I love you this much

Just a few days after the pack meeting, Willow was out and running wild again. It wasn't any deficit on Deuce's part, it was just Willow's natural curiousity and excitement. Most times her brother accompanied her, but today she'd slipped out on her own again. She chased snowshoe hares across the forest of Oberon's Spring; they excited her the way they ran from her. Some day she would catch one and take it home, and show mommy that she could hunt as good as Tal could. She was almost three months old now, and growing like a weed.

She was distracted by a squirrel, who hadn't seen the girl coming. Ears pinned back, she lashed out at the squirrel in fright. By sheer chance, she caught the squirrel by the throat. Her eyes widened as the squirrel fought her viciously, scratching at her face. She shook her head, her jaws remaining clamped around her prize. She heard a tiny pop, and the assault on her face stopped. She dropped the body, staring at it in surprise. She hadn't expected to catch it, hadn't even known it was there. But she'd caught it, all on her own. She rubbed at her face with a paw, where the small creature had scratched her.

Joy flooded the small Soul girl. She grinned suddenly, letting out a howl of victory. She'd caught it herself, all on her own. She was a good hunter! Mommy and Tal would be proud of her, and so would Coli. She'd caught the beast all by herself. All on her own without any help. She picked up the body in her mouth, tasting the hot blood on her lips. It was good.

The male wandered slowly through the lands, digesting the thoughts that swivelled around in his mind day and night. He was done with Firefly. He was not sure if she had a finger in this shit with the disappearance of his two sons, but the way she had launched at him left no choice. The Lilium had tried and failed. They were not meant to be together. It would be better this way. She had finally moved out and refused to have anything to do with him. He would have to search her out anyway and announce that he did not wish to continue this mateship. It was good to finally accept the facts. Haku was not meant to be chained down like this. Even if he wanted, he could not devote himself to anyone. He was trying to be a father, but he knew it was only a question about time before he would search out the comfort in one or several females, none of them would carry the name Firefly. That was just how the chocolate and cream male was. He was loyal to his pack, but that was it. A familiar scent reached his nostrils and he automatically changed his direction, following the scent he would soon realize was his middle daughter, Willow Soul. When her face appeared in his brain, he picked up his speed. Oberon’s Spring was not a good place to be for a small child. What if she went ahead and drowned herself? Not good.

He had not been a good father for any of his children as of yet, but he had been very busy with his own personal drama. Haku Soul had brought Willow and Deuce here to keep a watchful eye over them and make sure they were safe, but he had not yet visited them. He did not wish to do so either, because Coli was not living with them. The brown brute wondered if the pale woman hated him for what he had done to Coli. It was far from a secret any longer. That retarded little girl, why had he not simply left it to the demon to properly finish it off. It would have scarred his more sane part for life, but it would have been much easier that way. His ears perked at the sound of a howl. His body stiffened for a second before he recognized joy in the sound. Apparently the child was having a grand time, whatever she was doing. He drifted closer to the sound and laid his brilliantly blue eyes on a female miniature of himself. What was it with the girls and their resemblance to him? Willow was no secret though, and with Firefly floating out of the picture, he could do whatever without having to face her anger. His daughter had caught a squired. To be honest, Haku was impressed. Squirrels were hard in general to catch, and even more so for a small child like herself. ”Wow, excellent work, Willow. I don’t think I have ever managed to catch a squirrel in my life.”

A voice came and Willow turned, her prize hanging from her mouth. Haku, her father, stood there watching her and speaking to her. She grinned around her prize, then set it down, licking the blood from her lips, raising her baby blue gaze to her father. He'd never caught a squirrel? She nudged her prize towards him, her tail wagging. "You can have it, Daddy. I wanna take a rabbit home to momma like Tal does. Tal is a good hunter. I wanna grow up and be just like him."

Her brow furrowed for a moment, and she regarded him a little more seriously. "Why does Firefly hate Momma? Momma told me she helped her before, that she used to be leaders with Firefly's momma. Why is Firefly so mean?" She didn't really understand what had been announced at the pack meeting. She didn't understand the boys, her half brothers, were gone missing. If she'd understood, she would have volunteered to help find them.

He watched in silence when the child turned around by the sound of his voice. Truth be told, the father and daughter did not know each other. They had seen each other twice, which was a pathetically low count, even in Haku’s opinion. He had been busy, and he had not wanted to provoke more anger in his mate by visiting his bastard child and her mother, the woman that had served as the cocoa Lilium’s lover more than once. The child did not back away, nor did her joyful spirit fade from her. That was a good start. She actually grinned at him and laid the dead animal down on the forest floor. Haku was certain that he would be able to get a squirrel if he laid enough effort down into it, but rabbits and other pray were way easier, and they filled the belly at the same time. Haku only hunted for food, unless he was told to find something bigger to pleasure the more twisted part of him. The father watched as the child pushed the squirrel in his direction. He did not understand before she spoke. Heh, that was cute, a gift from daughter to father, a little furry squirrel. So it was probably a rabbit she had been after, but instead she had somehow managed to get hold of the tree climbing creature instead. Well done in every way still, it was quite an achievement for someone her age. Tal was a quiet one, and Haku had not done anything whatsoever to get to know Deuce’s older son.

The adult was about to suggest that he could help her get a rabbit, but then a completely different topic was displayed on the child’s tongue. Haku sighed silently and went to sit next to the little child. Not too close of course, because she might not like that. He knew that at least he wouldn’t. He had not been designed for moments like these, for when the parent had to explain a rather delicate subject to the younger generation because of lack of understanding. It was true what Willow said though. Firefly was indeed mean. A vicious little bitch, if he could be so bold to think so. ”Look, Willow.” If there was someone Firefly hated more than Deuce, it was most likely to be Willow. This was because Haku’s own blood pulsed through the little child. She was a bastard child. ”Firefly does not really hate your Momma-“ The silly naming of Deuce made his tongue want to twist, but he had to keep the conversation on the child’s own level as best as he could. ”Firefly is mean because Firefly is angry at Daddy. Daddy did something very wrong to Firefly, even though Daddy did not mean to. So, it is Daddy that Firefly hates, not you or your Momma.” He felt like a complete lunatic when his words echoed in his head. It was the truth though, or the truth he believed in. Firefly hate had bloomed because of what he had done.

The girl watched as her father came and sat next to her, her tail thumping against the ground lazilly once or twice. His words made her brows furrow as she listened, trying to understand. Grownups were so strange. In her little world, everyone was friends. No one was angry at anyone, except for a little. And they always made up. Firefly hated daddy. That wasn't what Willow had understood talking to the fiery woman. Firefly had called momma bad names, names she got yelled at for repeating.

"What choo do to make her mad? Why can't you all be friends?" She looked up at him, her sky blue eyes serious. "You can give her the squirrel and make her not mad. maybe she's just tired and needs a nap." She unhelpfully tried to give her dad several options of how to make Firefly less angry at everyone.

Everything was simple in a child’s mind. Once Haku too had shared her ability to watch the world with bliss, he supposed, but it was forever gone. He had grown up and become tainted to the very core of his damaged soul. With time, she would learn. With time, she too would lose her inner child. It was a shame, but also extremely necessary for her survival. Haku disliked that Firefly had turned her rage to Deuce and her child. Well, apparently it was mostly Deuce that had received the beating, but it did not make it any better. Firefly was a horrible monster, in many ways the same as him, but more vicious and hungry for instant bloodshed. He was the calmer version of her, though driven by another force that in the end would ruin him and those that loved him. He wished Willow never had been born. He wished she had died in her mother’s womb and ended in the same grave as her brother. If the chocolate man could have had a chat with the fierce woman that held the title as his mate, he would. He knew there would be no point, she would do nothing but rage and drama and throw silly names into his face. Haku had better things to do than to try to reason with an uncontrollable child in an adult female’s body. It was such a shame, but he was the one that had started everything. Was it so terrible that he was taking responsibility for it?

He twisted an ear when the girl’s silly words were given to him. It would be better with peace, but Firefly’s rage was not likely to run out anytime soon. He could never tell the girl the reason for Firefly’s anger. It was because of Willow. The fact that she had been born, the fact that she was here in Dahlia together with her mother, which had once served as Haku’s lover. Instead of serving the sad truth, the father shrugged his shoulders, pretending not to know. Pretending was the only thing he was good at nowadays it seemed. No squirrel or any nap could help. Though, he could easily lead the child into believing it maybe would help. ”Hmm, that’s some good suggestions, Willow. I will give Firefly the squirrel, and afterwards she will take a long nap, so maybe she will feel better when she wakes up.” He shook his fur slightly and decided changing the subject would be a good idea. ”Do you me to help you find a squirrel for mommy?” Get the girl a squirrel, and then escort her home, away from the territory with the dangerous river. He did not love the girl as a father should, but he was not completely indifferent either. She was part of his responsibility and he had accepted that. She would carry on his bloodline when he was gone. He wagged his tail lazily and offered the child a smile, an attempt to encourage the girl.
