figured that the one time things actually had worked out for her, that she hadn't miscarried, that Conri was gone. But at the same time, she was completely sure that she didn't want him back. Their pack was centered around the idea of friendship and pack loyalty; she was sure that even if Conri did come back, he'd be chased out by one of the members.

She made it to the bottom of the stairs, her tail wagging at his enthusiasm. "Only one more set of stairs" She promised. The basement steps had an easier slope to them, and were wider...so it wouldn't be as hard. Her paws took her through several rooms and into the kitchen, where she prodded at the basement door until it opened. "Right this way" She started down these stairs, heading for the hole in the ground in the middle of the room. It was covered up by a sheet of plastic, and she pulled it aside. There was a lot in there today, rabbit, squirrel, and a few birds, and she looked down inside of it. "What do you usually have to eat?"

the road goes and i am finding home in it

Watching her move down the stairs, Odebeh could only imagine how stressful, or painful even, it would be to have to carry that obscene lump in her stomach down with her. He wanted to know so bad what that was - but he couldn't ask, really. It would be rude of him. And what if she got... offended? He didn't want to offend his new friend. He was proud to call her his new friend - she had saved him, after all, so what part of that couldn't make her his friend? He just hoped that she thought the same way about him. He would be devastated to know that she didn't think he was her friend. That would be just horrible!
Odebeh erased these thoughts from his mind as she met him at the bottom, and smiled. One more set of stairs? Piece of cake! He mused and bounced along behind her, until they had reached the door that led to the basement, all the while curiously taking in every corner of his surroundings. The kitchen smelled heavily of food; as well as the door, where he suspected most of the food would be. Watching her push it open, the small male peered down into the dark stairwell, and followed after her to the hole in the middle of the floor. It smelled heavily of wolfcatch now - birds, squirrels, and other small, dead animals.
Odebeh blinked down at it, then looked back at Naniko. "Squirrel?" He blinked again and eagerly looked back into the hole, but didn't want to go ahead and snatch something up. Instead, he shyly waited for Naniko.

I'm baaaaack! But with extremely slow college internets ;_;

The hole was pretty deep, but she had rigged a way for the wolves to get food out of it anyway...as long as it wasn't too heavy. Usually it wasn't; they couldn't fit that much food into it. There was a piece of wood at the bottom of the hole with a few small pieces of rope coming up from it, out of the hole. The food sat on top of the piece of wood, inside the plastic-lined hole.

She gripped the rope in her teeth, pulling up and backwards, lifting the piece of wood like an elevator so that the meat was almost level with the top of the hole. "Grab whatever you like. There's at least a few squirrels in there" She said around the piece of rope in her mouth.
