Pack hunt time! Joining is of course optional! ^_^

Needless to say, Jefferson wasn't much of a hunter anymore. He could scrounge up the basics for Addison and himself, managed to teach her one thing or another about catching prey, but hadn't even managed the courage to teach her to kill. Regardless, the spring season was already far in bloom; the sun was shining pleasantly in the sky, hanging high above them as noontime approached. It had occurred to him that the pack was growing again, even if slowly and gradually, but despite their still small size, the Patriarch knew little of his underlings. A few he had met in passing, a few others he was not particularly fond of... but most of all, there were a few members who had been around for weeks that he'd hardly seen in action in the least.

Jefferson stood three-legged in the grass, for a moment raising his nose to the air to breathe in the enchanting scents that drifted along with the breeze. It was somewhat warm, good hunting weather. Since the weather was pleasant and the pack could use some practice and cooperation skills, why not test them with a pack hunt? Surely they could take down something big if they worked together... even if the limping cyclops himself wasn't of much use other than being the bystanding tactician and authority. His nose was raised to the wind again, releasing a long, inviting howl into the air. His stomach gurgled alongside, of course. The sound of his call was content, unwavering... somewhat unusual for the gimp, but perhaps it was just the weather.

The silvery blue male had kept his face out of the mainframe for quite a while, accepting new members and drinking until he could barely remember the day before. The road he took along those lines was something that he knew he couldn't continue doing. He'd come to a point where the drinking was almost as bad as the pain he'd felt over losing the women in his life. DaVinci had been sitting on the deck staring out across one of the Mirror Lakes nursing the leftovers of the night before, one hand tracing over the battered remains of his ear as he closed his eyes and sighed. It just had to happen that that exact moment just happened to be when the master decided to call. Growling to himself DaVinci pulled his sorry ass up from the seat and listened for a moment to the call to decipher just where in the hell the good captain was now and where he wanted his little tag along shadow to follow.

The male shifted down to his halfling form, having grown to like the form that actually made him look a little like a wolf and atleast give him roughly the same weight as the others in the pack, even though he still towered above them on his long limbs that tended to give away the mixed heritage for the few that didn't know already. Shaking himself to clear out the fog from his head he trotted off the deck and stretched out his long legs in a ground eating dash across the packlands. Jefferson could be as pissed as he wanted at his second hand man but he couldn't fault him for being late this time atleast.

Slowing down as he found and followed the scent of the gimp to the clearing that he'd chosen for their meeting place. DaVinci's eye's shifted to the side as he approached the Patriarch, his tail lashing back and forth as he stopped short of where the other was standing. "Hello my fearless leader.." he teased, his wisecracks not up to the norm but he couldn't help it, it just seemed to roll off his tongue the moment the gimp showed his face.

She was so hungry! Addison rolled over and over again in the grass, sending grasshoppers flying in every direction. She had tried eating the insects earlier in the day, to see if they would make a good meal, but they'd shot disgusting brown stuff out into her mouth when she had bitten down on them. Gross! She didn't want to eat something if it would put a bad taste in her mouth. She'd never tasted something so horrible. She was becoming more of a picky eater as she got older; by now Addison had tried many different kinds of meat and she was learning what she liked and what she didn't like.

A howl made her roll quickly back up onto her white feet, head turning in several different directions. Where was the howl coming from? She knew it was Jeff, from the sound of it and the authority that it commanded, but she couldn't tell where it was coming from. She began to run in the direction that she thought it had come from, searching. "Jeff?" Blue and green eyes looked all around until she saw it, spots of brown fur through the trees. Both Jefferson and Davinci were both there! But what for, she wondered. The four-month-old looked at them quizically. "Can I come?" He must have called them there for a reason! Maybe not a meeting, but something just as interesting.

Cocking his left ear into the air, a black head turned toward the east. It was a howl from a voice he'd heard a couple of times, so he recognised it, but he'd yet to actually meet his leader. Considering for a moment, his mismatched eyes blinked quickly. Very well, then. He'd go. It's probably a good idea to meet my alpha sooner, rather than later... vukasin thought to himself as his paws began to drum the ground as he headed for the origin of the call. Because it was a call. He could only assume as to the purpose of the universal summons until he arrived.

As he moved fluidly through the undergrowth, he felt his stomach burble as the acidic contents searched for something to work its magic on. He'd not eaten since the rabbit he'd caught the morning of the day before. After about ten minutes, he broke through the tree line into a clearign that already held Da'Vinci, the male who'd accepted him into the pack, a small female, and the much scarred and mutilated male that he assumed, from what he'd to date heard, to be his leader. He stood there for a moment, then hunted down a place to sit until something happened.

I might as well join =P

Green-hued eyes gazed off into space as a tan and cream hued she-wolf sprawled out in the ray of sunlight that filtered through the thick trees. She had her normal wolf appearance; her thick coat, in addition to the warmth of the sun, kept her quite comfortable. She was pleased that the snow had finally started disappearing; nasty stuff it was. Her eyelids drooped as she began to doze, right when her stomach growled. She gave a short sigh; she hadn't eaten since a couple days before and she figured she was due to go hunting again some-time soon. She was just about to push herself up off the warm brown earth when she heard a long, unwavering howl sound from somewhere to her left. "Jefferson," she muttered to herself, then added dryly, "What timing you have."

She leaped up and shook her coat, trying to rid it of any leaves or small twigs that would have gotten ensnared, momentarily mourning the loss of her nap in the sun. She vowed to return after Jefferson was finished whatever he wanted to finish as she started loping towards the source of the sound. It then occurred to her that she'd never really met Jefferson; since she'd joined Phoenix Valley she'd really only met a few of her packmates, which was rather unusual for Ms. Extrovert. She chose to keep to herself for a bit, just until she was a little bit familiarized with the territory. Her two white-tipped paws hit the ground in perfect timing with her other two paws until she slowed herself down to a graceful two-beat trot. She slowed to a walk as she entered the small clearing, her eyes glancing around to see who was present. DaVinci, she saw, her vision instantly picking out his steel gray fur. She smiled then as she saw her little friend, Addison, as well as a rather handsome black male and a gimp; that must be Jeff, she thought to herself.

She wandered a bit closer to the small crowd, sitting a couple feet away, flicking her golden-hued ears back as she sat in silence, waiting for Jefferson to announce what he wanted.

Honoré's terrible at hunting and he's getting old, I hope it's okay if he only sticks around as a spectator. I really wanted to join this.

Honoré hesitated a moment before leaving the cabin he’d claimed at his own, taking the time to check himself out in the mirror. He was still as handsome as ever, no doubt about it. Adjustments weren’t really needed, but he took the time to reposition his hat just in case. It had nothing to do with impressing the ladies, it was much more than that! His aim was to impress the whole wide world. He was a gorgeous creature and everyone had to acknowledge that; his flawless body was proof enough! No more than five minutes were spent in front of the mirror, which must’ve been a record. On average, a solid hour of grooming every day was needed to keep his pelt silky smooth. But today was an exception. Jefferson had called and he was a very important man.

So the Québécois set out in the Patriarch’s general direction, hoping his flair would not fail him this time. It was no secret that Honoré wasn’t much of a scout, but it seemed his natural instincts were getting worse with age. He’d circled the area once or twice before finding the small amount of wolves gathered, but he made no mention of it. Perhaps his weakness would go away if he kept ignoring it. Eyes of metallic bronze examined every single wolf there, mentally registering their faces in the back of his mind. He already knew three out of five; more than fifty percent. That was a good thing, wasn’t it? He offered an awkward grin to everyone, except the bird-eater. DaVinci did not deserve a smile! Honoré nodded snobbishly instead, keeping his eyes away from the other male’s.

Jefferson was planning on spectating as well--Honore can hang out with him. Tongue

The one-eyed leader was pleasantly surprised to see response to his calling, despite the fact that its tone had been directed to be optional or an invitation. Quite a few faces appeared, a couple of which he did not recognize but was delighted to finally be given an opportunity to meet. He was in particularly good spirits that day, despite some recent endeavors he did not think fond of in the least, but perhaps it really was the good weather. He hated winter, after all, and the first signs of spring always cheered up the foul beast. Unsurprisingly, his subleader was the first to appear, and even more unsurprisingly, greeted him with something sarcastic but characteristic of the silver-furred idiot. "Damn, you're here?" Jefferson smirked, pointing a precocious green eye at his friend. It had been some time since they talked; after his recent clash with Gabriel, the Patriarch was beginning to think it was about time they did.

Before he could mention it, however, more faces rapidly entered his view. He hesitated lightly at Addison's question, pouted some overprotective parent's judgmental scowl, and shrugged his shoulders. "Sure, Add. You just make sure you listen to what everyone tells you so you don't get hurt or in the way." He forced some sort of awkward smile, more to reassure himself than anyone else. Jefferson was pleased to see Vukasin appear, considering the boy had been a member for only a short while but was just as willing to appear and partake in activities. The following two members that appear went unrecognized, but like Vukasin, were offered a pleasant nod of greeting before the Patriarch finally spoke. "So there's a couple of you here I'm not sure I know," he said, passing a skeptical eye to DaVinci before continuing. "I'm Jefferson, if you don't already know. Now that the weather's been well, I was thinking it was about time for some... recreation. How about a hunt?" Why was he in such a good mood, anyway? Surely DaVinci and Addison would be on his back about it later.

He considered them all under a cautious eye a moment, then nodded his head in confidence of his decisions. "Since neither of our hunters are here, DaVinci will lead you bunch. Addison will be tagging along, too... She's still learning to hunt, so take care of her. I'll be standing by, but I'll jump in if you need me." He smirked, purposely forgetting to mention that he would have been a burden in trying to help, then turned his eye to his subleader. "Care to take over?"

Before the others arrived DaVinci's tease was greeted with one in turn as he chuckled and jerked his head towards the main packlands. "Yeah, I figured I had to protect the masses from the big bad wolf you know.." He grinned wickedly at his leader as he scratched at an itch along his ear, the identification tag that adored his ear jingling with the motion of his foot. Finishing up the act DaVinci shook out his pelt and sighed contently for once as he watched the others slowly begin to pour in.

He was surprised to realize that he knew each face that came trotting into the clearing. He smiled down at Addison as she questioned Jefferson on if she could join as well. DaVinci was polite enough to look the other way as Jefferson spoke sweetly to the small girl promising her that she could trail along. His eyes trailed over to the others as they joined grins and polite nods given, except to the snowy beige older male who seemed to give him a rather frigid greeting, though as DaVinci thought about it he probably did deserve it, he hadn't exactly been the most sociable creature as of lately. Lucky he hadn't done much to regret within the pack or with the packmates. He winced slight at that thought before turning towards Jefferson once all had seemingly gathered.

At the words of his leader DaVinci gave the fellow a rather skeptical look. He couldn't think of a time when the crippled male had ever been so chipper and upbeat. He was beginning to wonder just what had gotten into the male but he decided against saying another before the other members. He might be a wiseass when it came to Jefferson but that annoying affection was just between the two of them, not a normal count of public display. He pushed it all to the side and smiled at the idea of a hunt.

That idea was quickly dulled when it was announced that he would be in charge of it all, on top of that he was suppose to be watching out for the smallest packmember as well. DaVinci just nodded to Jefferson as he tried to think just what there was out in the territory as of lately to hunt. With the coming of spring the deer, caribou, elk and moose had all been out aplenty. He couldn't think of where he'd scented deer in the lands lately, the herds having moved into the deep woods for their rutting games, but he did know where there was a small gathering of elk. Smiling to himself he began to form the plan in his head, perfect timing too for it seemed that Jefferson had turned the floor over to him.

Stepping forward DaVinci nodded to the gathering before he spoke up. "Alright. There's been a small herd of elk up in the high fields beyond the ranch. The cows are suckling young calves and we won't be hunting them, lucky a few bulls have been trailing after the herd and we should be able to draw one away from the others." He glanced around at the packmembers that had come for the call. "Are there any questions before we get started?" he asked.

"Asariel, Vukasin, I want each of you to take one wing or the other. Keep the bull away from the herd and out in the open where it will be easier to take him down. I'll take Addison and we'll bring him out into the trap." He turned to Honore and stated. "You can take one side or the other if you wish, or keep an eye out from a distance to see if we're weaker at one point or another. Join whichever flank seems to fall behind." he doubted that the two hunters would let the elk through, but it was a good idea to have someone as backup incase something did go wrong.

He glanced to Jefferson before nodding. "Alright then? Let's go." he said as he lead the group to the close field where the elk had recently set to resting.

Jefferson scowled at her and her smile grew wider, tail wagging in a big blur behind her. She tried to get her way with him often, and sometimes it worked...but sometimes it didn't. She didn't know exactly what they were all here for, but she wanted to be involved in whatever the pack was doing. She had met some of the packmembers, but not all of them yet and she wanted to be more social. She had to know everybody! She nodded enthusiastically when she was given permission to accompany the group.

Not really sure what she had signed herself up for, the girl watched as others arrived. There was another wolf that she recognized and she went toward the older female, tail still waving back and forth in a friendly manner. "Asariel!! Hi!! How have you been?" As soon as she heard Jeff start talking, though, she turned back toward him. So they were going to go on a hunt? She had only ever hunted with Jeff or by herself, occasionally catching a bird or small other small creature. She listened to Davinci next, thinking about his words in her head...the plan to catch the bull. She nodded that she was ready, preparing to set off with the subleader.

Nodding, Vuk stood to follow the others. "'Kay. Flank. Care if I take left?" he directed the inquiry at Asariel, whom he did not know, but was sure to whom he would become aquainted. Watching the others through his mismatched eyes, he let his tail shift slightly as he stretched his left leg behind him, breaking step for a moment. The length difference wasn't noticable most of the time, but when running, he definitely had a tendency to veer right, hence, his request of the left wing of the pincer formation.

As he padded along, watching the herd, he scented the air. Mmm. Clean, crisp. The fresh grasses smelled nice, and he could smell the soil, still only just beginning to give it's goodness up to the plants growing in it. and, of course, the returning prey. He loved spring. It meant that soon it would be warm enough to swim again. He couldn't wait.

Teal eyes watched DaVinci and Jefferson with mild interest. It was interesting to her how pack leaders managed things; though DaVi and Jeff both seemed to have that "sarcastic" relationship. A small voice quipped to her right; must be Addie. Asariel smiled warmly at the pup, she'd always had a soft spot for youngsters. "Hello, Addison." That was all she'd managed to say before Jefferson started talking. Well, true enough, she didn't really know him either though the situation was a bit different seeing as she at least knew who she was. Asariel made a mental note to introduce herself later, after the pack hunt.

She smiled in satisfaction as DaVinci sent her to one of the flanks - something she was a bit skilled in. She smiled warmly at Vukasin as he approached her, requesting he take the left. "Of course, Vukasin. I'm better at right, anyway." Another mental note: formally introduce yourself to him, too. She flicked her ears back to listen to DaVi momentarily, then she frowned. The bulls would be harder to take down than a cow or a youngster, unless he was an elder. However she kept quiet, there was no need to argue with her pack's subleader. She stood and shook her cream and tan hued pelt off, trailing after the hunting posse as it started towards the hunting grounds. Asariel decided to stay close to her flank buddy - no sense in getting separated from him, either. Not that she was complaining in the least...

The Québécois only realized what he’d gotten himself into when the Patriarch said something about a hunt. What? Oh, no no! Honoré took a cautious step back when DaVinci started giving out orders and explanations. Both of his ears were laid flat against his head, half-expecting the second in command to seek revenge by assigning him a demanding position. The five-year-old male most certainly had not signed up for this! Had he known, he would’ve stayed home with his feathered friends. But it was too late to walk away now.

He followed the conversation closely, rapidly establishing that Asariel and Vukasin were each getting a side. That left him with what? The ass? Honoré didn’t like that idea. Multiple scenarios were being played in the back of his mind, and none of them were tempting. It became apparent that he’d overreacted when DaVinci gave him two options. He chose the one that required him to stay away from the elk, hoping that Asariel and Vukasin wouldn’t need his assistance. “Okay, s’cool. I pro at watching.”

Jefferson watched contentedly as his subleader took charge, directing members this way and that on a moment's notice as if he did it for a living. Those that had gathered, of course, generally made no argument and the Patriarch was pleased to see they were so eager and willing to go, speaking with one another amicably. There was a level of community within them that Jefferson had not been aware of; those of his pack, in general, were of kinder natures, more laid back than most while open to newer things. Jefferson was pleased with them, and that was that.

Addison seemed to attach herself to the girl addressed as Asariel rather quickly; the wolf seemed pleasant enough, and thus Jefferson decided the pup could be trusted under supervision, along with DaVinci. Surely the silver-furred idiot, even in his babbling nonsense, would know naturally that he was in charge of Addison's safety--though as a parent, Jefferson would be watching from afar and would be the first to leap into action should the pup be in danger. ...Or if something else went wrong, he supposed, but he didn't much care for that. However, the Patriarch's green eye turned when the white-furred Honore backed off quickly; the Frenchman was of an age near to his own, and honestly the Patriarch hadn't expected much out of him. Of course, Jefferson himself was plenty of proof that they weren't old yet--not even close, really--and that he was hardly out of spark and flame yet. "All right then, get moving," the cyclops said, flashing a rare smile that seemed to derive out of real pride and pleasure rather than the typical forced simper. "I'll be watching if you need me. Addison, behave and listen to whatever DaVinci says." He cocked a particular, expecting look on the pup and nodded his head patiently, encouraging them to be on their way.

DaVinci smiled as the wolves seemed to begin to get themselves situated and ready for the hunt. He nodded to Jefferson as he told them to get a move on it. "Aye Captain!" he called as he gestured to the others with a jerk of his head to follow him as he began to make his way slowly towards the back field where the elk had been making themselves at home. He smiled to himself as already he could hear the bellowing of the bulls. He glanced over to Addison to make certain she was keeping up before he quickened his pace to bring the others to the edge of a small gathering of trees that half circled the meadow where the herd was grazing. He waited for the others to catch up as he smiled.

He tilted his head towards a younger male who had been injured in a tussle with one of the other bulls over the harlem of females that were laying about in the grass, "That will be our prize today.."His eyes glanced over to those with young tending to the youth as the bulls that had come out ahead in their rutting had begun to call to the females. Mating season sure was a loud and annoying time. He shook his head at the scene before them, hoping he wasn't going to have to stop and explain to Addison just what was going on.

"Ready? You two draw the male this way.." He gestured for Vukasin and Asariel to begin to make their way around to either side of the herd as he moved out into the deep meadow grasses to wait for the two to chase the bull his way. Addison should be fine as long as she didn't get under his feet. This wasn't the first time he'd lead a hunt and it wasn't going to be his last, atleast he hoped it would. He knew if anything happened to Addison Jefferson would probably kill him anyways. He glanced back towards Honore and the Patriarch as he crouched down in the grasses to wait. "Keep down low Addison, we don't want him to catch sight of us until it's too late.."

.......out of character

Addi smiled at Asariel as they took off after the subleader. She didn't understand why Jefferson was staying behind, and wanted him to come, but now wasn't the time to ask him about that. He'd helped her hunt before...couldn't he come with them?

She pumped her legs hard, taking two paces for each one of the larger member's. She could keep up, just barely, and was breathing heavily by the time they stopped. She tried to quiet it down, taking big gulps of air to calm her heart and lungs down, then concentrated on what Davinci was telling her to do. She crouched low to the ground, keeping her ears back so they wouldn't stick up and give them away either. She watched the two that the subleader had picked out, observing their movements. It didn't look like they had been spotted yet...good.

Nodding, the black-furred malle melted away into the trees. His eyes continuously shifted from his path to his prey, and he began to saivate at the thought of biting into the thing's neck or ripping into it's stomach. He'd not eaten anything bigger than a turkey in months, since he'd been alone before joinging the pack. His ears swivveled as each new sound entered, though some he could not identify, for the majority of his focus was on the herd. His snout twitched intently as he followed the scent of the injured male that DaVinci had marked off as their quarry, and grinned eagerly as he noted that the wind was still blowing against them, taking their scents away from the elk.

Watching carefully to be sure that no twig or branch would snap and betray his position, he watched the male meader a short distance to the right, searching for juicier grass. Vuk's tail waved like a banner behind him as he waited impatciently for some indication that the others had reached their designated stations. Stretching his hind legs one at a time to loosen up his slightly stiff knees, he grimaced as he felt one of his muscles shift wrong. Fortunately, it was the kind of thing that wouldn't hurt until the next day. He kept his eyes peeled for a signal.

Asariel trotted neatly beside her hunting partner, her current team-mate for this hunt. She watched him disintegrate into the trees on his side; with a quick glance at the sickly bull that they were to kill, she melted away into her own position. The gentle breeze carried the herbivore's scent towards her and she began to salivate. True enough, Asariel wasn't a master hunter or something spectacular, but she knew a little bit. Herding off the injured male should be easy enough. The chase would be short, they would bring him down while the others fled.

Another thing on their side, the bull's stamina wouldn't be all that great. Her teal colored eyes watched it as the male limped heavily for a few steps then began to graze once more. From her position, concealed by the forest trees, she awaited some form of signal that the others were at their posts and ready.

Hazel-colored eyes followed the action ahead, evaluating their every movement; especially the way they stalked the target at hand. They made it seem so effortless and… enthralling. Hunting was an art. One that Honoré was terrible at. Stealth and wits had never been his forte and that wasn’t about to change. It made him wonder what he was actually good at. Writing poetry and painting bird houses was none too flattering. Wasn’t there anything he could do to aid Phoenix Valley? The Québécois cast a sideway glance at his leader, noticeably uncomfortable with the whole situation. Perhaps Jefferson was disappointed now that he could see how useless Honoré truly was.

He wanted to say something, anything to break the silence. Just keeping quiet and minding his own business had briefly crossed his mind, but he didn’t have it in him to do so. A hand was brought up to pointlessly scratch the back of his head; he wasn’t even itchy, but it gave him something to do. The hunt hadn’t yet reached a point where paying attention was necessary, so his gaze swept aimlessly across the pack lands. He looked a little lost, dazed almost. “I like ketchup,” he said suddenly, not stopping to realize that now wasn’t the time for small-talk. “Its good on meat. Ill go get later. Good idea Honoré.” he continued, congratulating himself. The Québécois didn’t even turn to meet the Patriarch’s gaze as he voiced his suggestion. It wasn’t meant for anyone in particular.

A careful eye overlooked their progress, the beast stepping at a leisurely pace to follow their actions and movements from afar. There wasn't the slightest possibility that Addison would leave his gaze, but the brute had done his share of rescuing on children and adults alike. Should one of his other members, even those strong-standing and capable, fall into some sort of danger, Jefferson would spring into action at a moment's notice. For now, though, DaVinci led them smoothly, and the cyclops could lumber along behind them pleasantly and unhurried.

He paid little attention to Honoré as his gaze and attention was focused on the busied group in the distance, though the cyclops turned his eye to the white-furred male when he spoke. It seemed the frenchman was speaking to himself, muttering something completely abstract and generally unexpected from the cool-minded Patriarch. There was a long pause that he spent staring before the brute addressed him. "So... Honoré, is it?" The two had never been formally introduced somehow, but the Patriarch was typically a busy man. "Not one for hunting, are you?" The white male didn't exactly put the cyclops on edge, but he had a strange way about him. It was almost intriguing, had the francophone been younger. He was a bit quirky, perhaps, but then again, so was the Jefferson. His green-eyed gaze recovered the distraction well; his eye flicked back to the action, searching for Addison only briefly before settling on her little form and relaxing.

DaVinci had taken to ignoring the other members of the pack as they settling into their places. He knew that they would find their places as he found his own. He waited for them to finally arrange themselves before he gave the signal that the hunt was about to begin. Turning his eyes towards Addison he grinned and asked, "You ready?" right before he readied himself to take off across the land. He knew that the young girl would follow after him and his paws ate up the ground quickly as he went flashing down upon the herd.

He could hear the paws of the rest of the pack as they began to thunder and position the wounded male into the path that they wanted him to take. DaVinci quickly overtook the others as he snapped at the beast, his fangs nipping at it's flank and heels, leaving bloody trails along it's body as he could hear it's labored breath as it began to falter worse than before. Taking the moment to take one powerful leap and land himself on the beast's back DaVinci sank his fangs into the creature's neck, feeling the male trying to buck and throw him off his body.

He closed his eyes as he tried to hold on tight but though the wound had nicked an artery the male got a good swing in and managed to dislodge DaVinci, tossing him to the side where he rolled and came to a crashing stop in a patch of brambles. Wincing to himself the male began to try and pick himself up as he watched the rest of the pack begin their descent on the doomed beast.
