in a field of mud and bone

The days were turning out painfully repetitive and Emma was having a hard time adjusting and opening up to the place she was supposed to call home. Only in the last few days did she relax and play with her sister, temporarily forgetting about the turmoil the sisters were going through. It was a simple sort of play, a mixture of tag and hide and seek and all was well until Godelieve fell and cried for their parents, neither of which came to their aid. No one had come, after all, and Emma realized just how alone they were in this pack, how unwanted they had been and it only fueled her determination to find her parents again.
Since then, their playing had ceased and Emma moved as far as her legs would carry her through the packlands and each day she ran into the obvious border that smelled heavily of urine that mixed between the two leaders of the pack, both unmistakable even if she had not met one of them. Today, Emma had gotten to the borders fairly early and the sun was still bright but she could see the dark overhang of clouds that shown there would be a storm coming up on the evening. The weather was cool and the wind chilled her to the bone but she stood strong as she peered across the land she had not visited and did not find the courage to actually cross over the borders that led to the outside world she was used to. Before, she had a guardian and the young werewolf missed her, even if she dumped the girls off here.

Emma held her breath as she picked up her oversized paws and moved backward at first, cowering at the idea of running into the unknown, and slipped into a bit of foliage that hid her from eyesight, however her scent was strong and now coated with the pack scent and Hemming. The protection gave her a shield against the public eye and a chance for her to try and think, her brain undeveloped on solving such large problems that she could not come up with anything other than simple child logic of if she ran, she would find her parents without the need of tracking or adult supervision. Slowly, Emma emerged from beneath the foliage and remained only half hidden as her eyes scanned the landscape and waited for the magical answers that had yet come to her.

Between thoughts of Ember's upset face and the haunting image of his old and broken husky friend, Dawali attempted to squeeze in more positive thoughts. Nothing so far had worked, however, and he had instead taken to wandering along the pack border, keeping away from the village center. He did not really want to speak to Ember —or did he? The awkwardness that had settled between them refused to be shaken loose, and the only remedy seemed to be to occupy his hands and his body. Maybe one of these days he would try and repair the human structure (it was just a fence, really. There was nothing special about it) that ran through the working fields. Maybe not. For now, his feet carried him around and around the borders, simply to look at the scenery and to have something to do.

As he stared absent-mindedly in front of him, his nose revealed that another presence was near, one he did not know. Or, he did know it —he knew the scent, but he was not familiar with her on a personal level. It had to have been Ember who had taken them in, the two small pups, and although Dawali had felt as if he should see to that they were comfortable, he had not found the time. Perhaps he was growing selfish, but his life troubled him. Where there had been simple logic and enjoyable friendships before, were now complicated social intrigues and relationships which were not easy to define. Was he friends with Ember? With Leland? He had no idea. But he should have met up with the two children before now; in that sense he had failed them. Luckily, one of them was not far from where he was heading, or so her scent told him, and perhaps he could make up for his mistake. Following the scent's direction, it grew stronger for a while; and there she was. He could not read her intent. His voice was calm as he spoke, and he stopped at a distance. Not all children were Noir: some of them were shy, which was probably for the better. "Hi there.. I'm Dawali, what's your name?" His eyes were kind and his hands moved slowly as he spoke; a habit.

Emma had not intended to have company and when someone approached, she shuffled back further into the bush to avoid being seen but it was evident she failed. Her blue eyes stared through the brush quietly as he introduced himself and asked for her own name. Her ears rested against her head and she pushed up a branch and stuck her head out. At first, she did not speak, but instead stared at his head garment. She became momentarily distracted by the feathers but she finally snapped out of it with a thump of her tail to acknowledge him. "H-hi," she whimpered as she shuffled out of the bush. She felt intimidated and worried she might have done something wrong but she hadn't heard of this male before from Hemming or Ember.

"My na-name is Emma," she stuttered and let the cold ground chill her belly. Her eyes turned away and she stared at the ground. "I wuz no-not doin' nothin'," she explained and slowly picked herself up. She felt so little to wolves in their natural form and even smaller when they stood on two legs. She felt like an ant. She slowly stepped back and let the bush touch her shoulder as if it were a security blanket. Emma could dash back inside, beneath the bush's cover, if something were going to go wrong.

Dawali fought an amused smile as he studied the girl in the bush, so intent on not being seen and so wonderfully failing at it. She seemed shy, and quite nervous, stumbling out of the bush with a weak greeting. She seemed to take more than usual comfort in the opportunity to hide, and for a moment he wondered if she was just the easily nervous kind, or whether something had happened to her to make her so afraid. No matter the solution to that mystery, the Kalona decided that it just would not do to scare the little ones, and like he had had with the Aston children, he wanted a good relationship with this one. If he was to gain their respect as adults, he better start now. Sitting down with his legs crossed and knees pointing out to either side of him, he smiled and replied casually, trying to ease her mind. She claimed to have been doing 'nothin'', and he would not push it. "Hi there Emma." He smiled, and now he rested his elbows on his knees and relaxed his upper body. "You came here just recently, huh? Did Ember greet you?"
