Now he's dead

Alexey, 300+

The boy stumbled blindly through the light vegetation. Tears made the terrain bulge and transform into nasty figures and shapes, but the boy was already scared out of his mind. His bum still burned from the kick, and his face throbbed painfully after the kick had sent the boy flying into the wall. His tears flooded with both pain and fear, and his muzzle was red with nosebleed from the impact with the wall. He did not know exactly where he was going, but his destination was the lovely Caregiver’s cabin. He had not been there often, but he had always thought he would be able to find it. Now the boy was not sure, but he did not dare to slow down in fear of having his father trail him. Hell, the boy did not even dare to turn around to check. Lilac eyes were glued forward, although oblivious to what he saw. Sobs forced themselves out between hurried breaths and left him empty for the air he so sorely needed to be able to keep up the speed.

Finally he crashed into the ground and did not get up. All he could do was to hiccup pathetically and cry. He was closer to Alexey’s cabin than he realized, but there was too much chaos for there to be room for clear thought. He could only sniffle and press his forehead against the cool grass. This was all he could ever do. Make people angry or sad and cry. Daddy hated him, and Alexey had been so angry with him not long ago. Maybe she too would disappear just like mommy had. He always felt like dying, maybe that would be best so that he would not be so much trouble anymore. It was all just too bad, that life could not improve. It just revealed that Conor was the mean and bad one here.

Morning arrived in a thick blanket of humidity. The Caregiver was already out and about, just enjoying nature’s serenity. She was growing accustomed to the solitude that came with Dreyrugr’s departure; as time went by, he became a distant memory. Her heart was slowly recovering, but it felt as though the scars would be permanent. A vague feeling of humiliation was also present; falling in love with a womanizer hadn’t been very wise. Although she’d partly expected his betrayal, Kol’s disappearance was beyond comprehension. Had she run off with Elliott? A plausible explanation, considering the fact that he’d also gone missing.

The Caregiver was fairly caught up in her train of thoughts when movement amongst a tall patch of grass momentarily caught her attention; a hare, perhaps? She would’ve simply ignored it, had it not been for the familiar whimpers and hiccups coming from the same area. Alexey knew who they belonged to even from a distance. Although Conor wasn’t the toughest child in the world, he rarely complained without reason. “Coco?” she called out worriedly, moving over to his location. The Acer saw the top of his head first and as she bent down to soothe him, her amber-colored eyes caught sight of the blood.

Panic struck her, and Alexey immediately lifted his chin upwards. Her hands roamed about his face, searching for signs of injury. It was then that she pieced things together and understood that the bleeding came from his nose. “Did he do this to you?” she asked, anticipating the dreadful confirmation. The man was insane! He clearly did not care for any of his children, and she wouldn’t allow him to destroy his boys like he’d destroyed his eldest daughter.

It was all a blur what happened next. The Caretaker appeared and he let her do whatever she wanted to with him, and despite the chaos, he enjoyed the anxiety the woman openly showed, which meant that she cared about him. Conor Soul really needed someone to care, he needed a parent that would be there for him. Alexey had been more of a parent than any of his biological parents had ever been, and so it was only natural that he had finally fled to her. His dad had terrorized days and nights for a while. It was not very often that the chocolate Lilium was directly violent, but when it happened, it clung to memory and created new and strengthened fear. Now the boy was out of his mind because of fear, and the limit had finally been reached. He sobbed pathetically as the woman investigated his face, not truly realizing that his muzzle was bloodstained because of his running nose. It was his bum that was the worst, although the mark was almost unnoticeable.

He felt his body shiver, although it was not a particularly chilly day. The boy did not know what to reply, because he knew that if he revealed what had happened, daddy would definitely be back for more, much more. ”Dad scared me –“ the boy managed to press out before a giant sob took all his air. He gasped and pressed his body against the Caretaker, unable to stop his hiccupping enough to continue on with the sentence.

It felt like the world came crashing down on her shoulders. Alexey’s head throbbed as she tried to make sense of it all. Her protégé’s explanation was cut short; the Lilium had scared him and then what? Deep down she knew it was a lie, but she also understood why Conor avoided pinning the blame on his father. Haku controlled both of his sons like puppets on strings, just like he did with everybody else. She too, feared him to a certain extent. The Acer could only imagine what he’d done to the little boy; it had gotten physical, obviously. Conor certainly hadn’t given himself a nosebleed! “It’s okay, honey.” she murmured, wrapping both of her arms around his shivering body.

Both of the pup’s parents were incapable morons. Haku wanted nothing to do with them, and Firefly was too much of a ditz to insure their safety. They had become a hazard to their son’s mental health. “You’re not going back there,” she assured him, nuzzling the top of his head affectionately. Her voice was calm and collected, nothing like the raging storm inside of her. It became painfully obvious that she had no control over the Lilium, and it nearly drove her over the edge. She’d worked so hard to mend Conor’s broken heart and every time he actually made some progress, his own father would take it upon himself to traumatize him even more. Was this a game to him? “Stop crying Conor, please,” she pleaded, feeling her heart shatter with every sob escaping his tiny maw.

Conor did pin the majority of the blame on his father, but he was weak, and somehow he had to deserve it, as it was clear that it was Conor that got most of the beating in the house. The woman’s arms embraced him with their warmth, and he snivelled loudly, blood and snot everywhere it seemed. He pressed himself against her, determined to become a part of her and never get separated again. He did not want to go back. Never, never. Mommy had left, Daddy was horrible, and Lexey did not want to live with Conor in the Lilium’s house. Therefore, Conor was determined to live in her house, no matter how slim his chances were. He felt like wetting himself just by thinking the words; going back. He huffed, whining into her soft fur, wondering why he could not be her song.

The next words flushed over him, mimicking the feeling of getting down into a hot bath, pleasure filling every cell of his being. If this was something that was merely said to comfort him in the presence was something he could not afford to ponder about, as it would hurt to much to imagine such a possibility. His blurry eyes tried to find hers, begging to see pure truth in her eyes. Her nuzzle was most welcome, and the boy continued his snivelling and whimpering, not wanting it to stop, ever. ”Don’t take me back to daddy, don’t!” the child begged, the last word nothing less than a scream as the words alone upset him further. Her next words surprised him. Did he hurt her? Again he tried to gaze at her, but this time trying to focus a bit more on her and less on himself.

He pressed his thin lips together and tried to instantly kill every sound, but he could not fully suppress the sobs instantly. He wanted to stop crying for her, but it was no on and off switch. His eyes still bled tears, but else from that he stayed quiet, hiccups shaking his body whenever they arrived.

Her golden-hued pelt absorbed what seemed to be like an endless flow of salty tears as one of her hands affectionately rubbed his back, in an attempt to make him feel worthy of one’s love and affection. Conor, even at such a young age, had dealt with pain and suffering like no other. It was hard for her to relate, as both of her parents had been perfect in every way; they had loved each other and their children unconditionally. It was both unconceivable and outrageous to see the Lilium treat his sons like dirt, and she couldn’t help but wonder if they would fully recover from the emotional abuse.

She would do everything in her power to help her protégé recover smoothly, if such a thing was possible. Her thoughts wandered to the Lilium as she cradled his son close to her chest. She didn’t know how he’d react upon finding out that his primary punching bag had moved in with the pack’s caregiver. Would Emwe become his new target? Alexey exhaled shakily at that thought, not wanting the sub-leader to torment another innocent soul for shits and giggles. Her beige-colored ears fluttered at the sound of her protégé’s heartrending plea.

“I’m not Coco. You can stay with me,” she reassured him, a forced smile spreading upon her maw. She didn’t care what the Lilium thought of the idea because that’s how things were going to be, regardless of his opinion. Delicate fingers wiped away the remainder of tears flowing down his cheeks, dabbing away the evidence. “You can’t keep crying like that-” she explained, her voice filled with warmth. “because I need a strong man to protect me.” A suggestive wink was paired with her remark, implying that he could take Drey’s place and become the “man of the house” if he wanted to.

Her touch was so soft. It almost made him believe things could actually be alright again. She always promoted that feeling, and her confirming words that he was not going back to that horrible, horrible man made his heart flutter with something good rather than bad. Flooding eyes rose to look at the woman’s delicate face. The face he loved with all the power a heart could love. She was her mother and father and friend. It seemed his world chose girls to be his saviours. Catalyst with her pretty doll face. Cercelee with her cold yet warm eyes. Alexey with her loving heart and caring soul. They were all individuals the boy already loved. He wanted Alexey Koios to be his mommy. He wanted as badly as anything he’d ever wanted. It hurt. Everything hurt. His nose was full of the stench of his own fear, clogged by snot and tears and blood. He imagined he was a disgusting sight.

The woman’s gentle fingers brushed his wet cheeks, and he found it easier to calm down when she touched him. If she did not want him to cry then he would do his best not to. It was a promise. An audible inhale was heard when the female’s last words sounded. A light blush brushed his face gently, and the boy had to look away, but could not hide the blooming smile that immediately started to stretch across his cream and copper face. He could be both strong and be a man at the same time! He could, he knew he could! Conor’s tail immediately started to wag, but the pain in his bum (which had almost been forgotten in all this) shot up a few additional levels because of the movement. ”Oww, my bum hurts.” the boy complained before he could realize what exactly it was he had said.

Her feelings for the boy were far greater than friendship; what she felt was different. It was unconditional, beyond what was expected of her; the kind of affection a mother would have for her child. She’d known from the moment she’d laid eyes on his dying body, what he truly meant to her. Conor Soul gave her life meaning; they weren’t related through blood but that didn't stop her from considering him her own. The Acer wanted nothing more than to let him know that and yet, she couldn’t find the right words to do so. It was probably for the best. If such information ever reached the Lilium’s ears, there was a good chance they’d get separated.

Conor wasn’t one to ask many questions. His silence often kept her guessing, wondering just what he was thinking. Honey-hued orbs did not leave his form, out of fear that he would vanish right before her eyes. The way his face finally lit up made her heart skip a beat; a furtive smile appeared amidst the tears. She couldn’t remember the last time he’d smiled so genuinely; he was beautiful. It was interrupted when he started to wag his tail, and Lexey could only frown at the words that escaped his mouth. What she heard sent another wave of anger crashing over her. “Your bum? Did he kick you?” It suddenly dawned on her, what the Lilium had done and how Conor had gotten his nose bleed.

A cautious glance was cast towards Haku’s cabin and the Acer wondered if he’d come chasing after his runaway child. “Let’s go inside” she suggested hastily, as she ushered him to the two-story house she’d once shared with Kol. Once inside, she wasted no time locking the front door behind them. She doubted the chocolate leader cared enough to come looking for Conor, but she didn’t want to risk it. “Do you want me to show you around?” she said suddenly, in an attempt to lighten the mood.

He leaned against her warm body, drawing strength and courage from that, enough to keep standing and banishing any tears that wanted to overthrow his temporary control. They were both too good for their lives. Hurt and betrayal had been given in exchange for kindness and love. She was the one stable pillar in Conor’s life; standing strong and tall. His mother in every way but in the flesh. This did not at all hinder his love for the woman that had saved his life. The world was changing its colours along with the dawning of a new future without an abusive father present. He did not thank her in words, but he was beyond words for now. He just wanted to be close to her and feel her. She would not let Daddy Haku hurt him anymore. The lilac eyes looked up at Alexey’s beautiful face, and he was almost certain he could see the faint outlines of a pair of wings behind her. His tail continued to wag despite the ache, only for her.

The woman’s question sounded alarming in his ears. ”No!” he yelped out, his face vanishing into her thick fur. The puppy hoped that the woman would let it be. Instead he mewled and poked his silky muzzle against her skin, trying to somehow pretend to be a cute puppy. People liked cute puppies, and he wanted to be cute for her and make her forget about his foolish words. He sniffled slightly, inhaling the thick scent of blood located there. It made him slightly sick. She ushered him towards her cabin, and the boy willingly stumbled towards the building that he had wanted to call home for so long. He bounced into the cool building and was already halfway on his way up the stairs when she asked if he wanted to be shown around. ”I want a room with bed!” the boy called out as he continued running upstairs, wondering how it would be like to sleep in one.

Annd fade to black!

She’d never seen him so happy before. There was a renewed innocence growing within the child she so desperately wanted to call her own. The transition was beautiful to watch; Conor had been emotionally scarred and broken for the first few months of his life. With hope came a new era. Things were different now. He would grow up in a normal loving household, as opposed to the hell hole he’d called home up until now. His smile warmed her heart like rays of sunlight on a hot summer day. Everything was going to be okay; they had each other.

The Acer tried her best not to let negativity ruin such a precious moment, but reality was cruel. There was a possibility that Haku would not appreciate what she’d done. He was a twisted man with a blackened heart. He had no love for his sons, and he certainly wouldn’t hesitate to crush their hopes and dreams. Especially if Conor went as far as telling others what his father had done. The pup wouldn’t willingly do so, but a slip of the tongue was entirely too plausible. Alexey pushed the “what if” scenarios aside, choosing to focus on the present moment.

Honey-hued eyes trailed after the eager child as he bounced up the stairs, his little tail wagging back and forth at the prospect of having his own room… with a bed! Lexey couldn’t help but smile at his demand. Had he ever slept in one? She couldn’t recall him having his own in the Lilium’s cabin. “Okay, bed is all yours.” she acquiesced, climbing up the flight of stairs.
